The two most common names mentioned at the top of this year’s draft, Zaccharie Risacher and Alex Sarr, both have a compelling case to go #1. Sarr with his athleticism, size, and general skill for a big, and Risacher’s shooting touch and well rounded game. Neither are perfect prospects though, leaving the window open for a different prospect to surprise and go #1 if they look good enough in the pre draft process. Nikola Topic could be that player. A 6’6 point guard from Serbia, Topic has gone under the radar at the very top end of draft prospects for the 2024 draft, but in my eyes, he’s shown enough to be taken into consideration. But how good is he really? Would it actually be reasonable to take him #1 over Sarr or Risacher? Does he have that level of upside? Or does he best fit in as a mid lottery selection alongside Reed Sheppard, Donovan Clingan, and Ron Holland? What about his injury concerns? Today, we are going to break down that, along with the pros, the cons, and the general outlook for Topic’s game to see if he truly would be worth a selection near the top of the 2024 nba draft

I think it's important to remember that there's a lot of guys who became stars who had significant perceived flaws in their game when they were drafted, but I can't remember any recent star who didn't have at least one thing they were amazing at coming into the league. Even guys who nobody saw coming usually were way ahead of the curve at one thing, before they honed it into an unstoppable weapon. Giannis always ran the floor well and handled the ball well for his size. Jokic was always an amazing passer for his size, Steph was always a great shooter, Kawhi was always a great defender, etc. In a draft without any slam-dunk prospects, it's better to look for "best X in the draft" and see if he can figure out the rest, as opposed to trying too hard to get a "safe" all-around prospect, because those guys generally range from being decent players to being good at nothing, but rarely become standouts.

The reason his shot looks like that is cause he’s a set shooter in all these highlights you rarely see him shoot off the dribble if he does you see a pick or the defender is steps away his shooting is like klay drives like Parker no speed nothing but pure born talent

I love this guy’s game, all star potential. Blazer fans would hate it but he would be the best pick at 7 if he falls that far. At 6’ 6” his positional fit is pretty fluid.

I def saw the Shai comparison when it comes to size, how he drives and how he finishes under the rim. He's my #1 prospect I think there's a good chance he can become a top 10 PG within a few years
@hoophierarchy
@hoophierarchy Месяц назад
I just find it a bit of a stretch to compare him to Shai at this point. He’s got some of those traits, especially as a finisher, but Shai is much further along as a scorer overall at all 3 levels. I do agree with you on his talent though, I think he’s got a great chance to be one of the better PGs in the league a few years down the line

How will he score being as slow and unathletic as he is? His vision seems decent but it looks like he drives and kicks more than runs an offense. I have yet to see him make a pass that makes me say, wow. I'm a wizards fan so they may draft him but I don't see him being able to do a thing in the NBA. He seems slow doesn't have a good handle and has no athleticism. As far as upside I see almost none especially since he's already injury prone and probably has to some degree compromised knees.
@michaelahurt
@michaelahurt Месяц назад
@@michaelkoelsch146 The same way guys like Luka and Jalen Brunson and Trae Young score. In some ways being able to play off schedule helps you a ton in the NBA. Having a handle is less about sexy crossovers than getting where you want to go. If you can get to the rim as much as he does against pros it means you have a great handle. Athleticism is just a means to an end. The easiest way to create an advantage is to just be Anthony Edwards and be able to run faster and jump higher move quicker but it's not the only way.
@michaelkoelsch146
@michaelkoelsch146 Месяц назад
@@michaelahurt I hope so. I just don't see a special player in him. He looks decent at finishing around the rim. I'm hoping he can play with pace to create in the NBA. IDK who I would compare him to. I don't see any plays that make me go wow with his passing, but Stockton never wowed either. This draft class is pretty bad. The big upside I see for any bad team taking a pg is that the 2 best players next year are not.. ace and Cooper.

I’ve also considered the TP comparison but I think he’s arguably more similar to Josh Giddey in terms of being a larger passing oriented guard. Topic seems like a more developed playmaker off the dribble than Giddey who is great at making amazing reads standing still but struggles to create the openings himself. I can’t imagine Topic has that incredible SLOB passing ability Giddey has.

How do you feel of of fit in Houston with Amen?
@st012m
@st012m Месяц назад
A bit problematic offensively for spacing with Amen's complete lack of shooting, Jalen's inconsistent shooting, and Sengun's slow progress in shooting (long-term he may be okay), and keeping all of them on the floor at the same time. It would be fun to see the passing between Amen, Sengun, and Topic though.

I’m not mad at his shot but I am concerned about his health and defense. As a lottery pick, with a knee injury jury that kept him out 4 months and a re-injury to the same knee. Reports trying to smooth it over so he can be a lottery pick. 2nd round pick here.

Yeah, a bit. Still find him incredibly talented but knee injuries are always concerning, especially at his age. Probably wouldn’t take him over Sheppard at this point, even if I think in a vacuum he’s more talented overall
@celmaibarosan3568
@celmaibarosan3568 21 день назад
@@hoophierarchy He is really talented. I believe his playmaking ability will still be there, the only thing I worry about is his finishing will take a hit. I work in sports medicine and seen a lot of ACL injuries. Some people bounce back and get back to where they are at, others have issues with their body rejecting the correct, and others have issues with their non torn knee as they rely on it more. I think he is young enough and will have the right doctors to be ok but you can never tell.

Comparing him to Shai as a prospect is honestly pretty reasonable. Shai wasn't _close_ to the quick explosive athlete he is now when he was at Kentucky (or his first few seasons in the NBA) and he played with a similarly arrhythmic style that relied on stops and starts with unconventional below-the-rim finishes and timing. Slippery. Much like Topic. (And Dragic.) And Shai had the same shooting concerns and body/size/weight concerns too. Although SGA was a better defender. It's just a little disingenuous to make that comp because of what Shai has become. But Topic probably has that kind of upside, especially on offense. I hadn't heard that comp but it's really not that crazy.
@arturbellini6184
@arturbellini6184 Месяц назад
The TP comparison is weak, man. TP was undersized, Topic is oversized. TP was a lightning, Topic isn't even the fastest guard in this draft class. TP was a crazy shooter, Topic isn't a good shooter. The only thing that I can think that Topic is similar to Tony is the passing in traffic. This comp only exists because of the Spurs. He's more like Giddey, Lonzo (with way less D) or Dragic.
@hoophierarchy
@hoophierarchy Месяц назад
Giddey is fair. Inaccurate statement on the only similarity being passing though. 1, Tony Parker was not a “crazy shooter” he was at most league average for the majority of his career. He got better as his career went on, but he definitely was not a good shooter as a young player. Their finishing and the way they get to the rim and finish with below the rim is quite similar. Their size difference is accurate, but the way they get their buckets and the way they distribute is very similar
@justinbires6283
@justinbires6283 26 дней назад
@@hoophierarchyi buy topic way more than Giddey as a prospect being Topic is hyper aggressive in getting paint touches and pressuring the rim. There’s a part of me that if Topic can find a jumper I’d say Tyrese Haliburton and Michael Carter Williams hybrid. Maybe seeing Haliburton in his massive shooting slump has influenced this comp tho.

Topic has a strange verticality to his style. For me, he has too much risk: injuries, lack of shooting and subpar athleticism. I was thinking the Rockets might pick him but, at this point, I think I would prefer Shepherd or Dillingham, the KY guards translate well to the NBA.
@aspleen1102
@aspleen1102 22 дня назад
disagree... A PG who can't shoot with below average D... It's a no no for me. TP would not work in 2024 NBA. Sure if he magically become an average shooter (36.6% is the average 3P% in the NBA) he'll be good... But it's a gamble... Shooting 3P is not about individual scoring but about gravity. I don't care if he can finish and pass. If his Defender don't have to stick on him at the perimeter, the paint will be clog.

something about this guy screams bust (if he goes top 4, at least) his ball-handling is nothing amazing. His finishing might be good in the scrub league he plays in but against NBA defenses I think that will get shut down. and his jump shot is ugly as hell. he seems like more of a 6-10 sorta pick to me.

He shot 70% on half court finishes which is better than basically every star guard that has come out in the last 5-6 years. Players like Luka, AE, Maxey, Trae etc. He might not be an over-the-rim finisher but he’s elite in terms of finishing
