New Zealand Story hadn't started on the NES, it was an arcade game, first ported to 8/16 computers (Spectrum, C64, CPC, Amiga, ST) the to 8/16 bit consoles (Master System, NES, PCE, Genesis). It was a very good game, I don't know why this DS version is the only revival to this game since 1988...

It's too bad 999 (Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors) wasn't on this list or on the honorable mentions. That was my favorite game on the DS.

"Solatorobo: Red The Hunter" is a Nintendo DS game that hardly anyone knows about, but it actually is a really nice and enjoyable game to play (even if you're not a fan of furry characters), and the copy that I purchased also came with a CD containing various music tracks from the game. :)

Orcs & Elves looks so fun! It looks like it would be a DS-equivalent to the 3DS’s The Keep. I’ll be picking this up alongside that game from a previous episode of yours lol UPDATE: it’s been 4 months since I made this comment, and I finally just got Orcs & Elves yesterday! It’s SOOOOO GOOD.

If you ask me, the most underrated game on the Nintendo DS is Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure, with Monster Tale coming as a close second. But these are some good picks as well (Puyo Pop Fever was one of my earliest DS games).

How about Radiant Historia? It's a hidden gem for sure!

Another great game everyone should play is Ghost Trick. Awesome, semi puzzle detective game. ... It's hard to explain but its amazing.

Dragon Ball Z Attack of the Saiyans is a great hidden gem. It's a pretty great rpg, but it has become somewhat rare now. Glad I still have my copy.

Contact by Atlus is also a really unique hidden gem on the DS. Not super long but so much fun. It's and adventure rpg worth playing. Children of Mana is great too. Very similar to Secret of Mana with a great colorful visual style. MetalJesusRocks you should check these out

No Fossil Fighters/Champions? It has such a unique battle system that's surprisingly deep, and digging up and cleaning the fossils is really novel. If anyone says it's a Pokemon rip-off, they clearly haven't played the games. Pokemon is very simplistic and rehashed.

I like watching these older videos. They can give me ideas for my collecting that newer videos don't. Like now wanting to collect games featuring squirrel armies. Seems such an obvious choice. No idea why I'd not started on that collection before now.

Radiant Historia, The Dark Spire, Little Red Riding Hood's Zombie BBQ, Ōkamiden, and Treasure World are a few more Nintendo DS hidden gems that should be considered. [Edit] I forgot to mention Moon by Renegade Kid I believe

I think its ridiculous that Nintendo didn't bother to make a DS remake of Metroid Zero Mission, or add another story in that same GBA style but with more graphics against a 2D Foreground.

Orcs and Elves looks exactly and plays like Doom RPG 1 and 2 and Wolfenstien RPG. Those were good java J2ME mobile games. Wish they also got a port.

I would add Last Window, the sequel to Hotel Dusk to that list. Fantastic game but it only got released in Japan and Europe so it can be hard to get a hold of (Amazon UK and US just had lot dumped on them recently, so you might be able to get them for cheap. It's been rare to see it under $70 and now there are several clocking in at $30-$40).

FINALLY! Someone gives Feel The Magic the respect it deserves! I had this with my DS at launch as it was hard to find quality games other than a few, so I went looking. I bought almost the entire early launch line up and this is one I still play today. There was a sequel: The Rub Rabbits, but it's not as quirky as the first. Off-topic: You in on Record Store Day? If so, what RSD exclusives are on your list to pick up?

Orcs & Elves is awesome. I love that game. Actually, I love ALL the Doom RPG Engine games. FYI you kinda have your stories mixed up. John Carmack didn't make Orcs & Elves. He made the engine it was based on. John Carmack was attempting to find a way to port Doom to cell phones. He was trying to figure out how to slow down gameplay & adapt its controls to work with a numerical pad without compromising fun or depth. He realized he could do this by turning it into a turn based first person RPG. Interesting bit of trivia: Orcs & Elves is the only game made by iD that was released on the DS.

Orcs and Elves looks pretty awesome! I even see it at my local used game store for years with nobody buying it. I feared it would be some boring fantasy game, probably everyone else who looked at all these years thought the same. Definitely going to get it next time I am there.

Get the Cute version of Harvest Moon DS if you can. The original Boy one you showed is a glitched mess and can actually make save files impossible to play due to some of the glitches. I had to restart the entire game thanks to the invisible wall glitch causing me to get trapped right in front of my house forever. People have taken such lengths as looking at the card's numbers just to make sure they don't have a glitched copy. That's how bad that version made things. Being id crazy, I'll have to get Orcs and Elves.

So funny later on you brought in Soul Bubbles and I was looking at and thinking about your tastes in DS games and I thought you would like that game and then you brought it up.

Kinsey should do a review of "Eco-Creatures: Save The Forest". Since it was so "slammed" as being a terrible game from various gaming sites.

My Top Five DS Hidden Gems Are: 1) Solatorobo: Red the Hunter (RPG) - didn't get the chance to completely finish it, but really novel storyline with strong characters. But you'd have to get past the slightly weird character design - talking animals. Really too many levels of cute to count and the main protagonist isn't a dumbell! The last few levels feature annoying enemies and things, so the difficulty level ramps up way too much... 2) The World Ends With You (RPG) - really novel RPG set in modern Japan. It's like Earthbound ate Paper Mario and evolved a slightly difficult/weird dual battle system that uses both screens and button presses and stylus action. Difficult to master, but fun to play. 3) Heroes of Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes (Puzzle) - fun idea to make a combat based puzzle game, and have your character affect different ways of clearing the board. 4) Soul Bubbles - relaxing as all get out, and a very interesting puzzle game. Totally agreed on it being a great game. 5) Tetris - classic tetris with different modes, and you get different graphics from classic games! Seriously fun.

Never heard of 999, Time Hollow, Rhythm Paradise or Contact DS? Summon Night:Twin Age is worth playing, too.

Is Eco Creatures worth about $8.00 used, but complete? I can't seem to find a video review on youtube for it.

I just finished watching all 3 parts of the DS hidden gems, and since neither of you have mentioned this game, I can only assume that you guys have never heard of: 999; 9 hours, 9 persons, 9 doors. I never heard of it either until maybe 9/10 months ago. This game made me put Pokémon Y aside for quite a while, that's how good is it is. It's a novel/puzzle game about a kid who abducted onto a sinking ship with 8 others. The lack of information on your first play leads to a ridiculous craving for more. Combine that with one of the best stories in a game ever, that you have no choice but to play till the end, of which there are 6! If you have a DS, this one has to be in your collection.

I remember New Zealand story on the Commodore Amiga 500! It was originally an arcade game later on ported to NES, C-64, ZX Spectrum. Atari ST, Master System etc..

I have heard of Boing! Docomodake, actually. I have a bizarre interest in novelty media. Strange formats, weird genres, that kind of thing. One of those things is advertisement games. Docomodake is the mascot of a company called NTT DoCoMo. It's a Japanese cell phone company. They actually do exist in the US too but here they operate a virtual data network in NYC. The game is a corporate tie-in like the Kool-Aid games, Chase the Chuck Wagon, the McDonald's games, Chex Quest, the Burger King games, Yo! Noid, Avoid the Noid, or the Cool Spot games. It's an interesting curiosity, that's for sure.

Hey Metal Jesus - just found your channel and loving it. However, one thing i would highly recommend that is missing from this list is 999 (9 persons, 9 doors, 9 hours) and its sequel Virtue's Last Reward on the 3ds/vita. As someone who has played games since the BBC micro in the 80s those both rate up there with the best (eg System Shock 2, Deus Ex). Hope you have had a chance to play them as it would be a crying shame to miss these gems

If I could give you just one suggestion to check out it would have to be Jake Hunter Detective Story: Memories of the Past, a noire visual-novel mystery kind of like Hotel Dusk. The music, the atmospheres, the characters, and the stories are all memorable. I cant suggest this one to you enough, if I could give you my copy to play I would, but I would want it back.
