Always a pleasure to watch a modern automatic lathe working. However I really miss the authentic grating & carving sounds from the operating tools. Its so common to find these videos with any kind of "fancy" music, which destroys the pleasure of watching.

It's very cool to get to see one of these run with the doors open and no coolant running. We run 4 N40 machines where I work to manufacture axles. But due to safety issues we must keep the doors closed. We do it all, from forging raw material to finished axle, all in one facility.
@nsh-usa
@nsh-usa 7 лет назад
Four n40s! What shop are you in? And yes, while the doors definitely keep chips + coolant contained, they certainly obstruct the action. For more recent shoots, I've been using GoPros. Thanks for checking out the video!

That was pretty safe...when you can move within 0.005mm it either clears the jaws or crashes on the jaws! Turning so close to the jaws though can sometimes give you problem with chip formation and evacuation, typically ending with a slash of chips going for your face on manual machines...

Interesting. When I worked at ACF Industries, the Wheel and Axle shop received the axles pre-machined, but oversize. They were then turned close to size in regular lathes, then ground in a Landis centerless grinder, before being pressed into the wheels. The semi-finished axles came into the plant on a flat car, in banded stacks. The wheels came in similar to the same, where they were bored and the OD turned, if need be, in two vertical boring mills, gauged, then sent to the wheel press. That was in the old Huntington plant, so I'm not sure what they do in Arkansas now. Before working there, and after, I sold large fab equipment, and I was the Pandjiris rep for the Ohio valley area at the time (Ohio, Kentucky, and West Virginia). Pandjiris is who made the car rotators, welding seamers, welding gantries, etc. I was a repair rep for the old NCG burning machines, too, and sold Detroit Hoist hoists and cranes.

Такая чистота поверхности и глубина реза достигаются за счет невероятной жесткости станка? Как этого добиваются? Почему не применялось охлаждение?
@nsh-usa

Да, жесткость станка является ключевым фактором, но также и выбор вкладышей, а также наша долгая история инноваций в станкостроении. Это похожая история с отсутствием охлаждающей жидкости. Спасибо за просмотр видео!

im curious, dont the rollers get damaged if a chip gets in between them and the workpiece? is there some sourt of air barrier?
@nsh-usa
@nsh-usa 8 лет назад
+middlemanclayton1 As I mentioned elsewhere in the comments to +Pete Rohr, those steady rest rollers are part of the CNC programming, and thus they move with the work piece and do not intersect with the cutting tools. Thanks for checking out the video! Hope you checked out some others while you were on our channel.
@bigp4218
@bigp4218 6 лет назад
Yes the rollers can get damaged by swarf chips as can the workpiece. Normally flood coolant will help guard against this.
@stevenmassey7586
@stevenmassey7586 5 лет назад
Perhaps air dispersal,i believe no coolant is used to prevent hot and cold spots from damaging the forging process during removal of large amounts of material.

@nsh-usa
@nsh-usa 8 лет назад
+Pete Rohr Those steady rest rollers are part of the CNC programming, and thus they move with the work piece and do not intersect with the cutting tools. As you can see at about 1:41, the motion of the turning also pushes aside the few chips that do pile up.
@willmcgowan25

Nope, its not. This machine only makes shafts (see how the turrents have like only 8 tools?). The toolchanges happen when the turrents aren't in use, like during loading of the next piece. It changes tools to replace worn inserts, not because it needs to switch another tool type (like how some CNC lathes have 200 tool magazines - this is not the case - those lathes do more complex operations so they need all those tools).
