Nino is almost universally seen as a subpar unit however that may have been the intention all along, it's also just as likely that the game wants you to use her in spite of her shortcomings.

Cecilia doesn't suck, she is like a 6/10 unit IMO. I think people only say she sucks because she joins on a desert map and that gives a really bad first impression. I think she is like Isadora in that she is good enough to be useful but most people will find her underwhelming

What really sucks for Nino is that most of the bosses also have good RES, so her contributions as a killing machine much more muted than her other EST counterparts.

Exactly. She feels wqy more worth training that most other "better" units. Theres a reason I feel compelled to use her every single playthrough. Actually, she's pretty similar to Renault in a way. Another character that is surprisingly plot significant. Renault is more usable (even if he's also a worth Pent that joins well to late. At least he has good Staff Rank). And the hard part with him is more building Supports (a long and boring task), bur that's also the main reason you ever put him on your team to begin with.

The best part about Nino existing is that some rom hacks copy the method by giving you that unprompted LV5-10 unit with insane growths like 7 chapters before the game ends and it's just funny to me everytime

Tbf i am not sure if she count as a "bad unit" if she is optimal to use in a ranked run for the exp rank. And i mean, once you got her exp yoh may as well keep using her depending on the growths.

The difference is, Lilina actually joins fairly early into the game, and the few chapters after her join time make it easy to funnel exp into her. Due to the abundance of 1 range only axe enemies in narrow chokepoints you can abuse

This is sincerely of the best Fire Emblem videos I've watched in so so long. You did a great job with this one. I think, and this video did a great job reminding me - Nino is really the ideal Fire Emblem character. She so successfully integrated into the story that she proves exactly how you could create great compelling characters without the need of supports. And as you explain in the video, her unit identity is consistent with her narrative which actually feels like an idea in FE that isn't always fleshed out like I would want it to be, especially with now the emphasis on class changing and the general sandbox/unit customization feel the modern games are adapting.

I guess it’s kinda fun to watch an “Est” go from zero to hero in the course of like 2 or 3 chapters but at the same time it’s a real pain in the butt for a character that just mostly keeps up with the rest of the pack but isn’t significantly better or anything.

People need to remember not everyone plays on hard mode. Nino isn't actually too bad to use on normal mode and you get to see her journey from 0 to hero pretty fast with how easy it is to power level her by the time you get her. Its the same with Yunaka in engage. She actually isn't that great on hard mode when smart AI ignores units when they have 0% hit rate but in normal Yunaka can solo areas of the map for you. Edit: whoops i meant maddening, I was just focusing on how the highest difficulty, some popular units do a lot worse.

Correction : in Engage Hard Mode enemies will still attack units even if they have 0 hit or deal 0 damage , they will ignore your units only on Maddening

Florina is okay, but fliers in general got shafted in FE7. Even if you manage to keep her alive, she won't become as good as Farina. So unless you're a fan of using all three, I don't see the purpose in wasting EXP on her. I don't usually even bother with Erk after Lyn's story either because you get so many better options for magic users. Canas is mid unless you get lucky or expend valuable boosts on him. Basically a more durable Erk with dark mode enabled. Ultimately, he's too unlucky and unskilled to be very useful outside of specific circumstances. I usually keep him around as a healer and to run support offense when needed. Definitely useful, but not too much moreso than literally anyone else with a staff. Nino is literally the BEST sage in the entire game, and it's not by a thin margin. She absolutely dominates, and it only takes 2 chapters after recruitment. I'll never understand the hate. I guess people just aren't patient. Sure, her DEF sucks, but the rest of her stats are ALL above average. She can easily reach 2-3 stat caps just by leveling up. All she needs is a few defense shields and she becomes a one man militia who can be safely thrown into the trenches. She can even use physic to heal distant allies between pulverizing enemy units. Frankly, she might be the best recruitable unit in the game, period.

I think she also gets the story privilege because she is mother to both Lugh and Raigh in FE6. Both of whom are also two types of mages. But yeah, use who you want. If you have enough knowledge to use the game’s best units effectively, then the same should be said for the worst.

I think FE7 did Nino dirty. Like, everything you said is completely accurate, plus in addition, she's the last low-level unpromoted unit you get, and the only one who had nearly so many levels to make use of Afa’s drops unless you take an old unit off the bench for it.... But..... Like, even if you put in the work to train her to 20:20.... She's arguably worse than Erk since her con is SO low and it takes her so long to use any useful staves. And that's comparing her to an Erk specifically at end game, not even accounting for how long Erk has been useful and how much less difficult it was to level him. I support the idea of a unit that's a challenge to use, but the reward should be a little bit better than it is for her, at least. She's just so mid even once she's leveled. If she's gonna come that underleved, with bases that bad, she should reward you for it, and she just doesn't. But she's also a precious little cinnamon roll who we must protecc. (Side note: they could really fix that in a remake with a personal skill that gives her some unique thing she offers)

every unit is a good one if your dedicated, yeah sure afa drops make it possible to raise her, but everyone else you get early so its ok to use it on her, Nino deserves many hugs and a pat on her head and an adoption by one of the lords or Pent, she was the reason i rushed into that battle lol being a hero makes you overcome numbers and a bolting demon, i like the music you had on to, Nergal's morph's are like homunculi so its a good reference

I've never used Nino but I once trained Sofia to 20/20 in FE6 and that was enough exposure to this 'archetype' for one lifetime. Looking at stats and weapon type I actually think Sofia might be worse, the only light at the end of the tunnel is you can eventually a buy a bunch of nosferatu tomes for her which works alright on normal difficulty

I've used Nino so often and other "bad" units because I liked them. I'm more likely to not use a unit because they are popular or too good. Like Louis and Chloe for example in engage. I hate Louis now.

I wouldn't call Nino bad so much as outclassed. She comes in so late to put out a performance better than Erk and about on par with Pent (minus staff rank)... when you already have Pent to begin with and she's not THAT much better than Erk. Furthermore Priscilla exists and was likely used to have a mounted mage which means more competition. Nino works reasonably well when given effort and exp but there's just little reason to use her when her contribution is too similar to that of units you already have for no extra effort.

I think I liked using bad characters like Nino mostly for the novelty of using a bad character. Back when I was a kid all I thought was "wouldn't it be cool/funny if I maxed out this lvl 5 unit this late in the game?" I didn't care about stat growths or her back story too much, what appealed to me was her potential (and her 30 str stat cap). Hell, my favorite character in Thracia 776 was Shannam for the same reason.
