I love Nine Inch Nails. I'm also a Dave Matthews Band devotee. There are a few shows where they added backup singers, Dave introduced them as "The Lovely Ladies" and of course then their proper names. So when I re-re-re-re-re-watch this NIN performance, I surely appreciate the "Lovely Ladies."
I just want to let Trent and the band know how thankful I am for you. I suffer from mental illness and am currently going through a med change. Nothing was helping the headache and sharp pains in my head until I listened to "right where it belongs". Your music has helped me through so much, has pulled me out of bad cycles, has given me something to relate to and not feel so alone and literally saved my life. I can't thank you enough and am so grateful for your lifes work. Thank you for creatively sharing your experiences. Not sure where I would be without you...🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
I relate to your comment so much. I'm Autistic with OCD and NIN.saved me. I'm on meds. But the strongest med is music especially NIN. I saw them in Cornwall and was crying at the end
You've both missed the point of the song. He's an alcoholic ( so am I) and when you're in your disease you become two versions of yourself. The original and the addict. In this song he's commenting on how he's lost his original self and is increasingly just operating in his character defects (addict ) version.. The yell at the end is his expressed frustration with not knowing who he is anymore.
All these years later I still get that shiver I got seeing this tour live. The background singers made such a huge difference to all the old track it was like a completely different NIN
Nine Inch Nails has a unique way of blowing you away with their live versions of songs. They sound so intricate on the album, and you wonder how they could play it live, and they go above and beyond expectations. This is an example of that very concept.
This is one of the best bridges Mr.Reznor brought ever to the table. Simple, yet the build-up is so awesome I could listen to it in a never-ending loop. Hesitation Marks is a great record, it takes time until it reveals itself, but it was a time of beautiful discoveries. Can't wait for Everything live, cmon Trent, maybe just once. :)
what I find truly inspiring about Trent is that he's gone through a lot of rough phases and has come out on top, even better than before. even after he's found his happy place, he still has that incredible anger in his music. love this song~
+BurnTheCatalyst Agreed! I grew up with the NIN sound going waaaay back and I guess I was in very much the same place he used to be, as we get older and mature we grow to find better outlets to express how we feel about the bigger issues, Hesitation Marks was great because it felt like an album true to the heart of a man who had finally overcome his demons, yet.. does not ignore what they were or if they still crop up now and then :)
Better then studio version, Trent is a A beast live, copy of a, satellite and this song live are great. I like that 3 song combo for 2013-2017 NIN. Trent still has talent, he is best live. Money is the root of all evil, a necessary one (still evil). It's the journey not the destination. Just be kind to other people. We all have our bad days, but have compassion for life. Lead by example. Actions speak louder then words, so be a shinning light in a dim room. Let your love guide you. Heart break is part of that, but the bitter isn't as sweet without the bitter. You need to feel pain to feel love and joy. Don't hate people, just dislike their actions. Remember your past but don't be burdned by it. Use it to fuel you. Don't run on fumes, let the love and light inside you shine. Shine like a multi-color diamond In a world full of Coal - David Grant (1985) 5/31/17 - 5:48 AM Remember Who You Are
The drums on nearly every song on the album do not smack as hard as they do live- that's kind of its biggest problem. There really is a limit to how "pristine" and wide a mix can be in rock music. NIN's production is very well known for having drums / rhythm sections that punch you in the face. Hesitation Marks as a whole criminally neglected most of its drum sounds... (in terms of the rock context.. they're mostly great for an electronic context) and also the background singers should absolutely been on the album- it's really a shame that he didn't meet them until after planning the tour. Basically, I think HM was under-funked, needed more drums, bg vox and (I wish) horns.. and it was overly mixed for the sake of clarity- which is nice for audiophiles but maybe not as cool for the music itself.
Saw and heard this song live and it was spectacular! You can really only get the full effect of when the backup singers voices hit the same harmonic tone being there in person. What was even more mind blowing was that Explosions in the Sky was the opening band, seriously, once in a lifetime concert!

Right there at the end. The band aborts (figuratively) the last round of the chorus, in heavy dramatic NIN style, and someone howls the loudest "YES!!!" from the audience. You can just barely make it out.
This song has changed my life more than any other. To it I owe the courage to let go of everything I'd ever known and search for something more. In my darkest of moments, this propelled me forward. I'm quite certain I'd be dead without it. Thank you, TR.
Im glad im not the only one. When i discovered this song last year, it got me to kick my opiate addiction. Still play it often. It seems to really be how i feel right now. "I just dont know, i just dont know" "leave them behind - you are free" "take - what you want, what you deserve'. Hopefully life gets better. Im really hoping it does.
@@jimmygebo2404 haha kratom is what i was addicted to. it went from kratom to suboxone and such. kratom is such a devil i never want to experience again. the liquid extract shots are literally just drugs. it sucked the life out of me.
When I first saw this, I was just in awe with how rhymically beautiful the back up singers sounded in that bridge. It's like they're calming you for whats about to come and then PURE CHAOS and in the midst there's a beautiful balance with their subtle oooooooooooooooo's behind Trents scream
A masterpiece that's all I can say. Straight to the top of my favorite NIN songs. My admiration towards Trent keeps on rising more and more. And look at him he looks better than ever.
Dude...! Trent you killed this track and this live performance. Thank you for the message as well. Respect man!!!! You are the only Rock Star left anymore!!!!
I keep picturing 4 personalities simultaneously taking places singing this song. 1 of rage. (Red) 1 of love. (Blue) 1 of sadness. (White) 1 of judgement. (Yellow)
So awesome. Why oh why hasn't the Tension DVD / Blu-Ray been released yet? The 90-minute stream was amazing. Even if they just release that with no extras I'd be a happy camper. Such a great tour deserves to be relived again and again!
Seduced by the light show on this one. Amazing!. Haven't heard this track before...interesting...I love the quietness and the loudness mixed together. Two polarities melded together and co-existing in this song.
Pretty Hate Machine was one of the first CDs I bought 20 years ago. Going to see them at the Hollywood Bowl for the first time in August and I CAN'T FUCKING WAIT!!!!!!
Trent Reznor is one of the moust talented and soulful artists of all time, including Stephen Stills. But these two Black women steal the stage. They are mesmerising.......
Trent Reznor has been a huge inspiration to my sobriety. July 15th 2017 and today, March 1, 2023 at 11:49¶M here in LA. This music is a life saver to me.
I've watched all of the individual ones besides even deeper and while I'm still here (because of what I saw in concert and on here they were the best) and this is the very best video yet. Bravo.
+SensualCream Both versions are awesome, but agreed- this live session is something crazy huh, what a fucking show! Love the whole soul vibe happening, very new and cool for the NIN sound :D
