Nile Rodgers Keynote Interview @ IMS Ibiza 2012
/ internationalmusicsummit
/ imsibiza
IMS devoted 60 minutes to the life story of legendary producer Nile
Rodgers - we could (and should) have let them talk for days. It was an
emotional interview with Pete Tong, complete with guitar, comments about
Daft Punk, Donna Summer and electronic music today with people leaving the room in tears.

Listening to Nile's stories are amazing. The funk style music did not last for one year, nor did Nile's hits. His style and playing does not mean he was only disco. Disco is jazz guys making records at a particular time in history. Play some disco tunes and you'll, know, hey we are playing cool jazz chord runs and everyone is dancing in front. Listen to him first, without judging. He is an inspiring legend, and a great humble teacher. Thanks for posting this and all of his other interviews.

Noticed a lot of commenters on here think that's his everyday guitar. I've never seen him play a squire until now. He usually has his "Hitmaker" Strat with him that sounds heavenly. Surprised to see him playing the Squire. Wonder why he didn't have the Hitmaker or something better.

I remember buying the first singles and album in London when I was a a teenager and the Disco age was in full swing and was just blown away. Followed their career from now till then and so great that a new generation is now homing in on the sound which has been so influential. Fantastic live too. Legend!

The reason the "diana" album was so misunderstood by hardcore Diana Ross fans is that it followed her platinum "The Boss" album....which remains beloved by Diana Ross fans to this day. In fact, hardcore Diana fans didn't go head over heels for "Endless Love". Well, Billboard just declared "Endless Love", 30 yrs later as the biggest duet of all time. The "diana/Chic" album sold 10 mil internationally!

I don't know why, but Nile said "cult of personality", the riff from "Cult of Personality" popped into my mind.

Great, inspiring interview (well, listening to Nile talk! Pete didn't really have to do much).. What a lovely bloke - so open, funny and full of life. Actually found the rude record he refers to when talking about why they changed the original lyrics to Le Freak, "Stickball", worth a listen!

has anyone noticed that he's playing a squire? i'm pretty sure it's had some "tune-up" done to it but the fact that it's a squire, wow!

That's the legendary Pete Tong, in his own way as much a part of history as Nile is - do look him up - also he helped start IMS that Nile's a guest of here - most of all he's a wonderful encourager - if you make a dance record send it to him - he may just play it!

Trust me Nile and Bernard would have been big with or without DJ's but it did help...Pete Tong does Music so i do not hate him,i just know for a fact in the major city's that started dance music Chi-Town,Detroit,NYC etc....nobody even considers remotely important...Thats a fact......

People tend to get carried away with fancy, high-priced gear. You wind up thinking that the "better" your guitar, the better you'll sound. In fact, the better your technique and interpretation, the better you'll sound.

I don't think that's a fair statement Steve. I think people forget that there has always been more mediocre musicians than good ones. There were equivalents of Bieber back in Nile's day as well. There is still great music being made. Nile is a great guy.

hmm .. so i take it you may not be pete's biggest fan! .. that's okay .. but some people LOVE pete .. and have spent much of their lives listening to him, many of whom i suspect may not know who nile is .. the thing is without djs like pete there would be no nile .. listen to what he says in every interview he does .. how the djs gave chic their start by played their tracks .. but hey, hate if you like! hate can be good! without hate we wouldn't have le freak! and now wouldn't that be sad!

@11:17 "...we concentrated on making the best music possible." Where the heck has this philosophy gone? Nowadays, in R&B anyway, they concentrate on putting together the best image possible. The music is clearly secondary.

Hahaha ok a legend where in the U.K ? Europe ? and trust me he is no where near as important as what Niles & Bernard Edwards accomplished so i wont even start a debate about that.He has not produced anything that even comes close to being Major,he promoted a few bands/clubs/radio and magazine shit he was not in Detroit originating or in NYC shaking the 7-'s 80's scene,he did not create a thing called house like Chi-town cats did.He is kinda like a Andy Warhol famous for a few small contributions
