Kinsey is freakin lovely

My top 3 are: 1)Contact I really enjoyed this game. My sister bought it because she liked the box art. Gameplay is pretty unique in that battles are kinda turn based, but still in real time and still in the overworld. The progression/leveling is similar to Skyrim's where you have to do certain tasks/actions in order to improve that skill. Also, it has quirky characters and an interesting story. 2)The World Ends With You This gem had great music, story, and battle system. Battles play out the way Kingdom Hearts for the GBA did. 3)Advance Wars Days of Ruin I don't know if this would be considered a hidden gem, but I don't think many people are familiar with the series. AW:DoR is more balanced than AW:DS, but its theme is very dark and gritty compared to the lighter AW games. I also need to mention Lost Magic. Rhythm Heaven, and Golden Sun as they're all worth checking out.(Blood of Bahamut looks good, too... But they didn't release in the US T^T) Also, you can play DS games on a 3DS with its normal resolution by holding the start button while it's launching so it doesn't stretch.

great episode much better than last one which had too many rpgs but this one you guys gave some great shout outs definitely gonna check out a couple of those games

'Aliens: Infestation' surprised me with how great it is. The game gets hard as balls. Also, you can find stranded Marines throughout the game that will join you (pretty much adding a continue) if any members of your squad have perma died.

Recently went through a clearance bin at my local games stop and thanks to your videos I was able to pick up some super fun DS games.

You can change the aspect ration on the 3ds screen when playing Ds games by holding start + select when the game is loading. It does look much better!

About the DS games on 3DS, I think one of the System updates fixed that issue, but I can't say for sure since I don't play that many DS games on the 3DS. O prefer playing them on the regular DS, you know tradition and all

Lock's Quest: One of the finest stories in gaming. Extremely underrated.

Aliens: Infestation is a great game and can easily be found in bargain bins for $10. Essentially has the same story as Colonial Marines (finding the Sulaco Adrift with the mission to find out what happen) but this is the superior game

Great video as always. Other good DS hidden Gems are Elebits the adventures of Zero and Kai, a fun followup to Elebist on the Wii, and Magician's Quest Mysteryous Times, it's kind of a mix between Animal Crossing and Harry Potter.

I honestly prefer the DS library to the 3ds library as of late 2015.

Kinsey has improved her on screen skills greatly compared to the 1st DS gem video. Way to go Kinsey :)

Skies of Arcadia made the airship for me. I liked them in Final Fantasy but they didn't have any life to them. I am glad you mentioned in the video since Skies of Arcadia is really the only RPG I know which actually lets you use the Airship in combat. I just got a DS so these videos couldn't have been timed better. Also I like the guest. She's very nice and seems very comfortable on camera.

I hope you mention the game Lost Magic in the next video. Lost magic is an action game with strategic elements. You play as a young boy who is an aspiring wizard. You use the touch pad to draw runes to cast spells with. You can combine these runes to make many combinations of spells.

Comparing my DSI XL and 3DS XL for Ds games, I noticed that the definition is certainly higher and a bit sharper on the DSI XL. The 3ds does a decent job of smoothing out the pixels however.

I love these videos because I get to see games that I would of never thought to play and now I play it because I watch your video and find so many great games I was missing out on.

The Dig-Dug game was really cool when I first started to play it. It is really challenging and its really fun cutting off the pieces of the island.

Spectrobes is one of my favorites. It's kind of like pokemon, but less complex and much more difficult bosses.

Awesome, Lock's Quest was my favorite DS game, I was going to suggest it.

DS games aren't too bad on the 3DS provided you hold down Start or Select when you launch them, as that displays them at their original resolution instead of blowing them up; hence why it may seem 'blurry' to some. Mind you, it does make them tiny on an OG 3DS, but if you ask me the XL is by far the best all round model anyway! Great video as always MJR :D You guys named a few gems that I didn't recognize, which is surprising to me! I thought I knew the DS library pretty well, eheh. That Atlus rhythm game I'll have to check out.

Got to get my hands on that Alien game! Heard it is hard but fun! :)

DIG DUG DIGGING STRIKE! Oh man, this game was impossible to find, so I had to get it off of Amazon. Worth it, since it is a great game. Mixed with Dig Dug and Dig Dug 2, and the enemies and whatnot. Man, I love it

BTW any DS game can be booted on a 3DS in its original DS format by pressing and holding the start and select buttons while booting any DS game in a 3DS.

About original DS games on 3DS: the pixel density of the 3DS XL is virtually identical to that of the non-XL DSi, so if you hold Select when launching the game to force original resolution, it looks just like you're playing on a DSi. Definitely the best 3DS-based solution for playing original DS software.

Jets one that I bet neither of you have even heard of: Mazes of Fate. A first person dungeon crawler made in Brazil. It was the perfect mashup of eastern and western rpg elements. The dungeons were massive, I was exploring one of them probably six or seven hours before I got out. Hard to find, and the GBA version is even harder to find, but given your love of old school pc rpgs you need a copy of both.

I have the exact same Mario Bros. 25th Annyversary DSi XL model, and it's really awesome. Way better than the smaller one.

Great job MJR! I absolutely love these kind of videos, everyone knows the major games but it's awesome to get to know the games that are not well known but still cool to own.

I picked up Super Dodgeball Brawlers recently! Looked like it was similar to the NES Super Dodgeball..loved that game!

I checked the 3DS manual and there is a way to avoid blurriness when you play a DS game. All you have to do is press select or start before you click on the game icon and hold the button until the game starts, it will then play in the original "screensize ratio".

Hi Metal Jesus, there´s one trick to play DS on the 3DS with their original resolution, press and leave pressed the start or select button before you start a DS, it really makes a difference because it´s kind of blurry when you play a DS game with the default 3DS configuration

It really is blurry. But there is the possibility to make it "sharp" again by decreasing the size of the image. Not that nice on a small 3DS, but quite good on a 3DS XL.

Dementia looks really cool for a DS game..and they totally went after Doom 3 with that "You can't hold your light and your gun at the same time". Time for a duct-tape mod.

Pro tip, you can adjust the size of screen output on the 3DS when you are playing DS games. Just hold the select or start button while booting up a game. It looks really jank playing DS games on the XL screen and a lot better with the smaller screen size. However, the images are much smaller and you aren't getting big screen experience. Check it out though, it'll make your DS games look way better.

Glad you guys put Alien Infestation in there, one of the best portable games Ive ever played.

Aliens Infestation is only challenging if you get hung up on keeping all the marines alive for the whole game, which tbh isn't the most optimal way to play it. The other marines you recruit to replace the dead are more than enough to last the whole game so use em and you'll miss out on all the different characters if none die anyway. Best option is to just keep your faves alive during boss fights.

Didn't know about Track Master on the DS. I'll have to check it out!

If the upscaling bothers you that much when playing a DS game on a 3DS, what you can do before launching the game, is hold select, and it would would make the resolution what it should be on a regular DS.

Glad Dementium was mentioned; from the same people that brought Moon. The game is far from perfect. But just the fact that they managed to translate a survival horror game to the DS was amazing. ...I have it plus the sequel.

So far I'm really enjoying these hidden gems videos. This time I commented after the video. 2 things. Dementrium: The Ward. I love the atmosphere of this game, seeing as Silent Hill is my favorite game of all-time. But imagining the difference in me using an emulator w/ mouse controlls as to the stylus touch screen on DS makes me question the difficulty of play on the actual DS. In addition I think the respawning monsters does take a little of the suspense away the game. Over all I like what I've played so far and will be refiring it up again soon. But I wanna see if Disgaea DS is listed in the last vid (well, that and Chrono Trigger). Am drilling myself to death leveling up for the side quests. After this game I'm likely gonna take a recess from strategy/RPG games, and yes finish Dementrium.

Regarding Ds games on a 3DS, if you hold start and select while the game is booting up (during the black screen) it displays the game in it's original resolution so you don't get the blurriness.

There are so many good games on the nintendo ds. 999 and Professor Layton Unwound Future are my personal favorites.

I decided to jump into 3DS when Kingdom Hearts came out. The only handheld I had at the time was my PSP, which has a great screen. I think my brother has my black GBA? I bought the 3DS XL and waited for that model to come out just for the bigger screen. The only other 3DS game I have is Project X Zone, which I absolutely love, especially since I have that game's predecessor, Namco x Capcom, on JP PS2. I imported one DS game, and that's Dramatic Dungeon Sakura Taisen Kimi Ga Aru Tame. I love this series. Bought the US PS2 Sakura Taisen V: So Long My Love, then imported ST: In Hot Blood, ST3: Is Paris Burning?, STV Episode 0: Samurai Daughter of the Wild, and ST Monogatari: Mysterious Paris for JP PS2, as well as ST 1&2 on JP PSP. Knowing how different the DS game would be, I bought it and loved it. This game still looked good on the 3DS. It was great to have all the characters from Tokyo, Paris, and New York come together in a dungeon crawler.

One of my favorite games for the DS was Solatorobo, and I feel it got overlooked because it came out after the 3DS was released. It's made by CyberConnect2, known for the Naruto Ultimate Ninja Series, and is a spiritual sequel to the first game they made Tail Concerto. It's a fun game about picking things up and throwing them and it has an entire civilization made up of cats and dogs.

Great video! Nice guest and good choice of games! I haven't heard of a single one so you guys are on to something here. Aliens: Infestation especially caught my attention. The 2D graphics appeal to me. The style looks identical to GBA and DS Metroids/Castlevanias.

When i went from playing pokemon x and y to playing pokemon black and white 2 i noticed that on the 3ds the ds game looked very faded to me. Maybe i was so blown away by the 3ds graphics that it has always looked like that but im not quite sure anyways I have a gameboy advance for gameboy games, nintendo dsi for ds games, and a 3ds xl zelda edition for 3ds games. So im pretty happy to stick to that.

I have the Super Mario edition Nintendo DSi XL, I played Pokémon Diamond on it and had fun with it!!

DS games are slightly upscaled on the 3DS XL and have a SLIGHT blur to them, it's nothing terrible. I've personally been playing Pokémon Diamond on my XL and haven't had any issues with the blur, you won't notice it after you get into the game. There is the option to play the games at their original resolution by holding select and start when selecting the game at the menu. I doubt you'll want to play it that way though, I didn't. ~Shy

Aliens looks rad

I recommend Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2, it's a lot of fun especially when you take your competitions to multiplayer. The rest of the games are great RPG's and they're considered gaming staples in Japan, but the DQMonsters franchise gets even less attention than the main games do in the states.

MJ ya need more Sega Genesis vids :) Owned all systems but Genesis was my favorite. Stuff like Starflight, Buck Rogers, D&D, Road Rash, Phantasy Star....nothing could bear Starflight though.

DS games can be a bit blurry on the 3DS, when I played Pokemon Diamond on it there was quite a difference in brightness and clarity, it looked better on the DS but there isn't a massive difference.

Are you thinking about doing a 3DS hidden gems soon? Would be fun to know about them while they are still relatively recent so it's easier to find them haha.

That dodge ball game looks like they took the sprites from a game on the NES that had Soccer and Beach Volley Ball on it! God.... I used to love that game.

I like your videos and guides to new consoles. One thing I would like is maybe a little bit more explanation about the gameplay, I feel that sometimes it is a bit too brief. Otherwise these are great, keep them coming.
