Sorin, unlike the "troll" from BadCaps works in real world, heavy downwards costing pressure consumer level repair environment which a lot of techs believe is easy but quickly change their tune when faced with job & time realities. The cheaper the end product, the greater the repair costing pressure will be & the quicker the break even economic repair viability point will be reached. The greater the cost, niche, desirability (because its not made anymore) or rarity of a repaired product greatly reduces time costing repair pressures & with enough time & resources almost everything is repairable

This doesn't just apply to electronics, it's across the whole repair/maintenance industry

I agree. Start by applying flux and then with a soldering iron, apply low melt solder to all the solder joints first. It mixes with the higher temp lead free solder on the board, and lowers the melting temperature. More flux and then hot air to remove. Clean everything up with a solder wick and clean off the residue. Apply more flux and tin the pins on the board with a soldering iron. More flux and hot air the new connector back on.

@@GGR543 Exactly. I think Sorin knows all of this, but he somehow feels that given the price of the repair he shouldn't do any of these things or the shop owner doesn't feel like he needs to invest in good tools. The thing is, with good tools and methods jobs go faster, not slower.

just use...indium solder, lead solder don't decrease the fusion temp. enough most of time->...500°c ^^, you (every hobyist?) need to buy another hot station(the older one and cheaper one==max 480°c)

@@ZZZ-z9n3n lead solder do decrease heating time compare to lead free solder. Do you know indum is a brand not a mix. Please suggest what mix is good for rework job that indum brand has to offer. I'm always using Kester solder, in my whole life as a pcb assemblers and rework technician. And yes hobbyist should get better tools. Unless they really confident in they skills, and a free time.😅😁

@@mohamadasriabdulazid4784 indium is not a brand..it's indium alloys->indium+ tin www.chipquik.com/datasheets/SMDIN100.pdf 118°c vs 220°c for common lead free solder 118°c vs 180°c for lead solder skills and time can't fill the gaps caused by your lack of tools a fx888d is a good tool for an hobbyist but it never beat a jbc CD-2BQF and its "active" iron tips ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-scvS2yeUH00.html a.t.m. sorin's new hakko is old tech. completely outclassed but at the same price as the jbc ... i understand why rossman and cie don't use jbc...vat.. in europe ,it's cheaper, when you solder with the jbc, you'll lost 20-30°c( understand to solder at 220°c, you'll need to config your station at 240-250°c) lost where? in the pcb..thermal inertia with the old school iron station, you can lose until 70-80°c.... so? you need 275°c, you need to heat your iron tip at 350-360°c and whit a big ground masse behind your component? you'll raise both the temp AND the time you need to solder something (typical example : hdmi port on a ps4,usb port and so on) but how an hobbyist can spend 300-400euros for a decent station ^^ don't ever forget...electronic is not for the poor buy an fx888d for school and the jbc one for the rest too expensive? make some pottery with your wife :p yes..using indium solder change a lot , like a lot with a big L but indium is toxic, worst than lead but if you have only an fx888 and an old hot station(480°c max) and need to change a hdmi port on a ps4,that's the way to go (one strip of indium solder of 10cm cost something like 10-16euro) with the indium solder, you can use desoldering wick like northridgefix in his video
