In a world where decent advanced fixed lens compacts are hard to come by, the Nikon Coolpix P7000 emerges from the boiling surface of quality. This is a very obscure genre-a fixed lens camera that features DSLR-style features and a larger sensor than nearly every advanced point-and-shoot on the market. Nikon's Coolpix P7000 is ideal for the photography student, professional who needs a buddy for their D700 or 7D, or part-time photographer who needs a quick shot without messing with interchangeable lenses.
But the Nikon Coolpix P7000 is not alone, for the Canon PowerShot G12 wants a piece of the pie as well. In fact, both cameras are the only models of their ilk. You either go for the Nikon Coolpix P7000, or the Canon PowerShot G12. The Panasonic Lumic DMC-LX5 is similar when it comes to imaging, but it cannot compare to the external features flaunted by the P7000 and G12. So, our quest today is to determine which one is right for you-an undeniably grueling task, since both cameras performed exceptionally.

This is by far my favorite gear review site/channel. Extremely informative they ACTUALLY form an opinion when comparing two different brands/items, they don't have an obvious loyalty to a particular brand and they stray away from trying to be cute or funny. Plus their host is far from obnoxious. Great videos, great advice, 5 stars.

Using base iso is better for long exposure if you're shooting raw. The cap isn't an issue if you're going to get a better exposure by using base iso. If you shoot jpg this is a definite issue, if you shoot raw and base iso this isn't an issue.

Great review. You cleverly anticipated what potential buyers are comparing before deciding in this range of camera. Thank you for showing color tests which are often ignored even though they are primordial for image quality.

Great comparison. I just bought the P7000 and can't wait for it to arrive. I'm surprised your one big "deal breaker" was the P7000's limit on long exposure times. All you have to do is choose a lower ISO and expose longer which gives you better quality than higher ISO. An ISO of 3200 is really only needed if you cannot do a long exposure in low light (e.g., hand held shot or need to freeze a moving subject and therefore need a short exposure). I guess you had to really stretch to find a flaw.

@brianminkc actually the one big advantage of the D7000, or any DSLR is the ability to achieve a shallow depth of field. Also the auto focus is faster and more accurate, the viewfinder is brighter and has a 100% field of view and accuracy, the larger sensor paired killer glass makes for superb image quality, they have much better high ISO performance, and the list goes on. there's now way a $500 point and shoot will out perform a DSLR. They both have their place.

I have both cameras, the Nikon p7000 and Canon G12, and I love them both, but if I were to choose only one of them, I'd definitely keep the Canon G12. Tremendously superior and better built. Period. Which doesn't mean the Nikon p7000 is bad.

Agreed... one uses a longer exposure to avoid high iso settings.. aside from certain creative photography effects. Definitely not a deal breaker..!

@175myles The P100, P300, P500 from Nikon, & the S9100 that you mentioned all can do slow motion video, depends on budget & the features you need. Looks like none of them will play back what you've recorded in one of the slow motion playback modes larger than VGA (640x480) at the current time, and as you probably know by now, the slower you want the slow motion playback to be, the smaller the size of the playback box will be on your screen. It'll look okay if you can put up w/ its small size.

0:38 I figured out what that sound is. If you used a phone to record this, then it was probably receiving/transmitting data. If you used a DSLR or something like that, then probably an encoding error unless you record in RAW format. Then I have no idea what it is.

Great video - you covered all the important features and went into great detail WITH examples. Thanks! One question though - do you really find you need long exposures over 1/2 second at ISO 800? If you're doing long exposures aren't you after low ISO in order to minimise noise?

G12 FTW! Thanks for the comparison between the two. It is helpful, despite brianminkc's complaint. These two cameras are obvious close competitors, thus, you need that side-by-side in a review if people are trying to make a decision.

@175myles Just did a bit more research today on the P7100, & it turns out the lens, sensor, & screen are all the exact same items from last year's P7000. The only difference in the screen this year is Nikon put it on a couple of hinges to let this year's iteration "tilt" up & down but doesn't let you swing it left to right or rotate it, as I mentioned before. Hopefully they fixed the firmware & got rid of last year's operational glitches, doesn't look like Nikon's done much else w/ it.

I'm confused about you saying that there is no zoom in video on the g12. That's one of my favorite features about it is that I can zoom in all the way while I'm in video...

@175myles The P7100 didn't do much "upgradong" from the P7000. A new tilt-out 921K screen on the back (just up and down, and NOT side to side as well) is about it. Hopefully Nikon made changes in the firmware to address the problems listed in this video and elsewhere re: the P7000. DPreview says the S9100's "only real weakness...is image quality in poor light, @ high ISO settings", & "the S9100 images at high ISO sensitivity settings do still lack detail...compared to the best...competition".

I am not particularly loyal to Nikon. But I have got a P7000 recently. I am also not interested in videos. I have been to an open air even in the night and to Russia in the winter with the camera. The results are outstanding.

Your video actually made me spent about 3 hours on the internet, digging up the features of both cameras, and I'm not quite convinced still. Quess P7000 will win, just because of the 3,5mm jack (which is important for me) and, mostly really lower price range than G12 in my country. But still don't know. Any advices?

@bohnstube, Not worried about the tilty screen, I never use the one on my Aunties D5100 or my Uncles FZ100. I'm still more interested if it does the slow motion video.

Video is obviouslly biased toward the Canon as he mentiones 3-4 times that dealbreaker was shutter speed of 1/2 sec @ 3200 ISO. Question- whay would you need slower speed on such high ISO anyhow? And how often one need that particular setting? Given G12 rotating Display, P7000 has bigger zoom, HIRES LCD, and many more features compared to G12. Matter of personal preferrence I guess...

Im looking for a camera to bring to gigs, cos they usually dont allow dslrs in. Most imoirtant for me is focusing in low light, and a responsive shutter- i need the pic taken when i press the button, not 10 seconds later. I was going to go with the canon, but it really sucks you cant zoom in video :/ thoughts ?

This is a Nikon tool and not a Canon TOY. If you want to do video, buy a video camera. In very low light you don't want to use too much high ISO and then you you can use longer exposures and using a tripod for night photography... The reason why there is so much buttons on the Nikon is to have similar layout like a DSLR on the Nikon range. The Canon doesn't have that feature though.. The next complaint might be there is no GPS on that, well geeks, it is a camera and not a GPS device....

Just bought one of these so I can carry something lighter than my D200. Great image quality from the P7000 and the ability to shoot RAW is awesome. The downsides are the camera's confusing and laggy menu interface. I am also having problems with the camera and my SB900 flash.

why in the world do you have your ISO jacked up for a long exposure? that would make awful noise anyways. high ISO with long exposure just sucks...

I am wanting a great low light pro quality snapper. I have mastered the manual set for the most part and needs something for all my pocketable needs. Between Sony nex series, Canon g12/s95, Nikon p700, LUmix lx5, Lumix gf1 etc.. Which gives best versatility, good battery life, great day and night exposures, etc.?

Is the shutter speed lock when on different iso level really a problem? As in your example on 3200, it stops on1/2 as the longest shutter, I doubt that you will need anything more slower when you use 3200 iso..

I just got an email from Nikon announcing their new camera the P7100, it comes with a tilty screen. Thinking of this the P7100 or the S9100 (9100 has SloMo which is more important to me than manual controls), I already have a D7000 which will always be my main, looking for a pocket camera I can take with me everywhere.

@pakistheshit - wow... OK. I am an avid NIKON USER. (I own two DSLRs and a P&S) BUT...Hands down, The G12 is a superior camera from what I have seen for the types of models that are in the same class. I have seen and used many, and it is my favorite P&S camera in the lower optical zoom spectrum. In the end, it will come down to this. WHAT DO YOU LIKE? I don't feel he is being biased at all. Have you seen all his reviews? They do hours of testing on these cameras..

I'd want the P7000, if you can't zoom in while filming & the photo quality is less accurate than the P7000, then the G12 means nothing with an articulating screen lol, that just cancels out for me. I'd much rather see myself better after I film, than in the moment lol.. because I look in the mirror everyday. I'm gonna go check out the newer versions, maybe though. Thanks, this helped so much!!!

I Just ordered the P7000 because of the stereo audio in movie mode as well as the ability to use an external mic. My primary need is for making youtube videos. Check my channel - there are over 500 vids there made with a Cannon A1100IS Power Shot. I did appreciate your review - but the stereo-audio did it for me. My guitar-vids are coming out crappy audio and that IS the reason I'm upgrading now.

The Nikon looks like a cheap rip off :s anyway I find the review was a good job, it was a fair one with all the pro's and con's of both camera's. It's just a fact that Canon has a very strong brand with their Pwoershot range, and Nikon not yet have found a good answer to it. Oh yeah, nice dog man!
