@@RealWorld you're welcome. I've since bought this camera (got a great deal on ebay) and honestly I'm impressed. I don't know of another camera that can get pictures pictures of birds and the moons of Jupiter.... lol.
Great review without any leaning toward supporting a specific brand of product. Appreciate the honesty and sincerity. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
I have had such a camera for more than two years and every time I find something new for myself from such reviews. Thanks a lot for your work! Many thanks!
As usual a very informative video. Your channel for me is a source of honest appraisal of a product. There is a desire to make people aware. Highly appreciate your being.
One of the best reviews out there and You have done it. There is a lot of negative bashing of this camera in particular to its sensor size. People forget that if they were to buy this much power in the lens form alone it would cost a bundle. But here one gets it all for a 1000 dollars or so with the prices falling to boot. It is not really for someone as the *only* camera in house. But a keeper for those special needs, and with Raw files + post processing, fantastic is the word.
thanks for the post/feedback victor and glad to be of help!:) fully agree - some photographers are overly focused on the sensor size with this camera. yes, the sensor is small but for good reason - the sensor to lens ratio creates an incredible zoom factor. yes, not great for portraits but great for any looooong needed zooms like the moon:).
Great review, and you also managed to shoot and present some very solid images. Many reviewers just dismissed this camera. I recently had a play with one of these and discovered you can get some good things out of it if you know what you're doing. It's a good astral and long distance back-up for subjects you just can't get in any other way that you need to record, rather than present in pristine form.
Beautiful review. Nice and superb. Main pros I felt are, 1. Ability to shoot in RAW. 2. Manual Focus 3. Massive zoom 4. Bird shooting 5. Moon shooting 6. VR is awesome Some cons are 1. Image quality is not good above 1300mm. Some images have slightly fuzzy. 2. Tripod screw is not in right position. (Manufacturers does not think about centre of gravity) At full zoom level, it may fall off or at least not stable. I have Nikon p900, earlier version of this one, which doesn't have raw shooting capacity. Also tripod screw is fitted in the wrong place. But definitely a major upgrade from Nikon coolpix p900 to p1000. Cost wise it is very high compare to p900. I really enjoyed all the 30 minutes of the video. Thank you.
Thanks for the post/feedback Ravi!:) You have some interesting points ... the fuzzy images at higher zooms might be attributed to the atmosphere and/or using VR at relatively slow shutter speeds /and/ the center of gravity does shift at full zoom:).
Great video. My go to camera is the Nikon P950. The camera works great for me. I’m able to take pictures at 200-300 yards with no issue. I love the bird mode. I can’t see ever buying another camera. Thanks for sharing your experience with us. ❤❤❤
We started walking together when I bought my first DSLR , the Nikon 3400. Your channel stood head and shoulders above the rest in relation to the information/advice offered - and I definately loved your music selections! So here we are in 2023 and I am thinking about buying a Coolpix P1000! I know EXACTLY where to get a balanced opinion.................
thanks for the post/feedback!:) i am a bit late to respond and not certain if you made the purchase:). if so, enjoy the camera. if not, consider the pros and cons showcased in the video. i love this camera for super zoom shots (i.e. moon shots are awesome!), however the small sensor creates challenges when taking standard/regular photos.
I enjoyed the video & appreciate the un-biased review. Ive been using the p1000 for a couple off months. After a couple off outings, i found this camera a joy to use. as you say, you do need to use a tri-pod at range, but thats the same for any range over 600mm. the point you make about in camera battery charging you can get third party chargers, which i have done. p.s keep up the good work.
Appreciate your post/feedback!:) Good to hear from someone using the camera on a more frequent basis. I do not have access to the camera but wish I did for the total eclipse - would have capture some awesome/epic shots!:)
I feel like this camera would be good for me. I frequently go to work with my husband outdoors and its not always a great idea to have a camera with a bunch of lenses with me. I have missed a lot of shots because I didn’t have my zoom with me that particular day. Great detailed video. The music you play during the slide show is awesome, as always, it wouldn’t be your channel without it, its kinda like your signature. I love it. Thanks 🙏
Thanks for the post/feedback and good to hear from you!:) This is a solid camera but has a small sensor. Nonetheless, it is great for any type of zoom ... still amazed by shots of the moon:).
If you want many followers, you just have to make many videos. Quantity is more important than quality. Like Ken Wheeler. The guy is a self infatuated nutcase (maybe many of us are, but unlike Wheeler we try not to make it too obvious), and he repeats himself endlessly, and most of his videos aren’t all that interesting, because they’re totally unprepared. But he sure puts out a lot of them, and just look how many followers he’s accumulated.
You need to apply the crop factor also to the aperture so effectively, everything shown has to be multiplied by 5,7 times. In addition 1/2.3” can go max to ISO800 without huge noise problems. The trick around it is actually to use a tripod at the lowest ISO or shoot in black & white :)
Thanks for this review! I like it that you talk about the 5.56 crop factor, and that it isn’t really 3000 mm, but rather 539 mm. But the crop factor applies to the aperture as well! So it's alright to call it a 4.3 - 539 mm f/2.8 - 8. But it’s not okay to call it a 24 - 3000 mm f/2.8 - 8. If you apply the crop factor to the focal length, you must apply it to the aperture as well. So it’s really the equivalent of a 24 - 3000 mm f/15.5 - 44.5! So no wonder that it doesn’t do smaller apertures. But I'm surprised at how good the image quality is at these extreme focal lengths. I really didn’t expect that. I own a Sony Cybershot DSC HX400V with a Zeiss 24 - 1200 mm equivalent lens, and if I take pictures of anything far away, the IQ really sucks. It’s fine for the first 50 ft, but already at 50 metres it begins to look pretty dismal, and at a quarter mile it just falls apart, even on a sunny day, while my APS-C with a 150-600 mm zoom still looks fine. Your moon shot looked great to me! It must have something to do with the relatively good size of the front lens element, I guess: It’s much bigger than my Sony's.
Thanks for the post/feedback!:) LOL - agreed ... the crop factor applies to the aperture as well. I had to work harder to get the most out of this camera ... in the end - the extreme zoom shots were nice:).
You do know if anyone was to make a 24-3000 f2.8-8 lens for a full frame it would be the size of a Truck? 😂 This is all "Equivalence" they are referring to. Talking about aperture, I completely agree, but f2.8 is f2.8 in term of light gathering but DOF is going be of a 539mm F8 Lens.
I'm very much impressed by this camera. The pictures are very much acceptable especially during the brightness of the day and even at night, it can be adjusted to take awesome pictures. Plus it can shoot 4K videos at very long distances. So who cares about removable lens? This is all the lens I need... Perfect!
You forgot to mention the cost. For the price you can buy a dslr plus lenses that would serve you better. That noise should be a warning. Better photos with a cheap 70/300 for birding. Always appreciate your reviews!👊
Excellent video. My teenager son decided to buy this camera for his adventures. He wants to do some bird watching and of course train spotting. I think this camera will do the trick. I think he made the right choice. The zoom is incredible.
That thing is built like a Soviet tank. The video seems to have much better (faster) focus than the d5600. I’m very impressed by the range and quality of photos it can take in good light. Low light is clearly a challenge.
Awesome review mate, thanks for all the good info. You keep sort of shaking the camera in your final thoughts, can you feel some slight knocking from inside when doing that?
Thanks. That's a great video. You have made it clear here with your shots, photography is not only about gears, it's more a mix: art + gear + know your gears and what you are doing, what you want to do or shoot... 16 MP, 1/2.3",... of course there are some limitations (Noise, Low Light, aperture going down to 8 when zooming in,...) but your shots are excellent Yes this bridge superzoom camera is big. But bridge cameras are still good options for people who want to learn photography without spending too much. You have a bit all in one body: DSLR and Mirrorless features, a bit of wide and a bit of telephoto, mic and headphones jacks, 4k,... Hope #Nikon will bring back a brand new 1" sensor (or a 1.5, MFT multi aspect sensor) like the DL24-500. A 1" sensor, built-in EVF, touchscreen (tilting, fully articulated), 20MP, much more improved lens... a good hybrid bridge for stills and videos to match the #RX10MIV, #FZ1000MII, #LeicaVLux5, #FZ2500 or #FZ2000, #G3X or #PowershotG3X... BTW the specs on the DL24-500 were impressive, too bag #Nikon cancelled the DL serie : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PYsg9rmVceI.html Good luck and keep enjoying photography.
Thanks for the post/feedback Jim!:) This is a versatile camera/lens, however the sensor size makes it challenging in low light, although shooting in RAW and leveraging Lightroom does help:).
This is a tiny sensor with limited detail and high iso issues. It's a nice fun camera which I use for shots like going to Yellowstone but is nothing like what a pro Camera can do so it depends on the specific needs you have. At the reviewer... You are forgetting the effects of refraction at f8
Ahhhh yes, refraction relates to quantum physics and tends to show itself at super high apertures although I question how noticeable it becomes to the naked eye:). Refraction has little to not impact on most cameras in my opinion, however at f/8 with a crop factor of 5.56, refraction will play a bigger role. I captured the moon (post on my IG account) at 2600mm f/7.1 at 1/15 of second and did not notice much if any impact, although I suspect the shutter speed played a larger role in impact to detail:). Nonetheless, the end result looks good in my opinion.
Hello sir I wanna buy my first dslr And I wanted to ask. Which one should I go for? I have thought of these cameras 200d, 750d or d3400 I wanna learn photography plus also want a overall good camera in terms of videos as well
If videos are important to you then I would choose the 200D. It's a solid overall camera and the dual pixel technology does a very good job with the auto focus while filming moving subjects. There is also a newer model (250D) out now, but if the price is cheaper the 200D does the job as well. If you want to film yourself or take selfies, you can flip out the screen of the 200D. The D3400 would give you a very good sensor with regards on image quality. If you prefer just to take stills, then it's also a very good camera because it gives you a a lot of capabilities in dynamic range when you post process the RAW images.
3:25 Probably because the moon was one of the most popular subjects with the P900. You'll see hundreds of videos on youtube of people testing the P900's zoom on the moon.
I think I paid $500 for my old P900…..great for wildlife, bird watching, viewing the mountains, storm tracking. Not the best for clear long range pictures, but for basic long range observations it’s fantastic, even if it’s huge and cumbersome.
Thanks for the Review. Like the observations towards the end. In-Body battery charging is a bummer. A definite Con. The battery is on one side of the body and the charging cable is on the opposite side. Why !!
You missed out on a huge plus for this camera. Macro. A lo of people think of macro as getting the camera really close to the subject, and that is necessary on some lenses. However, getting close like that scares critters away, and can give problems with shadows. The P1000 can do macro from the telephoto end. It means being able to fill the frame with bugs and other small things, but have the camera a few meters away. It means that critters keep doing whatever they were doing without feeling threatened, and shadows are not an issue. It make the P1000 a stand-out macro camera. It is worth comparing its macro to the best quality super-zoom, Sony’s RX10 Mk4. The Sony has a much larger 1 inch sensor and much faster apertures, inevitably leading to much higher quality images, but that wonderful fast lens comes at a cost - a much shorter tele range plus macro that is very poor in comparison. It doesn’t magnify as much as the P1000, and the best macro is at 50mm and 600mm, but between those two points it has much reduced magnification. So you would buy the Sony if the priority is image quality and low light performance, and you would buy the P1000 if the priority is tele reach and macro.
The P1000 is a great camera to zoom into various subject but is not a true macro (creating a 1:1 representation on the sensor). I created a video on macro photography which can be a bunch of fun and this camera will get you close - really close:).
The biggest selling point for me would be the focus ring. Point and shoot cameras are not great with auto focus. So many shots lost because the camera grabbed the wrong item and blurred the image. If they would only put a focus ring on point and shoot cameras, no matter the price, it would make a HUGE difference. The sensor size is another major selling point for me. Don't need a lot of fancy settings if they get the most important ones.
I have this camera and to say I adore it is an understatement! For me is the ultimate camera! That said I want to focus on it weakness; low light photography. If you are shooting handheld you will be forced in most cases to raise the ISO. I agree that the maximum ISO number for good images is 800 with this camera. What I did is that I bought a tripod. It allowed me to raise the exposure time instead of the ISO. It worked in almost any case. Except of one. And I don't know if there is a solution for this. I wanted to photograph the people passing by through the street. But not in the artistic way where they are blurred. In the normal one. To do so I had to raise the ISO and loose detail. I don't know if there is any other way. The tripod didn't help much on that.
I am seriously considering getting one of these. I never will be able to afford a real wildlife zoom, one of those big $2000 or more. I also am very impressed with how you got those noise shots to turn out so well in post processing. Is it too much to ask if you could do a video on your workflow you used to create these fine results? I know there are plenty of methods out there, I am thinking you might have blended a duplicate layer with overlay and then added a high pass filter??? How about sharing the magic? Thank you my friend! Moonpie
Although the cost for the P1000 is not cheap, it is still much cheaper compared to a traditional DSLR body/lens combination to achieve similar reach (much much cheaper:)). If you have good light, the camera does well. If you are in relatively low light, watch for noise:). I created a video on using Lightroom to remove noise that might be of help - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pKnpLb32j1w.html
YES! I have the smaller model and am dying to get my hands on this. Fantastic for wildlife (have some vids on my channel, novice type...) So excited i commented before watching it all, but I know your video will be good either way 👍
Great review. This is my first time with you.. The main question was the weight and sensor. I use a Nikon Z 7ll with a Sigma 150-600 lens. Now that's a big beast. Thanks again for the review.
The macro mode is not truly macro (meaning a 1:1 representation on the sensor; I create a macro vid that might be of help - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TzdY3azkzYc.html ), but the mode will help to lock focus when the lens is closer to the subject. I enabled the macro mode on a few shots in the video which seem to work well in my opinion (dragon fly an flowers).
I got a B700 instead of the p950 or 1000. Just decided the extra weight would be too much for long hikes. B700 is almost like carrying a phone, it's pretty light. The 950 seems to have better dynamic range but the b700 is pretty good. In good light I have had some stunning photo's. The range makes up for not having a m43 or apsc sensor. Still wish I had got the p1000 from time to time but got too many cameras anyhow 😀
Fabulous review, thorough and professional. I have a question about the tripod head you use. I found as the lens is extended the cg sifts forward and the image moves. Have you experienced this, and if so, any suggestions on how the P1000 might be more securely mounted on a tripod?
Thanks for the post/feedback/question Thomas!:). I discovered similar challenges when the lens was fully extended. As expected, the weight shifts forward and the mounting plate must be locked down and the head needs to be tightened otherwise the camera will drift:). I first noticed the drift when shooting the moon ... when using extreme zooms any slight movement is magnified:).
Would not hurt:). I have used something similar to this one - amzn.to/2RtEN20 ... a nice locking plate, however the ball head will need to be tightened in addition to the plate.
Isolating colors is a great technique to emphasize various parts of the image making for a unique snapshot:). Some cameras offer built-in features to isolate color but I use Lightroom to do the same and created a video on the technique as well - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-He-hfOgoMQM.html
I’ve been watching different videos for a few days and got confused. I got some confidence after watching this video of yours. Tell me I am a brand new picture lover, will this camera be suitable for me
Great Video. I am so glad I watched this video. I am buying the camera in 2 weeks. After I master how to set up the menu I hope I can take some excellent photographs of birds.
Unfortunately, YT compresses all resolutions including 4k. Nonetheless, we/humans do not reap the benefits as noted in the following article - www.forbes.com/sites/kevinmurnane/2016/08/11/4k-resolution-rules-tv-screens-but-look-the-emperor-has-no-clothes/#117e6154eaa5 ... companies started marketing 4k as the next great thing and soon they will market 8k and perhaps 16k. We/humans are not capable of realizing the benefits of 4k let alone 8k ... we are hitting the point of diminishing returns:). Marketing efforts up-sell the benefits to sell product.
Great review, one of the most informative I've come across on YT. This deserves a sub! Quick question, comparing the Canon sx70 hs and this one. Would you say the image quality (or the camera in general) is significantly better on the Nikon to justify the 500€/$ price difference?
Thanks for the post/feedback/question Sven:). Yes, there are many differences between that two cameras that may justify the cost. They both share the same size sensor, however Nikon put more glass/lens in the camera to reach 3000mm which is nice:). The P1000 also has an ISO of 6400 vs 3200 in the sx70 which can make a difference depending on the available light.
What this camera is capable of, dslr's can not do... Or it'll cost pretty pretty exorbitant... I know it from my sony dsc hx300. Zoom is a really big advantage about bird or building photography.... Even one day 2 girls was waving their arms and were giving me poses when i was on the bridge. That time bridge camera was the only thing that i needed or a fast opening parachute :D
LOL - agreed:). This camera fills a the extreme zoom void ... a void that no other camera can match for the price at this time. Albeit with a smaller sensor but that is the foundation for a workable price point.
