A short overview, review of the Nikon AF-S 300mm F4D IF-ED. This lens will auto focus will all* Nikon DSLR cameras. That includes entry level models like the D40(x), D60, D3xxx and D5xxx lines. The lens is also compatible with most Nikon film cameras, because it has a physical aperture ring.
My written review can be found in the link below.

I love D type telephotos. They get a bad rap, but I find their performance quite good for the money. I'd love to try the 300 f/4 sometime.

The AF-S 300mm F4D is fully functional on modern Nikon cameras, like the D5200. 300mm is 300mm, but where the difference comes in is picture quality. Like most super zoom lenses the 55-300mm is a little weak on the long end of the zoom range. On the other hand a fixed focal length lens like the 300mm F4D is optimized for the type of photography you are interested in. You can also add a Nikon teleconverter (like the TC 14EII) to gain additional range, making it effectively a 420mm lens.

@tim broadbent yes, as mentioned in the description it will work with D3xxx cameras.

Got one with a broken Af-s motor for a bargain and paired with my old TC201 I get very amazing pics of the moon tonight definitely worth 150$ Canadian!

True you can. Better wording would be "apparent reach". In any case with modern high resolution cameras this lens does very well even when cropping heavily.
@Combatpzman
@Combatpzman 11 лет назад
That depends entirely on your skills as a photographer. I've never found VR useful for birds in flight anyway, since you want a shutter speed well over 1/500 (max recommended shutter speed for using VR/IS).
@Combatpzman
@Combatpzman 11 лет назад
No. Like all AF/AF-D lenses the physical aperture ring needs to set to the maximum aperture (in this case F32) in order for auto focus to work on most modern Nikon DSLR's. The camera still auto focuses at all aperture settings. On cameras like the D300s, D7100, D700 etc you can set the camera to switch aperture based on the settings of the aperture ring, but it is easier to change the aperture via the sub-command dial.
@Combatpzman
@Combatpzman 11 лет назад
It auto focuses with the TC14EII (or other 1.4TCs) on all Nikon DSLR's already, but yes it should auto focus with the TC17E and TC20EII &III on the D600 or D800.
@Combatpzman
@Combatpzman 12 лет назад
On Nikon DSLRs the physical aperture ring must be set to maximum aperture or the lens will not function, the camera will give a "ERR" message if another aperture setting is used (all "D" lenses must be set this way). In this case that means setting the physical aperture ring to F32. You can change the aperture setting on the camera body as usual.

@BigRooster747 That does not seem to be an issue in the real world. Most likely pushed by the marketing guys at Kurk to sell the third party foot.

You do have the same reach on FX, in fact on full frame it is what it is, 300mm - it's on DX that the "apparent reach" changes. It's basically just cropped down. You can do this on post after shooting on FX to achieve exactly the same results.

how about the purple fringing in this lens sir? non nano coating? is this can attached with my dx body n tc 1.4 new series sir for birding?
@Combatpzman
@Combatpzman 7 лет назад
You might see some purple fringing at F4, but it didn't happen often in my use. No nano coating, this is the older AF-S "D" not the newer "E" model. As for a TC you need a TC-14E or TC-14EII, as the newer model is not compatible.

I don't have access to a 200-500, so I cannot give any answers from experience with it. What I heard from people who have both is that the 300mm F4 focuses faster and is sharper, even with a teleconverter.
@oneprincesslea
@oneprincesslea 10 лет назад
Shooting the moon does not require long exposure. Based on what I read, the critical shutter speeds are between 1/60 to around 1/5 of a second. Typical moon shots at f8 ISO 200 are around 1/200. I would love to know if shutter speed of 1/30 gives you any problem.
@Combatpzman
@Combatpzman 10 лет назад
True, if all you want in the photo is the moon itself.

@pramit9 10 лет назад
Hey! Would you choose this lens with a 1.4x teleconverter or the newer Nikon 80-400mm?
@Combatpzman
@Combatpzman 10 лет назад
From an optical standpoint the AF-S 300mm F4 with the 1.4x TC is sharper than the AF-S 80-400mm VRII. As to picking one, it depends on what you value, the ability to quickly change focal lengths with a zoom, or the pure image quality that can be achieved by using a prime.

My Nikon F4 has Autofocus. If I buy this lens, why do I have to LOCK the aperture setting to F/32 when in the P mode, the camera sets my aperture and shutter speed automatically?
@Combatpzman
@Combatpzman 4 года назад
This is the physical aperture ring on the lens, not the in camera aperture setting. All Nikon AF and AF-D lenses with physical aperture rings must have those rings set to the maximum aperture for the computer on the camera read the aperture of the lens. Don't ask me why they did this, that's just how it works. If the physical ring is not locked in the F32 position the lens (AF and AF-D versions) the camera will not be able to control the aperture setting and an "ERR" message will appear on the top LCD/or rear screen. This does not apply to "G" or "E" lenses. This has no affect on the cameras aperture setting you make!
@Fritzafella
@Fritzafella 5 лет назад
Is This a manual Aperture Lens? Or did i Misunderstand setting it to f32?
@Combatpzman
@Combatpzman 5 лет назад
The lens can be used with the aperture set manually, on some cameras with the right settings. For auto or manual control via the cameras control dials, the aperture ring must be locked at F32.

How is this lens for in flight birding shots?, since it doesnt have the VR I'm not sure if it works good for in flight shots.
@kb8729
@kb8729 4 года назад
you shouldn't use VR for birds in flight, VR shouldn't be used laterally as it causes blur. VR off for birds in flight.
@Combatpzman

If that's what you'd like, you'll need to look else where unfortunately. I don't share full size images on the web.

@Combatpzman
@Combatpzman 10 лет назад
Yes the lens will work with the D5000. As to being able to hand hold it, that totally depends on how stead your grip is, and the shutter speed used.
@justmebill1
@justmebill1 10 лет назад
OK, Thanks !Combatpzman
@gazcrx
@gazcrx 8 лет назад
did you mean lock it in f32 to use auto mode or shutter priority.?
@Combatpzman
@Combatpzman 8 лет назад
Nikon DSLRs require D lenses to be locked in the F32 position for automatic, or manual, aperture control via the camera. If the lens is not in the F32 position the camera will display ERR and will not take pictures. Some higher end cameras (D7xx, D8xx D6xx, D7xxxx, D3/D4/D5 etc) this can be changed, but most people don't find it practical.

@kb8729

probably sharpness is more to do with prime not zoom and more light. I think most parts for japanese assembled lenses are made in china.

@Combatpzman
@Combatpzman 5 лет назад
@@cncdaddy That is typically a sign that the aperture ring on the lens is not locked at the maximum aperture (need to be at this setting to allow computer control). It could also be due to the CPU contacts on the lens being dirty.

Yes, in my last answer I was speaking of the AF-S 300mm F4D (shown in this video) vs the 200-500mm F5.6. For bird shooting every little bit of focusing speed is key, and the 300mm F4 is known to have the edge in that area, if that matters to you.
@kb8729
@kb8729 4 года назад
its a very large lens lol its less weight than a 70-200.
@Combatpzman
@Combatpzman 4 года назад
It's the same size and weight as the 70-200mm F2.8G VR, so I don't get what you are laughing about. Do you even have both? Compared to real supertelephoto lenses yes it is small, not even half the size of the 300mm F2.8, or 200-400mm, but for anyone who is used to kit style lenses, yes it is "large".
