Thank you for taking the time and trouble to post this. Petrov was one of the greatest Russian pianists, and I had the absolute privilege of seeing him perform in London in 1986 when he performed, amongst many other works, Liszt's complete transcription of Berlioz's Symphony Fantastic on a Bosendorfer Imperial concert grand. Look out for the 13 cd box set of Petrov recordings that have been restored from the original master tapes using 24 bit technology, his sonority, colour, power and soul come shining through.
At a time when very few major pianists were recording Bach works of such length, what an incredible moment this is. Thank you so much for uploading. The contrast in the deliberate, but grand opening and the proceeding section filled with both energy and incredibly fluid as well. I have to wonder what Petrov would have done with solo Rachmaninoff, Liszt (outside of his legendary Paganini Etudes, original version), Beethoven, among other of the major piano composers. I wonder what Sokolov thinks of his playing, as a couple of elements - the polish and the grand scale of the playing seems to be something he would have enjoyed even when just a teenager at the time winning the Tchaikovsky Competition..
