October 18, 1993. Veterans Memorial Coliseum (Arizona State Fair), Phoenix, AZ. This was the First show on Nirvana's American "In Utero" Tour. After show Interview with MTV Backstage [Full Interview]. Interviewer : Micheal Alex.
Smear wasn't even supposed to be a Nirvana touring guitar player, Kurt wanted the other person named Mike but he refused, so he hired Smear by the advice of his junkie wife
Kurt is being so earnest and sincere in this interview. Krist keeps wanting to jump in and do his goofball tangents but obviously is holding himself back. I wonder if Kurt told him not to beforehand or if he was purposely holding back because Kurt was actually taking the initiative to speak
Kurt and Pat were incredibly high during this one. Some of the best Kurt was when he was lit off tar and forgot how much he hated interviews for a minute.
@@Errcyco yep it's obvious he's on heroin. I totally get why he self-medicated. He seems almost "normal" in this interview compared to how he usually is, which was the point. Oh. And I just noticed he's wearing the shirt he died in.
It all depends on the mood and the interviewer, this one was smart and engaging them. Asking different questions, but yeah Krist seemed antsy like a kid waiting to act out. Sometimes Kurt lets Krist take the spotlight and seems to enjoy it but, he was the alpha here.
i really resonate with Kurt @5:44 when he has that infinite sadness after knowing that some of the kids want to just tear him apart and that's their mentality, which is so opposite of what he represents as such a caring person. as a female that's what I pickup very much. Too bad there's not much of that kind of honesty left in the world.
Had the luck of seeing them live just before the end, in Rome, with The Melvins as opening act. I barely remember that evening as we were high as hell, young and dumb, but I still have the fucking ticket somewhere.
Kurt seemed super down at that 02/22/94 Rome show. Kurt did not speak at all during the show (except for when he says "Grassy ass" right before Smells Like Teen Spirit), and at the end of the show after the last song "Heart-Shaped Box" while Dave & Krist does that Jam which is labeled as "what's my sentence" if you watch the show on RU-vid, you see Kurt went behind his 4 Marshall Cabs, and then Kurt throws his 1993 MIJ Fender Sonic Blue Mustang over the Amps and it lands in the center of the Stage near Krist.
Kurt clearly started to accept his fame and seemed to want to grow larger, play for bigger crowds and even the people he didn’t really like who’d “rip him apart”. I think he’s misunderstood in a way people don’t understand. Drugs make you do, say and write things that aren’t exactly accurate to what you feel, it’s usually excuses for your actions. I think the pressure of his intervention and realizing people around him wouldn’t put up with it anymore and thinking it was impossible to live clean, or be happy clean, PLUS the pressure of the magazines and uncertainty of his marriage and being around for his child. If you’re in withdrawal everything seems worse and more impossible, it seems like it won’t end. I think his suicide note was mostly BS, high or withdrawal talk, a lot of drug addicts kill themselves when they cant do it anymore or realize people around them won’t accept it anymore. You’d have to go threw it to understand, today we have suboxone and what not. I think his suicide is over thought and that letter he left was more excuses/emotional talk and BS that addicts say, all addicts are similar mentally (because of being high/Withdrawl whichever state he was in, if I remember he was high, he wrote a BS note) Kurt was just overwhelmed, didn’t see a way out, and they way he hid to get high again shows he was running from everyone to continue it and knew he had to choose. I’ve been there, I’ve thought to myself I’d rather die than go threw WD like this, it’ll never end, it won’t get better, statistically I’ll just relapse even if I do get clean, it’s an extremely dark place, when you feel forced especially, which is obvious with his hiding away from everyone) He simply was an addict and seen no way out, being in magazines and the world knowing didn’t help, but his fame, music, or not loving what he did anymore wasn’t what made him pull the trigger, it’s much simpler.
It’s refreshing to see someone not trying to martyr Kurt and extract some big symbolism from his death. He was just a flawed, nuanced human who talked shit and contradicted himself who was ill and could’ve gotten better but didn’t make it in time unfortunately.

This was filmed after the first American In Utero Tour (10/18/1993) which lasted until 01/08/94. Of course they had a few breaks after Unplugged for Thanksgiving, and resume the tour 11/26/93 and then tour until 12/18/93 and had another break for Christmas, and resume the tour on 12/29/93 - 01/08/94. Kurt enjoyed the American In Utero Tour, and none of the Nirvana members wanted to go straight on to an European In Utero Tour, like if you think about it Nirvana ended their American In Utero tour on January 8, 1994, on January 30, 1994 they Recorded an Instrumental version of the unknown song "Ivy League" which was performed at the end of the 11/12/93 & 12/29/93 shows... And recorded "You Know You're Right" and 5 days later 02/04/94 - Nirvana is on Canal+ (Nulle Part Ailleurs), Paris, France (where they played Rape Me, Pennyroyal Tea and Drain You), then the next day 02/05/94 they did a Rehearsal of the "Acoustic" songs so Melora Creager can learn the Cello parts (as Lori Goldston was cello on the American In Utero Tour, and Melora Creager is cello on the European Tour) , and then the next they start the European In Utero Tour, which only lasted from 02/06/94 - 03/01/94.
@@vipprman January 8, 1994 Seattle Center Coliseum, Seattle WA was Nirvana's Last ever American show (and last Show on the American In Utero Tour), and the March 1, 1994 Terminal 1 Flughafen München-Riem Munich Germany was Nirvana's last ever show (with Kurt at least) and it would of been the last European In Utero Tour.
Yeah Frances has Kurts smile and get the same dimples as Kurt did when he smiled. And Frances also has Kurts color eyes and also has Kurts artistic drawing/painting skills like Kurt. And she kinda has Kurts nose (but then like Frances lips, cheeks and forehead is all looks from Courtney).
@@grahamjarman I bet if it wasn't for Nirvana and Cobain, Dave Grohl would Not be as Famous as he is these Days, Sure Dave was writing his own songs while he was in Nirvana and did that solo cassette tape "Pocket watch" release under the name Late! And in the 80s Dave played drums in the Punk band Scream, which didn't do much in success wise, and Dave got popularity because of the Success that followed the Release of Nevermind. So if it wasn't for Kurt being such an Amazing Artist and Musician, and Have such a Great Band I doubt Foo would ever even be a thought, people probably checked the Foo out In late 94/95 because "It's the Nirvana Drummer playing guitar and Singing" but if Dave was Never in Nirvana people probably wouldn't give 2 shits about Dave or His Crappy Band.
@@rychcorporhate ive never liked dave. theres a few foo songs i find tolerable but dave seems like a cocky backstabber whereas kurt seems more emotionally unstable. but theres no comparison whos the better songwriter, cooler guitarist, and downright dominant artist of the 2. hell i put kurt n the same room w lennon or hendrix
Kurt was clearly an introvert but with the right questions and sensitive interviewee he is great interview imo, but wen asked the same thing over n over again the most outspoken wud get tiresome of that too.
@21:57 When Kurt talks about that tour...I seen them for that one. And YES...Kurt was wearing a dress...and he looked COOL. It was at the LA Sports Arena...and I felt that the boys blew both the Peppers and Pearl Jam off the stage that night! It was for sure....in my top 5 of all time best shows I've ever seen....
@Elisabetta I would love to...but my memory is pretty hazy(such a long time ago). I remember certain songs...but not the whole set unfortunately. : ( I'm sure someone has the list somewhere....I would love to see it myself. What I do remember clearly....was how powerful the band was....and how great they played.
never seen Krist the same as he was in this interview, really sad when your best friend in life just go in an adventure that you just can't follow in with him...
@@cursedfetus8129 we're too sweet for our own good sometimes! definitely easily taken advantage if intuition isn't in check. at least y'all have a shell! haha pisces and cancer are soul mate signs. we def need your protection and nurturance when the waves get high and heavy~*
He should've just stopped touring altogether, but once a year put on a concert like their album Unplugged in New York. That would've eased up most of the pressure and people would respect it.
This interview is just another proof that they were really nice guys with good sense of humour. And I think they were conscious guys. Kurt was in good menthal and physical condition. And it was less than 6 months before he died, so I will never understand what exactly happened through next months...
Please Do not spread that "Justice for Kurt" propaganda on my Videos I do not like talking about his Death, I prefer to talk about his Life, His Art, His Music, His Great Sense of Humor, and I stay away from the whole Death Conspiracy, weather it was Murder or Suicide Kurt is gone and it won't bring him back sadly. So I find that whole thing useless... And as Seattle PD said they are NOT opening the case... They believe it's suicide and they are sticking to it... So without Seattle PD I just don't see how "Justice" can be done... So I would sincerely appreciate it, if none of these comments are posted in my videos. Thanks.
@@lukejeffrey1501 I know there is a huge difference between Suicide and Murder, but I do not like the whole "Justice for Kurt" even though I am the hugest Kurt Cobain fanatic there is... I personally prefer to enjoy Kurt's life his Art, Music, videos, Interviews, Concerts, home demos, Studio Sessions, etc... I rather rejoice in Kurts life then talk about his Death. Because no matter what if he was murdered (which is most likely the case) or if it was suicide Kurt is gone and no matter what we all do petitions and all, unfortunately nothing sadly will bring Kurt back. So I prefer to stay away from the whole Death Conspiracies.
@pissedoffporcupine8 That song by Jesus Lizard is from an album released in 93, and it and In Utero were both Steve Albini productions. So they both have his signature sound.
pat smear joining nirvana was amazing back n the days haha the legendary germs with nirvana i could only imagine of darby crash an cobain made music together that woulda been some craaazy lyrics thats forsure
there was nothing amazing when Smear joined Nirvana, even by the fact Kurt wanted the other person on rhytm guitar and it was not Smear, but that guy refused Kurt's offer
Well when Dave Joined the band September 25, 1990 (which was Dave's Try-Out with the Band at the Dutchman Rehearsal Space, Seattle, WA) and Dave's First show with Nirvana was October 11, 1990 North Shore Surf Club, Olympia, WA in this time frame for the next 9 or 10 months Kurt and Dave Lived together Dave moved Into Kurt's Apartment 114 N. Pear Street, Olympia, WA (which Kurt and Tracy used to live together from 1987 - 1990 until Kurt dumped her and she moved out) and Kurt lived in the Apartment until 1991 until Kurt was evicted during the Nevermind Tour Kurt was Homeless ... (To think when Nirvana played the Paramount Theater, Seattle on Halloween 1991 Kurt was living in his car)... But In the later days like end of 1993 / early 1994 during the In Utero Tours, Kurt was more close with Pat Smear who shared a Bus, and on the Other Bus was Dave and Krist...
@@mateoarana1169 Krist and Kurt never lived together, they grew up in Aberdeen at the same time, but when Nirvana was formed Kurt lived in Olympia with his girlfriend Tracy Marander, and Krist lived in Tacoma with his girlfriend Shelli (until Krist and Shelli got married on 12/31/89)... They were married for 10 years until they got divorced in 1999.
@@rychcorporhate Thanks for all the detailed information. Although, I do not think Kurt was homeless at the Paramount Theatre show on Halloween 1991. After they returned from recording Nevermind at Sound City in May 1991, Kurt was evicted from the Pear Street apartment. By then, Dave moved to Seattle to live with a friend and Krist was living with his wife in Tacoma. I heard Kurt lived in his car briefly upon returning from recording Nevermind, but not for 5 months. I am pretty sure he stayed with Krist for a while and then by the time of the Paramount show he was in a serious relationship with Courtney. Two days after that show, they flew to Europe to tour.
Slave Ship by the Jesus Lizard from their 92 record Liar. One of the quintessential 90s noise rock/punk bands. I think they were on tour around this time opening for Nirvana.
Que hermoso era kurt.su cabello rubio y sus ojos azules como el mar de Cancún que hombre tan guapo y ala vez tan sencillo.como me gustaría que viviera y fuera feliz.dios te de la gloria Ángel del cielo.
Though playing with Nirvana at Studio 8H, NBC Studios, New York, NY on Saturday Night Live September 25, 1993 was Pat's first live performance with Nirvana. But it's awesome that Pat's first full show with Nirvana which would be the first show of the North American In Utero Tour which started October 18, 1993 and someone in the crowd threw Pat a Germs t-shirt. As he mentioned in this Interview after the first In Utero Tour show on October 18, 1993. P.s. when the band was mentioning things that were thrown on stage Kurt said in this Interview that he got his first Bra at this show. Actually that would be Kurt's second Bra as someone threw a bra at Kurt at the June 21, 1992 The Point Theatre, Dublin, Ireland show and Dave Wore it for a bit at the show.
I think they all have their own Cigarettes (minus Krist as he is not really a smoker he is an occasional smoker most likely when he's drunk as we all know being drunk you want a cigarette. But Anyways Dave Smoked Marlboro Reds, Pat Smoke some weird Brand, And Kurt smoked Benson and Hedges Ultra Light Deluxe Mental 100s ... During the Majority of the American/European In Utero Tours... And if you carefully watch this Interview, you see Kurt pulls his own Cigarettes outside of his pocket, and over by Dave you see his pack of Marlboro on the table next to him....
lol when there talking about the show in sau paulo and krist says "remember that time we did that thing" its a little shot at kurt because he walked off the stage during the show leaving only the drummer and bassist to play in front of 110 thousand people... kurt was wrong for that
Kurt didn't walk off the Stage in São Paulo, Krist Is the one who walked off stage, he got pissed off at Kurt because Kurt was too fucked up and kept tuning and un-tuning his guitar and kept forgetting how to play the songs, that's why If you listen to some of the Audio "Lounge Act" is just a Jam as Krist is playing the bass line and Dave is drumming and instead of Kurt coming in on his part he was just hitting random notes, (supposedly Kurt took pills before the show that made his Fuck up alot) and Krist got pissed off and Threw his Bass at Kurt and walked off stage and someone in the Nirvana Camp had to go find Krist and tell him that they had a contract to play for 90 minutes that they couldn't break it so Krist came back on stage and picked up his bass and didn't even bother tuning it, and I think that's why towards the end of the show when they were playing Scentless Apprentice, you see Kurt walk over to Krist's side and Kick Krist's amp over, It's actually the Only show in Nirvana history where Kurt Smashed 2 guitars in one night..... Kurt first smashed completely Broke apart his Black and White Fender Japanese Stratocaster with a Seymour Duncan Hotrail pickup in the Bridge during the (Run to the Hills/Heartbreaker Jams) and then at the end of the Show Kurt breaks his Japanese Sunburst/Light Blue Fender Telecaster (its a Sunburst Japanese Fender Telecaster that was used in parts of the Come As You Are Music Video which you see on the Green screen on the walk during the solo, which was filmed on January 16, 1992 at Wattles Park Los Angeles CA and the rest of the Video was filmed on January 20, 1992 at Air National Guard hangar, Van Nuys Airport, Van Nuys, CA) then 4 days later they went on their Pacific Rim Tour of Australia/Japan and on the 24th at the Phoenician Club Sydney Australia Kurts Japanese Fender Telecaster Kurt had painted the front of it Light Blue with Latex House Paint and Scratched a
@@foreverwander0320 true, so is mental illness. Theres plenty of interviews/live footage/pics of Kurt from late 93, going into 94, where he clearly looks miserable. Just because he looks happy here doesnt mean anything. Someone with major depression/BPD will cycle in and out of high and low moods, sometimes even in the same day. But of course these wackos look for any reason to push the murder theory
Justin Taylor There’s never been a death similar to his. I honestly don’t think a person has to be a “whacko” to find it extremely strange. We still may never know but it’s definitely not what just the media or Courtney portrayed.
They are on good terms here, they were good during the American In Utero Tour, it was during the European Tour that the band weren't on speaking terms... (And the Reason Krist threw his bass at Kurt at the 01/16/93 São Paulo, Brazil show was because Kurt was all fucked up on pills and was playing guitar very sloppy, I think that incident happened during "Lounge Act" as the audio you hear Krist and Dave playing Lounge Act and Kurt just hits random notes not even playing the song... But Kurt and Krist were always good friends until around February 94 Kurt and Krist weren't really on speaking terms as during the European In Utero Tour Kurt told Cellist Melora Creager to play whatever she wants, then Krist asks her "your playing it like on the record, right?" And in March in 1994 when Krist last seen Kurt he was driving Kurt to the Airport to go to Rehab in Los Angeles, and Kurt said he wanted Jack In The Box, so Krist was gonna go to a Jack In The Box, but Kurt claim that their burgers were too greasy that he wanted to go to the Jack In The Box on Capitol Hill, (Because that was right near Kurt's Heroin dealer Caitlin Moore's Apartment). And then Kurt tried to jump out the moving car and Krist had to reach and grab Kurt while driving with the other hand and then when they were at SeaTac Airport Kurt punched Krist in the face and said Fuck You Fuck You, and ran away and Krist just saw Kurt's blonde hair go around the corner and that was the last time he saw Kurt alive, and supposedly Krist drove back home crying....
@@rychcorporhate Oh and another question 😅 idk if you can answer this but why kurt is like more friendly with dave than with krist? weren’t they best friends?
@@mateoarana1169 - I think Krist got on Kurt's nerves sometimes. He drank a lot, talked constantly, and was kind of a dummy. They had a lot of disagreements over the years. Plus Krist wasn't a drug guy, so he's not in the "cool crowd". And Courtney hated him, he wasn't at the wedding, I don't think.
If your referring to the song playing in the beginning while you see Big John Duncan and the In Utero Angel with Kurt’s ‘93 Sonic Blue MIJ Fender Mustang around the Angel, that song is called “Slave Ship” by the Jesus Lizard.
Yes sir, Kurt wore the Suede Pumas from September 8, 1993 (when Kurt Joined Courtney on stage for an Acoustic duet of "Pennyroyal Tea" and Where Did You Sleep Last Night" at Club Lingerie (Rock Against Rape Benefit), Los Angeles, CA Until Nirvana's Second show at the Aragon Ballroom, Chicago, IL October 25, 1993 (During Nirvana's American In Utero Tour), Kurt Jumped into the Audience and someone stole His shoes... That's why if you look at pictures of Kurt at Soundcheck for the next night gig on October 26, 1993 Mecca Auditorium, Milwaukee, WI Kurt is wearing just socks, Kurt was asked by Jeff Mason (Production Manager) "Don't you have another pair of shoes?" Which Kurt replied "No" so before the show someone went out and bought Kurt a Pair of Black and White Converse Sneakers....

Really? I think If there was a chance to hangout with Kurt it would of been Amazing, like Not only was he an Amazing Artist, And Musician, but he had such a great sense of humor, and I Love the way he makes his art, and his dark sense of humor I'm in to so I think Kurt and I would of had alot in common and hanging out would of been a blast. Kurt is the only person who I feel 100% I can relate too... We understand each other...
Kurt does seem like that weird kid from school, that was just kinda uncomfortable to be around. However, I’d love to spend time alone with him and pick his brain a bit. I don’t idolize him, just would enjoy it.
at 2 minutes when kurts answers krists question about the lyrics with 'goodbye papa its hard to die' you can notice that both pat and krist felt sometype of way. thats sad...
