Kai loves it. Fro hates it. McNally gives it a thumbs up. The Northrups a thumbs down. And so on, and so on. Very entertaining. And, it just proves that we all have different likes and needs. Unlike Mordor, there is no one camera to rule them all. Personally, I'm loving mine.

Yep, you're so right, we are all different and if we don't like the feature set one camera has (or has not), look at others or stick with what you have. Personally, I am very keen to own the Z7 but its price will probably kill that dream, the Z6 is a more realistic target but for now my D750 will do the job just fine.

Yes, a good indicator of the ones that got paid to play LOL. The Northrups at least come out and say they get no money from their sponsors. This review seemed a lot like he had a gun to his head to say nice things LOL.

@@Blackriver69 The Northrups admitted in a followup video that part of the reason they slammed the Z7 and didn't hit Canon nearly as hard is that they bought into the Nikon pre-release hype and were disappointed that it didn't live up. Canon skipped the hype and got a much more favorable review, even though the camera isn't any better, by many measures not as good. IBIS? That is far from the "objective" viewpoint that the Northrups claim. Besides the one card knock on the Nikon, which is valid, the other main reason they disliked the Z7 is autofocus. Is autofocus the only valid feature worth rating a camera on? For me, the Z7 is fine, once I learned how to set the camera up. It's not as fast as Sony for continuous. But, like most, I never shoot high-speed sports. I've seen a couple of birders say they had no problems with the Z7, see Mark Smith ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DQFPjvIBQfE.html There are many other features that may be more important for individuals than that. For me, it's weatherproofing, which may be as good as any camera out there. I saw a Sony bricked in heavy rain. @@michaelmckeept I lost a bit of respect for the Northrups after that video. Not balanced at all. The Canon R ate a bunch of their pictures while on a safari and, even though the R is inferior to the Z in several ways, they made out like it was a better camera.

I believe it is a better camera than Canon EOS R. The very low ISO 64 offers better dynamic range and colors than all other full frame sensors. However it is difficult to have very low native ISO and low noise with high ISO. Nevertheless the sensor of Nikon Z7 is similar to the Nikon D850.

Thank you as always for your excellent and humorous presentation. I'm glad to find that you like the body and have given an optimistic tone to your assessment. .I'm looking forward to trying one out and I didn't expect to see that lag in the display. So, unless the focus is set to manual and "fixed" it's not a very good vlogging camera? Wow, that's a tad troubling. Is that a software fix? Thank you as always and YES, Adorama is always my first stop for all things photography and video, great plug there! If you're an NPS member, they can also arrange those early deliveries of equipment. Thumbs UP of course, looking forward to follow-on evaluations.

I do not see that lag at all on my Z7. I believe his camera was lagging because he was splitting the video stream, one to the camera monitor and the other to the Ninja V.

I own sony a7riii and in the process of building my lens collection. Honestly if I could buy again, I would probably still go a7riii, but I would give z7 a serious consideration especially considerating Nikon is still decades above Sony for lens selection. I don't own one Z7, but by watching so many videos and reviews, I believe it is a serious contender in the mirrorless market, one that Sony should pay attention to. In one more generation or two Nikon should have no issue with competing with Sony who is the best in mirrorless and the choice would be a lot like "should I go canon or nikon" like ten years ago when someone is buying a DSLR. I just wish Nikon won't make a stupid mistake thinking DSLR and mirrorless will co-exist for a long time as two different market/products and waste huge money (considering how struggling they are now) on F mount. DSLR is dead, forever and ever. Honestly I think even the evf should be gone soon in a few years. Who the fuck needs that tiny screen when you have a giant one on the back of your camera functioning just as well and is probably 100x times bigger. In a few generations we should be seeing an SoC like digital camera design, one censor and one SoC handling everything that is going to further simpify the image processing and drag down the manufacture cost. I shot Nikon like 10 years ago as a hobbyist for a while and while typing on my keyboard now I still have a 50/1.8D on my desk. I wish they can live longer, like Fujifilm survived the time change. Although I never used Canon, and judging by the performance of EOS R it is clear Canon is doing kodak-style suiciding, I wish they can survive too. It is always to have more selection, plus, their lens are so good and cheap.

Nice review Kai! I agree with a lot of your sentiment about Nikon and its colors. Sony's AF system is much more refined and has way more options to get the type of shot you need. But Nikon's system is not as bad as a lot of people made it out to be. At least from what I found in my test. I would put it slightly behind Sony's system. Needs a bit of tweaking. But overall the Nikon Z7 is a solid piece of kit and is a great start for Nikon in the Full Frame Mirrorless game.

The Z7 and Z6 are a different category of camera. The Nikon's are rugged pro build grade and weather sealing throughout, with a pro card system that will always be more reliable then consumer grade SD, even 2 of them. For people who shoot outdoor, or in dusty wet conditions, no question the Z are the only way to go for full frame mirrorless. The future path of lenses looks a lot brighter with the Z mount, so lenses will be sharper corner to corner, faster apertures and T-stop with less distortion. For pros who want wireless backup at very high speed, the WT-7 1 gigabit/sec long range wireless link is the perfect answer for serious photographers. The Sony has more features that appeal to gadget collectors and it is popular for those who ungrade every 12-16 months, but for those who keep cameras longer, or want peak image quality, the build and IQ are pretty much in Nikon's corner. I got to use the first one that showed up in my city 2 weeks ago and was much more impressed with its still photography and did not even try video. The sharpness of the 24-70 at f/4 was noticibly better than the D850 with a 24-70 2.8g or e at f/4...just yesterday it became available to the public. I played a lot with focus but still unsure of what modes is going to work best in a given situation. When selecting a focus point, it was dead on, every shot. Tracking was less sure but is impacted by the range of settings

Good review Kai. I just bought the Z7 and flat out love it. The IBIS is incredible. Best I’ve ever used. I’m getting incredibly sharp portrait images with my Sigma 105mm f1.4 and 135mm f1.8 lenses hand held. I’m leaving the tripod behind! And the colors and picture IQ are second to none.

I know this was 4 years ago but I've just ordered a used OG Z7 to complement my pair of Z6ii's as a backup for weddings but also for the cropability. How would you rate the Z7 with all the firmware updates? I also often use the Sigma 135 at weddings and portrait sessions.

What I've heard from multiple reviewers is that the focusing is sketchy in low light, and the facial tracking is not as good as Sony or Fuji. That is most important to me as a wedding and corporate photographer, so I need the low light focusing to be as quick as possible, and need dual cards in case of failure, which happened unfortunately last week. I would personally choose the A9 if I had the money, but instead have my eyes set on the A7iii. I currently shoot the D750 and D600, but use a lot of the D lenses that wont autofocus with the Nikon adapter anyways. Unless Nikon comes out with a newer edition to their Z series in the next year or so, I am going to get the A7iii. I have experience with the A6000 and that focus speed was amazing, so with newer tech it can only be better now.

Just watched this and your EOS R videos back to back, and have to say I prefer the video quality of the EOS. As a Canon user with dual pixel AF, I don't think I could ever live without it again! So.... They're both mirrorless, and they're both hucking fuge. Having had a photographic career spanning over 45 years, I'm now officially retired, and use my pro glass on 200D and 80D. DPAF on both of these seems to blow the Z7 out of the water, and I even find myself using the 200D on liveview most of the time, which gives me a SHEDLOAD of focusing points. I'll be interested to see how quickly the native glass collection grows for both systems, because I can't help but perceive both offerings merely meeting consumer demand for full size Nikons and Canons with their mirror boxes ripped out. Without a doubt, BOTH are beautiful bits of engineering, but neither offers the groundbreaking performance that users have been craving. Brilliant video as usual, by the way, and nice to see you shooting in Richmond😀

This camera has been getting absolutely hammered by some people, and I don't really understand why. Seems pretty good to me, and Nikon will improve any shortcomings (card slots, AF) in future bodies. The Z mount potentially has a really bright future ahead of it.

Couldn't agree more, the Nikon launches were royally roasted which was totally unjustified in my view, having used a Z7 I have to say it is one of the best cameras I have used in a long time, it is certainly going to shake up the marketplace.

I don't know... It could be the fact they marketed it as a professional grade camera, when in reality it is actually no better than an introductory d3400 or d5600. It could be the fact that it costs over $3000. It could be the fact that you can't use it in any professional settings where backups matter (weddings and sports). It could be because it isn't a convincing enough product where anyone who owns any significant Nikon DSLR gear or other brands would consider making the switch into Nikon mirrorless as a primary camera or even a secondary camera. It could be because they don't actually have anything proprietary about their camera, so they didn't innovate anything new and just came out with a crappier 2014 mirrorless camera. I don't know what it could be...

I'm a Sony shooter of 4K video adventure travel shows. And I'm so impressed with my A73 and its high speed G lenses. But video focussing is still dodgy with the Sony. I think its great that at last a competitor is chasing Sony. I won't change. Not yet anyway. This does look like an awesome system.

Great run down Kai, these cameras got a raw deal from some when in fact the offer a fantastic set of features and legacy options for nikon shooters wanting to go mirrorless. The backwards compatibility with lenses, new video features and true ergonomics are what its about. I think Nikon have done a great job with their first mirrorless products, cant wait too get one into the field for some wildlife photography soon!

Tom, I love your channel but we can’t forget Sony was crucified for having 1 card slot, having poor autofocus for sports, and many other small issues the Nikon suffers from. Interestingly, I liked the A7ii so I would put this in that same league. Nikon themselves messed up by their marketing hype of this camera. No where NEAR mirrorless reinvented. It’s only fair that the same ridicule Sony got goes straight down the line to Canon and Nikon. I BELIEVE the next offerings from Canon and Nikon will address all those issues. For me, I got the Fuji XT3. Can’t beat the performance to price ratio on that camera

Totally fair that new camera are pulled apart to help the industry move forwards and indeed the other manufacturer cameras also did take flack for a single card slot, although an SD rather than the more stable XQD. I am very excited for the future of these cameras in the Nikon lineup an agree the next generation will be hopefully a huge step above now where we are. Very True Tom, I would MUCH rather have an XQD slot than an SD card slot. No doubt. And yes, I cannot wait to see what happens next. I love my XT3, went to fuji from Nikon. I miss Nikon a little but I am enjoying Fuji and an EVF. I am really hoping they get some better Long telephoto lenses soon. Anyway take care Tom!

I am not sure where the fantastic set of features is. And the lens compatibility how is it better that adapted Canon lenses on Sony? If i watched and read correctly the backward compatibility exists, but of course the old lenses do not function as well as the native ones.

A7riii is ~1 year old and easily be bought at $2600 used. A9 is 1.5 year old and can be easily bought at $3150 used. Both at good condition. Where as Z7 is $3400 recently released with barely any used market available.

@@HOLYCC In the UK the A7iii is £1999, the Z6 is £2099, I think that makes a reasonable price comparison, the A7Riii is £2899 (just reduced by Sony from £3199) the Z7 is £3399 again a fair price comparison ignoring the price drop.

This looks great, but the Z6 is the real highlight for me, might just be the best all rounder on the market after the X-T3. Gorgeous colours, great build and handling, and full frame 4k 10 bit! Only the video autofocus and styling seems better on Fuji, plus not having to use a recorder to unlock class-leading video features like 10 bit and log profile.

Autofocus issues around 4:25 were likely caused by the light flashes in the background, maybe a TV being on and the light was causing the auto-focus to grab onto the new light source.

I personally think that the real value of an equipment like this is not necessarily based on the price.. yes, I’m a Nikon shooter, and just for been able to use my current lenses and the main features of this camera as Nikon’s first mirrorless make it a real valuable equipment for me, we all know and recognize the good specs for the Z Series. I bought the Z7 a month ago and I’m very happy with it, for weeks I was doubting about it, but I took my chances and I’m not disappointed. As many other Nikon shooters, I’m waiting also for their new updated firmware, announced just a week after I bought my camera, of course this announce make me feel more confidence about my investment. We would be able to test again these Z series once the firmware is available and hopefully Nikon gets closer to what Sony is offering as the Autofocus leader at this moment. Time will tell, and I hope that this bring new challenges to the manufacturers to bring us all better equipments, without forget why we take pictures and use our skills to make better images...

Too many people are saying the the new Nikon mirrorless is not value to money, what they forget is that it is not a one but two camera launch. The z6 is starting a couple hundred dollar more than a gh5 or about 500 more than the XT3, if someone told me I would get a FF camera for only 500 USD more than a APSC camera I would say thats a bargain. The second thing is the comparison to the D850 for the z7. If you consider that both are only high megapixel camera, but as a hybrid shooter the z7 brings a lot more value with best in class video autofocus, 10 bit, log and IBIS. You could also argue as just a photo camera the nearly full coverage of the AF will make it a better portrait, fashion, architecture, landscape camera. It might only loose as a sport action camera.

Yeah, I really think people should be talking more about the Z6 than the Z7. It's a far more attractive camera as far as value goes. Most people won't need the extra resolution of the Z7, especially when it costs almost twice what a Z6 does.

yeaa that's what people have been saying for months about the A7iii , it's a total bargain, considering its FF, it has reliable AF, 120fps, amazing ISO performance etc The Z6/Z7 are inconsistent in video AF and have a laggy sceen, (??).. other than that, they are pretty good!

I had hands on with the Z7 I was not impressed it feels like a D5500 only slightly bigger if you are in Nikon glass it will serve you well but it’s not worth swapping for!

Considering all the recent reviews I've seen of the Nikon Z7, I'm really surprised at some of the reactions. I was actually expecting Kai to find more fault in this camera, cause others put it through the AF paces and it wasn't all great. But from what I'm seeing a lot of more video centric people like Kai really like what the Nikon Z series offers, and the more photo oriented shooters like Jared Polin and the Northrups seem to be really disappointed by it. The Z offers some comprehensive video features that can easily outclass the Canon and Sony offerings, but really fall short of class leading AF and action shots that its DSLR brethren like the D850, D500, and the Sony A7III/RIII/A9 can do. And I get that, if you're used to how a D850/D5 operates, the A7III/RIII/A9 can match that very well. And they have good video features that, while not the best, overall make a strong package. I guess it just really depends on what you do. If you do lean more towards general photography, color science and more video focused features, the Nikon Z series makes a real fantastic splash in. But for those who really need more all around flexibility, and honestly can do the most overall, the A7III can provide that. And this is from a full frame stand point, cause if we add APS-C cameras to the mix the Fuji XT3 just took the crown. What a time to be alive.

Not that one, the mark V has the built-in ND filter which is crucial for video in daylight. You don't need a longer lens for vlogging.

An oddly positive review for a camera that seems to have a lot of downfalls. Except for ergonomics and LCD/EVF, I felt that each point was summed up as "pretty good" or "ok". For that much more money I don't see how this would be a more attractive buy than A7iii or A7riii (I don't have either, so not fanboying), unless you already have a ton of Nikon glass. But that doesn't really make the body that much better does it? Just means it fits into your current ecosystem. Sure you can get 10-bit, but what good is that if you cant focus? In particular the low light bit confused me. "Low light focusing is noticably slow.... but otherwise it's good!". EOS R review seemed a lot more honest (and harsh). I get that everyone is tired of the dual card slot argument but now it seems to be mostly brushed off/ignored just to be different...

LOL you mean by whom, some click bait youtube videos that had 5 minutes with a totally new and different camera. Apart from photo autofocus, everything is better. Nikon never sold it as a sport action camera, but it does not mean that it is a slough in autofocusing ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DQFPjvIBQfE.html , the rest it is just better, better build, evf, viewfinder, ibis, 10 bit is huge for video and even autofocus is better in video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2tvBykD_sNQ.html . Not to forget that this is the high megapixel premium version, in terms of value the z6 is right up there with the A73 and higher end APSC, m43 MILC.

If you are going to use a camera all day, day in and day out, ergonomics are huge, as is the EVF. It's why I don't shoot Sony, which I rented for a couple of conference/event jobs, and tried to like. That's not counting: weather-sealing, menu system, focus stacking, intervalometer, legacy glass, JPEG color., camera app, and flash system. As to low-light video, except for vlogging, most serious video shooters use manual focus. The touch focus on my Z7 works fine at ISO 6400, which is as low as I would work without lights. That 10 bit is worthwhile. The autofocus isn't equal to Sony, but we got by for almost 200 years making photos without continuous autofocus. BTW, I've used the A7rIII, and while it's AFC is much better than the Z7's, I don't find it quite reliable enough to depend on, at least not for paying gigs.

I am no expert but as a 30 year non-professional Nikon shooter, I just couldn’t get used to the Sony A9. Its partially my fault as I never used the camera enough to learn the menu system and every time I tried to do something I would get lost. I think if I went all in and sold my Nikon bodies and glass, etc, I would have forced myself to really learn the Sony, I could have made it work. I really like the Eye-Fi, if that is the correct spelling, and I will miss that excellent feature. But since I wasn’t able to let go of my Nikon, a foot in both camps didn’t work for me. I haven’t purchased the Z7 yet. I want to see the low light capabilities of the Z6 and having a smaller file size (I have the Nikon D850) might make sense. The focusing issues mentioned here and there is a bit of a concern. Sony is several generations ahead so I know I will get suckered in to Nikon early and then the next model will come out in a year or two all fixed up and presented as the best camera ever. I just would like to sit with a Sony engineer who designed the menu system and ask “Why?”. It never felt right to me and I liked the camera. So, I am cutting my losses with the Sony and going without a mirrorless for a while until the Z6 gets run through its paces. Thanks for the review.

@@mdavern I thought that I'd like the Sony, so I rented the 7r III for ten days. That was long enough to get a handle on the camera. I didn't take to the camera, partly for the same reason as yours, and ended up with the Z7, which works for me. You might want to wait until the Z6 hits the rental shops next year and give it a try. Just a probably irrelevant thought. The new Fuji X-T3 is supposed to have excellent focus.

I've filmed close to 50 weddings and events in the last 2 months with the Z6, and I'm very happy with it. The EVF is great to have, and it has all the bells and whistles of the D850 plus more. I'll be getting a Z7 and selling my D850. (when I do nature photography, I love the 45 mega pixels ... :). Things l don't like about the Z6: The new tilt screen doesn't tilt all the way down like the D750, and the other thing is they don't have the 24-120mm lens on the line up, which for fast moving video events is the best lens out there.

Nah, I still feel the Sony A7iii video is better. Auto focus is way better, and that’s a must for me given I often shoot on a gimbal and also the Sony shoots 6k which it downsamples to 4K, so will have more detail. The 10 bit would be nice but having to use an external recorder is a deal breaker for me - it’s more cost, weight and hassle to be honest. Also the A7iii is significantly cheaper. Black Magic’s pocket 4K looks damn good but poor auto focus again a deal breaker

This is a no go. Too many small issues. Hopefully the next version is better and the lens support is better by then I'm interested in changing over but at this point looks like I'm buying a d850. I'll deal with the slightly worse video mode for now for all the upsides. I have d lenses so I'd need to replace those as well

Z7 is expensive, and it does have some issues with AF, which could be easily correct by FW update. Nikon may bring those updates with Z6, and Z6 could be a big surprise, to make some people to regret for what they said in past. Nikon colours look the best I've seen so far, including Fuji, Canon and Sony.

Strange that stills weren't even really mentioned. Comparing this camera with the Sonys should absolutely mention the Sony eye AF. It's a beast of a feature that works shockingly well. Having said that, as a A7Riii hybrid shooter who struggles with Sony colors, all I am waiting for is a good eye AF system from Canon or Nikon...or, for Sony to hopefully fix their color science. That's how much I hate working with the Sony colors. I would gladly sell thousands of dollars of glass and move back to Nikon or to Canon if either of those cameras had as good of an eye AF system. 10 bit 4:2:2 is tempting, but I see no reason the next generation of mirrorless cameras from all the big players won't all feature this.

The price of the Z7 compares to the Sony a99 ii and A7R III, not the A7 iii. The only reason for someone to own a Z7 would be if they already owned a Nikon system and had a collection of lenses. Otherwise if starting fresh, Sony has a collection of mirrorless lenses and Nikon does not.
