The D7200 is a purpose built camera and far from lack-luster. Its DX format is desired by wildlife photographers. The frame rate of 6 - 7 FPS is acceptable. It handles hi ISO exceptionally well and has an adequate buffer. It's certainly not a 'preferred' landscape or astral camera due to the DX format so it wasn't intended to be a one but is capable of doing so nicely. It's also $1000 cheaper than the newer and faster D500. With the new features, it's a 7D killer.

That shot starting around 4:36 is FANTASTIC! The branch shadows on Chris's face are hilarious! I did not notice them at all the first time through last March. I just re-viewed the review to remind myself why I'm not buying this camera and was noticing some very funny shooting going on. By the time I hit the 5 minute mark I was laughing out loud. Great fun Jordan.

TCS, you guys are on a roll! The intro scene looks stunning, I'm talking Hollywood class stunning! You've become my absolute favorite now, topping DRtv. Btw, is our Pentax KS2 review coming? Highly interested on your take on the KS2, especially since you skipped the KS1. Now about the 7200, when I hear 'compromising ruggedness' as the excuse for excluding the articulated screen, it irritates me real bad! lol The target group of this camera is very less likely to toss them around. So if such a valuable addition is skipped for ALL the rest of Us because a small subset of people in an even smaller subset of usage scenario *may 'potentially'* break it loose is like saying we shouldn't make buildings more than 2 stories high because an extremely small percentage may jump off and commit suicide! Sounds like a cheap logic to me. 60D has had flippy screen since 2010 and broken screens are not even in the top 5 list of failure causes! So I don't understand why Nikon, after adding even more useful movie features on this 7200, still decided against that flippy screen the third time! I've been waiting for it since D7000.
@TheCameraStoreTV
@TheCameraStoreTV 9 лет назад
zeebazu I agree completely! This also happened with the Canon EOS 7D MK2. No flip screen and all the sales reps quote is the whole ruggedness speech. Our friend and repeat TCS video guest Mike Drew is a journalist who does horrible things to his cameras on a daily basis. He has long used the Canon 60D and 70D both with flip screens and yet they've survived after hundreds of thousands of frames. Both his cameras look like they've been left outside for years and used as wheel chocks to keep cars from rolling. I've personally in my twelve years at the store never seen a flip screen break because of the articulation even at the point and shoot level. We really appreciate you watching and supporting us.Chris @ TCS TV

Great video again guys thanks. To defend Nikon a bit here, I think the D7200 is just a mid-life upgrade to maintain market position. The bar was set pretty high with the D7100. You can do sports with these cameras, but if you must have 10fps then Canon is the choice. 4k and touchscreen etc. would also have been cool - but another thing that annoys me is when people don't compare like for like with pricing in mind. A quick search online shows that a new D7200 costs around 30% less than the Canon 7DMkII - which also doesn't have those features, it just shoots quicker (and at the cost of lower optimal IQ). The D7xxx line remain in my opinion the best VALUE crop DSLRs on the market, especially when you take into account the mature system of lenses available. Nikon are trying to maximise profits by using the same body chassis / basic design for as long as possible (hence no redesigned grip etc.), and I don't see any problem in this. Personally I'm not even sure how committed Nikon is to the DX format going forward. If I were them I'd concentrate on my FX system where 90% of the best glass is, and look at a mirrorless alternative for those wanting smaller/lighter/cheaper/high fps - a DX body versus an FX body makes hardly any difference at all in size or weight if you're packing a pro zoom on it. This may be another reason why it is illogical for them to completely redesign the D7xxx series now. By the time the D7300 is due, it's not impossible that this market segment will be taken over by mirrorless bodies. The only remaining stumbling blocks really are AF, EVF and battery life.

First you say the improved buffer is "a huge improvement and a welcome addition." "(Low light focusing)... is a great improvement." Then, at the end you tell us "...we don't have a lot of substantial improvements..." there is no reason whatsoever to upgrade from the D7100 to the D7200.? No reason whatsoever....??? I am upgrading to this camera for the larger buffer and better low light focusing and those are very good reasons to upgrade. Most upgrades to a camera line are incremental. That's just a fact of life. It's impossible to have revolutionary changes every time, especially with modern cameras being replaced every couple of years.

I agree with this, I'm looking to buy the D7200 upgrading from a D3300 and the changes are huge. Not every update can have substancial changes and improvements, especially if the older model was good, it seems to me like they fixed some of the D7100's issues and added the useful feature of Wi-Fi.

The story about the Nikon D7200 is a simple one. It's a story about missed opportunities. Nikon took a huge step back in comparison to the spec-list of the D750. The D7200 is the top of the line DX camera, so why Nikon doesn't go further? It wouldn't be a competitor to the D750. Someone who is willing to go full frame, will go full frame. Someone who needs the crop-factor for his work/hobby, will go DX. There is absolutely no reason to get rid off some of the D750 specs, even though it already got the focussing system for example. And to those who complain about tilt screens ... come on ... other companies build cameras with tilt screens for years and years. I never heard complaints that those fall apart if you just look at them. But ... if you want a fast AF in Live View ... Canon and Nikon for example are far away from other companies. After all this years I just can't understand why Canikon are that far behind. Even the old Sony A350 is faster in Live View AF then actual Canikons. Actually I love my D750, it's a great package in my oppinion, but in some terms it is simply outperformed by my Sony A6000 ... and that bothers me a lot!!!! I'm sorry for my grammar, but I'm not a native speaker.

Some one reviewing the 300PF lens noticed that it's an "E" lens instead of a "G" lens and now has an electronic aperture like canon lenses and apparently "E" lenses will give you aperture changes in live view on cameras like the D7200 as a result. I found that interesting.

I agree with Chris regarding not upgrading from the D7100 to the D7200 but if you have a D5100 or one of the 3000 or 5000 series then upgrade. You can find refurbish D7200 at a good price or for a better lower price you can find refurbished or used D7100's out there.
@MacPro8CoreMan

Personally this is the next camera I am going to buy to replace my D300s. I do a ton of nature and wildlife and this is excellent for that. Given the choice between the D7100 for $950.00 or the new D7200 $1159.00 this is a no brainer. In my situation the improvements are worth way more than $200.00. No Anti-Aliasing Filter, a huge improvement in sharpness! Massive Buffer Improvement, especially for wildlife. Much better low light capabilities. Also important for what I do. Expeed 4 and great a huge improvement in Focussing, and more. 60 FPS in video, which is likely to be used a lot. I'm not saying you should upgrade from D7100, but if you are in the market for a high end DX as an upgrade for the D7000 and everything below or older; I say go for it!

Nikon's recent focus on adding features like wifi, NFC and tilt screens to recent models is geared more towards expanding the customer base than enticing current owners to upgrade. It's not megapixels, high ISO performance, frame rate or (gaack!) 4K that's stopping smart phone photogs from buying dedicated cameras. It's the lack of user-friendly features. The day every Nikon camera features a touch screen, wifi and built-in apps allowing the camera to mesh seemlessly with workflow is the day Nikon will put Canon in their rearview. Especially if Canon is still distracted by megapixels wars.
@jimarmstrong2630
@jimarmstrong2630 9 лет назад
I agree, seamless integration and simplicity, which would include upgraded software on board, is the next frontier. The sensors have gone way beyond what even most professionals would ever need.
@Pepingco
@Pepingco 9 лет назад
But to say that is a bit of a cop out - Nikon don't make sensors anymore and have basically made the same camera with useless improvements. They had lots of time to come up with a better buffer and... well that's it... You have to remember, Nikon had over a year to add a phone and a better buffer because Sony is now the heart of Nikon's image. They improved nothing and made a more expensive D7100... Im gonna have to wait for the 7300 or just wait for a Full frame Nikon camera that doesn't have quality control issues.
@BillFerris
@BillFerris 9 лет назад
Pepingco I agree that Nikon has done little, if anything, to make the D7200 an enticing upgrade from the D7100. I wouldn't argue that point with you or Chris. My point is that the user interface upgrades Nikon has implemented with recent releases may reflect a strategy of trying to expand customer base. The real problem Nikon, Canon, Sony, etc. have been facing in recent years is a shrinking customer base. Most photographers are perfectly happy to use their smartphone as their primary camera. Image quality is good enough and, more important, user interface is vastly superior. Simply put, the smartphone is easier and more fun to use. Nikon appears to be betting that making their cameras easier and more fun to use will do more to attract new customers than a higher burst rate...or other improved specs. If that is their strategy, I would say the tepid improvements Nikon has made don't go nearly far enough. Touchscreen is critical and none of Nikon's prosumer or pro bodies offers this. Even more important, is the addition of on-board apps that seemlessly integrate the camera with workflow. Do you think a wedding photographer would like an app that automatically exports select images to the cloud where a wifi projector can download them for display during the reception dinner? This is the kind of functionality I believe Nikon should be focusing on. Modern cameras offer amazing image quality, high ISO performance, etc. What Nikon and Canon don't (yet) offer are user interface and functionality features allowing photographers to take full advantage of the digitally integrated world in which we live. Whoever gets there first will have a decided advantage over the other.
@Pepingco
@Pepingco 9 лет назад
Bill Ferris I agree, but I own a Canon 6D so at weddings, all my photos stream right to my laptop... Everyone made fun of me for getting the 6D and what a waste wifi was. Those people bought D600 cameras... and we all know no one wants those cameras anymore. So the 6D won that battle. I do want to see those things like connectivity come up, but I don't see professionals use them anytime soon. You have to convince a professional to change part of their workflow. That being said, if new people pick up the new wifi/gps/nfc/wireless cameras it would be interesting, but I think the technology isn't fast enough and not kind on battery as of yet... What I highly do not agree with Nikon with these upgrades is that their RAW files for a 24MP sensor are still huge and hard to transfer wirelessly. Their wifi is still unreliable during heavy shooting (like a prom) and the battery life is atrocious when I used to use the wifi dongle for their D3XXX line. If Nikon wants to take their cameras this way, it better be reliable... Even Canon systems aren't reliable but the file transfer is better, file sizes in RAW are manageable, and the tether software is free. So I agree, cameras should go that way, but these companies need to fix problems that already exist in the camera lineup before they start putting in new tech that isn't great already. I will ventually go back to Nikon once the FPS, Buffer, ergonomics, touch screen and smaller RAW files are implemented. So Im crossing my fingers there. Thanks for the info and your views on this. Cool to read.
@BillFerris
@BillFerris 9 лет назад
Pepingco thank you for sharing your views. I would imagine the real world issues you experience are similar those encountered by other photographers who, like you, use cameras for work on a daily basis. Let's hope the camera companies are listening and working hard to develop bodies that integrate better with today's workflow.

The Camera Store Chris, I have a few specific questions, I hope you can oblige. 1) Have Nikon altered the ergonomics at all, ala the Nikon D750? This is something I have heard. Having tried the D90, D7000, D7100, D700, D750, and D810, my favourites are the D750 and D90 due to the depths of their grip, though "some ergonomic changes would be nice" seems to vaguely indicate not. 2) Can the video "record" button now be re-programmed when in Stills mode, to be set to something like ISO control (like the D750)? and 3), Does the 7200 import the new "group AF" option? Sidenote: I don't actually like the color profile of this video from the Sony; maybe it's the grading, but there seems to be a magenta cast to the shadows, as if the ISO had been pushed too high. Thanks!

The most substantial one would be that the camera drops down to 5 fps at full resolution, full quality RAW. Another one would be the mode dial - I haven't played with a real D7200, but from what I've seen, the dial is not unlockable. The better option in my opinion would be to have it like a pen - click to lock, click to unlock; moreover, I don't really see the need for locking - I've never had the dial on my D7000 accidentally change. One more thing - that silly "Effects" position on the dial could be elsewhere; I understand that this camera needs to be accessible to less experienced people, but Hell, Nikon, you shouldn't have put this just between M and U1/U2 - I very ofthen have on my D7000 two or three sets of different settings - one in A/M and another one or two in U1/U2 - and another position on the dial is out of place there.

No comments on the added two stops of high ISO? Was hoping that would be covered as I shoot a lot of night landscapes with the D7100 that it doesn't handle well, need to decide if it's this or the move to fullframe. Thinking fullframe based on the comments below..

Liked the video but I really wanted more info on the buffer performance. I am soon to purchase a camera and I need a responsive buffer. Cameras in mind are The d5500, d7200, 70d and the d610

Regarding the the -4.1EV shot, (f/2 at 1/125s and ISO 6400 = +3Ev) So your shot doesn't make sense unless you raised the shadows by 5 or 6 stops?

i love this video. I think Levi Holwell do a brilliant job and i love the grading. It's even better than the FS7 color.

Levi did a brilliant job shooting this episode! As far as my grade, the Sony A7S shoots SLog2, which I'm very familiar with after shooting the FS700 for two years. Our FS7 grades will keep improving as I come to grips with SLog 3. Jordan @ TCSTV

I didn't like the colour grading in this video. It looks a little unnatural and kind of flat in parts.

Is it me or do I see the video footage from both this D7200 and the D5500 being a little softer than the D3300's?

Seeing as you mentioned it, did you guys ever consider reviewing the Sony A77ii? Also seeing how some people seemed to have jumped ship in the DPR forums because of the tiny buffer on the D7100, i think the improved buffer with the D7200 would be reason enough for some to upgrade....

Put a WU-1a adapter and a 90mb write SD Card in the D7100 and there is nearly only the new expeed4 prozessor left for the D7200. That means for the next 2 years there is no point of selling my D7100, and I´m still loving her.

I see you used ISO 800 with very little or no noise. Unless you removed some of the noise before adding to the video or removed noise from the video in video edit. I find that impressive. I might be a few days away from buying the 7200 for me it would be a nice upgrade from the 5100 I have a hard time getting the 5100 to focus in conditions like in your office so that for me is a bonus. Oh I like how you hide you model I think a man in the woods I spotted him there. Thanks for this review

Hi Admin! Could you please suggest me latest lens for this camera (D7200) that will cover wider area? For example, I want to take a photo of a meeting held in a small room and I wanted to get all the participants in the photo. Lets say the normal lens we get with camera isn't sufficient to cover all the people in the room. I would be very grateful if you could kindly suggest me one. Please!

Newbie question here.....looked like you were using relatively high ISOs (400, 800) for those outdoor shots in bright sunlight. I would think you'd be in the 100/200 range, no?

TheCameraStoreTV will you be covering the Canon EOS M3? And around when? (release is set for late April) I'm very interested since it looks to be Canon's first good mirrorless camera. The EF-M mount has some great optics (albeit few), so it would be great to have a good camera to pair them with.

I've been waiting for the D7200 for some time, as I've shot with the D7100 and enjoyed the experience, but lack of changing aperture in live view is a non-starter and frankly a major misstep by Nikon, in my opinion; such a decision along with the 60p in 1.3x crop mode is a dismissal of my needs as a videographer who also does photography.

@JDennisThomas

Paolo Cachola Nikon has never put aperture control in this level of camera. NEVER. You need to move up to a pro camera. It's just that simple.
@agoniavr
@agoniavr 9 лет назад
J. Dennis Thomas Or they could just add such a stupid thing to implement and make everyone happy? Now THAT'S simple, not your suggestion. Not everyone needs pro bodies and what defines a pro body should be the quality and other stuff, not software limitations that are really easy to add. That's why most consumers, hobbyst and semi-pro's(heck, even pros!) are moving to Sony or other mirrorless systems: because they get the job done and have plenty of features, coming really cheap. I know they're a company and their purpose is to make money but seriously, a non-pro will never jump from this 1,000$ camera to a 2,000$ D810 just for the live view aperture control or some minor stuff like that...meanwhile, you can do that on a 500$ Sony and you have way more control over everything.

I am trying to decide if I would want to make the change from a D7000 to the D7200. I know you don't recommend upgrading if someone has the D7100, but how about in my case? Are there enough differences between the D7000 and the D7200 to merit an upgrade? Thanks in advance!
