Great video, the idea of showing two pictures and letting the viewer decide which one is the best is great. Thanks very much!

It's funny that this "shoot out" between the two cameras was actually more informative on both than any review I've seen on each individual one. Definitely helped me make a decision. Thanks. GREAT video :)

I'm writing this comment in March 2015. Out of all the comparison notes, specs, and videos that I have searched for the whole week, this was the best, most realistic review about the two camera functions. The portrait test you shown was the best! And after the test, to my surprise, I was able to favor out only one type of camera for all twelve pictures that you've shown. After that, this clearly gave my decision to go with that specific camera. After this review, I had to subscribe and would look forward to your next epic shootout. Thank you once again for this real-world type of review about cameras.

Thank you so much Michael. I just bought the nikon D5200 after seeing your video. I stumbled upon loads of other inconclusive videos which clouded my mind even more. I personally chose the Nikon because I personally think that the Nikon has an edge despite the 2nd best interface, like the live settings. I hope to learn a lot via your channel. I'll keep dropping in questions and I hope you help me with them. cheers.

This is everything I have been looking for! Thank you. So. Friggin. Much. I'm going to settle for the Canon T5i. I've been into photography for a number of years, but it has been off and on. I started in high school, but I never became completely superb at the art. So while I may be able to take photos a whole lot better than most simply because of my exposure to it, I don't feel comfortable labeling myself as anything more than a beginner (thank goodness for Photoshop!). Your 12 photo comparison game is genius. That's exactly what I needed (7 of the 12 photos I picked were Canon) and the ease of use of the Canon sealed the deal. The HDR and dynamic range of the Nikon made me a little hesitant to go with the Canon, but I figure that's nothing a little Photoshop can't fix. Thank you so much! I've been really needing to get a new camera. Found myself a model who really wants to work with me (she's gorgeous!) and I have my dad's wedding coming up soon and he wants me to be the photographer. Found your video just in time and it was so helpful. Thank you! Now all I need is some help on picking lenses.... that won't bankrupt me but work really well. Any recommendations?

Thank you very very much for this video. After seeing the Moire test at 17:10 and the colour and Dynamic Range at 18:16 it was absolutely clear that I should go with the Nikon D5200 which I did. So my first DSLR in life is Nikon D5200 thanks to this video from you :). I understand that T5i is easier to operate and learn, but I am willing to take that time to learn and get better pictures which is obviously delivered by the Nikon D5200. Thank you again.

I appreciate your comments about the feeling and experience one gets when shooting. I used the Canon T3 for a day with both lens that came in a kit. I and my friends were blown away. I took 300+ shots and have been hooked since then. I've spoken with other enthusiast that have several cameras (including these). I was almost steered towards the Fuji X30. From what I've seen and read, the X30 is an awesome camera. But, I really loved the way the Canon felt. I loved the interaction that I had with it. The T5 kit, I feel, is the one for me. Thanks again for settling my stomach.

Got my canon 700D (T5i) just a few weeks ago I looked at the D5200 as well. As a beginner I think I made the right choice, and yes the touch screen makes it easy and fun to use. Lets be honest here, this is entry level photography and because of ease of use, the 700d wins hands down. If you want professional qualities pay 5 times the price. Anyways all, happy snapping.

I realise this video is several years old, but it's the Canon T5i for me evertime, it intuitive to use, faster to use with that great touch screen, and better layed out menus, yes I own a T5i, just bought it infact (2020), it's rock solid. I didn't realise the centre focussing spot behaves differently (T5i) with fixed focal length lenses. Great video by the way. Many thanks.

Hey Michael, thanks a lot for your video! I am confused because when I did the portrait test with the paper and numbers, the Canon was definitely my favourite (a lot better pictures). But then at the end, you said that the Nikon takes better pictures with its HDR and better dynamic range. After doing your portait test, I think the opposite is true. Now my question is: Why is there such a difference in our both opinions? And how important is the portait test on the overall decision between these two? Thanks for your answer in advance! On all reviews on the internet, i saw d5200 as the better camera. Comparing their resources technically one by one nikon d5200 wins again. I'm decided to buy the nikon. But in the comparision game between two brands, ALL my answers were to CANON T5i. I cannot understand. Can the canon t5i get more details than a camera that is slighty technically superior (d5200)?
@neurom4nc3r

The D5200 is very blurred, it cannot get the body details (on the model skin for example)... :((

Same here! I don't know what to buy!
@neurom4nc3r
@neurom4nc3r 9 лет назад
JennaIceLPS well, today I've finally ordered the D5200 also because it is cheapest than t5i. I believe that the t5i don't have a perfect capacity to get some color details, this way, the contrast seems to be better at first glance. In the case of d5200, you don't loss these visual "informations" (details) and can control the light at your own taste using a post production software. And about the "blurred" skin in the comparsion game, I really don't have a explanation. Maybe a nikon characteristic?
@neurom4nc3r
@neurom4nc3r 9 лет назад
I would appreciate if a photography professional tell us something about this case. I used to take pictures using potatoes.
@CrystalStackhouse
@CrystalStackhouse 9 лет назад
+neurom4nc3r Agreed. You defiantly can control the cameras settings in manual mode. Also, the HDR is fantastic. I think photoshop can defiantly fix up any quirks. D5200 is more for your money and allows for more room to grow as a photographer. It will help you adjust from taking photos with potatoes to pro overtime. Good choice!

Thank you very much for your excelent videos. I'm a newbie (I'll have to learn a lot indeed...) and spent hours assisting inumerous videos to decide if I should go for the T5i or the D5200/5300 (which is the level within my budget restrictions). But only the clear and didactic structure as well as true objectiveness of YOUR videos helped me to really make the decision BASED ON INFORMATION. I decided for the T5i due to... 1) menu control that seems far more intuitive (sooooooo important for a beginner!) and practical than the D5200/5300... 2) direct visualization in the live display of change of shooting parameters... 3) from the 12 samples of your blind test, my individual visual preference scored 9 in favour of the T5i shots... OMG, there are so many review videos out there where the only concern of the guys seems to be how cool they are.... they should all take lessons with you. Thank you very much again and a Happy 2016.

By far the best comparison video I've seen on two cameras to day. I'm a new Canon T5i user and I agree that your Nikon D5200 shots do come out better. That being said, when I took the preference test without knowing which was which, believe it or not, I chose the T5i (8 for Canon). Technically, and I'm saying this as a pure novice, the Nikon hits all the marks quality-wise, but I get this sense of reality from the Canon when I look at it's final results. Without putting the two identical shots next to each other, who'd know which was objectively better? Professionals, that's who. Those faults that get picked out aren't noticeable to the non-photographer and as one learns to work with each particular idiosyncrasy of either camera, those faults can be mitigated. When I've seen matched settings comparison shots posted next to each other, I'd wonder if either camera deviated from that identical setting, could it be dialed-in to closer match it's competitor? In other words, do settings man more than the final products? You're 101% right about the frustration of a new shooter, but I'm going to plow through it. I'm seeing incremental improvements as I gain more courage with my settings. These days, you need a degree to operate a DSLR, but the image quality is well worth it in my book. Before I upgrade from my T5i up to 80D range (I intend to do mostly video work in natural settings like your opening scenes), I'm going to rent a Nikon of equal rating and try that out and see how I like it for sure, but as of now, even the lowly T5i is producing some wicked work when used by someone who knows how to extract the best out of it. Thanks for a great video and I LOVE the opening shots BTW.

Just one more thing I'd like to add regarding the review; You took the time to consider that you were talking to novices. Far too many camera reviews on entry-level DSLR's go into specs and attributes that novices don't understand. You spoke "English" to me, not "Tech" and that was a big help in helping me understand your points. Again, thanks!

Which would u recommend for video shooting for youtube, i love the canon t5i auto focus on the touch screen but it worries me as in "what if it doesn't respond, or breaks somehow"; when i took ur test it said it was a go for the canon also. I shoot video more then photo's but i love photography to, so I'm confused over this; I'm not a beginner but I'm not a pro ether so i would love your recommendation. Currently right now I use a Nikon D5100.

neek247 If you're using a Nikon, you can benefit from buying another Nikon, because you can keep the batteries and accessories, which you can save a lot of money on. Personally I'm about to buy a Nikon D5200 for filming, because I don't really care about the Canon's feature of touch screen auto focus. Nikon's video I find is perfect for me and nothing worse than any Canon's with the same price.

***** By using Manual Focus... As far as I know, there's no way to silence auto focus in-camera. All I know is, (and meanwhile I bought the D5200 I was talking about in my comment 1 month ago) the D5200 18-55mm 3.5 -5.6 VR has a silent wave motor, which means auto focussing makes less noise than lenses that don't have this feature. However I just tested after reading your question, and even with Rode Videomic Pro external mic you'll hear it. Again I dont have the problem when using manual focus. All I can tell you is in post production you should be able to remove some noise in Audacity (search for Audacity sound removing, or something) but it isn't perfect. I could help you more when you'd tell me why exactly you're using Auto Focus and what for...
@tmfilmproductionshd7470
@tmfilmproductionshd7470 10 лет назад
***** Yeah, with an external mic on the camera itself, you'll hear it. May be a Lavallier mic is good. You won't need the in-camera sound, you just clip on the mic on your clothes. Not sure if a Nikon D5200 is the camera for you, if you only plan to use it for beauty videos, but it's up to you of course. Something you could need is a tilt screen, which this camera has. That way you can put the camera on a tripod of some sorts, tilt the screen towards you and focus manually. You'll always see what the camera sees that way. Anyway, I think the D5200 has a lot of features that you don't need for only youtube video making at home. You don't want to waste a lot of money on a camera with features you're not going to use. I can advice you just to pick the camera that meets your requirements and you won't regret your new camera. But again, it's up to you ;)
@tmfilmproductionshd7470

***** There's not much I can tell you about the Canon DSLR's. Only thing I've heard is that the T4i is pretty much the same as the T5i, and the canon lenses sometimes have STM, (Silent Motor or something) which is more silent autofocus than normal. I can tell you the D5200 is a great versatile camera that can make great videos and nice pictures too, for both I use the standard kit lens. This video convinced me I liked the D5200 more. (Also got 24 mp, nice for upscaling the images, canon got 18mp,). As I told you before, manual focussing works fine, and especially with a rotating screen. I'm going to recommend you do your own research, that way you'll find the camera you need and you will be happy with it. I'm sure you can figure out what camera is the right one for you by watching videos like these. Extra tip; if you already have canon/nikon camera's, you can benefit from buying a camera from the same brand, because often you don't have to buy new batteries etc.

I am a filmmaker and I have used a lot of cameras,Both from nikon and canon.For those people who want to be a filmmaker,Let me help you in getting the best camera for video,films etc. The reason why many people even in the comment section below support canon for video is due to the fact that nikon improved only a few years ago.Nikon cameras were used to take sharper pictures while canon started investing on videos.And that's the time when most of the filmmakers and people chose canon for video.But after a few years Nikon also started getting into the video market by bringing new features.Since Canon was already being used for filmmaking due to nikon's late entry,Filmmakers still preferred it instead of trying out nikon.As a result canon became the industry default.But nowadays the scene has changed if you do a video test with a nikon camera with its canon equivalent you will notice that the nikon is slightly better in perfomance ,A huge performance difference could be scene in low light shots.The nikon is simply better in low light.So if you are going to make horror films or thrillers,which are mostly set in the dark, Nikon is surely the best.One thing that canon is better is its lenses, Canon supports a wide variety of lenses while the nikon has less. But that doesn't stop Nikons performance.But then there is SONY CAMERAs which also shows great perfomance.Now I prefer different cameras in different situations.So the End of the story is that filmmaking is not about the camera.A good team is what makes the shots more beautiful.You can give all the expensive equipments to a team of beginners and you can give all the cheap equipments to a team of Experienced Filmmakers,Now ask them to make a short film and the result is most likely to be that the film from the experienced filmmakers with cheap equipments is going to be better than the other.So I conclude that its not about the camera. It doesn't really matter if you have a canon,Nikon,Panasonic or Sony or Even Blackmagic,its you which matters

I started with Nikon D3100 in 2013, now I own a Canon 700D, Canon is easy and fast to use, the lenses of Canon are much better and quieter than Nikon, I am pretty sure you would not like the sound of a focusing lense in your videos. I am subscribing because I like your reviews, you rock, you give the necessarily needed info!

Thank you for the comparison test. To be honest I don't think it was completely unbiased, but then neither is my final choice. I'm going with canon, not only because of it's ease of use and live preview, I don't think the differences were so great that they couldn't be fixed with settings and different lenses. This will be my very first DSLR camera and I love canon, I still have my Canon powershot IS from ten years ago, still going strong. Besides that, it's easier to fix a still picture than a video. Thanks again for the comparison test, it was a big help because there are so many cameras available and choosing the right one can be a real chore.

I was totally biased to the nikon d5200 but the portrait shootout turned everything upside down for me, 8 out of 12 for Canon, specially No. 3, 4 and 8 were outstanding from canon. The funny part is that after i saw the end result, just in order to convince and calm down myself i went back through the 12 pair of photos again and again to change some of my choices to level the score in favor of the nikon but that couldn't work. even 2 out of the 4 i chose nikon were 50-50 for both cameras. Thank you for the great review, you helped me the take the right choice , now its time to get the T5i

Thank you so much for this review. It really did help me pick the T5i camera as the one that i wanted. I have small children that just as you said never sit still. This will also be my first DSLR. I started taking photos on a point and shoot and then upgraded to a superzoom bridge camera. Before i bought my superzoom i had a second hand yashica SLR film camera with 2 lenses (standard kit type lens and a medium telephoto lens) and everything was manual on it, focus, aperture, the lot. I had hoped I could learn everything I needed to about iso, shutter speed and aperture but before I could understand it all the body suffered from light leakage so i had to part with it. Until now the dslr had always been the dream but just out of my budget until now. Thank you for your part in helping me choose the right camera and get back into photography. keep up the good work!
