Hey Everyone ! I hope you are all doing well 😀 I know there's been a real lack of content from me over the past few months but that will certainly change soon. until then I hope you find this first look at the DX 12-28 useful as always thank you all so much for watching !
As a content creator that uses DX cameras for video work, the only thing that has made me consider not buying this lens is the lack of a constant aperture. A constant f/4 would have been ideal. However, I understand the market for this lens, so I may be a fringe use case. There's lots of other things to love about this lens, and if I wasn't keeping my pennies for a Z8, I probably would have ordered one. As always, thanks for creating this video. You continue to be a go to source Nikon reviews/first looks!
Thanks for your video! I have been waiting for a wide-angle DX lens for my Z50 and Zfc which seems like forever. Niikon needed to introduce this lens, and they knew it. I, along with many other Nikon shooters, were growing impatient with the slow pace of introducing DX Z lenses, especially a wide-angle zoom with built-in VR. Now we can use the excellent 18-140 mm with this new wide angle zoom as a lightweight DX travel kit. I am very pleased!
Perfect lens for the z30 In my book it puts the Nikon offerings ahead of everyone else in the dx class vlogging/travel applications. I will be picking up one
I have already ordered one! I use Z DX cameras a LOT and even my Z 9 is OFTEN on DX. This power zoom lens is a great move by Nikon and Ricci talks videos are always very useful!
I also use my Z8 with DX lenses (the sigma 18-35mm 1.8 and viltrox 75mm 1.2) results are great and it will result in a smaller 21MP picture which is more than enough for travel and portraits
I love the idea of showing focal length in the evf. It's something I've written to Nikon support about re the other zooms. If you can feed the numbers to the Lens OLED then it should be edu enough to use the same feed to the EVF. Good review; thanks Ricci
I wanted this lens… but I jumped on the Sigma DX trilogy as soon as they were available, blew my budget and this will have to wait till next year - oh, well - I honestly wasn’t expecting Nikon to release that lens this year.
Hi Ricci, good to see you again. Very surprised this little beauty doesn’t come with a lens hood, perhaps Nikon starting to copy the likes of Canon in not always producing lens hoods in with the price! Seems like a perfect lens for its intended use and the power zoom could prove very handy. So this is a great little zoom lens, was hoping we may see you soon showing off a big zoom lens (200-600), I guess good things come to those who wait, it’s a good job many Nikon users are patient, lol. As always thanks again for keeping us up to date with all things Nikon. Have a great summer! 👏👍😀
Looks like a great companion lens for travel with the 18-140mm. The milky way images were great. As are the others. Only downside is having to buy the lens hood separately!
Nice to see you back here, and as always, providing us with excellent information! I'm with you on the idea of having the option to see focal lengths in the viewfinder of all Z cameras. That would be handy at times. :)
I agree. The Focal Length needs to be shown on the Viewfinder or Display. Especially with this new lens. Otherwise how do we know the actual focal length?
Learning that it isn't available on Z cameras surprised me. Other systems have had this for far longer. I know Olympus has had it starting at least with their first MILC, the E-P1. Maybe since earlier with live view in their DSLRs, but I only have the E-1.
Nice to see some DX news/love. Nikon needs to bring the heat though in the next eh hem z eight or something. The natives are getting restless. Im happy with my nines. Alos just received my 600mm z tc so I'm happy as a fox in a hen house. Good video as always..
this lens is amazing. I own a Z50 beyond a Z6 + various lenses, and mostly use it with the 10-20mm + FTZ. The lack fo DX lenses still keeps my M43 system alive when traveling. But if the F10-20mm for Z12-28mm trade-in is good I will definitely purchase it.,
The slowest zoom mode is excruciating! I have a Z5 and I'm very interested in, just to toss it in a pouch and take with me outside. Since I have a 24-120 already this will be a useful if lower res option. Thanks for all your work, Ricci.
There's no question in my mind that this lens was designed as a video-centric lens. I prefer other lenses for still photography but want this lens exclusively for video. It has everything you'd want... perfect size and weight for gimbals, internal focusing which is also great for gimbals, perfect focal range for gimbals, virtually no focus breathing, minimal fringing, great zoom controls including remote control options, plus it's sharp. My only question... what is the real-world effect for handheld video work of the lens VR in combination with the internal camera VR? I like the idea of using this lens with the Z6ii in DX mode. That camera's VR is not great for moving shots handheld, but I wonder if the lens will help the camera to perform better in those scenarios.
This would be the ideal lens to shoot 4K movie with my Z 7ii (which I generally don't do) with the added optional movie camera grip. If you already have a Z 7ii, like I do.
Nice sample photos, I have this lens on order & am looking forward to trying it out on my Nikon z 50, as the latest Firmware now supports the PZ features.
Thanks Ricci! Hopefully there's a setting added in FW at some point for a smooth roll-off/start-finish for the power zoom function so it doesn't start/stop abruptly. This is helpful for smoother video zooms. Also, what was the focal length for the still images you shared? Very nice! I'm guessing most were 12mm?
Back in the DV days, I had a Varizoom zoom controller, with a big, fat, pressure-sensitive rocker switch. Press a little, it zooms slow. Press it all the way in , you get the fastest zoom speed, with many steps in between. It would be nice if there was a modern equivalent. Video lenses and cameras have always had these nice, big zoom rockers. It's a lot better than twisting a ring and you can vary the speed, during your shot, without having to go into any menus, which sounds clunky AF to me
Thank you Ricci. Very useful info. This 12-28mm PZ lens is on my list. Plus the Z 24mm F1.7 DX. From your power zoom settings for recording, I find the -5 speed a bit slow, I would probably pick -3 or -2 instead but again I would test it to determine the best speed, depending on what subject is being recorded. This would be good for product video zooming for in studio, or else outdoor travel or street vlogging with slow power zoom recording of a scene location.
It’s a great lens and very sharp from corner to corner but it’s slow. It’s great for outside / daytime photography and landscape photography. Also for filming kids playing outdoors. I compared it to my Sigma 18-35mm 1.8 + FTZ2 adapter and the Sigma really outshines the 12-28mm in terms of cinematic rendering. But the 12-28mm remains a great little lens. They should have made it F2 or F3.5 constant.
I know they can’t make a lens for everyone but I really do wish they had also developed a 10-20 or even just the same lens but with a normal zoom for stills shooters. Our only options are still the f mount lenses and the adaptor.
Take a look at the new Nikon Z 24mm 1.7 DX, it's a prime lense without VR but it's very bright and should be great for street photography. I'm patiently waiting for it so I can sell my 28mm 2.8
or Z9... I mean, the Z9 was sitting there in the video with Ricci next to the Zfc. Ricci, will the firmware to control the Power Zoom make it into the FF mirrorless cameras? I've pre-ordered one but if I cant control the PZ on the Z9, with or without the mc-n10 grip then I'll cancel/return the lens. Wanting to use it in 2.3 crop mode 4k. Would be great if that will work on Z9 and Z8.
You said you have been shooting this lens for a couple of months. How long do you already shoot the 200-600mm (or 180-600mm as Nikon Rumors guess is) 😅
Hi Ricci, new to your videos and have a question hopefully you can help me. iv used a Nikon D3200 for years now but im now looking for another DSLR camera which has a flip out articulating screen allowing me to take self take photography fish captures! iv seen some that fold out but I need something that folds out and flips so I can see the shot whilst im facing the camera! Thanks
Something I'm wondering about is what the latency is like when using the remote to zoom? I'm imagining something like a parallax zoom effect if I were to use this lens on a gimbal, and imagine I would need to use the remote to do that. Is it fairly receptive?
Nikon continues to introduce new lenses, which is great. But Nikon really needs to start introducing new camera bodies, they have fallen behind their competition that it starting to become frustrating for us Nikon hobbyist photographer. If Canon starts introducing new affordable RF lenses, that match's their affordable camera bodies, their is going to be a large group of Nikon user jumping ship. Nikon are you listening????
Only Nikon Pro Bodies are lacking behind. The consumer bodies have a great value for the price you pay. Their only problem is eye AF which, for me personally, is not the biggest let down from a consumer POV
Yes, I use it on mine. It knocks the file size down to 3,936 pixels but that's still enough to view Flickr posts on a 4K monitor, which is about all I do with my files. I seldom shoot super-wide, so the 12-28mm is a compact and affordable lens that's useful for general photography.
Hi Ricci! Please tell Nikon to do something with all the cameras firmware. Every time my Z7ii or my Z30 go to stand by, the ML-L7 disconect, and we have to pairing again. This is not normal! I need stand by because mirrorless cameras eat a lot of power with continuous sensor reading and IBIS (Z7ii).
@@RicciTalks Well if you say so… Because i think it’s possible, it’s not S line of glass. Im just saying it, because I’ve seen third party lenses like, Zeis, Sigma, Tokina, small lenses from that aperture and focal length🙏✨
🥱🥱🥱 Nikon dropped the ball yet again. If they would have made the lens a constant F4 or even better 2.8. Nikon could have made a much more powerful statement in taking APSC more seriously.
You have a point, but size weight and price come to a factor here. I think they’re playing to lower end and consumer market. I personally wasn’t super enthusiastic about the lens until I saw what it was selling for
@@lightlivingktt well size and weight are debatable because Sony has a 10-20mm f4 PZ that’s about the same size as the Nikon 12-28 and cost about $700. I can see how a higher price might turn off some perspective buyers. But the better features might attract other buyers instead. What if Nikon finally releases an APSC camera made for advanced vloggers and content creators. What lenses are they going to have to choose from? If Nikon released a Z50 Mk ii with a flip screen, 4K-60p, 10 bit 4.2.2 N-Log (internal), with IBIS. I would personally choose the Viltrox 13mm f1.4 to vlog with over this lens….
@@livejames9374 most people I know that are budget minded. Stick with the kit lens that came with the camera that they brought from Best Buy… and then maybe they buy a $200 50mm f1.8 and then realize that it’s way too tight for what they intended to use it for 🙃.
@@Photomeike very very good points. It would’ve been better with a constant f4, and I’m sure there will be a higher end DX body with no available native glass that suits it…. Either way though…. , I actually have the viltrox 13mm 1.4. I got it from Vahagraphy. I also have the F mount 10-20 DX lens. Main reason why I would still want this power zoom lens is to get a wide angle zoom and not have to use the adapter in my kit
I get more and more upset at these “innovations.” I just want a lens that works all the time every time for my lifetime. My issue is my 70 200 vr that I stored several years ago, in its case, in my equipment cabinet. in a air conditioned home. I wanted to try it out on my new Z6 2. Auto focus was slow, balky, intermittent, and finally quit. Off it went to Melville, NY. Just sitting and it went bad. I cleaned the contacts and tried it on other cameras where it also failed. The Z6 2 is an admirable camera that works with any 50 mm lens I own including Leica lenses. Even the 40 mm is great. Wanting to set up the old Leica kit 28, 40, 90 I was on the way. Except
