@@markturboi It's only useless to Marcus because he shoots in RAW..he can still be an avid & excellent birder!, for those of us who want RAW photos to work with which I do as well, it's indefensible why Nikon eliminated this feature from the "Bird" button option...just my two cents, great job Marcus on the review, thanks.

Not sure if you'll see this, but you have provided the most informative review of the P1000 I've seen. I have a story to tell that's too long for a comment. But yes, I bought one of these recently. I'm enjoying coming to grips with this over a Canon DSLR and multiple lenses (and a long break from photography). Thank you.

It's nice to see an honest review of this camera from a person that actually uses it. I've watched many "serious" reviewers totally dismiss it, poo poo it, or downright make fun of it. (Kai Wong comes to mind) But the fact that this video (a very good and informative one btw!) got over 71,000 views shows there's interest in and a market for such a camera. Good job.

I think a lot of people poo-poo point and shoots. But you can get very good images with a point and shoot, it's just more challenging in certain conditions.

Really good. Thank you for this. I’ve owned a P1000 for three months and it’s great to have everything I’ve noticed confirmed. A couple of other points to add. The extreme digital zoom can only be used in jpg. The Moon Mode only allows you to use jpg. A feature of the Moon Mode is that it assumes you’ll be shooting on a tripod and puts the camera into three second delay mode to allow the camera shake to die down before releasing the shutter.

I have not shot with SLR for thirty years. I looked at cameras for over two months. I considered mirrorless, DSLR, the EXPENSE of multiple lenses, compacts you name it... I wanted to enjoy photography (not publish or print) again. I shot on the birding mode for my first time in a low gray Vancouver BC cloudy day, both video and still. I was wowed and pleased. I got great inside close up shots of Christmas tree ornaments. I tend to not shoot in the rain, but bought a huge golf umbrella for walks with my wife to hold if I shoot. I understand all the negatives you mentioned in the video, but I am still wowed by what I got in this camera for the price as an average Joe on the street who is recovering this hobby in retirement. If I was a "pro" I might be disappointed, but I can do SO much with this camera. Already people have been amazed by pictures I took. Thanks for your candid and honest review.
@MarcusVorwaller

Thanks Steve. You're right, it's a very versatile camera. I didn't even mention the ability to shoot macro in the video, but I've also found it to come in handy a couple times. I think this will be a fun camera to play with for years to come.
@markharris5771
@markharris5771 5 лет назад
Steve Wallace I was forced into retirement through ill health about 10 years ago. Although I learnt my way round the darkroom about 45 years ago and had a SLR for as long I’d always tried to avoid making photography my main hobby as it was my older brother's thing. I decided to return to my childhood passion of birdwatching and nature, it wasn’t long before I realised I wanted to record what I see and I bought myself a Fujifilm HS30EXR and even though this would have been 9 years ago, like yourself, I was blown away by the quality. I can imagine just how much bridge cameras have advanced since mine hit the market. I admit I now have a couple of prosumer DSLRs now and a few analogue cameras with my own darkroom, but I still have my 9 year old bridge camera in my wife's car. It is also capable of taking a decent image, even if it does take an age to record a RAW file. I hope your rediscovered hobbies give you as much joy as mine have given me, though with a much healthier bank account as photography is very addictive...as is birdwatching.
@samhunt9380
@samhunt9380 5 лет назад
I never went the DSLR way after SLR, like you Mark. I have used a series of Fujifilm bridge cameras over the years and heartily agree with you regarding the HS30EXR. The photos have been exceptional. I sold mine to my sister and progressed to the HS50EXR and would be still using it if I can figure out how to successfully remove the rubberised surface which has gone sticky. A brilliant camera just the same. I moved on the the Panasonic Lumix FZ2000/2500 with the brilliant Leica 24-480 lens. Just bought the P1000 and yet to use it. I don't think I will use it to replace the other cameras though. A time and place for each I guess...Cheers and I hope good health is with you now...

New sub here. Great review. I have the P900 and P1000. Along with a mirrorless Sony. I love the P1000 and haven’t come close to regretting it! Mostly bird photos and the Sony can’t come close to the shots I can get with the P1000 with the range. The thing about this camera is it gives you the opportunity to get shots you wouldn’t ever even have the opportunity to get otherwise. Well worth it in my opinion.

Great down-to-earth review! I ordered the P1000 just yesterday, along with four spare batteries and charger. I’m upgrading from a Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FZ150 (24X). The Panasonic has been a frustrating camera to capture subjects quickly while focusing manually. While I prefer to focus manually, the Panasonic was poorly designed for that purpose-very very slow and awkward-back and forth until I get it right. While I’m looking forward to capturing some fantastic moon shots-in RAW-on a tripod, I wasn’t aware, until your review, that you can’t use the Moon or Bird modes in RAW. I’ll keep that in mind. Thanks again!!
@dannymcneal

Update: I returned the P1000 for the Sony CyberShot RX10 IV. While I miss the zoom of the Nikon, that’s about the only thing I miss. Focusing with the Sony is light years faster than the Nikon, and the images are sharper. Not knocking the Nikon, because it definitely has its place, but I am very happy with the Sony.

I'm tempted to get this for vacations. I have a Canon with a 50x optical zoom which is good but sometimes I want something...a little bit further. This is WAY further. I plan on going to Alaska next year and want to have the range from wide angle to way zoomed in and can't do that with DSLR...without some serious money and serious baggage. Plus the photos are for me, for my memory and my google photos. I'm guessing I will be plenty happy with the photos for those purposes.

Hi Marcus. Thanks for great vid on NP1000. I bought this camera back in 2021. Took some amazing pics of a baby red tail hawk that was sitting in an oak tree right above where I was. After that I had a lot of issues getting the camera to focus. I tried the moon…nothing. My brother has the Nikon 900 and he takes great pics of the moon. I am out in nature mostly and my interests are in the animals and birds in nature. I’m going to give the NO1000 another shot and hopefully I can get some good pics. I’m a stones throw away from Hwy 1 coast in California and am partial to the birds, like pelicans. Thanks again.

Hi Marcus, i got one of these and really put it through the test from macro to 3000mm bird photography. The best I could of the battery time was 2.5 hours, so I am amazed that you could get 4- hours. Perhaps you turned yours off/on throughout the morning, whereas I kept mine on continuously. So would be interested to know what you did to get the longevity for the battery. I am going to buy 2 extra batteries with a charger and carry them with me, because I have twice had it shutdown on me whilst out on a trip. I have not done any video yet as I want to see what it is capable of re photos before I consider video, which I will do once I master the camera, and this is what I ultimately purchased it for. Agree in relation to the timelag between shots, but I have gotten used to this and do not do burst as I tried it when I first got it and was not happy with it. Believe it will be better suited to macro nature stills such as fungi and flowers so will see when they are in season. Agree with you that this is better alternative to digiscoping as it less expensive and the P1000 has the range you are looking for. I am quite happy with the bird photos which I have taken and in some cases have found them sharper than my Canon 7D2 with 400mm, but this is my experience. The P1000 I use with an LED light and thus have no problems in low light as yet we are still in summer here) but will be interested to see how it performs in winter. Overall in relation to birds, found it best around 2000mm and then the sharpness and the stability starts to fall off as you have already stated. Nice to see a review like yours from someone that has really used it and honest opinions, which his great.

@kokhowe

I think part of the problem is because they are not using it as it is meant to be used - for wildlife and bird photography. For ordinary pictures, there are certainly better cameras out there. Also, people tend to get fixated on image quality issue and complain about the small sensor size, which to me is only a small inconvenience.

@@eddyg1794 Yes I would. The first thing I did with my Canon Powershot SX60HS was to design a chest - mounted camera caddy. I carry my Canon around _everywhere_ mounted on this gadget and don't know it's there. The camera caddy has a clip on the right shoulder for my little folding tripod stool and a clip on the left shoulder for my tripod. I've never understood why Canon or Nikon have never developed a gizmo like this commercially. It looks like a little armchair and the camera sits in it like a dream. The straps cross over on my back. It has a little cover so I can cover it for extreme sun or spray or blown sand on the beach. I'd make such a caddy for the P1000 too. No problemo.

Yes if you want 3000mm. I want a P600 zoom with better pictures. There is nothing in the 1000mm range with bigger sensor. I think a 1000mm Sony RX10M5 would be my dream. The P900 has made me dislike the Nikon P series as the P600 took better pics. As far as I can see, Nikon think the zoom is still the winner and forgot that the sensor can't handle f8. The other thing is focus speed is also important on bird pics. The number if missed shots with my P900 has also ruined it for me.

What kind of camera/lenses do you use currently for birding? Regarding bridge cameras I think that the Canon SX70 is a great choice as the camera and viewfinder specs are kind of the same as the Nikon bridge cameras. Also it's more handy and less expensive. Together with a pair of binoculars it's a good go to gear.

Nice review, logically presented information and you hit all the relevant points. I am considering this model specifically for nature video, I also want to video the Moon over a period of time, I will use a tracking device. I was wondering about the build quality, despite the lack of weather sealing, would you say its well built? Is the tripod bush strong? It looks to me that Nikon could have positioned further forward because at 3k the lens will way out there, amplifying the slightest vibration. I wonder if you have come up with a fix for securing on tripod and eliminating shake. I suspect that grabbing stills from 4k footage might yield better results than any of the general photo modes?. No way was Nikon ever going to put a bigger sensor into this camera because it would banjax a huge selection of their camera models and piss the rest of the industry off big time. Thanks for the informative review, well done.

And finally, In bird mode and moon mode is it the software that prevents an image being taken in raw or is it something more fundamental? Thanks B

I tried the P1000 some years ago as a friend bought it - I was not really impressed in overall. Just the extreme zoom looked interesting, but the image quality was even for basic images without using tele at all just mediocre and the stabilizer just HURTS. For Macro on the other hand, this camera impressed me, but still the price was just too high from the beginning for all the downsides with the P1000. I mean just the fact only ISO 100, at best ISO 200 is usable renders this camera very useless for most things! I though for years "how poor must i be" with cameras just having ISO 400-800 at best usable, but noisy ISO 400? So literally a super old analoge camera with since DECADES EXPIRED film will perform better than the P1000? And 1000$ for that? Would be ok if the P1000 would be a product of 2006 or so... I tried my first wildlife with a super old 75-300mm lens on a EOS RP, and you probably guessed it- it was a pain in the a**, especially the old 75-300mm IS USM was just trash, at best out of 5000 images 1 usable and that with just luck and manual focussing since the AF was completely useless above 200mm! The IQ also sucked hard above 200mm, but it was what i had^^ Sold this lens and a few others like a macro lens and other zooms which i replaced recently with a "cheap" 2nd hand EF 100mm 2.8L Macro and a EF 24-70L and the most interesting lens - the RF 800 F11 flic.kr/s/aHBqjA4MLH These are the results of the first 2-3 weeks i use the RF 800 F11 now. I prefer rather this "cheap" combination for less than 2000$ than a P1000 which is more universal usable and cheaper, but in overall just not really charming in any way. Multiple months and ONE IMAGE with the 75-300 vs 3 weeks with RF 800 and these are only a few, many still not even edited at all. And people with such superzooms always looked a bit creepy for me in the wrong enviroment.... i mean a big lens alone doesnt mean anything, if then that its a proper lens mostly, but a (super)zoom stalker bridge camera or a lens the size of a RPG launcher where it doesnt really look right....

You look like Bollywood actor Arjun Rampal and your voice and the way you speak is like Tamil actor Kamal Hassan. I am not much into camera stuff, it was just a coincidence I found your video while looking for some powerful zoom videos.

Great review, thanks. I have been looking at this camera because of the zoom. I have the Panasonic G9 with the 100 - 400 and feel limited. I was wondering how the P1000 would compare with the G9 and Sigma 150 600 with the 1.4x or 2x converter. This would get you somewhere near for the a similar price (if you already owned the G9)

I have an Olympus u4/3 with a 100-300 Pany lens, so 600 mm equivalent. No converter. After I got this everything else seems just way too short. You can keep zooming, and just keep zooming. I never run out of zoom. If you shoot in bright light, either overcast or sunlight, you will get awesome pictures if you have a steady hand and keep the ISO below 600. Also, this camera is just fun to use because you have such a big zoom range. Anything you can see, you can fill the frame. Everything. Now yes, if you go to a sporting event, or a park where the 600 mm equivalent is good enough, your Panasonic WILL be leagues better. Hands down. I still use my Oly with a 140-300 equivalent lens for motorsports and things like that. But if you need the reach this is the best thing out there. It's pricy and the IQ is average for a 1/2.3 sensor but the zoom saves it if you are a birder. Check out the DPReview forums; amazing pictures with this thing.

I feel you have given a very balanced review. I have selected this and Canon 5D Mark three. Still not decided between the two. Do you feel it has good picture quality? You have said, that you recommend given certain parameters, but are you satisfied with that?
@MarcusVorwaller
@MarcusVorwaller 5 лет назад
Vimal Krishna the only reason to buy this over the 5d is if you really need the zoom. The image quality of the 5d will be MUCH better than the p1000. The p1000 is not a good camera for your primary camera, it’s made for special circumstances.

@@MarcusVorwaller Many thanks for your clear help in the decision making, I needed that. I wanted a view from someone like you. I will need Canon as my primary camera. Thanks again!!! By the way, I was working in Canon albeit in high-speed printer section :-)

Hi Marcus. I'm considering buying one of these primarily for wildlife video and I've seen some impressive results on RU-vid. How do you find the autofocus when shooting video? Is it fairly stable or do you often need to make manual adjustments using the focus ring? Thanks.

Hi I just bought this today and have started exploring menu and focusing system. I own a sony a9 and with 200 600 and 1.4 convertor. Do you still have this system? Or sold it? The reach with this camera is amazing, and I primarily bought this for videos at 4k. Can you create a video on focusing modes with video. For example with birds in bushes it lags, and I feel to override at times to adjust. Your experience would help. Thanks

So what's the p1000 got that the p900 hasn't?
@MrWesleymoon
@MrWesleymoon 5 лет назад
Raw, 4k and tad more powerful telephoto lens. For the price If I was going to buy a super telephoto camera it would be the p900. Heck the p900 is about half the weight / size also! You can get new p900's still for around 400.00 and it is a no brainer to me.
@MarcusVorwaller
@MarcusVorwaller 5 лет назад
The feature that I wanted most was raw images. If that's not a big deal to you then the p900 is, like Wesley said, much smaller and less expensive with very similar performance otherwise.

I was looking for the nudist camp mode(..?) The birds images is almost a struck of luck, maybe one out of three. The containers were really neat. I wish you could've taken some 4K's of natural grounds around you and also play with some of the image filters to see the other extensions of this camera. Everybody is shooting the moon and the birds. I wish to see some city or parks scenes; video & stills. I really like your video presentation. Very calm and articulated language. Jeremy Irons would be proud to see his lost at birth kid.
