I will have more details about my Nikon Z8 experience in the coming days and weeks. This is a long-term purchase for me and will be my primary camera. You can check out my galleries here: www.thephotographyhobbyist.com
I'll upload various sample photos to my Z8 gallery as soon as I have time to get out and shoot more: www.thephotographyhobbyist.com/CAMERAGEAR/Nikon-Z8-Gallery/ I have a short day trip coming up May 29 (2023) and a big trip to Spain/Italy the last two weeks of June. Until then, I'll upload various samples from around where I live.
Congrats 👏👏👏 I'm also looking forward to get one selling my Z6ii. The weight bothers me a bit.Since i had a D850 which i loved most ,I'm very much tempted to get a Z8 🤞 Any way glad for you 😀 I often check your galleries & its really nice. I helped me to finalize my decision to by a Z 24-200 as my general purpose lens & doesn't regret the purchase. Its literally glued to my Z6ii even if i have few Z primes,70-200,14-30 etc.Its a joy to use & very handy for travels, videos etc as well. Keep clicking & updating your galleries. Thanks you ❤🙏
Thank you. I appreciate it! Yes, the 24-200 is a wonderful lens and perfect for an all-in-one travel lens. I sacrificed losing a little reach on the telephoto end by deciding on the 24-120 as my travel lens, but the reach is usually enough at 120 and if I wanted a little more, can shoot at 120mm in crop (DX) mode and still get around 20 MP files and have a simulated focal length of 180mm.
@@ThePhotographyHobbyist Glad to know that & I had similar thoughts about Z24-120 and was thinking about getting it along with Z8 as a bundle. But, I had an F 24-120 I loved it but found that sometimes ,in certain situations, the bokeh i was getting at 120mm wasn't good enough. With 24-200 I could zoom in a bit to get a bit more pleasing blur. I have gone through most of the flickr images taken with Z24-120 and while i liked the overall performance of the lens bokeh seems to be bit busy especially with busy backgrounds. What you you think about the same ? IMHO Nikon non-Z lenses have the bokeh & lens characteristics similar to F-mount lenses & the emphasis is not too much on sharpness & other things & thus not clinically perfect as S-line lens.Though i absolutely love my S-line lenses,I equally love my 24-200 & love the images that comes out of 40mm,28mm,26mm,Dx 12-28,18-140 etc too. In fact, currently I'm going through your galleries of 24-120S & F-28-300. After a recent trip & using 24-200 most of the time, i really wished Nikon made a Z28-300 or even better a Z24-300 which is as good as the 24-200. If possible , bit lighter & compact too like 24-300.If so , it would make a great travel kit along with 14-30 or 17-28 & a prime or two if needed.
@@pramodvijayasimhan 24-120 bokeh...I think it mostly depends on how close the subject is and how far away the background is from the subject. It's true you can get more blue with the 24-200 in some cases since a 'longer' lens (more telephoto) naturally gives you shallower depth of field, but I still prefer the 24-120 overall. If Nikon made a 24-200 that was similar in build and optical quality (but the 24-200 is already great) and with a constant f/4, I'd be interested in that.
Congrats on the purchase! I was lucky enough to get a Z8 myself from a local shop as well! On the setting spot metering to a function button, there is actually a way to do it but it is different than on the z7 II. I also used this on my Z7 II and was glad to find out how. To do it, when setting up F2, under the "press" section, located the "recall shooting functions", and select that by hitting OK, then it will give you the option to choose all kinds of settings. To only do spot, remove the check on everything but metering then highlight metering and hit the SET (right direction on selector) select spot with OK then hit the menu to choose done. Works well, and kinda nice to have a more expanded option of shooting functions if you'd ever want to do more than just temp metering. I am finding a bit of a learning curve of the Z8 menu over the Z7 II, definitely more robust features. I am just glad for the help icon on the screen seems to be there whenever I need it.
Ah! Thanks. I'll go try that out. I assumed there had to be some less obvious way to do that, but hadn't had time to check or ask anyone about it yet. Thanks for chiming in. Enjoy your new Z8 also :)
Awesome, happy to help you out. For the most part I feel the interface is fairly intuitive, but with the complexity of options available on Z8/Z9, it does get quite complicated at times in the menu. I have to always remind myself, ok...are there any control indicators at the bottom of the screen... often those lead me down the right path. I will be curious to see how this camera develops over time with possible firmware. It is quite the power house straight out of the box on launch day.
@@Honkus The Z8 does a lot more than I need it to do, but I appreciate that it does all the basic things I need so well and that there is room to grow if I ever need some of the more advanced functions in video and so on. It's the simple things that make me happy, like reliable continuous AF/tracking and the red box that appears around the screen when recording video :) Nice touch.
Congratulations on the new purchase! I switched from Nikon to Sony a year back, but never warmed up with Sony. I would attribute mainly to Skin colors. You ever felt that? Thinking of switching back to nikon.
Thank you. I wasn't fond of the Sony colors back in the a6000 days (which I owned) but by the time the a7R3 came along, it looked OK to me. Shooting raw, I realize any colors can be changed easily in post processing, but I like to start out with colors I already like in Lightroom when I apply the 'Standard' profile to my raw files (camera matching profiles) and I tend to prefer Nikon colors in that scenario.
Thank you :) And yes, it had to go to fund the Z8. I came away with money leftover though. So that's good. I probably should have waited to see if the rumors about the Z8 were true or not before making that decision back then (to get a X-H2), but it worked out OK. The Z8 will be easier for me to live with overall (editing, no x-trans files, etc). These Z8 High Efficiency* raw files are great. A 14 bit full res raw file is around 31 MB. So far I'm not seeing any difference in image quality between a normal lossless compressed raw. I tend not to really beat my files to death in editing though. Still, that's a nice file size savings.
Thanks. The strap is a Peak Design 'Slide'. This is the large (wide) one they sell. They have smaller (not as wide) straps for smaller cameras also: www.peakdesign.com/products/slide One thing I really like about these straps is that they are 'slick' and slide easily on your shirt (I wear it diagonal across my chest) and they are long enough to wear in that fashion. Traditional straps meant to be worn around the neck are not long enough to sling like I wear it (it's more secure from theft and falling off when you put it across your chest/back diagonally). The only thing I don't like about these is the metal buckle. You have to be careful when you store your camera because of that. Don't let the buckles sit next to your camera or lenses. Remove the strap (it's quick) or position it in a way that it won't rub on the camera/lenses.
Hey thanks for being so descriptive. The standard Nikon strap are ok, but I can’t wear it around my neck for too long. The Z8 sounds amazing. Would love to get it at some point. The Z9 and the 85mm 1.2 combo is incredible. Fast and accurate. Hey keep shooting and have a good weekend!!
@@TFM3234 Thanks and you're welcome :) I quit wearing a strap around my neck years ago, after getting earlier version of this strap from Peak Design. It's so much more comfortable to wear it diagonally (like walking around all day on vacation with the camera)
Visibly, to my eyes, I can't notice any difference. If you look at DXO and Photons to Photos (websites), they show the Z9 (and I'm sure the Z8 also) has just a little less dynamic range and a little worse high ISO quality, but it's so close, to me it doesn't matter. It's practically the same and firmly in the 'close enough' category. Z9 / Z8 close enough to the Z7 II and also D850. www.photonstophotos.net/Charts/PDR.htm#Nikon%20Z%207II,Nikon%20Z%209 www.dxomark.com/Cameras/Compare/Side-by-side/Nikon-Z7II-versus-Nikon-Z9___1361_1378
No. It wouldn’t have been financially feasible to have both of these cameras. I sold the X-H2 to help find the Z8 purchase. The X-H2 is a great camera though.
@@Moriningland The shooting info and playback info do shift when the camera is moved to a vertical/portrait orientation so you can read the text. It's sort of like how Fujifilm started doing it awhile back. Makes it a lot easier to review photos/info and see shooting data. Nikon also mentions this functionality in one of their videos. I can't remember which one, but I remember seeing them discuss it. P.S. Just to be even more clear, the MENUS don't rotate when the camera is vertical. The menus will always be horizontal from what I can see. But when you're shooting or playing back photos vertically, all the info on the screen flips so you can read it.
@@Moriningland I just edited my last comment. No, not the menus...just the shooting info (while shooting) and the playback info while in playback mode. Menus always stay horizontal. Sorry for any confusion. onlinemanual.nikonimglib.com/z8/en/sum_auto_rotate_info_display_guid-80358223-15d1-a6f4-c782-f1eb79ebc225_283.html
Just give you some advice, what’s going to happen is the buckles the middle part will hit the screen and break it ,just a matter of time so be careful!
I'm always super careful about how I store the camera in the bag with this strap exactly for that reason (the metal buckles). I even emailed Peak Design today asking if they have any plans to make one without any metal buckles or any other pieces that will scratch.
Oh trust me, I'm not that outgoing. I'll be in the background taking 'sniper' shots with the 24-120 or Z 105mm macro lens. It'll just be some fun practice for me and my new Z8 but if I get something they like too, that's great. I'm not a people photographer by any stretch and there's no chance I'll be stealing anyone's job/money when it comes to photos. :)
True :) Q3? No way...too $$$ and I prefer a DSLR style body. I admit though, it would be fun to have a small FF Leica and a couple nice lenses, but I have no interest in overpaying for the name and design. I have no issues with Leica, but it's just not something I'd be willing to pay for unless I was filthy rich and didn't care about money.
Ein Kamera seine Ware Wert in seine Leistug zeigt. Kann diese Kamere fotos und Filme Machen solche Bilder genug gesehen aber Keine in der Lage RU-vid seine leistug zeigt sehr schade für Folower.
es tut mir leid...It was only available for sale as of yesterday. I'm sure many others will post in-depth reviews in the coming weeks that shows the performance of the Z8 (if you've seen many reviews of the Z9, then you've already seen many reviews of the Z8 because it's essentially the same camera except for minor differences and more chance for overheating in the Z8 due to the smaller body). For my RU-vid channel, I'm not a professional reviewer and only do photography as a hobby, so I don't have the expertise to test some of the features in a professional setting...but I do try to provide some useful info and also just share my thoughts, if helps anyone.
