JRPGs! I used to not like playing on handhelds but I had to adapt. I noticed in recent years the amount of quality portable JRPGs has been on the rise. Continues on with the 3DS and I also need to get my hands on Vita. I'm actaully playing the 3DS version of Devil Survivor right now.
Gotta be JRPGs. There are just so many exclusives on the DS/3DS (and handhelds in general, like the PSP) that you just don't find on consoles anymore (especially SRPGs, other than Disgaea).
Wow man! I've been a viewer for 12 years now!? I now use your channel as a resource for scouring for hidden gems and unknown/forgotten games and....also nostalgia haha! I'm a 33 year old, new father of 1 and I just wanted you to know how OG you have become on RU-vid and how coveted you have become to me and my inner bubble. You are an absolute joy and a beautiful human being. That includes your circle of friends also. They are all exceptional people!
One of my favorite series on all of youtube is your hidden gem series! I am glad that your doing the ds because I don't give my ds enough love :). By the way I also recently started listing to the pod cast and I must say you guys rock! Keep up the great work man!
This video was the reason that I bought Hotel Dusk: Room 215. As soon as I saw the art style I knew I would love it, and I bought it straight away off eBay. It's now my most favourite game ever! Thank you so much!! ✨✨
Yeah, I actually live in Europe so it was quite easy for me to purchase it. Although I still prefer Hotel Dusk, Last Window was just as good! The story can be sad at times, but it's not that depressing.
I remember when the DS first came out, I thought "well, this looks nice, but once the PSP comes out, everyone's gonna forget about this console."...Boy, how wrong I was years later. It looks like history is repeating itself too, with the 3DS and the Vita.
Edit: I realize now, that I replied to a 6 year old comment. Whoops.... ____ I'd say the PSP faired pretty dang well though. Burnout, 3 full GTA games, Jak and Daxter stuff, Ratchet and Clank, the many other racing games, God of War, Tekken, the PSP exclusive Naruto fighters. I even personally had a few of the movies. And as an emulation machine with custom firmware, the PSP was fuckin bananas. DS was fun, I had it too. But I mostly remember playing Pokemon Pearl, Mario 64, and Mario Kart on it. Might have had a YuGiOh too. And they were a ton of fun...but I was never massively into the whole touch screen, dual screen gimmick. I just like having buttons and a single screen. Nothing wrong with a classic.
I completed 'Hotel Dusk: Room 215' recently. The art in that game kicks so much ass IMHO. There is a sequel called 'Last Window: The Secret of Cape West' but it only came out in Europe and Japan. :( I hope to see 'Little Red Riding Hood's Zombie BBQ' in a future video.
Contact, LEGO Battles, Bionicle Heroes, Aliens Infestation, Ghost Trick: Phanton Detective, Etrian Odyssey, Shin Megami Tensei: Stranger Journey, Disgea DS, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, Contra 4, and the Bleach/Naruto games are all great DS gems
I just found this channel and I really enjoy your content. It's really helping me with buying games. I have ds but I have only 6 games I've kept since my first ds lite in 2007. I've never played any anime or Japanese style or rpg games. I want to expand my game categories so I can experience more types of games :D
Oh lord... the memories... I played room 215 (one of my favorite games on the ds) on my purple velvet DSi... I loved that system, it took me through some really tough times, but eventually I had to sell it because I was flat broke. I've been regretting this decision ever since. I now have a black DSi, which is pretty cool, but my purple velvet beauty will always stay in my heart.
Thank you MJR! I, a ds game collector, have been waiting for you to do a Ds hidden gems video and it was great. Can't wait for parts two and three. The Ds is such a good system that this should have ten parts instead of three.
Just found your channel. Love it, and gotta say that the sole fact that you mentioned that you guys were drinking a home brewed black ipa sugarcoated it for me ^^ craftbeer+gaming!!
Hey Kinsey! I've been brewing beer for about 10 years now and I love it.. I still havent stepped up to all grain brewing though.. I do partial mash and it still comes out fantastic.. Only beers I brew are west coast american IPA's.. Those are my favorite beers.. things like bear republic racer 5 IPA , lagunitas, deschutes , rogue, stone, etc
+strocat25 yeah i use to brew till i moved to AZ>. just to hjot here to even try to brew anymore.. to hard to control the temp.. last beer i made here was during winter.. and i could only brew a hefeweizen.. my fav beer.. i grew up in the northwest.. the weather is much better suited too brewing with out having special equipment to brew ( a/c, cooling blankets for the carboy, etc.. whatever you need to do to keep your wart cool when its 115F out side.(. fun hobby tho.. and nothing beats fresh beer.. rock on.
thank you so much for introducing me to dragon quest rocket slime! i never heard of the game since it wasn't released in europe and i haven't seen it in any other nds recommended lists, but now that i got it for myself i'm having so much fun playing! great videos, keep on creating and stay awesome!
BTW, I don´t do retro except for my Megaman/X Collections and keeping the games I´ve had from previous consoles but I decided to make DS my retro console/collection. So far I´ve got over 38 games.
I've been watching retro game shows like CGR and Gamesack for a while now, and just discovered MetalJesusRocks. Being a fan of rock music and retro games puts this right up my alley. Too many gaming "shows" on youtube are from people that have a very narrow knowledge of gaming (especially gaming history). From the handful of vids I've seen of yours, I love them. Keep up the good work!
The Nintendo DS is one of my all time favorites, and an amazing system to collect for since there are so many great games for it! Fun fact: Just like the GBA SP model that you like so much, the DSi has brighter screens aswell and it's a screen of much higher quality so the colors are alot more vibrant and DS games actually looks the best on the DSi out of all the DSs. Even better than on the 3DS and 3DS XL! And Metal Jesus, it always makes me smile to see Mega Man X4 on the TV in your opening every time. One of my favorite games of all time, it's awesome that you picked that one out of all the games you could've picked! Anyway, love your show and I can't wait for Part 2! //Senkai
It's a complete reboot of the series. That and the new Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams game are reinventions to the original. The DS game can get a bit repetitive, but it's really fun and has amazing music. I had to order my copy off Amazon as it had such a low print run. But because it's so unknown, it's definitely a hidden gem.
Dongled Newegg was where it was originally being sold, and that's where a friend of mine got me my copy. He gave it to me as a birthday present and said "Now I trust you know the history of this game.".
I never played the original but I was pretty disappointed by the DS game. The controls weren't tight and the bosses and level design were all the same. Pretty dull
Awesome video, the DS is really a game I need to get into more and this is a helpful list for that for sure! I have played Nanostray and really enjoyed it, but it did kick my ass, never found a copy for myself though. Never played, or even heard of, most of the others. One to mention sometime, and I kind of suspect you will, is Dark Spire. Awesome RPG.
Metal jesus you MUST play "trauma center under the knife 1 and 2" they are my favorite games of the system and a trully masterpiece of atlus. On the other hand, you lady should play "luminous arc 1 and 2" they are the best RPG i can think of, and they were also madr by atlus!! :)
[ Recent exposure to Front Mission series brought me here ] Is Front Mission for DS notable for its value proposition? Hmm, that .... Room 215, Nanostray, Ninja Town, Retro Game Challenge and others alongside the hardware walkthrough really has me tilting my head at portable experiences - not seriously perused since early Gameboys but revived because of vids like this and the more recent builds of old consoles ( like PS2 ) built into fully outfitted portables to render original gameplay using 3D printed housings and solid state storage instead media drives.... This has definitely been some needed exposure. Thanks, Kinsey and MetalJesusRocks ! Geez, that beer looks very satisfying... now craving it or a 4-pack Guinness Foreign Extra Stout as sold here in the states ( so much better than the rest of the Guinness lineup in my area of the States )
Glory of Heracles - The first game in a Japan-only RPG franchise to be released in North America. "Average at best" is what the few people who've heard about it seem to think, but I absolutely loved it. It's one of the better RPGs I've played, with some of the best storytelling and soundtrack in an RPG. Golden Sun: Dark Dawn - Golden Sun has never been the most popular RPG franchise, but it's my favorite (although I'm still waiting on that 4th game). Dark Dawn, the 3rd game in the series, is a game many fans of the series write off as sub-par to the original 2 games, which I agree with completely. While the first 2 on the GBA were 9.5/10 material, Dark Dawn was closer to an 8/10, which is still better than many, many RPGs out there. Although the story gets incredibly interesting the further you get into the game, awkward dialogue and storytelling mixed with too-easy combat kept it from being as good as the first 2. It still has MANY amazing moments, amazing music, a convoluted but interesting and epic story (even more-so than the first 2), amazing puzzles, and one of the BEST climaxes of any game I've played. Ninja Town (which I'm so happy you guys mentioned) - I love tower defense-style games, and Ninja Town is one of the best! Phantasy Star 0 - I haven't played the other games in the Phantasy Star series, but I really liked this game, which a lot of people say is the worst in the franchise. It can get a little repetitive and annoying at times, but it's a fun little time-killer nonetheless. Teenage Zombies - I freaking hated this game, but my sister was obsessed with it back in the day, so I'll mention it. It's a strange little platformer with cutscenes shown in a comicbook style. You take control of three different zombies with different abilities to traverse the levels, getting powerups and eating the "brainmeats" of aliens who are trying to take over the world.
Hey now, I cover them there overlooked DS gems, and no one can because I say so! Still, kind of hard to believe the system is almost a decade old. Good things tend to last a long time, but still.
The DS is one of my favourite systems ever. Children of Mana was great, Mario Hoops. Also, Battles of Prince of Persia was one of the strangest entries in the PoP series, and quite decent.
Excellent video, I love your "Hidden Gem" series. I always take so much good info away. I've actually been considering picking up a Nintendo DS & 3DS. I've never played either, never really had much interest. But recently I've had this urge to start picking up some games, mainly due to the new Zelda game on the 3DS. This video has given me a lot more encouragement. Thanks MJR!
Rocket Slime is great. I mentioned it on your FB channel. I picked it up relatively recently from GameStop for like 5 dollars. I cant imagine it being that expensive elsewhere.
BkKillaful says the man with no profile picture.and before u say anything,i am actually Spiderman. This lady is cute as fuck and based on her excitement levels & interests, any dude would be lucky to have her.i can tell by your attitude,u would have no chance any way.i'd wife her anyday!
Great video and an awesome guest aswell! The combination of your taste in games is hitting my sweetspot with most of these games and I can't wait for the next one. Keep up the good work :)
5:17 Retro Game Challenge is based off of a Japanese TV show Game Center CX. The series is essentially like all those Kid's Play Retro Game videos where the main focus is the humour in watching someone struggle with how difficult these games really are. Although a few sequels were made only RGC was ever released in English. The show itself has being going strong since 2003 and is available subtitled here on RU-vid. Anyone interested in retro games should watch an episode or two just for the LOLs.
Thanks for the awesome reviews, I'm picking up at least three of these games due to this vid!!! My fave DS games have to be: Castlevania-Portrait of Ruin, Dragon Quest IV, V, VI, and IX, Radiant Historia, The Final Fantasy IV remake, And Legend of Zelda-Minish Cap. DS rules and besides the SNES, is the home of true kick ass RPGs.
kitramsey5150 My credit will never go to "shit". Who uses loans to by games? Also I'm way past the point of using credit cards. That's something kids do to help build some credit. If you're over 25 and still using a credit card, you've made some bad life choices. Now saying that, I'd totally buy all the games she wanted within my budget, which at the time is substantial. She still wifey material.
kitramsey5150 Everyone has a hobby. It's even proven people with hobbies are usually more composed and live longer lives. Seeing how she has a life outside of collecting, I don't think she's even close to being a "problem" hobbiest. I've seen grown men take off their shirts, paint themselves, put on wigs and stand in a parking lot drinking beer and screaming until they passed out because of a football game. Now that too me is much worse than a polite, well spoken women collecting video games as a hobby. I've never thought of game collecting to be a "gender specific" hobby, if anything women should excel at doing it since they are naturally better negotiators and problem solvers than men are which is handy when yardsaleing or at flea markets. As far as that last comment, son let me tell you, coming from someone who owns his own business, has an amazing kid that just turned 4 a couple weeks ago and still has a great relationship with my ex, his mom, that "make me a sandwich" attitude will get you nowhere. My parents have been together for 30 years, best couple I've ever seen and if my dad now or ever before had walked into the house and told my mother to "shut up and make me a sandwich", she would have hit him in the head with a frying pan and left his ass. If you want a "make me a sandwich" girl, if you can even find one, then that's your decision, but I promise you any relationship like that isn't love and is honestly the biggest waste of a life I can think of.
kitramsey5150 I'm not saying a woman can do anything a man can better, I'm just saying it's perfectly fine for women to collect games, or anything else for that matter. I know situations are different from person to person, but I've seen the strength of women through my mother. Without her, my family would have been a mess. She's the glue that held and still holds everything together. The strength and mental fortitude of my mother is sometimes awe inspiring. Physically I'm stronger than her, mentally, my mother is a literal super hero compared to myself. This is all kinda pointless because the video game collecting is just a perk for her, I just said she was wifey material because she has a great attitude and personality on top of sharing a hobby of mine. Now I'm a veteran, played sports my whole school life and work out at least 3 times a week, so she'd have to go to the gym with me. Beauty is beauty and she is very pretty, we just got to work on getting her healthy and I'd clinch the perfect 10. Already got the plan my man, just need that DM lol. Don't take RU-vid comments so seriously, sure I'd put a ring on it in a heart beat, I'm 30 years old and can pretty much tell you from the first 30 seconds of seeing someone and hearing them, if they'd be wifey, so just take this for what it was man. Just me giving a random compliment to someone that'll never read it lol.
Great video MJR! My weekend feeling is only starting when a new MJR video is uploaded and i get a notification on my phone. I can't wait until sunday/monday when the new agg episode is released. Btw the part when you said dude to here in the video was kind of amusing. Keep up the good work!
Ever since I found your channel two years ago, Iback in 2019 / 2020 I've loved it ever since because I grew up with the Nintendo DS Lite and wanted to get back into it. I got a game cartridge that has 1,900 games on it and I also collect games too that I want to physically keep. 😀👍
Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime... You guys are awesome! This is a really great game that I picked up just for the hell of it and ended up loving it.
Awesome, thank you for doing this and looking forward to you hopefully covering the great Dragon Quest games and Final Fantasy games that finally got a release stateside on the DS.....pst, no DSi XL when you were covering the hardware?
Rhapsody is a remake from the PSOne version, just like Hoshigami Remix and Final Fantasy III. I hope to eventually get SMT: Devil Summoner, but it might have gone up just like Luminous Arc since many JRPGs off the handheld seem to run only a limited supply. I have to admit I still have Dragon Ball Origins 1 and 2, and Inu Yasha DS is held as my favorite nostalgic game on the DS. Phoenix Wright and Trauma Center series, along with the amazing Hotel Dusk which hardly anyone might have even looked at if not for the hyped reviews it received. One of my favorites still is Etrian Odyssey series even though it had a cool novelty mapping system, but that is all it was - just novelty. So many great DS games, and yet the software seems to run more dry as it gets into 3DS even though they still have great games. DS Lite - Favorite handheld system to date, 3DS a close 2nd.
i dont know if its a "hidden gem" but SNK vs Capcom Card Fighters was/is amazing. it has so much high quality art and portraits of snk and capcom characters plus a lot of backstory and trivia on the cards.its a joy to look at(i bought a ds just to play it)
I'm not sure if this game is on your list, but Puzzle Quest Challenge of the Warlords for the DS and the Wii is pretty good! I found it for the DS for only $2 at Game Stop. You match up these orbs that are the same color; however, there's also this RPG side to it. You buy weapons, learn new spells, and you can capture monsters. Right now, I have a giant rat that I use as a horse LOL It's got a great story as well! It's worth checking out. Love your videos!!! Keep up the great work!!! :)
I’ll be buying Hotel Dusk. That looks fun. Just upgraded from a 2DS to a New3DSXL (grew up with a DSi) so now I can play SNES and New3DS games on top of the NES/GB/GBA/GameGear/Genesis/DS games I could play on the 2DS. Having grown up with a DS, I am happy to say that its library will probably last me for the rest of my life. It’s so fun, and nicely priced nowadays.
Locke's Quest and Contact were 2 DS games I loved that didn't get their due, probably because the gameplay on each was a little... different (especially Contact haha).
Hey MJR, Rune Factory is one of my favorite series, and there are about five of them, Rune Factory 1, 2, and 3 are all DS games, Rune Factory Oceans and Frontier are on Wii and PS3. They are ALL AMAZING!
Perfect timing for this hidden gem series. I just dusted off my DS to play some newer titles - Yes they still release games for it! I can't wait to see what hidden gems you guys reveal next.
