Other parts of her comments don't exactly build confidence. She said the government doesn't "need to tell you what you can and can’t do. They don’t need to be a part of your life. They need to make sure that you have freedom. We need to have capitalism. We need to have economic freedom." Hey you know who else liked capitalism and economic freedom? Slave owners. Because the point of owning slaves wasn't to be cruel to other human beings. It was about cheap labor in order to increase profits. Same thing for child labor. Both of these atrocities are a direct and logical consequence of the unfettered capitalism that conservatives so cherish.

Her remarks are muddled non-sequiturs designed either to a) avoid making any racist remarks herself or b) avoid alienating any racists among her supporters Not sure which of the two it is. But her remarks are pointedly NOT racist. And clearly, her strategy backfired. If she had just said, "The civil war was fought over slavery" no one would have accused her of being racist. No, a better response would have been "The civil war was the result of Tariffs of manufactured goods put on the south that led to succession." While the abolitionist sentiment was growing in the North, it was the souths SUCCESSION that was the catalyst of the civil war. Then I would've followed up with the question to the person asking: If slavery ended in 1863 with the Emancipation Proclamation by Lincoln, what is the relevance of this question in 2023?

Slavery was 100% the main factor which caused the Civil War, but there were numerous other grievances which added fuel to the fire.
