Recorded live at rehearsals in Los Angeles. From a series of performances directed by Rob Sheridan, available on The Slip Limited Edition CD/DVD: theslip.nin.com...
+U WOT huh really? How so? I always thought discipline was one of the most kinda "mainstream-ish" songs of NIN because the studio version doesn't have crazy sounds like the downward spiral does.
discipline sounds like mainstream because it's a pop style song just as the hand that feeds... I rather listening to the most dark stuff NIN produced, like the original mastering of The Downward Spiral. very intense
Trent captures the instant regret of an addict while still feeling the energy of what he's on. The battle of sobriety and abuse. Amazing way of making art
I always thought this song was about a toxic relationship where the line between BDSM and abuse is constantly crossed and redefined. I actually joked with some friends a few years ago that this was the song that should have been covered for the 50 Shades movies.
@@tatehildyard5332 exactly. He's in a BDSM relationship that's running off the rails with limits and boundaries disappearing and he's scared sh!tless about where it's leading. "I want your discipline, I need your help" to try to bring it back under control. Best BDSM song since The Velvet Underground's Venus in Furs.
@@malcolmstreet1 It can mean many things. Especially when we have a topic of interest we can slot it into frame with any connection. For example I am obsessed with Hitler/The Nazis (in a historic and psychological point of view, not a Neo Nazi one. Fuck that noise) so I interpret it as being from a Hitler Youth boy reflecting on his role in the Reich and actually stopping to question what makes it and its Fuhrer so great. Same could be said about an officer in Stalin's USSR. Someone else thought it was from the POV of a toddler having a tantrum which is quite a literal and clever way to see it. I think any interpretation is right (I can relate to the addict one) but I think to call it the "best" is a bit strong. Perhaps its one of the best about abuse masquerading as something healthy (like BDSM)
Josh Freese has probably the best resumé of any drummer around. He's played with the Vandals, Guns N' Roses, A Perfect Circle, NIИ, Devo, Weezer, the Offspring, and now with Foo Fighters. That's quite a prolific career and that doesn't even include the stuff he's done as a session drummer lol
Exactly what I was just thinking. Popped in here since I haven't watched since this came out. I remember being pretty hyped. Now I'm looking at it like fuck that's what 10 years looks like? Lol
i literally found NIN this year and i am 16 but im absolutely obsessed i think i've listened to almost every album or at least a couple songs from each also im in love with Robin's hair
All of the NIN albums fit with my different moods, it's crazy. I know what album to listen to based on how I feel that day and I'm always comforted and feel less alone afterward.
I've had a life-long battle with depression, and can't think of an album that speaks/shouts to me more completely than The Downward Spiral. That said I have to be careful when I play it - like some Joy Division material (another band I love) it can be too close to the bone if I'm in a bad way :-(
Am I still tough enough? Feels like I'm wearing down (down down down down) Is my viciousness losing ground (ground ground ground ground) Am I taking too much? Did I cross the line? (line line) I need my role in this Very clearly defined I need your discipline I need your help I need your discipline You know once I start I cannot help myself Now it's starting up Feels like I'm losing touch Nothing matters to me Nothing matters as much I see you left a mark Up and down the skin (skin skin) I don't know where I end Or where you begin I need your discipline I need your help I need your discipline You know once I start I cannot help myself I cannot stop myself Once I start I cannot stop myself And you know Once I start I cannot stop myself And you know Once I start I cannot stop myself And you know Once I start I cannot stop myself And you know Once I start I cannot stop myself I need your discipline And you know I need your help Once I start I cannot stop myself I need your discipline And you know Because once I start I cannot stop myself I need your discipline And you know I need your help Once I start I cannot stop myself I need your discipline And you know Because once I start I cannot stop myself And you know Once I start I cannot stop myself And you know Once I start I cannot stop myself I need your discipline And you know Once I start I cannot stop myself I need your discipline And you know Cannot stop myself Once I start I cannot stop myself
Where's the Midnight Club in Los Angeles? I go to Boardner's on "Wednezdayz" and they play a fair amount of Nine Inch Nails but I've never heard of the Midnight Club? Is it a Goth/Industrial Club? What night of the week there is best music?
A Swedish theme park? You mean like with roller coasters and stuff? In Sweden? Was he even playing a show in town that week or something? Because it would be so random if he wasn't even playing a show out there on tour but felt the need to go all the way across the more than half of the world on a twelve hour flight where its relatively freezing and there is such a limited amount of sunlight in the day just to go on throw up rides? Dang!? Stockholm must have some seriously sweet rides to have to go all the way out there for them?!
the perfect song to go back to bad habits, after been a long time without tasting or feeling. only to hear his voice ... it's hard not to have that feeling
I listen to this song every day... going to take a while for me to get sick of it... it's just so fucking orignal & refreshing. The piano is amazing & Trent is a musical God... amazing singer.
2x? Bummer, I spent most of the 90s chasing NIN around. I lost count, I like the old stuff better, still adore Trent, but it seems hes trying to hard. I love that hes sober tho
I never get tired of rewatching this. Just great band energy, and the way they're just nodding along to the music as they're in the zone just shows a real appreciation for the tune.
One of the best, cant stop listening it. I also first heared it in old racing game - Midnight Club LA - that even more strange, so good music in just one title?
You cant beat that great straight head simplistic lead that creates an atmosphere of mis-controlled cahos! The beats are frigging amazing with Bass and Drums just kicking layer after layer / orchestration to the Max. Then that "clean" vocal strap ... Damn. Can you spell P r O d U C t I o N! Awesome
I’ll never forget the first time I heard this song. The Slip had just been announced/released on my 18th birthday (May 5 2008), and I got pulled over for speeding while listening to this song after school. So worth it. That memory, and all the times I’ve seen it played live since then, will live in my brain forever. I even got the artwork for “Demon Seed” tattooed on my arm when I saw them at Red Rocks in 2018. What an incredible, extremely underplayed album. Bonus shoutouts to Meathead for his music video.
Incredible band!! Great musicians!! Incredible groove of Josh Freese. I love it!! Robin is the guitar boss!! great pick sound!! I like to see RME in your harware to use with vsti's!!! Best wishes from Spain. Un saludo enorme desde España!!
i can’t say for certain but i’d bet it’s a Devi Ever Bit Mangler. i know it was used pretty heavily on Ghosts, so it’s in the nine inch nails wheelhouse. i’ve also got one myself and it’s very possible to get a tone just like that out of it
