My best friends parents were on one of the planes that had to land at Gander, to this day they give thanks to all the people who looked after them. That list was extensive from the traffic controllers landing plane after plane. the airport staff, bus drivers, truckers who brought in the food, the people who left their homes miles and miles away to give help even to those who just listened to the plane peoples stories.

On the darkest day in 2001, a bright light shone out of Gander, and showed the world that on the day we saw the worst of humanity, we also saw the best of humanity as well.

Makes me very proud to be Canadian, but Newfoundlanders still take hospitality to the next level. These thousands of people were all foreigners but treated as family, not as a potential threat. "It needed to be done. We just do what needs to be done and get on with it". The most wonderful people in the world in my opinion.

As a Canadian- you should be proud. As an American- we leaned on you- and Newfouland didn't even consider doing less that what they could.

I agree. My ancestors landed in Newfoundland, and were welcomed, I was so glad to see that spirit wasn’t lost.

Translation of the Hallmark card: “Hello friends, It takes fateful confusions to meet friends you would never have met in life otherwise. Thank you for everything! We feel that today we have to leave our family. But our respect and gratitude are deeply etched. They are indelible. Sincerely …”

What the Ganda community did for the plane people really shows how great people the Canadians are. Salute to Canada ❤

I'm proud to say that personally know some of the folks that "just got on with it" on that day and the days to come . Though I am not a Newfoundlander by birth I have many friends that are , I have never felt more welcomed anywhere else. Folks that are from " away" see this outpouring of care and hospitality as a miracle . To some extent that may hold true . Newfoundlanders have always had to pull together in times of adversity , decades of living in isolated communities have taught them that . It is ingrained into the very fabric of their souls. Having all these folks " drop in" is like a few more guests for Sunday dinner " mother, throw a few more potatoes in the pot we have company for dinner" God bless Newfoundland and all that come off her .

I like the way all the blanket were folded perfectly on the cots. It goes to prove the only way to get respect is to earn it.

When I was growing up in Newfoundland, we didn’t have much but we had hard workers, kind people, and old fashioned practices, and orderliness. A lot of change has happened. Not quite like this now.

Now we would have people saying we can't be forced to go to Canada, I have my rights- to heck with the big picture. Stupidity along with misinformation is abundant in 2021

I love that they wrote men's and women signs in German. I know these people they are simple but very smart. They will only let you portray how they really are, or else lol.

You are so correct. Might not sound smart, because of old fashioned ways lingered longer than the rest of Canada. The capability is evident when pen goes to paper, or hand to hammer, etc. People thought we were backward.

This is the first time that I've experienced Newfoundlanders not being portrayed as stupid backwards people. The rest of Canada has always looked down on us. It's sad that it took a tragedy like this and strangers from away to showcase what we're really made of.

Fantastisches Video!

Did he say the internet was cheaper than a phone call!?!?!?
@makmcdermott
@makmcdermott 2 года назад
Leo - in 2001 - making a long-distance phone call on a land line was more expensive than it is today and cellphone plans would rarely work out of country. Letting people connect their laptops directly to the computer network in the school via ethernet (there was no wifi then) was significantly cheaper.
@Teh_Random_Canadian
@Teh_Random_Canadian 2 года назад
Not sure how old you are but back in 2001 in Canada long distance calls would be .50 cents a minute easily. International calls are much more per minute. The internet wasn't massively established as it is now. Most people had email accounts but is wasn't the norm for communication, neither was text based messaging.
