Yeah an editor would help for sure. He has a style but it can be emulated and he’d have the final sign off to adjust it before posting. Even if it was just providing a storyboard or outline for someone to grab useable clips from the raw footage so he could piece together the final cut. Relinquishing some control of part of the process would free up more time to focus on doing what he enjoys.

To me it just sounds like a problem with fulfillment in general, not any one medium or video from. I think that the points he brings up are more about hin feeling like he's done everything he wanted to, and doesn't know where to go next. I've got ADHD, so I always start a project and get very invested, usually on one specific ideo or thing I want to create, then once that thing is done and optimized as much as I can get it, the drive just fizzles out in a way, and now I've got a mini CNC, a ton of electronics stuff, and don't feel like I have a reason to keep using them. Maybe that's what he's feeling, and just doesn't know how to explain it? Could also be I'm projecting, but who really knows lol

I get it Nile. I just graduated with chemistry and your videos were an amazing help to me. Most of my research was done with inorganic chem but seeing your videos opens me up to different procedures that I wouldn’t know otherwise. Like your arogell video was amazing because in pchem classes we discussed supercritical fluids but not much application. And knowing that there exists a use for sc co2 led me to learn that it’s used to dissolve caffeine from coffee without using dcm. And I also get that these are long. My senior labs were just one thing. Like my senior orgo lab was “synthesis this biphenol” where we had to do the research and find the procedure ourselves and provide proof of the product. And that took all semester. Or my instrumental lab was quantifying how much of an ingredient was used to synthesis a sauce

I noticed it on the first Michael podcast, too. Will asked Michael if he felt that his videos were getting longer and more complex because he felt like he had to outdo himself. Michael said no, not really. And I realized that the question was pretty specific and probably how Will was feeling, especially with the hindsight after he took a break. However, I would like to add that the questions still drag out a further explanation and lead to a more in depth discussion, it just happens to be clear that he's asking those questions to other people in an attempt to question himself.

Thank you, shorts are terrible, even when you install an extension that lets you pause and scroll through the video for a certain part it's still bothersome. The worst thing to happen to youtube in years is the dislike removal, but shorts aren't far off. Just make the videos in a normal aspect ratio and slightly longer, short videos are fine, that isn't the issue. The issues are having zero control over the video playback, the way they auto play and how it shoves other peoples completely unrelated terrible shorts into your face with no real proper rightside video recommendations, having to dig to bring up the comments. It's making people trying to fit their video within the time restriction, rather than a video naturally having the runtime it needed to properly show something off, but that doesn't mean it has to be long videos, just make them a couple of minutes long.

I totally get why nilered is taking his break, aside from money he wants to enjoy the process as well. I think a good analogy I can think of is like completing a college degree you start off with having something you want to do or don’t have any idea what to do, then once you’ve got one or a lot of things you enjoy/passionate about/have genuine interest in you work towards that goal; but your stuck with a class or something related to your major that doesn’t interest you or isn’t as fun especially if your over working yourself burns you out. So you take a break from school like a gap year or a semester off to reset, and ironically there is some similarities for me; but it’s more so that I needed a break. I hope to see him get back into it at some point.

to me, nigel's struggle is what every artist goes through. we pick up new mediums or try different forms of creation (not unlike longer form content vs. shorts etc.) and we go through a period of being enamored with the new one, almost just because it's different than the old one. and then, inevitably, we find gripes about the medium and either struggle through them, go back to an older form, or find something new. i think his opinions about all the different types of content aren't really as conflicting as he makes them seem, once you realize that you're allowed to dislike multiple things at once! it seems to me like he's experiencing a level of burnout and i hope he takes some time to find new inspiration and joy in creation again :o)

I am a huge fan of Nigel's longer NileRed videos and fully appreciate that they have every major step of, e.g., a synthesis, if that's what's being done. Safer things I actually like to reproduce from the videos as a huge educator, and for things I'll never do I still appreciate the lack of smoke and mirrors and "here's one I made earlier" moments. Getting an appreciation of the labour, equipment and yield inefficiencies for the steps is part of the benefit of watching them, as well as the results. NileRed videos really hit a sweet spot at conveying what is really needed for a long project without unnecessary dithering and becoming unnecessarily long. Other chemistry channels that have covered similar projects have generally either spent way too long on rambling intros, shopping and equipment setup or just focused on the bangs and not shown nearly enough to understand how to do it. Some of NileRed are already possibly the best educational chemistry videos in existence, even compared to paid curriculum resources, and they could totally be sold as such to home educators or schools. Keep the formula and make them when you get sufficient inspiration. I personally would be really excited to see forays into biochemistry.

But you’re still gonna make Nile Red shorts? I just wanna make sure I understand, genuinely. Whatever you wanna do, I enjoy watching your content, but I don’t want you to sacrifice your sanity or mental health. If you need to take a break, or you need to experiment to see what allows you to make your content in a way that is both healthy for you, but also satisfying for your process, then do what you need to do. This comment got extremely long all of a sudden. All I wanted to say was keep up the good work and take the time to relax and recharge your creativity if needed. The world needs the type of content you guys make. I'm hoping to see a colab with all four of you. A huge project of some sort that stretches over several videos that involves elements of all the different things you guys do. A video with you guys trying Nigell's hot sauce and TP Moonshine would be great to. Ok, I think I'm done now. Have a nice weekend guys. Regards from Norway.

same tbh, i only ever have motivation for things if it's interesting or if I'm in full on panic mode. Too bad that the panic mode usually gives me only half the time i need to do the project, or the chore or whatever.

I will add, I personally enjoy the meticulous step by step simply because I fell in love with chemistry during my first year as a mechanical engineering student. So, unlike a large majority of viewers, I tend to have a basic understanding of all the chemical processes happening.

Please for the love of god stop giving Nigel bad advice. His videos are great because it shows as much of the process as possible. Here's right that seeing him chop up the gloves or dissolve the toilet paper is the best part of the video, so definitely don't cut out those kinds of steps.

It's sad. I love his main channel, it's inspirational, even though I'm not a chemist. It just gives out that vibe of confidence, persistence and scientific approach, that gives me a bit of motivation to do something myself, be it writing code or grinding an achievement in video game. The shorts I just don't watch, this content type is not really interesting to me and is really bad for my already challenging ADHD. I would rather watch a two hour long 20-step synthesis, of which I would understand 20% at most, than a hundred of short videos like "did you know this cool reaction existed", which are easy to digest but ultimately pointless to me.

I have watched Nilered for years! And it's his presentation of the process and how he covers what he's doing that i appreciate. Nile's videos could be hours long and i would still watch them to learn. But do what you enjoy man. Those are the videos that shine, the projects that get you excited. You can hear it in your voice and the way you describe the process as compared to the ones you're not that into. But i personally think the length of the video is irrelevant because you make content for ppl who appreciate chemistry. Don't forget why you started doing it in the first place. Your talent is amazing!

I have had a lot of conversations where I was in a similar position as Nigel about finding a personal solution to a problem. People see it as a very practical solution when they suggest an answer, and it generally is. The problem to me is just that I am looking for a solution that works for me and satisfies my expectations. That way I can proceed knowing I have a decided workflow that is personally satisfactory and will stay that way. I don’t know anything particularly about video editing, but I work with some other digital media stuff like music production and graphic arts. That production hell process has actually put me off of making any music whatsoever. I find it very depressing and anxiety inducing. I tried organizing my workflow, changing the process, and taking more healthy breaks. If anything, the distance has been more like a giveaway that I just do not enjoy making music at all or anything related to it. In fact, I see it as a threat to my mental health. I’ve started working on graphic arts stuff again instead and it is more enjoyable and not as stressful, I just sank so much energy, time, and money into music production because I had such a passion for it and now it is gone as far as I can tell. I know it is pretty pointless to put all this out there, but the whole struggle of content creation and what happens outside of the viewer/listener/whatever is very intimidating. Sometimes things all of you say here or there catch my attention because they remind me of things that I have experienced in my own way. Good podcast. 😁

I've taken just enough chemistry to watch knowing how much is happening behind the scenes with the experiments in those little clips and that alone made me realize that these videos must be tedious and exhausting. On that end, I've had sympathy for Nigel for years. But I don't watch with a youtuber brain and realize how much editing goes into it, too.

For NileRed's videos, I think showing as much of the process as possible is what makes his channel such an awesome thing. Even if you don't understand it, it gives you room to learn about things you don't understand, even if it's only a little bit.
