"Mississippi Goddam" is a song written and performed by American singer and pianist Nina Simone, who later announced the anthem to be her "first civil rights song".[1] The song was released on her album Nina Simone in Concert in 1964, which was based on recordings of three concerts she gave at Carnegie Hall earlier that year. The album was her first release for the Dutch label Philips Records and is indicative of the more political turn her recorded music took during this period.
Simone composed "Mississippi Goddam" in less than an hour. Together with the songs "Ain't Got No, I Got Life", "Four Women" and "To Be Young, Gifted and Black", it is one of her most famous protest songs and self-written compositions. In 2019, "Mississippi Goddam" was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Recording Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".[2]

Nina Simone is definitely someone you should check out more. There is a Netflix documentary called "What Happened, Miss Simone?” that is worth watching. Her songs Feeling Good and I Put a Spell on You are some of my favorite songs of all time. This song is everything but you’re right, it’s hard to listen to often.

Nina Simone is the real deal. Her "Feeling Good" is an anthem. Her version of "I Put A Spell On You" is top notch for torchiness. "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" from 1964 also deserves your attention. Compare it with the version released by The Animals. And check out her cover of "Nobody's Fault But Mine" from 1968 and then compare it with Led Zeppelin's version from 1976. Or go deep with her 1966 cover of "Wild Is The Wind" and then compare it with David Bowie's version from 1976.

Nina Simone was a trained concert pianist. She wrote that song. Her voice, music is so relevant these days! This song was one that concert payers never wanted her to sing, especially to white audiences. She sang it anyway!

She was undoubtedly titled "The High Priestess of Soul." You should check out "Feeling Good" and "I Put A Spell On You."

One of the greatest performers ever! This performance, I Loves You Porgy live, and her whole Montreux Jazz Festival set are all 🔥 As someone else mentioned, I also recommend the documentary of her life, "What Happened, Miss Simone?” She lived a truly fascinating life.

Brilliant song, brilliant performance! You could see the frustration on her face, hear it in her voice, and could even feel it in the way she played keys.

She got a rousing response from a crowd of white folks, this was around '63 or '64, Nina Simone was a major talent and a genius performer. Get some of her CDs and you'll be doin' it smart.
