Episode 53
Is Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos (known as Shadow Warriors 2 in Europe) the best game in the trilogy for the NES? It has a TON of new features that improve upon the formula that made the original so successful. The biggest new addition is the ability for the hero, Ryu Hayabusa, to split himself into two or even three parts! These Phantom Doubles follow the hero around, and mimic his movements. They'll even use your magical sub-weapons!
Ninja Gaiden 2 returns with an even darker story than the first game. One year after the defeat of The Jaquio, a new villain, Ashtar, has risen to power. He wields the titular Dark Sword of Chaos, an evil sword fashioned from a demon's bone.
Using this twisted blade, Ashtar wishes to open the Gate of Darkness, and bring an end to all mankind. Can Ryu stop him?
So how did this awesome sequel get made? In today's episode we'll find out, plus we'll dive deep into the gameplay where we'll learn:
How to beat ALL SEVEN ACTS!
The SECRET to gaining INFINITE LIVES!
Where to find every hidden SCROLL OF THE SPIRIT OF THE DRAGON!
Details about your NINJA MAGIC - Always have the right sub-weapon for every occasion!
Where to find EVERY HIDDEN 1-UP!
How to access ALL THREE SOUND TESTS! Enjoy the music!
What's hidden in EVERY POWER-UP crystal!
The SECRET to getting MORE THAN 100 MAGIC POINTS!
The best ways to use your PHANTOM DOUBLES!
How to defeat EVERY BOSS, with or without sub-weapons... even the DEMON itself!
Thanks for watching!

I should note for fellow viewers that the phantom doubles only look right at 60fps, because it flickers at that rate. At RU-vid's default 30fps, they're either solid or invisible. (just like NES sprite flicker made to get around the sprite-per-line limit)

I always interpret the NG1 bosses as common enemies as more like the bosses from the first game were just normal mooks for the Chaos Tribe. NG2 had one of the best midi soundtracks, but was certainly the easiest of anything bearing the Ninja Gaiden brand mostly due to shadow clones being OP cheese. All that's left is the ridiculously overtuned NA version of NG3 for the old school trilogy.
2 года назад
Yes, I always interpreted like that, now Ryu is that powerful that the old bosses are mere enemies. However, I think Ninja Gaiden III is way more easier, that was the first Ninja Gaided that I finished!

Thank you for covering this awesome game :). Contrary to popular belief, regarding Ninja Gaiden II being the easiest to beat from the NES trilogy, it proved to be the most challenging for me, in terms of a sword only run, as seen below: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gYJDM9JuXw8.html Since the game essentially wants the player to abuse the ninja shadows power-up, without it, Ninja Gaiden II becomes a LOT harder than the other two NES installments. I successfully completed sword only on all three Ninja Gaiden NES games and part II was definitely the hardest, with part III being a close second, due to the unforgiving Timer in Stage 7.

Luckily, i found this game again, it's in pretty bad shape, but it'll work most times all the way through. I came upon a horrible glitch this one time. The Baron Spider boss kept bouncing across a very scrambled screen and I couldn't get out of it....... And this happened around Act 7! I love the sound test cheats, especially the ones with the bars that go with the music. Now hopefully i can find parts I and III again, part III would give me back the Complete In Box value. Nice guide!

As someone who's played this game dozens of times as a kid, first of all, AWESOME video, and I love your hints on it. However, I think I have a little more accurate insight on the story of the game. I know the cutscenes are hard to interpret, not being actual anime cutscenes, but I think I picked up on a few things. Firstly, when Ashtar taunts Ryu in the Maze of Darkness, I think it's implied that Ashtar is dragging Irene through the maze just ahead of Ryu until he gets him where he needs him to be. Jaquio set up Ashtar as a puppet as part of this elaborate "contingency plan" in case he was defeated at the temple in South America (and while we're at it, I have no idea what business a Japanese demon's body has being buried in Brazil). So Ashtar is just gloating from just barely around every corner in the so-called "Maze"... not using magic or whatever. Secondly, when you defeat Ashtar, he DOES die right in front of you. He does use teleportation, but he's using it on the Sword of Chaos to send it to Jaquio, since Ashtar knows his role in the story is done at this point. Third, in Act 6, when we check on Robert and Irene, they are struggling to keep up with Ryu, and it is Irene who is huffing and out of breath, not Robert. Fourth, the demon Jashin is the "spirit released after the battle" that Jaquio is referring to in Act 7. He just needed the Sword of Chaos fully powered up to awaken it within him and become the ultimate evil. On that note, the prophecy Ashtar was speaking in Act 5 ("To the one who releases darkness with *the immortal blood* , he shall receive the power of the Almighty Evil") refers to Jaquio, who resurrected at the end of NG1 (effectively now being immortal). Ashtar and Jaquio pretty much were counting on this outcome. Lastly, I only learned this myself later in life, but Ninja Gaiden 3 takes place six months after NG1 but also six months BEFORE NG2. So... you know... she already "died" once, which should have meant that Ryu has already gone through "losing her" once already, so... yeah. I blame that on NG3 being a case of sequelitis for the franchise. :)

Thanks for the explanation here. I myself was wondering about Ashtar after his fight with Ryu (my avatar here, by the way), and as it turns out, Ashtar did manage to beckon the Sword of Chaos, it seems, to go on with the plan of releasing Darkness over the world. I always wondered, if maybe, both the Dragon Sword and Sword of Chaos were actually alive, in a sense, especially since both swords awakened either Jaquio or Irene, respectively. In any case, both swords did perish, having fulfilled any purpose for their existence, seeing there was no longer any more threat of eternal darkness overcoming the world, and Irene being resurrected as well. Anyway, great ending to the series nonetheless. Irene and Ryu do seem to be meant for one another, though they almost look more like brother and sister, rather than potential lovers, but if they got married, maybe the Dragon Clan could be revived and reborn through their union. Thanks for the input on the psychology and overall background on the game's story, as it puts things into perspective rather nicely.

I love the touch that the "Malice Four" from the first game are all common enemies in the second...

I have no interest in the game really, but the layout of this video is like a good movie. I love the intros to these games that you have written. Keep killing it buddy. This is amazing stuff.

@@brycestrife5605 i get your point. There are actually quite a few games that he's covered that I have no interest in playing but I end up loving the videos because of their quality. As a huge fan of retro gaming in general I just watch to see the history of the game and the flow of the gameplay, art and story. It's a good channel even if you're not trying to beat all these games.

20:18 - "Based on the giant 'Commodore Lizard'". You created a videogame-related portmanteau of "Komodo Dragon" and "Monitor Lizard". :D

Question is, though, does the Commodore Lizard come with a Monitor Lizard or is that a separate purchase?😁

Great playthrough and break down. One more thing worth mentioning. If you kill any of the forms and die that form is permanently dead, even if you continue. You get sent back but when you get back to the boss rush whatever forms you killed will not show up again. Makes the games much easier to deal with. It works this way for all 3 games. NG3 was the hardest for me due to the limited continues but still has that feature. NG1 was very irritating due to sending you back so far but it also saved what boss forms you killed and had infinite continues, like part 2.

This was the first (and only) game in the trilogy I ever played as a kid. I got it for a Christmas present one year. I loved it but I couldn't beat that Baron Spider boss without losing a lot of lives - the next stage always gave me a game over so that was as far as I ever got. The biggest thing I like about this game over the original is that you can climb up and down on all walls instead of just certain ones like the original.
