Nintendo Switch Has So Many Tetris Games 

About ten years ago, my grandmother was staying in the hospital. When I visited her, she tells that me she’s bored and asks me if there’s a video game that “an old lady could understand”. I recommend Tetris to her, downloaded it on her tablet, and showed her how to play. The next week, I went to see her again. As soon as I walk into the room, she looks up from her tablet and says “I hate you for getting me addicted to this stupid game.”

Tetris Diamond is one of my favourite things on the eShop and I'd absolutely have no idea it exists if it wasn't for you, Jon! - I love all you do for bringing up these obscure oddities. I hope everybody purchases it immediately so the Nokia SMS app gets ported next.

Wonder if we will ever get a Fire Emblem Tetris spinoff where the divine dragon has to strategically set their "units" to create explosions/battles and end the reign of the Shadow Dragon Tetriminon

The other Tetris games are great but you can't beat that zen experience of playing Tetris Effect. it is an absolutely phenomenal game :)

You mentioned the A Theme, B theme and C Theme, but did you know GB Tetris has a secret fourth theme? In the very first prints of the Japanese versions of GB Tetris, the A Theme was not the famous Korobeiniki, but was instead a completely different song. This rarer version of the GB Tetris is known as the "Minuet version".

You forgot to mention that Tetris Effect Connected has NES Tetris basically built in! If you love Game boy Tetris, it’s worth checking it out!

Jon, this video is so good. That being said, I think its time for a ranking of your favorite Tetris games ever made. If there is anybody that could do such a list, it would be you.

Tetris, the easiest to learn, simplest gameplay but addictive to the core.

Puyo puyo Tetris is probably the one I’d recommend getting if you have multiple people you want to play with otherwise stick to Tetris effect

I honestly have not seen ANYONE mention the RPG mode in Puyo Tetris 2. Good on you Jon for giving me another reason to play the game again!

I've been playing Type-B in Tetris GB on Switch. It is still super appealing, and not being able to hold a piece like the modern games makes a huge difference in strategy. I love it!

You all owe it to yourselves to get Tetris The Grand Master on Switch. ARIKA and the Tetris company need to see that the TGM series is wanted, and this is how they'll be able to get TGM4 made. I never thought the day would come that TGM would go worldwide, and this is a much better way on cost to play it than original hardware, importing it, etc. which will be A LOT of $ spent in the end.

This was a great video! I have had tons of fun playing tetris over the years, first on one of those hand-held "gadgets" specifically for tetris that you'd buy on many stores, later on pc and now on switch (mostly solo marathon or ocasionally online in tetris 99) but when I played Tetris Effect it completely blew my mind. It is an experience! The graphics and the different atmospheres make the game incredibly beautiful and immersive. The music (many types) and the effects on the background + the pieces, it's just super and very addictive. Love it! I've been trying the classic one now on nso and also having a good time. I love how it looks with the game boy colour filter, especially.

As someone who doesn't really like tetris, tetris effect is one of my favorite games. I would recommend it even if you're not a puzzle game fan

The thing with tetris becoming more forgiving is due to the system it uses to randomize the pieces. The game never knows which piece you “need” but it takes the 7 possible tetriminos and sorts them randomly. Then does it again when they are all used and so on.

We started playing Tetris 99 every sunday, and we still are. We now play other Tetrises, and have a very healthy and motivated community. Tetris is the best! We need MORE! Hope NES Tetris and SNES Tetris & Dr. Mario (maybe Tetris Battle Gaiden?) make its way to NSO.

Dang, I'd bought Tetris Diamond already just to say I had every Switch Tetris game, but I had no idea Grand Master had been released too! I'm such a casual Tetris fan, having only... five versions of it... 😞

Oh shoot, I didn't know Tetris Effect and Grandmaster were on Switch! I didn't even know what Diamond was. Sounds like I have some catching up to do. It was a pleasure to play Game Boy Tetris with you and I think it awoke something in the Tetris chamber on my brain. Good stuff.

Tetris on Gameboy is still my favorite. That music is just so infectious. Every song in that game. It’s so unforgiving

Somehow I KNEW you were going to make a video about this as soon as GB Tetris was announced for the Switch Jon, and you didn’t disappoint. (Obligatory jealous comment about NES Nintendo Tetris not being on NSO. Yes I know it doesn’t have a 2 player mode, but I miss hearing the sugarplum fairies theme with falling tetrominoes dammit. XD)

Shallow as it is, it's heart warming to hear someone else with a deep voice presenting these things, and then see the comments talking about the actual topic! Congratulations on building this community. Anyways, I can't imagine playing Tetris Effect outside of VR. And while I appreciate Diamond and Gameboy, it's missing the custom soundtracks of Worlds on Xbox and it's not got any classic NES themes... It's all just Tetris for people who actually enjoy Tetris. Madness. Alas, my favorite Tetris game is still Panel De Pon.

Nothing will ever beat the original Gameboy version of Tetris, they even got the music to a UK number 1 back in 1992.

I love Tetris so much. The Switch has so many good Tetris games. I love Tetris Effect and Tetris 99. And I was so into GameBoy version, I’m so glad to see that come to Switch as well! I’m gonna be interested to see how they handle the Gameboy’s sound effects, since it couldn’t play a lot of sounds at once. I like both ways, where the music gets drowned out for a second, and where it doesn’t because modern sound chips can handle both music and sound effects. I just love seeing how the emulator handles it.

Hi! I've loved each and every single one of these games. Loved this video by the way ! I just wish to add a few more things as a higher level Tetris player. GB Tetris : Weirdly enough not having a shadow piece doesn't make a difference, nor does the worse RNG (though you gotta play a bit safer). The only thing that makes this game truly difficult is the awful, awful 6.5 Hz ARR (i.e the speed the pieces moves at when you keep the D-Pad pressed). The speed level caps at 20 and this speed is really not that bad once you have a bit of experience, but the fact that you need to tap D-Pad consistently to survive is really tiring. It definitely is the most iconic though. Tetris 99 : Yes. Not a popular pick from the Guideline Tetris community but a personal favorite of mine. It's just chill to play and vibe (I'm just a bit sad that the shock factor of hearing "Flight of the Bumblebee" lost its impact after playing for literally thousand of hours, but hey...) TGM : The most hardcore Tetris game... until you figure out ARS and IRS, respectively the rotation system the game uses (which allows for stupidly easy spins. Even the current rotation system, the SRS, asks to be more thoughtful about them) and the buffering of your rotation. What really throws me and a lot of guideline players off though is the lack of both Wall Kicks and Floor kicks (i.e, when you rotate near a wall or on the floor in modern games, the piece will rotate. Not in this one.). TGM 1 is surprisingly easy to get GM if you have experience with other Tetris games, it took me about a month. Fortunately the easy parts are solved in TGM 2 (and TGM 3, but it's done way worse there. And that's coming from someone who got the GM grade there aswell. Though to be fair this one has SRS). Tetris Diamond : Haven't played Tetris Effect : Totally agree. The max number of line clear during zone has been shaterred to 34, maybe a bit more now. In solo you can't have more than a 23 line zone clear though. Learning IRS is a really fun part of zone too! Also Zone Battle is by far the most balanced vs game mode out of any Tetris game, both official and unofficial. PPT 1 & 2 : ...These games' online died when TE:C released, especially PPT 2 due to its much harsher matchmaking system. Which is a shame, I love the ambiance of this one but man. 4 wide really did not help its reputation either, at least at higher level. Again, loved the video!

The OG Tetris on the Game Boy was my childhood back in the day. Absolutely adore that game, and I absolutely ADORE Tetris Effect.

Tetris 99 is my go-to game to play while I listen to podcasts. I'm sure I've logged more hours onto that game than any other by a few miles.

For that last bit about the Mega Drive having a Tetris, I want to add that both the NES and the Nintendo 64 have their own Tetris, as well. Also, there's Tetris: The Grand Master 2 and 3, and who knows when they're released.

The New Tetris on N64 is still my favorite. The silver and gold combo block system was so addictive.

Tetris 99 is included in the price for NSO. Saying it’s free distracts people from the fact that they are paying money for these subscriptions. Companies bank on people forgetting they are paying money for these services and describing it as “free” makes people think they are getting something for nothing. Sorry, this is just a big pet peeve of mine, you can’t get something for free by paying money for it.

I think Tetris might be the game I have spend lote hours in my life. Across many platforms and many formats and I love how we are having a great variety of games on the switch.

They may have a lot, but they still don’t have my favorite. Tetris & Dr. Mario on the SNES is by far my favorite. On the surface it’s just a pretty basic collection, but I’ve spent so many hours playing the Mixed Match mode with my family. It’s my most wanted SNES Online game so I can play it again with my mom online

I love Tetris too Jon, especially when they do a theme weekend. I have put more hours into this than even animal crossing 😮 I like to play whilst waiting for my dinner to cook. Unfortunately, on the rare occasion I do really well I have over cooked it, literally. Tetris Effect is really good too though the Switch really struggles at times making it frustrating.

Now we need Tetris on Labo VR.

I wanna give a shout shoutout to Pokemon Puzzle League as that was a Tetris attack expanded. Great little game with a 3D wall. Also imo a good Tetris game with a dynamite soundtrack is Tetrisphere. I feel like that game is a little under appreciated but not overrated. It’s my favorite but I’m not the biggest Tetris fan.

They just announced... TGM The Absolute 2 for Switch. So, maybe they are going to bring TGM 3 and the Genesis one as well. There's a chance that the Switch can get up to 10 Tetris titles by the end of it's lifetime. I feel you're going to make a new video.

It sucks that the Switch version of Tetris Effect removed the VR mode, it would have worked well with Labo VR. I have it on PS4 (as well as Switch) but unfortunately don't have PSVR, so I've never been able to experience the VR mode.

The Game Boy NSO app is in the Tetris folder, but the SNES NSO app isn't in the Puyo folder? It has Puyo Puyo 2.

your Puyo Puyo folder is almost as big as your Tetris folder you say? When I was putting my games in folders, I just made a folder called "Puyo Puyo Tetris" and lumped them all in there. :D

I would love The New Tetris for N64. Not for the gameplay, but that OST is amazing. I remember recording the soundtrack to my PC cause it was that good.

I own and love PuyoPuyo Tetris 1&2 and Tetris Effect: Connected. Spent countless hours on those.

So many Tetris Games on the Switch but still not an single version that you can play in tate (vertical) mode on TV. There was an update for tetris effect in march for tate mode but you can only use it in handheld or table mode. I use a rotateable wall mount for my tv for ikaruga, pinball games etc. this is fantastic. But still no Tetris in vertical mode.

As a huge Tetris fan I have literally been eating on my switch the only thing that I would add would be NES Tetris the unreleased Genesis Tetris and the new Tetris on Nintendo 64. Sure in my dream world I would love for them to add capcom's magical Tetris Challenge on Nintendo 64 but I don't think the licensing would work out but I've been wrong before! Maybe "Tetris 2" or Tetris DX for GB?

I actually hope that with the release of Game Boy Tetris that we can get a release of NES Tetris since that version has never seen any rerelease it would be a very important release since that is by far the most competitive Classic Tetris version to the point where Tetris Effect: Connected straight up has a Classic Score Attack that's purely based on NES Tetris

They play really great with a joystick that has a 4 way restrictor gate too.
