and don't forget Herman Brood, Dutch rock singer. She had a short relation with him and did a movie and album with Herman, both called 'Cha Cha'. In the movie she 'married' Herman Brood, not in real life. Lene Lovich is also in the movie.
She's an artist, she has explained more than a few times that people expect her to behave in a certain way because of her fame etc. I know this from first hand experience..I'm a painter and I put on a little bit of an act at times..and you know what? people like that, but Nina is so normal and polite if you watch her family documentaries. It's showmanship. Freddie Mercury had it in abundance but was actually quite a shy person offstage,,,,I met him when I was road crew at the Glasgow Apollo...he was so shy he couldn't do more than say , one two, one two...with all the roadies sitting in the front row, then he walked offstage...didn't sing a note.
@@TheBobbymcd I didn't mean "more art than music" in a bad way, but to refer a bit about what you said... well, I think she often crossed the line between eccentric and crazy. I guess you remember her famous tv appearance talking about alliens.
nina hagen was professionally trained in opera. a lot of punk female singers came from this same background too, like poly styrene, or to a lesser extent siouxsie sioux who used operatic vocals but was never trained. nina hagen, at her peak, sung in a recorded 6.2 octaves (mariah, as a comparison, sings in 5), and i believe nina's low notes are actually lower on the scale than her highs are high as opposed to most female vocalists who can sing higher than they can low, although this is mostly due to the fact that nina's voice has become extremely damaged and yet she still continues to produce music. in vocal studies, there are four recognized registers. the highest register is known as the "whistle" register (which is what mariah is famous for) and the lowest register is known as the "fry" register, both of which nina was able to sing in at her peak. now, almost all of her vocals are in the "fry" register due to her damaged voice.
If you check out her cover of Seemann (originally by Rammstein), you'll hear her use her lower register in outstanding ways! Nina is known for both her higher register AND lower register. Her vocal range and control is out of this world!
Love Nina Hagen. Her albums "Unbehagen" and "NoneSexMonkRock" were seminal moments in my musical journey. I saw her live in London in the late eighties and she was phenomenal. You should listen to her version of "Ziggy Played Guitar". Surprisingly amazing discovery, JP, and I haven't even heard your review - I am posting this during the first minute of the song. Keep on doing what you do!
@@nomi.hagen. thanks for requesting it..I discovered her as soon as she made her first album by sheer luck, listening to a uk radio dj called John Peel. Iv'e forgotten the number of people who have been in my home and been blown away when I play her.
Ugh. She is literally my idol. I love the way she dances and the expressions she makes. Her voice is like this powerhouse that manages to power so much emotion and love. 🖤

Nina Hagen was quite the thing in Europe in the 80's... (it's Hagen with an open A). When I worked in a record store, we categorized her as Avant garde. Very heady, very complicated and very high quality. Never really actually listened to her, because she is German, and my family was somewhat apprehensive about Germans.
Hey, JP! Thank you so so so much for reacting to Nina Hagen. There are almost no reactions of her music here in RU-vid and as you said her talent is insane, otherworldly and she has an extensive and quite varied discography. She has released rock, pop, funk, opera, hip hop, new jack swing, big band, jazz, folk, gospel, reggae and even Hindu mantras. I would definitely love to see you reacting to more of her music. You can react to anything from her NunSexMonkRock (or even do an album reaction) since that is her magnum opus. African Reggae, My Way, Habanera (live from Tokyo 1986, specifically), Hold Me, Ave Maria, New York New York (which is her biggest hit), Zarah, her version of Seemann, you name it.
@@nomi.hagen. I like some of her later songs too: "New York New York", but preferably in German (I hate it when she sings in English). Lorelei is another great tune. "Zarah", another great one.
Nina Hagen is fully trained Opera vocalist and was supposed to be paraded as showcase for the socialist GDR (East Germany). On one of her first concert of her opera collective in West-Germany she able to escape and asked political asylum. She became the forefront of radical musical change in Germany that led into the German new wave music style. Everything until that time was traditional "Schlager music". I was a teenager at the time and totally uninterested in this kind music. Then my sister advised me to take listen to Nina Hagen. So I put it on expecting nothing special, but i immediately fell in love with the record and bought it myself the next day. The whole album is fantastic and is still one of my favorite albums. One of her most beautiful songs is "Der Spinner (the lunatic/dreamer)". It is difficult to describe the beauty of the song, like with so many of her songs but, it are the details of the pictures that make it work. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fxHSbstAUYs.html
Unbehagen and Nunsexmonkrock.. Two of her early albums that's really good... Tracks like African Reggae and "Wie leben immer… noch (Lucky Number)", Smackjack, Future is Now.... would be other great starting points... its a wild ride for sure...

Nina Hagen has been my favorite singer for decades. You've really GOTTA see the video of her doing this one, Live onstage. Her portfolio is enormous, but I'd get into, "Nunsexmonkrock" next. {Song, "Born In Xixax" really kicks ass!} Also album, "Fearless", which includes a very historically early rap song, "I Love Paul".
That woke me up... wow. Still no coffee; I’ll just play this every morning. I’ve heard of her, of course, knew she was strange and arty rock but, like you, never saw opera slapping me in the face. Nobody saw this coming, no one. Totally do more. Enjoyed, as always, Stay strong and healthy, Peace and Music
Try 'Unbeschreiblich Weiblich' from the same album for a wake-up song... It'll get you into gear so fast you'll arrive at work half an hour before you got out of bed ;)
WOW! I was surprised, when i saw Nina in your Video-List and had to check it immediately!! No one can hold a candle to her!!! IMHO She is an absolute Legend!
Love Nina Hagen Band and also Hagen´s later solo stuff, check out their song "Heiss" and "Smack Jack" and also "1985 Exctasy Drive" from Nina´s solo album In Exctasy.
Naturtrane is Nina Hagen behaving. See her use her full vocal abilities in "Future is now" - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BX1ALpaxS80.html
Nona Hagen is unique and an absolute legend. New York, New York is amazing, as is that whole album, actually. Hard to find these days, but well worth the hunt.
Nina is a vocal phenomenon. Her first few releases were fantastic. But I felt that in the 80s, she became a bit of a novelty item. Always a joy to listen to and WATCH!! But I wish she had the songwriting power of Kate Bush or Bjork. But Nina is ....Nina!!! How can we not love her?
Nina Hagen has a great voice, and her first album is a real gem.. If you are curious you can watch her 1978 Rockpalast performance on RU-vid (Rockpalast is a German TV-series that is broadcast at irregular intervals and always features some rock band or artist live on stage). ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VdsPft_uaNg.html The name for the kind of voice you are seeking is not "whistle voice" but "head voice". The other kind of voice is the so-called "chest voice". And guess what you get when you quickly change back and forth between head voice and chest voice? You get yodeling!
Nina Hagen. (Ha-gen, use a short a for an ahhh sound). She is imaginative, crazy, weird, never boring and never uncommitted. So cool. She doesnt do anything accidentally. I love the song "I'm my own radio"
You have to try the album "Nunsexmonkrock" Oh my god she does amazing things with her voice. That album is just about entirely in English. Pick any song off that album and it's a unique experience. "Nunsexmonkrock" is the bomb! It is hard to pick a song specifically since so many cool things happen on the album. I guess "Future is Now" might be a good song to start with, but you'll want to hear this entire album.
I was 14 when I got this LP and first listening to her 1979 was a revelation. I can't tell how much I listened to this LP. Not as often now, but still sometimes. Her first concert on German TV was cool and nothing we had ever seen before. It's on youtube Nina Hagen live at Rockpalast ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VdsPft_uaNg.html
@@Doupyourflies Yeah, but I want him to get into something different first. On Twitter I just recommend him Mylene Farmer which I have been listening all these past months and became in love of the whole thing she does.
This was interesting. I’m only familiar with her new wavey dance club song called “ New York New York”which was a minor hit on alternative radio in the early 80s. The difference in that song is she uses a guttural like delivery. You should check out Lene Lovich who is a similar artist.
Guy. Nina is soo big in Europe. If you want to tract to her famous Rammstein cover „Seemann“ - keep in mind, that she is till today one of the only persons who was allowed to do a Rammstein cover at all. She is als the world wide godmother of punk. (Please react/hear to this very special „Seemann“ cover of her. It’s one of her best songs at this age for a woman)
If you like rock-opera like Nina, check out Edson Cordeiro. Not only does he do a cover of this song, Naturtraene, on his debut, but also mash-up between the Magic Flute aria, 'Queen of the Night', with the Rolling Stones 'Satisfaction'. Its sung as a duet with a female rocker singing the Rolling Stones male vocals, and he doing the female opera. Its quite electrifying.
Man your good at what your doing Jp! Open mind, insight and curiosity. I never ever heard of that women and now because of your channel i can say i discover an all new talent. Thank you for this Jp.
Thank you for reviewing this recommendation. This is her only song I know where she used a technique like this. I always thought it was a parody on people who pretend to be artists but have nothing to offer but showing off. So the lyrics may not really make sense and the articulation is over the top. Unfortunately after the success of the album something went wrong between her ears. The band had to release a second album because of their contract but the other members refused to work again with her. So the band recorded their part and she recorded the vocals after the band had left the studio. The album was entitled "Unbehagen" what means discomfort and was a reference to her name and the feelings of the band for each other. Afterwards the other members worked together under the name of "Spliff" and were very successful in Germany. But they refused for years to work with a singer, with any singer. In 2004 the keyboarder Reinhold Heil was responsable for the soundtrack of the Hilary Swank movie "Iron Jawed Angels". I bought this album when it came out without knowing what to expect just because of the cover. I shared my palace with some other guys who gave the album the title of "Record of the Year". The album starts with a cover of "White Punks On Dope" by "The Tubes" what btw made these better known in Germany. "Naturträne" is my favourite because of the vocal artistry. But I still really like the whole album not only because of the music but also because of some of her very provocative lyrics especially "Pank" a germanized spelling of "Punk". 104 seconds of raw power. Beside that the band shows in some songs that they can create atmosphere not only noise esp. "Der Spinner" and "Auf'm Friedhof". Nina never reached the quality of that album again. "Spliff" could not come to this special quality, too. But on this album literally everything went together and even if a great band can keep their level as musicians it makes a difference if you miss such a singer. The album is near to my selection of the 10 for the island. Nevertheless Nina is just a great singer with a giant lot of options and so she had been engaged by various artists as a guest. Perhaps her work with the Finnish cellometal group "Apocalyptica" covering "Seemann" by "Rammstein" could be interesting. "The Queen Of The Night": I am far away from being an expert when it comes to opera. But I heard and read that one of the best versions currently available is done by Diana Damrau not only because of her great voice and the brillant technique but also for being very angry with her daughter instead of only singing about it. I compared her versions with some others on yt and as far as I can judge it it is true. In opposite to most opera singers she has some acting skills, too. And since an opera is not only the music it might be a good idea to listen and to watch : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JzFi-7H9TKs.html Everybody stay healthy.
The way you build your procedure of commenting is great. Thanks for the review. And yes , I wish I'd been born 10 years sooner if that meant I'd been able to know this lady and her band in their prime. Thank you very much. Still, it's fun to research to finally know too.
That was kind of brave from you to do Nina Hagen. She had a trained opera voice. You should do Smack Jack (at best with video). The whole 3rd album is pure insanity.
I am so glad to see a positive reaction to Nina Hagen (pronounced like in Hagen-Daz). The band broke from Nina after the 2nd album "Unbehagen" (a play on her name. It is German for "Ill at Ease"). The band went on under the name of Spliff and did a few albums. Some of my favorite songs are "Born in Xixax", "I love Paul", "Don't Kill the Animals" ft. Lene Lovich, "Russian Reggae", "Fieber" ft. Oomph, "My Sweet Lord", "Return of the Mother", "Hand Grenade", "So Bad". I also saw her in concert in 1985. She was fantastic.
The thing is, Nina Hagen acualley is talened, but she made her way in beeing well, strange..., different... It´s between art and not takeing your self too serious... There were some strange bands, playing there stuff as a kind of joke, but she was the most extream.
Nina Hagen had obviously a classically trained voice as an opera singer and equally obvious in the end didn't feel much like making a career of it ;) This album is a classic, the lyrics are hilarious as well.
@@Metabolinisticoespialidoso THANKS 4 THE LINK MAN ! 👍 😃 not actually what the song is about but sure is powerful enough 4 it ! one of if not THE prettiest song I ever heard
I find Nina Hagen a fascinating sort of back alley underground café artiste although I only know one of her albums ~ Nun Sex Monk Rock, a piece on that called Future Is Now being a big favorite.
Saw her in concert in the 80'. I loved her albums but was disapointed by the concert that lasted only 40 minutes. She was an ovni in that period. Wonderfull songs and a voice like no other. But I wouldn't have chosen that song to start. The whole album is excellent, even if I prefer her second “unbehagen" with a song like African reggae or Hermann ist hinuber, which are much more rock. And the lyrics are great too. Concerning the range of her vocals, you should listen to Yma Sumac, a singer from the 50' and 60'. She was crazy too !!! The band behind her was exceptionnal too. She does humor with her vocals, mixing opera to make fun of it and in the reverse making fun of the rock too.
Nina Hagen reportedly has a 7&1/2 octave voice,, I would suggest the songs Zarah or Iki Maska or her version of somewhere over the rainbow also similar in the weirdness factor ever heard of Klaus Nomi or my favorite in this style Lene Lovich
Wow! I'm so glad you reviewed and heard. Nina Hagen! I've been a fan of hers since the early 1980s. If you get the chance and time, check out her song " Der Wind hat mir ein Leid erzaehlt" ( The wind told me a song).
Manny would probably excuse himself and say he has to go walk the dog ( I don't think he has a dog , btw - lol ) But Justin would hang in there all the way thru and extract everything creative and cool that it offers . Still love Manny for his counterpoint comments though . Hey Manny and Justin both got goose bumps listening to Firth of Fifth at least
Jerry Petrillo In my experience higher notes are painful to pets when they’re in the same room as the singer, even when they’re sung extremely well. Their ears are too sensitive to handle the high frequencies plus volume. If I played this on speakers up loud I bet my cats would bolt! It’s too late here to test it. I know from my own singing what they can handle. I found this: “Do High Frequencies Make Dogs Uncomfortable? Canine ears are more sensitive than human ears. ... Dogs typically can detect sounds between 67-45,000 Hz, while humans can detect sounds between 64-23,000. In the upper frequencies of a dog's hearing range, the sounds can cause a dog irritation and discomfort.” dogcare.dailypuppy.com/high-frequencies-make-dogs-uncomfortable-6339.html When dogs howl it’s at lower pitches and it’s like a genetic call of the wild! The pitches that trigger howls don’t hurt their ears. They probably do like it!
Cathy Wood When I had my keyboard rack set up I would experiment a lot with my synthesizers and Hammond B3 organ - I found that very high sustained notes would get my dachshund to bark and sing whereas my cats reacted by becoming more affectionate. On the flip side , very low sustained bass tones barely affected the dog but made the cats annoyed / angry
Never heard this, and I'm of an age. I will follow up on this band's LPs. By the way, Most "reaction" videos remind me of The Chris Farley Show (of SNL fame). "Yeah, you remember when you were in the Beatles? Yeah that was awesome." (end of analysis.) Yours goes into more nuance of 'why' something is awesome. I appreciate that.
She and Joy Fleming HAD the best Rock Pop Jazz Vocals in Germany. I recommend you the Joy Fleming Song "Ein Lied kann eine Brücke sein" (a Eurovision Entry for Germany). That was a very pop one - but she sung it so great. Yes Nina Hagen I recommend you NunSexMonKRock and her Album Fearless.
She was scary back then, but always around. She has a vocal range of 4 I think and she can actually sing as a normal person too. :) Which you can see in other songs. Absolutely one of the strongest singers from the day, but Kate Bush kicks her ass. Haha! Cloudbusting anyone? :)
You have to watch Nina perform in order to fully appreciate her greatness. Not only is she stunningly good, but hilarious as well. You should REALLY check this out: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-v-YzdvmD2aQ.html And ESPECIALLY this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PjY501O8hGU.html Nina reminds me of a rock version of Yma Sumac.
I relistened this, to remember your reaction, Justin (no I'm not obsessed!). You definitively should listen to African Reggae from Nina Hagen. One of her most well-known song, but also one where she shows all her vocal skills, and one of the best musically from her band (in fact the whole Unbehagen album is a good one). But this one Naturträne is very good too…
I must admit I came to your channel because of Genesis (and Rush). If you’re looking for other bands, I suggest three : Paramore (I’d start with (Part II - from Self Titled album); Cocteau Twins ( I’d start with Pitch the Baby - from the Heaven or Las Vegas album); and Massive Attack (I’d start with the song Protection (with Tracy Thorn from Everything But the Girl on vocals) from Massive Attack’s Protection LP.) Three amazing bands.
Ok JP....IF you can Nina Hagen..you can do Laurie Anderson! C'mon man! Take the plunge. "O'Superman" or "Let x=x"...or heck...And if you can do Nina Hagen you can do Adrian Belew...And most assuredly, if you can do Nina Hagen, you can do Ultravox...
I have seen her performing with her husband Herman Brood. You must check Herman Brood & His Wild Romance - Saturday Night. I love your comment and Nina Hagen is top of the bill.
She's a little bit mad - but then all the best people are. Grew up in East Germany, and her folks managed to "legally defect" to the West (I think). I seem to remember she was a child prodigy who appeared on stage and TV from a young age (in the East) -- OK I see you got that (commenting as you speak :-) ) Surname is "HAH-gen". An "a" with an umlaut (ä) is pretty much like the "ay" in "hay"; an unadorned "a" is always as in English "father". I think the song name means "Tears of Nature", but I may be wrong. OK you've seen that. Watch the live version linked to by another viewer, here, and it looks like there's some kind of heavy irony behind it. (A hint of which comes from mentioning that her nose is freezing alongside words akin to "the bruised sky of eventide".) I don't know entirely what to make of it. And I actually prefer to leave it that way. Beautiful music mixed up with sarcasm about that beauty. How pleasantly disturbing.
How could I forget?! She did a "cover" of *The Tubes* - *White Punks on Dope* - greatest wild song ever, which you have to Watch: (here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rs9wuaVV33I.html) . Watch it; it's a party! (And I think this song might be related to White Dopes on Punk - a rumour I've heard).
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JWzPcDtZZZo.html And here's *TV Glotzer* (about someone in the East who glotzes TeeFau all day). Nina used The Tubes tune, but made her own lyrics.
Ya, you're doing good :) Nina's band first 2 albums contains more than a handful of great moments. I prefer Auf'm Friedhof (if you have the opportunity, check the original, studio version, one of the more powerfull vocalizations I've heard...). Stay safe PS: BTW, I suggest you better pass without digital classifications like genres and other labeling, often (much of the times) erroneous and misleading...
