olpf together with a slight digital high pass filter is a good way to suppress moiré effects and still having a sharp image. people that have a good background in signal analysis know that before digital sampling an analog filter makes sense. it is well known in the audio world under the term 'shannon's information theory'.
@quikee9195
@quikee9195 6 лет назад
You mean Nyquist-Shannon sampling theorem. The maximum frequency of a signal that's still possible to be exactly reconstructed is the the half of the sampling frequency. The higher frequencies need to be removed (with a LPF) before sampling or they will produce unwanted artifacts in the signal (ignorance of this costed me 1 grade in signal processing at the university). In the digital pictures the artifacts are visible as aliasing (and moire) - that's why LPF is also known as anti-aliasing filter.
@maschinenraum
@maschinenraum 6 лет назад
exactly. the aliasing mirrors the higher frequency values into the lower frequency area and then they are getting visible as aliasing artifacts.

I used a Z7 yesterday - absolutely loved it. Now that Nikon are taking video more seriously I think it's great times for hybrid shooters. Canon will soon join the party - thanks to Sony things are getting very exciting.
@Tompie913
@Tompie913 6 лет назад
It’s quite simple. The OLPF is necessary for “lower” resolutions around 24MP to reduce moiré. The tiny loss in sharpness is totally worth the massive reduction in moiré. For the ultra high res sensors in the D850 or Z7 moiré is not much of an issue, so there’s not much need for the OLPF and its (small but existent) loss of sharpness. Bear in mind that the top-of-the-line D5 has an OLPF, because it needs to with only 20MP. The presence or absence of an OLPF should not be bothering anyone - it’s just an engineering decision based on the sensor resolution.
@MeTOre1
@MeTOre1 5 лет назад
The Sony A9 doesn't have one and it is amazing.
@tokobjork
@tokobjork 6 лет назад
24MP is less resolving than say 40MP sensor with a specific lens. This makes it more easy to get a situation in the 24MP case where the lens out resolves the sensor, or put in another way, a situation where there the pixel density can not cope with all the detail that it is presented with. In this situation when the Nyquist sampling theorem is not met whereby the image artifact Moiré negatively can affect image quality. The OLPF in front of the sensor smears away image detail, this way the sensor can resolve image data without resulting image artifacts.
@jonasfjellstedt9168
@jonasfjellstedt9168 6 лет назад
If I understand it right, it makes more sense to leave the optical low pass filter out for higher pixel densities... The 24MPix full frame sensor would be a lot more susceptible to moire and other problems without the AA filter...

During a decade and ++ years l have been blown away by the results l have achieved with different Nikon cameras (and lenses). The D700, D7200, D810 are awsome cameras that l every now and then got great results. The times l did’nt get great results were the photographers fault, not the gear. Now that l have the Z6, l can compare it to my previous gear (D700/7200/810) l’ve could’nt be more happy’er. Excellent image quality and excellent lenses and with the ftz adapter it opened up a new chapter by the way it let me play with old Nikkor’s. The fact that you can magnify the image in the excellent electronic viewfinder, makes it a ultrafunny to control the result with old but awsome Nikkor glass. Who knew that manual focusing was that funny??

The OLPF in Z6 is to eliminate moire in video (the mirrorless are much more focused on video than DSLRs). BTW Canon FF mirrorless EOS R (also single card) has an articulated touchscreen!

Will the Z7 be able to produce sharper images then the Z6 ? Probably, will you be able to see it without insanely pixel peeping ? probably not. I own the D750 (which has an AA filer) and D850 which doesn't and probably is the best camera in the market right now. Do I see big differences between these 2 cameras ? NO! both amazing!, its more about the lenses and photographers skills.

Ironically I didn't value OLPF until I tried shooting a shop exterior and it turned out to be a moire nightmare. I shot with a camera that didn't have one and the images looked horrendous. No amount of trying to fix it in Photoshop would work. The shop in question had a very elaborate arrangement of long thin led strips illuminated in various tones of pink and purples throughout the store front. Needless to say the only way to rid my images of this issue was to reshoot ( this time with the D750 which thankfully does have the high pass filter ). So yeah, most of the time you'll not be bothered by the effects of moire, but trust me, the issue still exists and it can be a useful feature even if the filter technically robs you of absolute resolution 😊

For Video and Event Work an OLPF is great: Less work in editing especially on clothes when you have literally 1000s of images after a Wedding for example. Even for landscape and product photography I doubt any client will ever tell you that you need a camera without an OLPF. More resolution like the jump from 24 to 50 mp yeah, but I've never heard of the anti aliasing filter being a problem.

@Griffin_Sniped_U

There isn't a full frame camera with less than 36mp without an lpf. The reason is pixel pitch. The same reason is why crop sensors don't have them. The opposite reason exists why they are not on high mp ff and crop sensors.

I wonder, why can't they have the OLPF built into the lens or as a mechanical plate that the camera body can slide in front of the sensor, thus it is only active if the user wants it? Usually, artifacts can be avoided if you record at the full sensor resolution and then downscale to the target resolution. For example, compare footage recorded at 4K from a camera such as the Panasonic GH5 to footage captured by a camera like the Sony A6300 and A6500 where the footage is captured at 6K but downscaled to 4K. Even though the output is ultimately the same resolution, the downscaled 6K gets the effect of supersampling which improves overall quality. Think MSAA + supersampling in games but in real life, you get rid of aliasing and high frequency artifacts with no unwanted visual issues (provided your GPU is powerful enough to maintain the frame rate needed).
@unoengborg
@unoengborg 6 лет назад
Pentax does something similar- They have a OLPF free sensor that can shake, if needed, to create enough blurriness to eliminate folding. On a full frame sensor the sample rate will be lower than on an APS-C sensor. Thus a OLPF would be more motivated on a 24 megapixel FF camera than on a APS-C camera like D7200, and even more so on Nikon D5 with even lower sampling rate.
@darrenlim2222

Their flagship D5 has OLPF/AA filters on it as well, and the D5 is a professional camera. And there you go, OLPFs are a good thing. Nikon could have saved some cost if cameras are without these OLPF filters.

You confuse the “Bayer” filter with the OLPE total different. All Nikons are Bayer as most cameras are. The Fujifilm X is the main exception
@quikee9195

It's impossible to not have some kind of color filter (Bayer or X trans) and produce color pictures. CCD cell only measures light intensity.

Hey Matt. I am currently a photo noob. Really starting to get into the hobby. I currently have a Nikon D3400 with kit lens (18-55 3.5-5.6, 70-300 4.5-5.6) and the 35mm f1.8. I am in no rush to “upgrade,” I want to become well versed and experienced with this camera and photography before I move up. Do you think Nikon will release a mirrorless below the Z6/Z7 in the next few years?
