I own the D850 and absolutely love it. One of the features I like best is the histogram in live view so you can nail exposure every time by being able to dial in the histogram in real time before you take the shot. Have not seen this in any of the books but found it on RU-vid. Greatest camera I’ve ever owned and I’ve been doing this for over 50 years.

I have owned almost all of the 3000 and 5000 series, the D90, D200, D300, D7100 and D7200, the D500, I have had the D810 for over a year and just got the D850. I went out and shot my first photo's the day I got it, loaded them on the computer and I thought my wife was going to slap me if I said WOW just one more time. I think I finally found the only camera I will ever need. LOL! I will also keep the D810, it's a great camera. Great video Tim!

Hi i own a D850 I'm amazed just how good it really is. . Ive had it 8 month now and well worth the money . I had a 7500 before which i use now and again and it has a 50mm lens on it . Being able to crop in on the d850 is really good without loosing picture quality compared to my d7500.

Tim, Great review, please keep up the excellent work! I bought one of the first 850s in Western Canada and now have about 90,000 frames through it. After 30 professional years and experience with everything from Sinar 4x5 to Nikon Z7, I consider the D850 to be the best camera i've ever used!

I have my D850 on order and am eagerly awaiting delivery. I chose it because I have f-mount glass already and virtually every review I could find rates it as an incredible camera. I needed to upgrade from my D5500 which I use primarily for bird photography. I do very little video or I would have considered one of the mirrorless models but that would require new glass. I watched several RU-vid videos with the D850 matched to a Sigma 150-600 C and they were all very positive. Since I already have this lens, and considering all the features of this camera, choosing the D850 seemed like a no brainer. I am very excited to get it in my hands to start playing. Videos like yours were what helped my make my decision. Thank you.

Tim...thanks for the great review. I've had my D850 for almost a year now and love it. I'm not a professional but have learned so much over the past year to become a better armature and my D850 with a few good lenses has helped me produce better pictures overall. Still have a lot to learn...subscribed today.

UPDATE for 2024: I am STILL using the Nikon D850 as my main camera. There is nothing else on the market yet that beats this camera. I am not a fan of the Z series mirrorless cameras because their battery life is 1/3 that of the D850. If you buy the D850 in 2024 you will not be disappointed. I love this camera!! Is there another camera you would like to see me compare the Nikon D850 with? Comment below...

You just answered my question. Thanks. Landscapes are my now my passion . Sold my D810 a couple years back and picked up a Z6 Ok and can do nice stuff but not a d810 picture wise. was going to get the Z7 but I just don't see the same type of pics I like with my eye as the D series cameras I don't think Im going backwards I simply want the best images possible in the Nikon arena

I own the D850 & was also stunned by the incredible dynamic range. I thought I would have to mount a flash to get proper light on foreground subjects with backlight. Not a problem with the D850. I love that you can use a CF Type B card in the XQD slot. Seems a little faster. The D850 is Nikon’s crown jewel of DSLRs.

I am using the D850 for 1 year. Hands down this is the best camera I have used for portraits, landscapes and what not! I recently purchased a Z6 II and the pictures are almost in par with the D850 but the D850 always has much more to offer.

Thanks for the video! The D850 is the third DSLR camera I have owned. As an avid amateur the amount of technology packed into this camera is a little daunting but it takes absolute stunning photos. I totally agree with your synopsis and loved your photos you posted on the video. I do not do a lot of videography but when I have focusing has been an issue. My primary subjects have been my grandchildren and my golden retriever and they very rarely sit still lol! Thanks for the review! I purchased an offbrand battery pack to increase the shots per second because I do a lot of wildlife photography. One of the unexpected benefits has been battery life. When I was using the internal batteries I was leapfrogging them quite often as the camera tended to chew through batteries. I still charge them and bring them on shoots but I have not ran the battery pack dead once. I got it though B & H. It also allows me to charge it while on the camera.

Good review Tim. Ironically, I just experienced a sand storm at Death Valley too- Mesquite Dunes. From many miles away we could see the dust cloud. It calmed down and I was able to get some good sunset shots- also sunrise the next day was magical. I saw your other video so I ventured in further to that large ridge area. I haven't edited yet but I think I got some good shots. Coming from a D5500 should I go D850 or jump right into mirrorless- what do you recommend? Within reason, money is not an issue. I am not a pro either. Mostly shoot landscapes like you- love your lightening pic!

As an amateur photographer I was sceptical about spending the sort of money associated with this camera, but i'm so glad I did. The dynamic range has been mind blowing for me. It means I rarely have to use HDR as I can extract so much detail from photos in post editing. I've only had a few opportunities to get out and use it but it has definitely inspired me to get out more and take more photographs.

Hi Tim, I used Nikon but moved to Canon for a 1DX MKII. I now regret that because I loved the ease with which my Nikons worked and gave me amazing skin tones and awesome shots. I was researching the new Nikon D850 when I came across your video. I think your landscape shots are out of this world - congratulations on that. I used to take a lot of portraits and some weddings. Now I mostly design websites. I'm considering buying the Nikon D850. Once a photographer, always a photographer. I say this because even when I use my iPhone you can see I'm a photographer from the results. It's just built-in into my way of shooting. I enjoyed your review. Spot-on.

I've currently had my Nikon D750 for 3+ years, and have been happy with my results, and my question would be, would the D850 honestly give me any better images than I currently get? Good glass is essential, and possibly why some of my images aren't dead on is that I use the 28-300mm for many of my shots 90% of the time. I do have the 70-200 F/2.8 and 16-35 F/4 but love the versatility of my longer 28-300 lens. I have a Manfrotto tripod, and two heads, one ball head and a gimbal, and the biggest hinderance to my photography generally is post processing, as I'm all thumbs in Lightroom! I've looked at moving up to the D850, and I realize there are different reasons for many people, but after doing some night photography, the lit back buttons would have been super helpful. I know there are a few other helpful aspects of the D850, but is it worth putting out another $2000. plus, to get it? Just starting on Tim's Photography Webclass....so I'm hoping for miracles....or at least, progress in getting 'quality' images compared to 1 in a 1000 as it is now.

Excellent video! Curios if you needed to bracket your photos for the arch print or the lake with snow or if the dynamic range without bracketing is good enough for those shots or if you used an ND filter or even need one for those shots?

Hey I am a proud owner of Nikon D850 and I was here just to check your reviews about it and believe you are 100% right about everything I would like to tell those who are looking forward to buy a camera that this is a camera to go for if you are into photography I use this camera only for videography and I do not use the the focus system in this camera because it has focus peaking and it works flawless. I am told by many videographers that why did you go for this camera if you are into videography but I made this decision because I am in love with Nikon and its just the Best DSLR in the world and I am not sure that there will be anymore DSLR cameras because every camera companies are moving towards mirror-less race and D850 might be the LAST DSLR produced by the Nikon.

Some great shots there Tim, thanks for the review. I just sold my D810 thinking it's time to upgrade after 3½ years. I am split between 5DsR, A7R3 and D850. None is perfect, with Canon strengths being sharpness, resolution and color science, Nikon strengths being iso 64 and the clarity and cleanness and 3D-ness of images there, and focus-peaking, and the Sony strengths being 4k video, focus peaking, and IBIS as I often find subjects for intimate landscape that are too tricky to set up a tripod on, or I'm just too lazy but still would like a sharp shot, and IBIS for intended small prints of such subjects would be great to help guarantee sharp images. One of the worst things for me about the D810 was blown highlights in blue skies (highlights too hot like their RAW processing added excess contrast, where Canon and SOny retained much more natural tonally rich skies), and the unnaturally cooler blue in D810 skies, where they lacked sufficient red content that was there to the naked eye. With the D850, do you find overly hot blue sky highlights and a red-lean, overly cool color palette? I liked a lot of things about the D810 but these blue sky weaknesses are a big negative for me and would make me look at Sony if they persist in the D850. thanks, Jim

Glad you caught the FMJ reference :-) I had the D810 previously (I bought it the day after I killed my D800 with the ocean wave) and it is a great camera. The image quality of the D810 is so good and there is not a massive difference between it and the D850's images in my opinion. So maybe wait for a screaming deal on a D850.

@@TimShieldsPhotography When a d860 comes out, are we going to rubbish and bin the d850? Its features will always be there and as awesome in 5 years as they are today or were yesterday...a camera is just a tool. Change it when it has been well used and has served its purpose (like your drenched and damaged D800). A d810 is "still" excellent as was on its launch day. I have had a d60 (still have it), the D2xs, D300s, Fuji x100s, Olympus E3 and OMD5. Now am shooting with combo of Df + D800 (some of those bodies I still have). When I look at the pics taken with those tools i love them all. I still regret selling my d300s, I miss it (looking at the d500). All in all, if one's job is pro photographer, he may justify such investment. But if one buys just to keep up with tech, he might be running a lost race... So may people enjoy what they have and use it to the full and only upgrade when it has been truly used and served its purpose.

Hi Tim, great review. I purchased this camera INSTEAD of the Nikon Z6 or 7 because of ALL the negatives folks have written about with the Z bodies. I also have a decent stable of F mount lenses I wanted to be able to continue to use. The Zs turned me off with their very short battery lives, the lack of a battery/vertical grip and all of the other issues other reviewers have written about. I've never been an early adopter of new technology, so for me, staying with the D850 and the SLR technology was something I embraced. Nikon needs to improve their Z bodies and as I write this, even with the recent announcement of the Z6II and Z7II, I am NOT impressed enough to convert.

Nice review, I'll watch more of your vids/reviews. I preordered and received my first D850 straight away, early on. I was somewhat pleased but as a D5 and D810 user I was not overwhelmed as most were. I sold it to a wedding photog who was anxious to own. Last November I bought yet another D850, and seriously, this is an improved camera. I suggest Nikon made running improvements as it was produced and they received information from users. Fantastic camera! Like you I forget to use the tilting live view-

I own a D850 and simply love it. Mostly I can agree with you. Although, didn't mind that there is an option for SD card. Since SDs prices have really plummeted recently, I can cheaply have like 1TB or more amount of cards. Yep, transfer speed is lower still, even a 95MB/s card is one sec to save an uncompressed 14bit large RAW file, but the 50 full sized RAW buffer can give a lot of room. In landscape, I never needed for more. Even photographing cycling time trial, I was fine with the SD card speed, although I have a backup XQD card. Also brought the official grip for it, not because of the added frame rate, but because time by time I do other types of photography than landscape and it makes easier to handle the camera in portrait orientation. Sure it adds nearly another 500 grams but ads another battery slot as well. the grip is rock solid compared to second market ones. Sure hiking with it up to a mountain is an extra challenge, but for the quality and rigidity I get, I'm okay with it. My only pain point is focusing in the live view. That one sucks, big time. Although I have it like 8 months, I didn't use the video recording, so I can't say a thing about it. The built-in intervalometer and silent photography modes make this camera a stunning one. With 4k timelapse basically, no hassle needed, in-camera can be done and still there is an option for 8k...

Hey Tim, great video! I am up here in the PNW, and it is a Landscape Photog’s dream for sure. I enjoy Landscape and Wildlife, so i had, still have, the D500 (which i love). I was going to sell it to get the 850, but decided to keep it as mainly wildlife/backup. I love the 850. Had it for about 6 months and slowly trying to acquire the Trinity of glass. I have the 16-35 f4 and it’s ok, but is soft in many areas. The one thing i have noticed, and mainly because i still am improving 😊, is that because of the large sensor, your technique is magnified big time. Especially hand holding, you need to up the shutter to ensure tack sharp images if glass doesnt have the VR. But, that’s why i love it, makes me get better 😊. Thanks for great review! Spot on

Hi Rob. You are so right about upping that shutter speed. The huge sensor magnifies any camera shake. Great comment! A+

Thanks for the review! Do you use the built in HDR function or do it manually in post? Would love to hear if the automatic HDR function works properly!
@TimShieldsPhotography
@TimShieldsPhotography 5 лет назад
I create all my HDR photos in Lightroom Classic CC. It is just so easy and you have more control over the creation process. I use bracketing on the camera and take three photos at -2, 0 and +2 EV. I have played with the internal HDR function and it works very well. You do need a tripod to use it of course because it is taking a few photos and you don't want anything moving between shots.

Good review Tim. How much of a step-up is it from the D810? Have you found the high ISO performance to be better? Have you tried out the focus stacking feature? At the moment I'm using the D810 and also have a D750 to use as a 2nd body when doing event photography. The D810 is great but not as good as I'd like for high ISO astrophotography. The D750 files are cleaner at ISO6400, but the D810 has more resolution. I'm not shooting as much these days so am struggling to justify purchasing the D850 - it costs almost $5K in Australia.

Hi Victor. You have two fantastic cameras in the Nikon D810 and D750. I find the high ISO is a touch better on the D850 compared to the D810, but the differences are not striking. In many cases it is difficult to tell the two apart. I have used the focus stacking feature and it was easy to figure out using in camera settings. I also used a focus stacking app that tethered to the camera (forgetting the name at the moment) and it was great. I was wanting to use focus stacking for super high resolution landscape panos. I hoped that i could zoom the lens to 200mm and capture both close up tree branches and faraway mountains, and then combine the stack in post. It didn't really work out. The immense differences in focus created some lines along the edges of the close up branches. I think I tried to get it to do the impossible. The focus stacking feature works very well and is probably best for macro or landscape setups with a little less difference in focus points between foreground and background.
@satoriivy175
@satoriivy175 5 лет назад
Tim Shields focus stacking works great for landscapes- I do it all the time with my D850. The best software for combining the stack is Helicon Focus in either Weighted Average or Pyramidal Stacking mode. Those lines usually show up if you’ve selected the wrong stacking mode, had too much movement of the subject or your focus step width is set too high (I use a step width of 2). Depending on how wide open you shoot the step width may need to be reduced further. At F/1.4 your step width should be at the smallest possible value and the camera will probably need to take at least 300 photos to get anywhere near infinity.

I have had my D850 for more than a year as well and I love it. I agree w some of you cons - I weigh under 100 lbs and for me it's heavy especially w good glass. I too wish the card slots were both XQD but do not miss the flash. Given these, I feel that my 850 is part of me and love photographing with it. It did take me a few months to improve my shooting as flaws are clearly visible with the sensor size. I used to be hesitant to crop and I still avoid it unless necessary but I can make large prints that are pristine from this camera. The grip is great, love ability to change image size right on the back as I often change to 4x5 or 1x1 in camera. Thank you; this was good to hear your review. Leslie

Really great content - great to hear real world experiences from someone who has been using the camera extensively and not just specs and numbers. Couple of points to note (to get really geeky) - you mentioned the array of autofocus points not being something you use - even using single point you are still making use of those many auto focus points unless you only ever use the very centre spot. If you're autofocusing on a foreground object towards the bottom left corner, you're making use of one of those more extreme 153 focus points. The cross-type ones are even more reliable, particularly in low light. Obviously it doesn't relate to manual focus, as you say. You also mentioned the sensor is unparalleled... it kind of is by the Sony a7R III and both share Sony sensor tech, of course. Sure, the Nikon has a couple of more MP, but both cameras have the same DXOMark score. Nikon's smart move to work with the enemy is why they overtook stubborn Canon in sensor tech long ago. Good on you, Nikon. All the reasons you give are why I'd love to invest in a D850, but it's the size and weight for travel that stops me. I was really hoping the Z7 would truly be a mini-D50, but alas it's not there (yet). Roll on the Z7 II :D

Great video!! I picked up a D850 and already impressed. Couple of questions if I may. Do you still use ND grads given the amazing dynamic range - I've not used them recently so considering leaving them at home. Also - when on a tripod do you always use the silent shooting in live view? If not are you on one of the Q settings with a delay to help with vibrations. Thanks in advance.
@TimShieldsPhotography
@TimShieldsPhotography 5 лет назад
I rarely use ND graduated filters now. Most of my photography is in the mountains with an uneven horizon, so ND graduated filters are not the best for that. Plus, to your point the D850 has so much dynamic range I can compensate for the sky in post like never before. Regarding silent shooting, I only really use it for timelapse because I am always trying to avoid using up the battery in live view. If vibrations are an issue, as you pointed out I flip up the mirror in Q mode. Very insightful questions Paul. I just made a video on Lee filters you might be interested in. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jgIJNmtB3vs.html

Hello Tim, I really enjoy your videos. I have a Samsung NX2000 mirrorless and I am not that happy with it. I am an amateur photographer that loves landscape photography. I have watched videos on astrophotography and macro photography and really enjoy them both and want to start trying them. Because this is a hobby on a budget, is there a good camera you would recommend for under $1000? And your thoughts on DSLR vs mirrorless. Thanks very much.

Great review, Tim. I went from a D500 to D850 and now face the confusing choice of an FX wide-angle lens. I've ordered a Nikon 16-35mm f/4, but now am wondering if I should have gone to one of the f/2.8 like the Nikon 14-24mm or Tamron 15-30mm G2. At some point I would like to do astrophotography, but Landscape is the main focus. Thanks! -- Scott

I agree two of the xqd cards. It takes some time to understand the exposure. I’m finding a bit of trial and error as different lenses are far apart when it comes to the best exposure settings. Way different from my D750. But hey it’s fun, so not complaining. Great review mate!

Last September I was replacing my Nikon D5200and wanted a camera that would last me through my coming retirement. It ended up a decision between the D850 and the Z7. I went for the Z7 solely for the lighter weight, hopefully now I have purchased your training material I will learn to take some amazing images. I am going to take the training at a nice slow pace so that when I retire next year I can spend the time taking some amazing photographs.

I own it and LOVE it, however for some of the things I shoot I have decided to go back to my D750 and D7100 (my least favorite). I am a "Light Painter" using both the Magilight (of which I have 2) and the Pixelstick. When taking photos I will later use to create .BMP files for these tools I use very little of the resolution of any camera. Since XQD cards are still relatively expensive and I don't the the high resolution any of my DX camera will do. I also shoot a lot of "freeby" events for local organizations that do not have a budget for a photographer. This is good exposure for getting other work later. I have decide for these events to go back to my trusty D750. When shooting the actual Light Painting photos (for exhibition) or when I have a paid shoot I will of course use my D850. One feature you forgot to mention in the backlit buttons on the back of the camera, which are important to me, as I shoot a lot of long exposures at night.

I own the D850 now for about 4 months, I'm new to photography for about 11 months, It's my go to camera, I also own a Nikon D500 and love that too but the D850 I would have to say does a better job of capturing low light unique images that takes your breath away! Great camera and yes the in body Ibis stabilization would make it dream come true! Hey but the D6 might have that?

I have had mine for a month having upgraded from the D-7000. While it is heavy to haul while hiking through the mountains of Colorado, it is well worth it. Good glass is important so I went with Tamron lenses as I liked the quality and price. The camera really challenges your shooting technique. Getting and keeping a steady grip is critical with slower shutter speeds. It is an amazing camera which is a joy to shoot with.
