Another fun alternate timeline experiment. What if in an effort to return to a more "raw" sound, Nirvana recorded In Utero with Jack Endino using their Bleach gear?

if they did the album with Jack, it probably would've sounded like the word of mouth session in 92, but finished.... this tone does fit the songs honestly...either way, the "What if's" in the Nirvana realm are endless, lolz.

Just a litte detail: during the Serve The Servants chorus, once he goes to the C sharp power chord, at the second part of it he puts his index finger on the low E string along with the power chord and plays a G sharp note too. You can see that on the live perfomances (and hear that, too). I think it's quite visible during the Tunnel performance and a couple of others :)

I think that the bleach tone mix perfectly with the in utero songs, cause I always had the feeling that in utero was a bleach album but with the band more mature, more aggressive and dirty.

I find myself disagreeing with many of the previous comments. IMO, Bleach riffs with In Utero tone sounds WAAAAAAAAY better than In Utero riffs with Bleach tone.

Obviously the logical continuation of this series is to use the Nirvana tones on other prominent Grunge records, Dirt with a Bleach tone would be awesome. Congrats on this series my dude, it’s been amazing

Fun fact: they did try to record In Utero with Jack in late 1992, but it didn't work out. The songs from that session were released as demos and vocals were only complete for Rape Me. Which is also the demo on WTLO.

Geffen Records did to Nirvana with Nevermind what Phil Spector did to The Beatles with Let It Be--which is to say the studio buried all the good stuff under glossy, high-end production. It would be cool if they did a dirtier re-master of Nevermind like they did with Let It Be... Naked. Take some of the compression off the guitars and vocals, let the grittier tones cut through a little more--I think it would have a drastic effect.

@@dangayle To me the sound engineering on that album polishes the (pardon the expression) grunginess of the music beyond what was necessary or desirable for the musical style. However, that's just my opinion. I'm sure that, like me, you value your own opinion a great deal more than the opinion of some random person on RU-vid.

If I may, if you’re trying to truly nail the Bleach tone, to my ears you’re using more highs and slightly less mids than Kurt did. Specifically, the distorted riffs, but some of the clean ones as well. This is just going by MY musician’s ear, but your crackers are a bit crispier. Also, the Heart Shaped Box riff was off, and not how Kurt played it. Love and appreciate your content, in any case.

It's been awhile since I've seen the video so I might be wrong but I'm pretty sure Kurt used his original Bleach Hi-Flier in the music video for Heart-Shaped Box so this is probably the most accurate sound to my ears, everything still sounds great though

The guitar I am using is a replica of the Heart Shaped Box music video guitar 🤩 He used Phase 3 Hi Fliers on Bleach, whereas this one is a Phase 4!

But I only have the Ibanez Black Eagle and don't have any amps that are similar to what he used 😩 I'd love to eventually get more Krist gear and have bass tone videos

IMO Heart Shaped Box with Bleach tone just sounds like his live tone on several shows recordings from 1993 amd 1994. Actually most of these do especially HSB and R*pe Me.

As much as I loved the bleach album, I'm glad that they didn't continue on with that sound with in utero. Not that I'm saying it was bad but more so that by changing the sound it made bleach its own unique record.

would be great, but Incesticide by compiling studio songs recorded in different periods of the band makes the guitar tone vary a lot from song to song (for example the tone of Son of a Gun is more reminiscent of the tone of Nevermind and Mexican Seafood more reminiscent of a Bleach-style tone)

I've never liked how Milk it and Tourette's sound on In utero, a fatty hard-rock sound, so I prefer From the muddy banks live versions. That Bleach sound is closer to that live raw punky sound.

Same. I like how they sound that way too, but i vastly prefer the sharp and dirty sound that the guitars and drums have on them in the live versions of those songs.

I can only imagine Courtney Love frothing at the mouth at all the money that would flow into the Nirvana brand if she gave the go ahead to release whichever cut of In Utero didn't get released in the scenario that Nirvana recorded two versions with Jack Endino and Steve Albini separately. That or she'd keep it locked always and only let small snippets come out

Chad's drumming is like a big ship sinking slowly into the ocean but still making its impact and Dave's is like a smaller airplane falling straight into it and causing a splash.

@@NirvanaGuitars dude, that WAS the actual tuning. They recorded the entire CD in drop "C"... They retuned and did it again cuz they thought it sounded terrible, but kept "Blew" in "C". Try Scentless in drop "C" and slow it down... Sounds awesome. Great video BTW, thanks for uploading.

@@k.t.5405 Thanks for watching! But I do gotta say man that that is incorrect. They recorded only 4 songs in Drop C (Blew, Scoff, Mr Moustache and Sifting) they did not like any of them except for Blew, so the other 3 were rerecorded. Check out LiveNirvana.com's Bleach sessions history, it's all there. So with 4 out of 13 songs being recorded in Drop C and only 1 actually making the album, I don't see how C could be considered the Bleach tuning

@@NirvanaGuitars Dude! Thanks for getting back to me...glad we're at least acknowledging there was MORE than just one BLEACH song in drop "C". Cool. The intended tuning for BLEACH was drop C and THAT was the original musical vision for the CD, bruh. So I think a version of In Utero in DROP C would make it a true BLEACH era tribute (I'd try a slower Very Ape in C). BTW, RU-vid : "In the Room with Nirvana and Soundgarden" min 29:20. Cheers bud!

Probably because nevermind was a weird mix of the fast, noisy, rough punk songs like Breed or Territorial (despite the production not being as "punk" or whatever, which i still like but not as much) and prettier songs like Drain You, Lounge Act and Polly, and people at the time only knew Nevermind pretty much, so what they expected of the next album was based on that.

I'd say the opposite. It sounds much better and a part of it IS sounding more metallic. Except that In Utero sounds more, like, "fat" and blunt and this sounds more fuzzy and sharp.
