The face detection is awesome, (I saw it perform) but; ..... it was in a perfectly lit environment! I need to try it on low light and random situations.

From what I have seen online, focus racking its a little slow to start, but once initiated the transition is very smooth and there is no "over and back"...what also heard is, there is focus racking speed adjustment in the menu. I think this time, Nikon took serious the video performance.

This has been one of my biggest questions as well Matt. Nikon has always sucked in the video AF area. Hoping we see more tests come out. I'm hoping to rent a Z7 when it comes out to do some testing on it. I plan to buy the Z6 if it is good.

@@DaveMcKeegan yes - no mention of under what lighting - to be honest all I need is a good touch focus screen and I'm happy - I can video on a D750 then I can certainly video using a Z camera - I'm testing one at the end of the month.

Absolutely Mark, it's horses for courses. What Tony Northrup was saying was that in good light with high contrast the AF seemed good (which obviously Nikon would set up good lighting at a press event), but in dimmer light it struggled even using large focus areas, and it became extremely unreliable when using smaller AF areas. Unfortunately it looks like this camera will be very polarising amongst people until full production versions start working out into the world for proper testing to be done - would love to hear what you make of it once you've tried it

@@DaveMcKeegan I think I may know why that is - I've just read their AF part again after your reply - I might have this wrong so read it yourself - if your on say F8 it stops down while focusing and can hunt they say (it would on any camera in bad lighting) - so you may need to open up to let light in to get good AF - they think a firmware could easily fix this - I focus in dim light opened up anyway so it may not affect me the way I use a camera. I thought that was strange when you said it as it's rated at -4 eva - maybe Tony didn't realize this. That's the problem with quick demos I suppose - for instance theres a quick AF mode change on the front function button that I saw a Nikon (Canada) guy use that probably no one was aware of. PS I watched a German guy in Tokyo AF in video in fairly dim light and it was AF perfectly. (that's how sad I am ) 😃

Hi, it might be impossible to answer the question right now. Why? Because all the Z7 used by the press so far were actually pre-production cameras and in this respect, it seems that the software of the camera was not finalized at all. Now, some people say that the Z7 will not be ready by the end of September and that its release will be delayed...

My "potential" purchase does not hinge on anything directly related to video performance. I would only consider the Z6 as that is more than sufficient for my needs. I don't print anything larger than A3 photobooks or 18" x 12" prints. My primary concerns revolve around stills photography and I want to know how the face detect AF will work, how good is it? Of paramount importance is how will the FTZ adapter work with both my Nikkor and Tamron lenses? I have a few Nikkor (and one Tamron) lenses (Tamron 24-70 f2.8 G2, Nikkor 20mm f1.8G, Nikkor 50mm f1.4G, Nikkor 85mm f1.8G, Nikkor 80-200mm f2.8) which are all FF, two are DX (old 18-70 kit lens and 35mm f1.8), I don't want to spend thousands on another system. How about the EVF? I wear glasses, I would like to not have to use them when doing my photography, if I can use the EVF to review photo's etc with the diopter adjusted (I guess it works similar to a DSLR viewfinder?) to my eye, then that would be a real bonus. Rather than having to get my glasses out to review the LCD screen which I find particlulary useless, especially outdoors when shooting OCF. I'd like to hear about the low light performance as well. I'm not going to buy mirrorless for the sake of it, there has to be a clear advantage over DSLR's. I will wait for the reviews, I may well wait another year or so before I upgrade, as I'm quite happy with my current D7100. ;-)

The first firmware update will be to convert the QXD slot to SD. The second firmware update will be to add a second SD slot.

I don't think the video or photo AF is anywhere near on par with Canon or Sony from the 'first look' videos I have seen it looks for want of a better word 'flaky' , focus tracking also looked well below it's competitors.

On Jared Polin's first look video, you can see an example of the video autofocus. It's smooth and accurate, however slightly slow. 👍👌

Played with it for 5-7 mins at local event with Z-mount and Adapted lenses - underwhelmed me compared to the same limited time with a9 and a7Riii. Never shot Canon Dual AF. But maybe when I can dial in the right settings and shoot with it in real life situations, it might be ok. I’m a Nikon shooter (d5200 & a few times with d850) - so I’m use to less than stellar AF. It won’t bother me in the same way that no IBIS in Nikons hasn’t bothered me. Meaning - I want it, but have learned to live without it. Not a deal breaker.

They have less to lose. And are less likely to include anything better than Sony offers. Both Sony and Canon don't want to cannibalize their cinema cameras.

Honestly (and I know I’m in a minority here), there are some of us who are intrigued by EVF while also completely put off by the ergonomics of Sony bodies. Shooting large glass 300-400mm on and up on full frame bodies at fast moving targets (Airshow Photography) has kept me completely out of this whole Mirrorless thing. The video aspects of these new cameras are of no value to SOME of us. Doing zero people or event photography, and finding no value in “eye-AF”, Mirrorless is likely not in MY future anytime soon. AF however is extremely important - locking on and tracking a jet flying 600mph to near Mach 1 but I’ve achieved that using 9 Center points of a 61-point grid on a Canon 5DM4. Too invested in L glass to change brands I’ve been curious to see how the 2 big DSLR guns would respond. Who knows what Canon develops (and are they watching this Nikon thing play out, perhaps learn a few things- who knows). Still waiting. That said good thoughtful videos as usual.

Nikon has shown to be not serious about the mirrorless market. Their financial position is not strong and so long as they ride the DSLR train into the tunnel of obsolesence, I see it getting worse. The best advice for Nikon users is to sell your glass while you can. Death may take several years but it will come and be very unruly when it happens.

I am wondering if some of the solutions for wireless tethering out there could suffice for a second sd card. That could make the Nikon Zs work for weddings. I watched the B&H videos. These are professional photographers. They answered the focus, video, battery etc. to my satisfaction. Now I'll wait for Photokina. Nikon should have a few firmware updates by then. The world will descend upon Nikon in even larger hordes, and we'll see. I though the Northrup's ridiculously unprofessional video was trash. Their printer was running out of ink. They seemed to have slunk into the event. Maybe Tony's Sony fanboy reputation got them dis-invited? Despite claiming they weren't doing a product review, Tony pulls out a rubbish test of the 5-axis sensor thingy, a pathetic test of focus testing by Tony walking in low light towards the camera, and Chelsea showing that she can't achieve close focus when every one else use the camera could. And they did this in one hour! It make you wonder how much time they spend on their other reviews. And then they are not going to read ANY of their fans comments on their video! Its a wonder. We're all pissed off at Nikon for botching this. It reminds me when I used to love Apple computers. Every new announcement was a Fail, but I still bought them. Until I didn't

bassangler73 No, I need a cinema camera. Camcorders don't allow me to adjust the depth of field. Camcorders don't allow for interchangeable lenses. Only cinema cameras can do that. Well, I don't have $10k for a Canon C300, $7k for a C200, $6k for Ursa Mini Pro. That's much cheaper than $25k RED Epics, but not affordable for mere mortals. That's still cheaper than $40k Arri Alexas. Blackmagic's new Pocket Cinema camera 4k is the only solution at an affordable price. Camcorders don't allow manual adjustments that's cinema cameras do. Otherwise everything looks like America's Funniest Home Videos all the time. slr/mirrorless system with interchangeable lenses have been the only thing available to us. That's why so many videographers and photographers have purchased slr cameras. In fact there are whole text books written on DSLR filmmaking used in film schools. In fact many filmmakers today get started with Canon T3i, GH4/5 and the like. It isn't as simple as saying "get a camcorder," but I do agree with the basis of your argument: We need a piece of equipment designed for the purpose. The problems it that piece of equipment has never been made. The GH4 was a stop on the road. The GH5 was better. The GH5s was a real attempt targeted at filmamkers, but it won't be until Blackmagic's 4k pocket Cinema Camera launches that we will have a piece of equipment capable of doing exactly what both of us are saying. My point is we haven't had a choice but to use slr and mirrorless system because that's all we could afford. You have had the luxury of having a piece of equipment that meets your need. We fledging filmmaker s have not had that same luxury. Put yourself in our shoes. What if video was all that existed? What if all you wanted to do was take stills? Would you be happy with your D3300's ability to lift stills out of the movie picture? That's exactly what we filmmakers have had to deal with for years now.

it’s all good as artist we just have use what you want these days. Choose your weapon then create. This is such a great time to create. Happened to be working on a new web series using a Samsung S9 for the camera.... how about that. I just wanna push the envelope. My personal focal point is not Camera but STORY. STORY is the most important thing... not which camera . God bless

I thinking the Z 's are going to be deadly camera's for street shooting . I could give a shit about AF as i only intend on using Nikkor AIS glass.. For me, I think this is going to be a great first step for Nikon going mirrorless FX. The ability to use Legacy Nikkor AIS is th game changer.. AF.. nonsense.. Don want it. Don't need it..

For my next customer’s order, I go with one Z7 with one XQD. I do not need the airbag of my car either. I never had an accident with an activated airbag. Data backup on the PC is also complete nonsense. I never had a broken hard drive. Kick out your NAS! No risk, no fun! Did you hear, you two slot scaredy-cats!

An airbag saved my handsome face from being disfigured. I've had SD cards fail on me, lucky I was just shooting ants and insects and not something professional. My laptops have failed on me but all my important files are backed up in a external hard drive.

It's a bust... For FF should at least have 2 cards, is not the year 2k. If they had a dx with one card and the FF with 2 cards, it would have been better than 2 camera with one card. Not purchasing unless is free. D500 and d850 or d810 for me.
