She wrote this after the Alabama Church bombing in 1963 where four young black girls died. Nina Simone was a brave and strong woman who will always be remembered for fighting for what was right.

Never heard this!!! How brave she was to sing about WHAT was happening WHEN it was happening. This is a real woman; strength through her talent and her words. Another thing missing in music today. I can think of some female "artists" who should see this and re-evaluate what and how they put out there.

I've heard her music but never seen video; it adds a different dimension to the piece in its' entirety. Note how she presents herself: Impeccably dressed, straight- backed & smiling as she takes her bow before exiting. Compared with some of todays' female singers? There is none. Class cannot be bought.

oh man, it's such a f-ing tragedy that Nina Simone is so frequently left of the list of artists whose music powered the civil rights movement. She was a powerhouse and 100% in the mix. Look for "To be young gifted & black" and "I wish I knew (How it would feel to be free)" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vq3sdF0YXkM.html

Wow the part about Sister Sadie I didn't understand...(so I googled it) "Sister Sadie was a character in Mark Twain's book "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn." Sadie, the wife of a runaway slave, was a cook and a healer -- a stereotypical strong Black woman who kept her pain, anger and frustration to herself and didn't talk back. Nina Simone would never be a Sister Sadie."

Nina was in deep with the civil rights movement. Things were changing very quickly. A saying by those who agreed with equality but were afraid of the change would often say "slow down" if you read a lot of Malcom X, Martin Luther King, etc. people of the time you'll hear references to this and arguments why they shouldn't be going "slow". So in this song Nina turns it around and says "too slow" and she lists off the reasons why.

Singing about the years just before I was born and a bit afterward - this song was written the year I was born. HEADS UP: Texas tried to slip in a history school book that claimed the slaves were more like indentured servants and they received pay, room & board, and that they were HAPPY. When a young black student brought the book home and his black mother saw it, she demanded a response, and the school said, "Oops" and they had all the books collected up and returned and got better history books. Keep your eyes open for these shenanigans. But, schools in the south, Florida, in particular, are on a big censorship campaign and they want everything THEY consider to be Critical Race Theory (which doesn't exist in public grade school and public high school) to be tossed out and banned. No mention of Martin Luther King, Jr. or the Civil Rights Movement because they don't want their little white children to feel bad or guilty over the past. They want to erase parts of American History, including the Civil Rights Era and the Sexual Revolution that freed gays from the closet and led to marriage equality. The biggest cancel culture IS the Republican Party. If you still want to vote Repugnicant, you should know, they want to take away your Medicare and Social Security. Look it up! Donald Trump said in a televised interview, they would have to get rid of Social Security. The poverty, deaths, homelessness of the elderly and disabled (who earned their Social Security) would be commonplace in America, and none of these people would be living independently as many do now. The Republican dominated "Supreme Court [Extreme Court is more like it] has already taken away the right to privacy, and they plan on taking away much more... No one is safe from this rogue Sup.Ct. and everyone must vote these Republicans out, and Trump must pay for his many crimes, but mostly for an attempted coup. This is a really powerful song, and as Republicans try to take us back to the 1950s (when the GOP was far more liberal), this song may once again be poignant in the present day. God Bless - Everyone is Created the Same and is entitled to the Same Rights and Privileges.

She wrote this about the bombing that killed four black girls in Birmingham. And the assassination of Medgar Evers. Listen to Dylan's "Pawn in Their Game". She was about civil rights.
@jnagarya519
@jnagarya519 3 года назад
First lines of Dylan's "Pawn In Their Game": "A bullet from the back of a bush took Medgar Evers’ blood A finger fired the trigger to his name A handle hid out in the dark A hand set the spark Two eyes took the aim Behind a man’s brain But he can’t be blamed He’s only a pawn in their game." Another on the same LP -- "The Times They Are-A Changin'" -- is "Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll" -- also based on a true story.

Best version is on her Live at Carnegie Hall album. Not to downplay other versions like this. Substitute any disreputable state or locality with a 4 syllable name, from Pennsylvania to Oklahoma to Arizona. Simone even added California and both Governor George Wallace and his wife Lurleen.

I was hooked when I first heard this 25 years ago. This time I just felt sad at all the hatred this song represented and how much is still the same. It's like August 5th, 1959 when Miles Davis was beaten by 2 cops standing in front of a marquee with his name on it then charged with assault. He was a genius at the height of his powers but for America he was just black. My brother is a Wall Street banker. In 2018, (I actually haven't seen him in years. He disgusts me) he and his buddies, including a catholic priest, suck back $200 steaks and $500 bottles of wine and they're soooooo racist

It’s too funny when people are commenting about her having “class” and saying todays singers don’t when she specifically sings about “respectability politics” and how it’s gotten her and her people nowhere. Trust me in the time they didn’t think it was “classy” to sing this song. But she didn’t let it stop her from saying what needed to be said. And now it’s like “she’s so classy.” Who cares if you’re classy? She’s singing about little girls being blown up in a church because of the color of their skin… how straight she is sitting up is NOT what she wanted us to go away and talk about. Goddamn.
