In this video I talk talk about Nikon D3500 in comparison with Nikon D3400 and the earlier cameras of the Nikon D3X00 series. I show Nikon D3500 and Nikon D3400 and highlight their main differences and similarities. I also compare Nikon D3500 with Nikon D3300, D3200, D3100 and D3000. My main conclusion is that Nikon D3500 is so similar to Niokn D3400 that these two are essentially the same camera and upgrading will not give you much. The main advantages of Nikon D3500 over D3400 is its more comfortable grip, smaller size and longer battery life. The video was used on top of a viewing tower using Fujifilm X-T30.

The D3000 is probably going through a renaissance of sorts because of the CCD sensor it has. CCD is the new film for the digital world, it has the same sensor as the D200 but slightly tweaked.

Another interesting video. My wife has a red Nikon D3400 with the kit lens and a 50-200mm VR zoom, I have 3 Fuji cameras. The D3400 seems to focus better than my Fuji's, but I found using Nikon cameras "boring". I changed to Fuji for the buttons and dials. Some things are difficult on the Nikon, using exposure compensation for example, you have to press a button and move a dial at the same time compared with my Fuji cameras which all have a dedicated exposure compensation dial. The D3400 is harder to use as a video camera than the Fujis. Both camera systems take good photographs, both take (in our opinion) good enough videos, but the sound is poor on all of our cameras, too much wind noise, so I think the D3300 with the microphone input would have been a better choice for my wife, but she wanted a brand new camera and the D3400 was the model on sale at the time.

Hi Kevin! Thanks for sharing. I really agree with what you are saying about Nikon vs. Fuji. Nikon is more about just pressing a button and getting a result. Fuji gives you more control over photography and lets you fine-tune what you're doing better. I have both Nikon and Fuji cameras but I find myself using mostly Fuji. I use Nikon primaily for macro photography these days. Just like you mentioned I also find that Nikon is quite good at accurate focusing. Kind regards!

My regular camera for getting the job done and producing great images is the D5600 which should become a future classic. I note that the ergonomics of older Nikons is far better eg D200,300, 700 etc . Top cameras when launched but great value nowadays!

Hi Cliff! Sure, the D5600 is a very nice camera. Which Nikon would you say feels the best in the hand? Cheers!

@@tom_photo Any of the older Nikons feel better than the modern ones. The dial layout and ease of adjustment just makes more sense than having to go through the menus. I love the FF D700 but it is quite clacky - images are wonderful though - bit like the Canon 5D classic in terms of look of the output.

I like my D3500 a lot, but I wish it had the fn button like my D40 has.

If you use it for photography, I think the best model in the series is the D3300.

Hello, do you happen to have image/picture comparison of these two cameras in the same spot and settings? I will be buying one of those two this week, and they have a difference of around 80USD in price in my region and for my use the sharper the better, I don't understand much about camera, but if you look at this video at around 2:18 the 2 photos are quite different, the D3400 seems to be losing a lot of details in highlight areas comparted to the D3500, could be the settings? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-On0ROmH2Z5g.html

Hi Udjani! Thank you for asking. Unfortunately I don't have the exact same picture taken with both cameras at the very same time. However these cameras have the same sensor and same everything; as far as picture quality (and sharpness) goes they are absolutely identical. The picture sharpness depends on the lens that you are using, the settings, focusing and whether you used a tripod or not. Either one of these cameras will give you the same result provided that they are in the same shape. When deciding which one to buy look at the shutter count, wear and tear, cleanliness, especially the shape of the sensor. If one of the cameras has always been used with one lens but the other one always changed lenses, the former is certainly a better buy. I have to decide soon which one of my two cameras to sell and right now I'm leaning towards keeping my D3400 because I'm more used to using it (I like the older button layout a tiny bit more). Kind regards!

hello , where to buy a camera 3300 or 3400? , will I lose my advantage if I buy 3500?

Hi Ary! Thanks for asking. There are probably used camera sites in your country where you can buy these cameras. You can also try Ebay. Even if you don't buy from there it will still give you an idea about the price. I once made a video on how to buy used cameras: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fcPVv6nefjA.html . Answering your question about D3500 or others in that series, I'd say that most people would probably go with the higher-numbered model (D3500). I argue in the video that the D3300 might be the most capable. My personal favorite is D3400 (probably because I've used it the longest). Which ever one of the mentioned cameras you're getting you're still a winner because they are all good. Choose based on condition, shutter count and price. Good luck to you!

Hi Tom, how would you rate these Nikons in comparison with the Fujis you have presented here in the past? And thank you for this video 😃👍✌️
@tom_photo
@tom_photo Год назад
Hi 13DCR! This is a great question and not an easy one. I think different people would answer this differently. These Nikons are really nice to use and they work very well. The answer also depends on the particular Fuji that is being compared with the Nikons. For example if you compare them with Fuji X-T30 then this is a bit different league. The X-T30 is just a more advanced camera. However I tend to be mostly a Fuji person and I'd put most of the Fujis always ahead. Fujis align with what I expect from photography. I like small size and hybrid also makes more sense to me than dSLR. There's this something extra that the Fuji has. And Fuji lenses are very hard to beat. For me Nikon products range from OK to wonderful but Fuji is almost always wonderful. But again, different people will have different take on this. Kind regards!

Although the question was not addressed to me, but maybe I can give you some + info. So I used to be a "Nikoner" and now I mostly use Fuji. However, I see the strengths and weaknesses of both systems. Fuji cameras require more attention, more skill. It's a bit more of a technical hobby, with Fuji while the Nikon is a kind of a workhorse. If you just want to take beautiful pictures with safety, I would still recommend the Nikon. And you have to remember what you use it for. The Fuji is very good for street, people or family photography, great for black and white and low light photography, but there are many other areas (product photography, landscape, sports or building photography) where the Nikon or Canon is preferable.

@@zsoltaudio Hi zsoltaudio! Thanks for adding these valid points. I'd agree that Fuji feels a bit like a stallion you have to train longer (read: practice more). Once you got it under control, though, it offers more and more very day. Overall this translates into greater "fun of use" if you're really into the cogs and wheels of photography.

@@zsoltaudio Thank you for this comprehensive answer! I was inclined to assume that the Fujis are the more modern cameras. However, I still have this feeling when shooting a dSLR 😃 I have Canon and Pentax in my arsenal but I should probably give Nikon a shot. Thanks again and all the best to you. BTW thank you Tom, I read your answer also 👍😃

In your opinion what would be considered a high shutter count? I'm looking at purchasing a pre owned D3500 that has 12,000.
@tom_photo
@tom_photo Год назад
Hi! Thank you for asking. An average D3500 is expected to last for about 100K clicks (shutter cycles). It could be more or it could be less but assuming 100K you still have 88% of unused capacity with the 12K that you're asking about. So, I'd say that this camera is still relatively young. Kind regards!
