I have Nikon D3200 with kit lens, and the 40mm f2.8. I use it mainly for food photography. I love this lens..

I use it on a d610 for food photography and the vignetting is very very low, you can easily eliminate it. Try it out on a fx!

Heavy vignetting on D750 and FX mode. In DX mode no vignette but only 10 megapixels.

Of course, you can, this one may be even a bit sharper than 35mm F1.8 DX, but 35mm F1.8 has wider aperture, so it can blur the background more.

I also use this excellent lens with the Nikon ES-1 Slide Copying Adapter & find it to be a better option than using a separate slide scanner to scan 35mm transparencies

Those are some lovely photos and a great review. Would you say that this lens would be a good choice for toy photography? Specifically 7 inch pose-able figures.

with this lense being a short focal length you wont need image stabilizer. even the 18=55 kit lense is non I.S and it works fine hand held

Yes, most of the macro shots where taken with camera mounted on tripod.

Thank you very much for this! I'm also a watch collector and have been looking for a lens with short focus distance to produce wrist shots with soft bokeh and also for dial/movement macros. The focus distance of my 50mm 1.8G prime is too large. Would you say this lens would be good for me? I shoot a D3100 (crop sensor).

Since the minimum focus distance is so low, you really have endless possibilities on how much you want your subject to fill the frame. I shoot model cars sometimes and i can shoot anything from the car as a whole to just the logo on the hood and fill the frame. it really is one of my favorite lenses!

I use a Nikon 55mm 2.8 ais micro lens on my Fx and Dx cameras for product and portraits. Sooo sharp and built like a tank.

I am really confused between this lens with 60mm 2.8 g and 105mm 2.8 g..which one of these lenses are better in food and product photography on dx cameras ? I mean the sharpness and the focal length Thanks for your helpful review

The sharpness is great with all of these lenses. Focal length is a matter of preference, I can't make general recommendation there.

I use this lens with a Nikon D700 and crop factor in the menu. It unfortunately brings the D700 to 5MP. Thé D700 is FX format works well.

What do you think of AF-S 35mm 1.8 compared to this 40!? And can a UV filter be attached to this!?

The sharpness is similar, but the 35mm has wider max aperture, so unless you need to shoot macro 35mm may be a better choice. Yes, you can use filters with this lens.

This is basically the AFD 60mm f/2.8 for 35mm and FX digital.

For macro definitely this one, 50mm F1.8 can blur the background even more, so it may be better for portraits, but 40mm is a good portrait lens as well.

Yes, it is suitable for that, but the lens will have to be close to the object, which makes is a bit more difficult to setup proper light. If you don't mind than, it is a good choice.

Great review :-) Do you think this lens can be used for slide digitizing ? Will the slide fill the frame , so to speak ? I have a Nikon D90 collecting dust , so this lens good perhaps kick some new life into the camera ? Or should I go with the 60 mm for my FX camera ? Thanks for the review

Hey there. One quick question. I'm looking for something simple to use for shooting pipes and watches for my shop. I don't need anything fancy, just a simple solution to shoot photos in my light box with nice details. I would use Nikon d90. I have a tripod and softbox setup. Important thing is I don't need to shoot really close. I just need as much details as I can get of example smoking pipe. Can you please help me and reccomend me a lens? Thank you very much

50 mm on d750 can do a "like" job? is it that area? just cause i got kit lens 20-120 nikon (something like that) i got 50mm and 85mm which one is the best to shot the watch? i like the 50mm actually but not sure

what is the main difference between this macro one and my nikon AF-S dx 18-55mm 3.5 - 5.6g vr? my intentional use is to take photos of t shirts that are laid down on a backdrop that is on the ground. i need to pretty much take the picture from like 4 feet or 5 ft distance from the ground up. would i need a macro lens or do you think the one i have should be fine? i pretty much did not want to use t shirt templates so i rather take a actual picture of my shirts and post them online. thank you for your time!

It is completely different lens than kit lenses. For that you don't need macro.

That lens cannot focus closer than 38cm, so I don't recommend it for product photography.

The Hybrid Shooter For product photography 105/ 2.8 would be an overkill? I need to find a macro to take product, insects photography. I have both DX and FX bodies. Trying to find something from the 40mm 2.8, 60mm 2.8 and 105 2.8 group.

105mm on full frame can work for some kinds of product photography, it is also a matter of preference, try all of the focal lengths on some zoom lens to see which focal length you prefer.

I prefer mirrorless cameras, but D5500 has much better lens selection, which is quite important. Better lenses for A6000 are expensive, but both are great cameras for the price.
