My photo galleries are here (Zf photos will come as soon as I have time to get out more and shoot): www.thephotographyhobbyist.com/ Once I get time to shoot, I'll upload my Zf sample photos here: www.thephotographyhobbyist.co... By the way, a NEF raw file from this camera using 'High Efficiency*' is only around 17MB ! Crazy! :-)

What would you prefer to take on a Europe trip Fujifilm X-T5 or Nikon Zf?? I’m invested in the Nikon line but always curious about trying the Fujifilm X-T5. Great insight thanks for the content 👍.

I'm assuming money isn't an issue, regarding your question. If you're only asking about what camera I would prefer on a vacation and the choices were only the Nikon Zf and a Fuji APS-C camera body of some type, I would probably pick the Zf, but ONLY if the X-T5 was my only other choice. The reasons are, if I already had full frame (FX) Z mount lenses from Nikon (I assume you do), then I'd be more comfortable using a system I already know and don't need anything extra for (Nikon). HOWEVER, if you said my choices were the Zf and the Fuji X-H2, I would pick the X-H2 because it's an outstanding camera for performance, has more resolution and is more comfortable (ergonomics).

Interesting video. Thank you. Many of your "objectives" compare to mine but I am questioning my own "understandings." My hair is gray like yours. "In the day" it was all about the balance between aperture (DOF) and shutter speed (subject speed generally and camera movement and subject speed with telephoto.) In the film era, if you had a top tier lens, Kodachrome 25 and 64 were a hoot if you had the light for them. In B&W, faster films meant more grain, especially if you started to "push" in the darkroom. Those days are gone. There is no plausible justification for "SLR" in 2024. The tech was specific to film: a mirror to see what the lens sees. We now get that right off the chip. Smaller cameras can be more capable and smaller. Shouldn't great chips render "ISO" tertiary in the aperture / shutter speed / ISO mix? I can SEE depth of filed change with aperture . I can see shutter speeds designed to let water flow or cause hummingbird wings to freeze. With a Nikon Z7ii, Z8 or Z9, ISO changes are far harder to detect even at the 6400 range. I believe technology is to the point that ISO should never interest me as I balance aperture and shutter speed. Why would I ever use Aperture or Shutter speed priority when I can set both to my heart's content and make it work with "Auto ISO"? If I am shooting at f8 or below with a shutter speed to match or exceed the focal focal length of my lens, and I think "it's not THAT dark" can a camera's auto ISO make the shot work in post-processing? What is the Zf? Is it lighter? Is its internal stabilization so good that it can make shots work at such low speeds a higher ISO cannot fix without discernible grain? Internal stabilization is all the rage. It has no impact on subject stabilization. I am on a "modern kick." Is the Zf small enough to take full advantage of mirrorless? Is ISO noise limited enough to give me image quality I have no right to expect at F5.6 and 1/60?

The reason I like to keep the ISO as low as possible is not because of the noise I've get at 6400 for example, but the fact that as ISO increases, dynamic range decreases. If I'm in a lower light situation where there are brighter highlights and very dark shadows in the scene, I want to keep as much dynamic range as possible to have less of an abrupt change in the areas of the photo where highlights and shadows meet better exposed areas because I don't normally like an overly contrasty image (which is easier to get with less dynamic range. I'm not one of those 'the sky must never be blown out and I must never lose any detail in the shadows' type of person, but I like to start out with the best base image I can. I normally don't go crazy with editing, so it's not extremely important, but that's what I like to do (keep the ISO as low as I can for DR purposes, which of course also depends on the scene and if I need to freeze action or not...which would affect my shutter speed which then affects my ISO which then affects how much DR there is - it's a chain reaction 🙂).

Unless someone is an absolute, full-time, career-based, 6-digit income professional photographer, there is NO need to spend all the extra money on a new mirrorless system. I had been under the impression that I HAD to have one, to replace my SLR and DSLRs that I've acquired UNTIL I started looking into image quality vs cost. Once I thoroughly did that, I wound up buying a used Pentax 645Z medium format camera with 2 AF lenses, and for less money than a new "Pro" level Nikon, and never looked back, even after being a Nikon pro and devotee since 1977. The difference in image quality blew me away. As much as I love my Nikons and Nikkors, I am never going back to 35mm, even though I am now retired many years.

True, there are many ways to look at this and today, many different systems/options that are more affordable and have the same or even better image quality in some cases. I would argue a camera like the Z8 is probably the best all around camera on the market right now regarding size, image quality, performance (speed + AF/tracking) and the cost is still reasonable, assuming it's a long-term purchase. The Z8 for me is a long-term purchase for me (5+ years?) but the Zf is one that will stay with me as long as I want to use it (maybe a few years, not sure). Anyway, there are so many good choices in 2024, including used cameras. This was not the case for example back in 2008 when DSLRs were king. Now we have used D850s on the market, used MF cameras like you mentioned, etc, etc. Tons of choices. Photography for me is a hobby and I tend to switch around more than other people, but I enjoy the technology and the art of photography. I'd recommend everyone do what's best for them (not what I do) and what fits their budget and intentions.

YOU DONT BACK BUTTON FOCUS? AMATEUR! LOL!
@ThePhotographyHobbyist

I use two buttons to focus (one at a time). Just depends on my mood...and if I want exposure locked before or after recomposing) ;-) Besides, what does back button focusing have to do with me using AF-C + 3D Tracking (assuming that's why you said this)?
