To understand why this song is so good you must go back to 1991 and understand how the rockscene was right then. The hairbands were all over the sunset strip and everything was about women, sex, alcohol and drugs. Then this band came and changed everything. The glam/sleeze scene were pushed way to far and everyone was fed up. This was something new and it changed everything forever. Unfortenly Kurt was not ready for being the person everyone Wanted him to be. God bless his soul.

The SONGS was all about the same things. Not the groups. Everything has its glory days and the glam/sleeze/hair era had pushed it to the max. Something else was ready to take over and that one was Nirvana.

Kurt didn't like being famous and probably played a huge role in his demise. He just liked making music and it ended up catching on in a big way to the point where they were the biggest band of the early 90s and everyone became obsessed with him as a person and how he looked and it imploded real quick. Nirvana is one of the biggest bands of all time but the weird thing is they only released 3 albums and the first of those didn't get that big. They only really got to release 2 albums while they were on top. The album that got them big and the follow up to it over like a 2-3 year period. Its such a tragic story.
@MainelyW212

Some would argue that the Chrons disease that even heroin couldn’t help the pain of had the biggest influence on his death. And another group blame Courtney Love....

I think Kurt likes hating the idea of fame than actual fame. He was a introvert but also seemed to love the admiration and the need to be respected. Mostly though he loved heroin and he didn’t want to quit. He had a kid and Courtney got off drugs and expected the same out of him. If anyone was ever a drug addict they would know how much opiates take control. Dude loved being high and loved it more than his kid. Sucks to say but the dude was sick and Courtney is bat shit crazy. Last time he tried to kill himself she was cheating on him with Billy Corgan when she was in Europe. This time she was saying get clean or I will leave you and take our kid. It was too much for him and wasn’t ready to get clean. It was less about being a tortured artist, as much people want to believe it. It fits his image people portray him to have. He really was the greatest songwriter and probably the last legendary figure of rock.
@greengopher2354
@greengopher2354 5 лет назад
He acted like he didn't like fame but he actually craved it. It was likely more the stress to stay on top that caused his demise.

Kurt said a lot of ppl put too much thought into his lyrics and that a lot of them have no meaning. He supposedly wrote this song about his best friend, Dylan Carlson, but I agree it seems to be taking a stab at the fans that came with mainstream success; the interesting thing though is that this song came out before they had gotten a lot of mainstream success. Their first album, Bleach, was decently successful but they didn't break big until the album this song was on came out. I reccomend you reading the book "Journals". It's basically just photo copies taken from his own personal journals; it really helps you understand who Kurt was as a person. It's really interesting, Kurt really was a brilliant mind. It's also rather sad because you can tell when he started becoming an addict, his handwriting becomes very sloppy and his thoughts become more and more convoluted with each entry. Also other songs by Nirvana to check out are "Drain You" and my personal favorite "Territorial Pissings".
@0okamino
@0okamino 5 лет назад
Yeah, I was going to bring up that _Nevermind_ was their first mainstream success. In that light, I don't think the chorus is strictly autobiographical, but more of a "there's always going to be those people who..." statement. It's a rather John Lennon-ish sentiment.

@williamkramer9731
@williamkramer9731 4 года назад
He also hid alot about himself and his lyrics having little meaning have been long since debunked by people who were personally close to him and could actually pick apart what he was saying. His lyrics definitely meant quite a bit, but we're also clearly wrote in a way as to not put himself out there.
@ct5625
@ct5625 3 года назад
Cobain said (maybe twice) in interviews that people read too much into his lyrics, but anyone who really analyzes his writing can see there is intent, and that he was probably just being too humble about his ability, or he was embarrassed about being asked about the meanings of his songs in literally every interview. We know he was pissed at the image of the "tragic artist" and wanted to fight against it, so all those questions usually came with suggestions that he was depressed and morbid. I also think that if you're just writing meaningless songs you don't need a lyric book to add to the way we know he did every day. It also shows in Hole's album Live Through This, which most people heard and believed was Kurt's lyrical skill and not Courtney's. People openly talked about the possibility that either Kurt had written her songs or she'd just taken them. That idea is only supported even more when you realize that Hole couldn't write anything after Kurt died. You'd think Courtney would have been able to create a few incredible albums after the trauma of that but she obviously didn't have that ability. Kurt even told a story about writing the lyrics to Heart Shaped Box and Courtney asking if she could have the song instead.
@jacket5456
@jacket5456 3 года назад
I feel like Kurt was purposefully dumbing the lyrics down, there are too many patterns and arrangements to be accidental. I think it's just something no one had heard before.

Excellent reaction! I suspect Kurt would like your takeaways from the song as his comments in interviews were similar to your thoughts about the song. As for the part about the hicks, Kurt actually didn't grow up in Seattle. He grew up in a very rural area of Washington state called Aberdeen. Aberdeen was near enough to Seattle that the band ultimately migrated there as they got big. But growing up Kurt, always a very sensitive and liberal minded kid, was very frustrated and put off by the attitudes, beliefs and politics of the rural area in which he lived. And when his band began getting notoriety, he watched as people who previously couldn't give him the time of day, cheered mindlessly along to his music. Music that was often expressing the very views he was always mocked for.

I've heard this song Kurt wrote this song for his best friend Dylan. Dylan is a drug addict just like kurt was and by "likes to shoot his gun" is not literally a gun it is meaning he likes to "shoot heroin into him". And by "he's the one that likes all the pretty songs and he likes to sing along" kurt is trying to say that his bestfriend Dylan likes all of Nirvanas best songs and he likes to sing along to them while he is "shooting up".

Great reaction and interpretation! Awhile back, I saw someone online put the two verses together and rearranged them so they read as the following lyrics with an ABAB format: Sell the kids for food We can have some more Weather changes moods Nature is a whore Spring is here again Bruises on the fruit Reproductive glands Tender age in bloom With this rearrangment, it helped me gauge the bigger picture of the verses. The lines stringed together also sounds very poetic😊

@Sori The album cover pic is a standard (probably stock photo) picture of a baby swim session, the kind where a photographer comes along for the final lesson and shoots cute underwater pics of your baby that they sell to you. It's meant to be a snapshot of a part of your child's development, not eerie. The eerie part is introduced with the dollar bill inserted into the photo; it changes everything towards the grotesque. But that's art.

sigh, While not bad, there are so much better Nirvana songs. "Big Long Now", "Aneurysm", "Negative Creep". Apart from that Temple of the Dog is a must (Say Hello to Heaven) or maybe "Hunger Strike" are basically what made Pearl Jam come into existence. Speaking of Pearl Jam, more or less every song of "Ten" is flawless. And since you already did Soundgarden, you need to listen to some of their grittier songs. Plus you already heard Estranged which is in line on the Decipher album with Pledge of Allegiance. The album tells a story of domestic violence and religion (in these songs there's a heavy religious tone. I can't think of the religion at present but I believe it's Muslim) And as I told you. This particular album got me through my own chapters of being in abusive relationship
@fjalar9470

The song is going after those that don't understand the meaning of something but still buy into it. The very first line is a reference to Jonathan Swift's satire of how to solve the famine and starvation on Ireland - sell your kids as delicacies for the rich people. Which upset a lot of people at the time that didn't understand the satire.

That frustration of not being able to articulate thought or being misunderstood reminds me a bit of a song that, controversially, Judas Priest covered called Better By You, Better Than Me. It has the chorus "Better by you, better than me. You can say what I only can see. You could tell what I wanted to be. It's better by you, better than me."
