He declined offers from NBA because he would lose the right to play for national team Greece. That is an additional reason why the Greeks love and admire this great athlete.
The best European player ever. He was a modern type of shooter and his movements and jumpers never had any European player till this day. He was a real god from Olympus with great Greek heart and soul. Love from Serbia.

USSR was the most dominant force during the 80s and seemed almost invincible at that era. They claimed gold in eurobasket 1981 and 1985, World champions in 1982 and Olympic Gold medalists in 1988. Also they were second in Worldbasket 1986 (behind USA), third in Eurobasket 1983 and didn't participate in the Olympics of 1984. This team as you said trully bowed down to Galis. No other player during the 80s made them bow down like Galis did in 1987 and 1989.

@@chrispelt I agree, and as a Panionios fan I was lucky to see Giannakis play for us together with Fanis and Henry Turner... I remember the Aris fans did not treat Giannakis very nicely at all when he left, I hope more people are like you these days

Against Yugoslavia he had a great one also, and actually he had 10s of performances that were truly amazing. So many times in Greek league he would not lose basket. From 4,5,5.5 meters from the basket he was like connected to the basket.

he clearly doesn't need to find 'his spots' or requires space for 'his form'...he doesn't care where he is (will use the glass with finesse) or what hand is needed or how long he has to pump fake the ball in midair to get it around tall arms...He is simply scoring, and will cook you up and down with his drive (avg 30+ points across 8 consecutive games in a row). Obviously pound for pound best at basketball.

There would have been another Celtics dynasty (this is a very old conclusion of Greek basketball fans). Galis wasn't playing defence in Europe but it would have been different with the Celtics. The man was an amateur boxer before taking seriously on basketball and he's still training. In fact, boxing pretty much explains his amazing footwork. An amazing athlete.
Don't forget the context! That USSR team was the team that only 9 months earlier had claimed the Gold in the Olympics of Seoul. They were a true superpower. On top of that Galis beat them practically on his own and he did that NOT on Greek soil. I am just saying that because I often come across ridiculous comments about Galis dominating in only one tournament in his career and because he was playing at home. Its like people don't know anything about him. It's like Galis didn't have 40 or 50 points games literally in every tough court in Europe (Yad Eliyahu, Palau Blaugrana, Split, Milan, Limoges etc). It is like for them he was not 8 times fisrt scorer in Euroleague, 4 times in Eurobasket and 1 in Worldbasket. They are so ignorant that they think Galis dominated only in 1987 when in reality he was dominating up to 37 years old in 1994 when he essentialy retired.
Βλέποντας τα στατιστικά στο τέλος του βίντεο αναρωτιέμαι πως κερδίσαμε αυτό το ματς. 54% τρίποντο οι Σοβιετικοί! Βασικά σε όλες τις κατηγορίες είναι καλύτεροι εκτός απ τις βολές και τα λάθη (έχουν 3 περισσότερα). Μεγάλη διαφορά και στα ριμπάουντ, με τους Σοβιετικούς να έχουν 11 περισσότερα.
Ο λόγος λέγεται Νικ Γκάλης και πολύ καλή άμυνα τηρουμένων των αναλογιών και πρώτιστα ο Φασούλας. Ο Φασούλας ήταν ο μόνος που μπορούσε να ματσάρει τους μεγάλους ψηλούς αντιπαλούς μας στην Ευρώπη. Στην περίπτωση του Σαμπόνις, τόσο που να μην κάνει πάρτυ, αν και οι πόντοι και τα ριμπάουντ που πήρε ο Άρβιντας ήταν στατιστικά μεγάλου παιχνιδιού. Με την Γιουγκοσλαβία του Ντίβατς, Ράτζα και Βράνκοβιτς ο Φασούλας πάλι καλά πήγε, αλλά αυτοί με τις πάσες και τους πόντους του Ντράζεν (κάπου 28 π. και 11 ασ. στον τελικό) και εντός έδρας τύχη δεν υπήρχε. Ο Γκάλης βέβαια 30 τους έβαλε και αυτούς.
Yugoslavs were very lucky in 1989. In 1987 and 1989 we had the best basketball player in the world and the best National team at least in Europe 🇬🇷 . We won the World Champions in the semi final which should be the final game.

For Galis was just another day in his gob. 1st scorer in any Eurobasket (1983-1991) and World Cup (1986), the only who was won Oscar in scoring (+30 points).
He was playing every second day for 40 minutes straight against legends of european basketball like Sabonis, Marciulionis, Kurtinaitis, Petrovic, Divac, Kukoc, Rigaudeu etc, noone managed to stop him. Which one of the overpaid, one dimentional so called superstars of today's european basketball do you think would do a better job than them?
he would be able to do everything he wanted on the court...especially with current rules which restrict the defenders he would be a nightmare for the opposing teams.....
