Nirvana strategically using their fame to promote other artists that influenced them tells you so much about kurt and about Nirvana as a whole. Kurt - but all of them really - will always be respected by the underground for how strict their morality was when it came to how to approach being famous in the music industry. I believe that they never "sold out" and in utero is a perfect example of that.
Ahkmed TheClockKid they sold out. Every artist ends up selling out. Because name me one musician who doesn’t want to be famous and have money. Matter of fact name me one human who doesn’t want that.
Decland Girouard I definitely agree that, artistically, they didn’t sell out. But when they were in the room with the business men signing the contract, they def didn’t refuse. Their music is still awesome either way.
Mr Sea Turtle you’re 100% right. I guess “sold out” isn’t the correct term more so just jumped at the opportunity to gain fame. Which is something that no one would pass up. So it’s not like I’m blaming them or anything But I still never suggested that nirvana having talent meant they sold out. I still respect these guys immensely
‘Selling Out’ is making the album they want and expect you to make. Nirvana ALWAYS HAD CONTROL OVER EVERYTHING. They didn’t sell out in the least, and if any of you were smart, you’d recall the band realized that Sub Pop wasn’t able to support them as artists. They needed to sign to DGC.
Why shouldn't he make money from his experiences? If he was there and we want to know some of the experiences he had with Cobain, why shouldn't I have to pay a few bucks to read about them? He did the work.
@@vickius Right on. This wasn't just Kurt's life. This was Danny Goldberg's life work. His legacy will be "the guy who managed Kurt Cobain. So why shouldn't he be able to capitalize on his life's work?
I saw Nirvana at the Club Soda in Kalamazoo Michigan in the fall of 1989. Fantastic show forever etched in my mind! After their set Kurt walked through the empty dance floor of that small club and I stopped him to say how much I loved the show. There were maybe 20 people there. We talked for a bit and I sang him one of my songs. Unbelievable!!
Holy shit. I'm from Battle Creek and went to the Club Soda in the early 2000s and they had a plaque of Nirvana's 89 show. You are incredibly fortunate.
I liked how butch vig talked about nevermind. He put the tape on at his BBQ. everyone shut up and listened. when the tape was done, no one said anything, then "can you play it again?" and they again shut up and listened. they knew, as music lovers, what a great album it was.
Kurt always told people not to read too much into his lyrics. He said his song lyrics never really had an in depth explanation. I found that extraordinary.
I think his talents as a lyricist are underrated. It was probably difficult for him to be truly objective about his own work; ie., sometimes great artists can’t comprehend their own greatness. I bet if he’d lived a long enough life to distance himself from his songs, he would’ve developed a greater appreciation of his lyric writing abilities.
I bet you anything Kurt said all sorts of wrong things. He died before the internet became widespread and nobody had smartphones or even digital cameras back then. People wrote and said all sorts of rubbish back then without the fear of it being spread everywhere.
@@Mraquanetchris i haven´t read the book but i will. have you? i have a feeling it´s a good book. look, i don´t know the guy, but he really seems pretty decent to me. i think he really cared about the band. fuck, it IS showbiz after all, he wants to make a few more bucks.. i understand, i get it - and i don´t blame him. and maybe some other bands/artists wish they had a guy like him as their manager.
4840 hB.t AO So their word is automatically gold? Sorry, I love the Melvins but they didn’t have half the talent Kurt did, and he didn’t need to sell out in order to put his vision and art across. They would have easily had to sell out. Kurt never did because his visions and talent put him in a spot to where he didn’t need to
People shit on this guy for milking Nirvana but take a step back and realize if it wasn’t for this guy and others we wouldn’t have the records and the stories, so lighten up
They seem to think that Kurt was this was naive, innocent, mentally dysfunctional baby who didn't understand a single thing about the world and was confused by the most basic of concepts. Kurt knew above anyone that Nirvana was a business and treated it exactly as that. He shopped around for the record company to make them the biggest in the world, made the right connections, played the game and was incredibly savvy. Goldberg made him as famous as he wanted, he made Goldberg money and he adored Goldberg like a father. That's not to say his music wasn't sincere also but that this myth that he was some poor, confused, frightened little boy who didn't want any of it is ridiculous. He lost interest as his addiction worsened but he did everything he could to be famous.
I don't know why people are making such a big deal of this. Of course Kurt wanted to be successful, but not in the way most people think. He he wanted to do great music and art and have recognition for it and be able to make a living, meeting great artists... well, basically just have his talent recognized. But he wasn't interested with everything that was involved with being famous. I mean, the public persona and everything.
He liked being famous. He’s goal was to be the biggest and best band in the world. Unfortunately that didn’t cure his depression. He was always looking for something.
Kurt said in the about a son documentary(I think) something about nirvana's followers calling them sellouts when they first signed. Screw worrying about being a "sell out." They did their own thing and made some of the most unique music you'll ever hear. And they signed record deals and got famous. Nobody on earth is going to turn down a record deal or a lot of money because somebody back home is gonna call them a "sell out"
Yea. Exactly. And if there is ANY good reason to sell out its to be an artist. Can’t fucking be an artist without selling art. It’s the one thing you HAVE to do. People mean to say that they changed their sound to appease boring people. That’s so very often not true. Most bands that intend to please as many people as possible almost always tried to and probably just sucked at it in the beginning. “Selling out” is barely ever a thing. It’s happened but it’s a very naive way of trying to communicate a feeling of losing intimacy with a band due to them being well known. People really project their own shit onto everyone else. They really do.
I believe it was Steve Albini who said that everyone associated with the band were complete pieces of shit when he recorded in utero in 1993. He said the Nirvana guys were awesome guys but everyone else around the band, the label, management, agents, etc were all corporate dog shit.
The mention of Stevie Nicks' Bella Donna album made me remember how much I loved the duet she did with Tom Petty (R.i.P.) "Draggin' My Heart Around" which was featured on that album!! I never owned a copy of that album, but my exposure to that song was via the video for it which was on major rotation back in M-TV's first year when they only had a relative handful of videos to play per-day and was a regular feature over the years to come. That collaboration featured amongst the best male and female vocalists in the mainstream Rock genre at that time, and their combined performances on that song were complimentary to, and well-matched with, one another -- both for authentically delivering the tone of the subject matter in the lyrics and for the musical arrangement around their vocal performances.
"While all these things were very special, none were half as rewarding as having a baby with a person who is the supreme example of dignity, ethics and honesty. My wife challenges injustice and the reason her character has been so severely attacked is because she chooses not to function the way the white corporate man insists. His rules for women involve her being submissive, quiet, and non-challenging. When she doesn't follow his rules, the threatened man (who, incidentally, owns an army of devoted traitor women) gets scared. ... At this point I have a request for our fans. If any of you in any way hate homosexuals, people of different color, or women, please do this one favor for us -- leave us the fuck alone! Don't come to our shows and don't buy our records." -Cobain's liner notes to the 1992 compilation album, Incesticide.
@curragh 42 Too late now. I've been a Nirvana fan since 1991 & at this point in time, I just accept some things that come out on Nirvana. If it let's me know more about Kurt's personality, I'm all for it. Can't change what's already gonna happen anyway, so no sense in arguing.
Why are the comments roasting this guy? I found this very interesting, he's giving insight on personal initimate moments and thoughts of Kurt that were never really saw or heard of.
He says things about Kurt that don't chime with the fictional idea of Kurt they have in their head, of a weak-willed, frightened little rabbit who never ever wanted fame but was bulled into it by evil forces, a well-adjusted man destroyed by the evil of those around him.
My wife and I watch alot of true crime shows, and alot of people get put away for life with less evidence than there was with courtney being behind Kurt's death. Her handwriting practice sheet was in her backpack where she copied Kurt's writing over and over. They took all those letters she wrote and they matched every letter of the last lines of his "suicide" note
Gotta love how people think they know a dead guy better from reading and watching interviews of him over people who actually been around him. Never change internet.
kwizzeh yeah and they all clearly know Michael Jackson’s sex life better than people who slept in the same bed as he did. People are remarkable in their profound genius.
Jrrcor I believe in my heart she did I don’t like to judge , there is one and only one that can do that ! Had baby , most likely to have more control over him. She just seemed so unsupportive , wanted his fame , jealously, controlling! No empathy towards his health ! I can go on , but my dog is farting on me at this moment and I’m about to get sick lol Just like Cortney makes me sick , when you see the need of attention she needed on videos and etc.. Omg Out Of here ! Miss him though , we at least have this guy that was a absolutely a prodigy ! Keep him close and closer to our hearts when listening to his amazing music ❣️ So sorry to you
Courtney Love hired a guy named Richard Allen Wrench (stage name) to kill Kurt. Courtney had herself arrested to clear her name but after being released and finding out nobody found the body she hired a technician to install a security system in the place Kurt's body was. The same man killed El Duce, a guy who was offered $50,000 to kill Kurt but turned it down. Courtneys a murdering psychopath no talent junkie. The problem with the case was it was deemed a suicide by the police who first arrived and not by the proper homicide unit which disturbed the scene; so an investigtion will never be re-opened. He probably wouldve quit music and pursued art/painting in some way, who knows, but he loved his daughter and being a Dad, he didn't kill himself. Period.
Gish came out in May of 91 not a year before but a lot of amazing albums came out in 91 and around the time nevermind came out but nevermind blew everything away
Vanity Fair basically killed Kurt. It was the straw that broke the camel's back. People tend to forget that Danny Goldberg worked for Led Zeppelin and was already rich by the time Nirvana came along. I think Kurt gave it his best shot (as anyone would do) and accidentally overshot his goals. He didn't realize how mega big they were going to be and couldn't handle all the trappings that came with the level of success Nirvana achieved.
Yes, I agree. I was 24 at the time. Danny never advised Kurt that a journalist doesnt have to bring a video camera to a Kurt interview, a tape recorder was suffice. And that would of been a relief to Kurt not being "seen" in an interview that was not to be video taped.
He says as much and that one documentary was just his interviews they enjoyed anonymity on the level that they had before they became globally famous. You know you just couldn't go in a thrift store any more anything like that. Wish the people that enjoy that sort of thing it would be annoying to do what you did before and be recognized all the time. I'm going to go out on limb and say Elvis probably had a problem with that towards the end of his life. At some point you just want anonymity so you can just live a normal life. But for some reason modern entertainment just as a screwed up thing to people's brains and they become obsessed.
I have no problem believing that Kurt was just as ambitious as any other artist that makes it to that level of popularity, but I think he was for the right reasons which isn't something that can be said for most other celebrities imo. He had something to say and wanted as many people as possible to hear it whereas people like Courtney only pursued fame solely for the purpose of being famous. Why you pursue something is just as important as what you're pursuing.
Joan Jett and Kenny LaGuna use to come to this restaurant i worked out years ago called Vitos in Long Beach NY. Joan was so nice. I see her in town a lot especially on the boardwalk.
Dave ghrol did a good thing to move on. If your singer makes a life changing desicion you can't dwell on it. Life goes on i got alot of respect for foos for that
I’m sorry but I do not understand your comment. Life changing decision? He shot himself in the head and died. It’s not like they could’ve resumed the band. You also heard in the interview he wrote the music that’s including the drum parts.
He doesnt talk about his wife Rosemary Carroll? She was kurt and courtneys lawyer and had evidence he was murdered. She is also recorded on tape saying he was killed.
Caidema Official of course they’re not gonna mention that. He’s obviously still friends with her. They don’t care. As Steve Albini said “Everyone around Nirvana Inc., except for the band members themselves, are complete pieces of shit.”
Ask him, why courtney showed to him, this practice sheet of letters. And why they not telling anything to rosemary ( his wife and kurt and courtney attorney).
Thinking the same... Why was Rosemary more than happy to say to Tom that it was suspicious, and then clam up and never talk about it anymore? Danny wanted that money!
Nock I always thought that it was a conspiracy theory, just people grasping at anything to excuse the suicide, but after hearing that she had a practice sheet, I admit now that I don’t think it’s certain it was a suicide ... the other thing is that every public statement that Kurt was suicidal came from Courtney, not a trustworthy source at all
@@michaellawrence5387 You're responses are terrible. I swear...it's like I know on which comment where there will be a stupid reply and it's always from you. Always.
.....there's a interview where Iggy pop siad that "Kurt had to die because he made a lot of people money".....I can't seem to find it anymore but Iggy siad that
@@califtomNo he didn't. Take the time to do a little bit of research & digging, and you'll find that it isn't even a matter of opinion. If your mind can comprehend functioning for something like that
@@theyoyoyo7833 yes he did. cite the source for your research and "digging". you have an authentic note and a victim with a history of depression. Kurt very clearly ended his own life.
@@theyoyoyo7833 I agree its not a matter of opinion. Kurt unquestionably took his own life. That's what every shred of physical evidence in this case says.
SomeKinda DruidDude And don’t forget timing; both Nirvana and The Beatles had great music, but they also had excellent timing for when they first struck in the mainstream.
@Ian Curtis Courtney is doing everything and I mean EVERYTHING she can to really nail in the suicide theory because a sequel to "Soaked In Bleach" is in the making.
@Ian Curtis you're right that Tom did say that there were things he was saving for when the case is reopened, but he also said at a different time, that there wasn't enough time to fit all the evidence into one movie, so they tried to just get out the most important information. There's so much more information though, you can tell by reading cobaincase.com that so much had been left out, but it's because there wasn't enough room. I think about the facts that were left out of the first movie, and really look forward to the second one!! I don't know if I'd commit to the case never being reopened, but I understand your thoughts on that because I've thought it too, and that might be the case sadly, but did you happen to take a look at the thousands upon thousands of people that left hate comments on Courtney's page after "SIB" came out?? She had to go in and block so many people, it took her weeks to do it!!! That and removing the comments. From what I saw at that time, we were a lot closer than what I'd thought we'd be!! Maybe this next movie will not only shed more light on more things surrounding the case, but as a result, get more public outcry for the case to reopen. The thing is to never give up!! Plus I think about the law of attraction and visualize the day she's locked up, and this new movie being the catalyst for that. It could happen!!
If seems like there’s a cover up that’s bigger than Courtney covering something up. It seems like the police are really working against it, even though I’m reality it should be taken seriously.
….after watching Get Back, Yoko was a very respectful person and didn’t hurt anything….I wish Kurt had seen Get Back, the perception of Yoko has changed.
I grew up in the Seattle area. I saw Nirvana when they were playing battle of the bands at high schools. I'm a fan of Kurt's, of Nirvana, of all the "grunge" music that came out of my home town. Listening to Danny Goldberg compare Kurt and Courtney to John and Yoko makes me puke. Guys like Goldberg who swooped in to cash in on (and generate) the hype that swirled around Nirvana in 1991-1992 are nothing but corporate greed pigs of the highest order. The sad part was that everybody, even the most casual fan, much less those closest to Kurt, could see how TERRIBLE Courtney was, both as a human being in general, and as a "partner" for Kurt. Goldberg was at best an enabler of the disfunction that ultimately destroyed Kurt, all the while lining his pockets. While it is nice to laud Kurt's talent and artistic vision post mortum, and portray him as being "competitive", people like Danny Goldberg and Courtney Love seem to use such praises as a means to exculpate themselves from the tremendous harm they did to him at the time, and entirely avoid taking any responsibility for the truth, which is--> they were the very agents most directly responsible for his tragic, and preventable, suicide.
Heroin and depression was Kurt's downfall and if u want to hate on Courtney then u must hate on Kurt because he loved her and married her! Problem is he also married heroin and couldn't get out!
That's a load of absolute bs. Cobain seeked out labels, recorded demos, signed a contract and recorded music with a producer- and then it was distributed and SOLD....lol The "whole bohemian purity of the artist surrounded by corporate greed" is a naive and shallow perspective on how the world runs. This guy has EVERY SINGLE right to cash in on his PERSONAL experience with such a huge band and eccentric personality.
@@Hurtz2Pee123 kurt was pussy struck. And when he realized it it was too late. Simple. They were together for almost three years. Within those years kurt started smoking regularly and all his shit he s made and built up is hers in only 3 three years with her he dies . She s said. If I dont have an impact on this world I'm gonna be close to someone who does.
Blaming others for someone's suicide is extremely distasteful. No one is to blame. Kurt Cobain had a plethora of problems and didn't deal with them accordingly... sadly. Not because he didn't want to, but because he couldn't. If he'd had a happy upbringing, for instance, he wouldn't have got involved with drugs... Courtney Love made the decision to improve her life for her daughter, but he was far gone into his depression and drug use. Fame was a bad ingredient into the mix. Not to mention his undiagnosed stomach problem that was so horrible. Many fans direct their hurt from his passing to his wife. As a wife myself I can tell you it's very hard to change my husband's mind once it's set. Finally, how would you feel reading your comment if you were his daughter!?
"I was talking to Courtney about the book.." She said Kurt was just as ambitious as her?Kurt slogged his guts out, lived in poverty and toured for years to get where he was..Courtney destroyed everyone in her path on her way to fame and got knocked up to a rock star within weeks of meeting him. The only thing those two had in common were a kid and heroin.
Truly a most excellent interview! Just caught up with this. Regrettably missed the #Rizzoli signing in New York last Friday! hey everybody, don't forget, #RECORDSTOREDAY is this Saturday April 13th!!!
@@johannm1524 His wife is Rosemary Carroll, Kurt and Courtney's attorney and godmother to Francis; she believed that Courtney had something to do with Kurt's death, she's the one who found the practice handwriting sheets in C.L.'s backpack. But, she was told "influenced" to keep her mouth shut and hasn't spoken about it since, even denies ever having talked with Tom Grant(PI that thinks Kurt was murdered) even though there's recordings of her talking about it.
Danny talks about Rosemary's involvement with Tom Grant in the book. It's really irritating that a lot of people commenting have so much shit to say without reading the book that this video is about.
Kurt did not kill himself. I didn't get why he had to go outta his way to say that in public until he revealed later that he's kinda friends with Courtney. At least biz relationships.
@@josephbowles4995 Someone paid by Courtney Love.. No doubt. This guy is nothing but another asshole on Courtney's payroll, who is exploiting and, of course, profiting from a murder victim.
I find it funny, not in a ha ha way, that his wife thinks there was foul play. She is actually recorded thinking this. Now I am thinking out loud. I wonder is Mr Goldberg had any idea what would befall Kurt.
hey was competitive with Eddie Vedder? you mean layne staley he even is quoted saying that layne was basicly on a nother never and there's a guy chris cornell
Who was quoted? Kurt? I never read anything said by him about Layne. I know he made a joke about shooting cocaine with them all night to Nardwuar but never about Layne himself.
There was this rant from Courtney online telling of a funeral company that abused Kurt’s body. Apparently funeral home employees danced with his corpse and carved the word “fag” into his skin. Very disturbing. It was like a 1720 word rant from an obvious messed up Courtney. Did any of you hear of this?
He has always been obsessed with CL. Lot of suits in the industry were. She thinks like them. All calculation and constructed image. They don’t get into the industry for the money alone, though they’re the ones who usually make most of it. They’re there for the power and recognition. Look at his eyes glaze over and his lip curls when asked if he’s ever watched the videos of Butch Vig. He doesn’t care about or understand the music. Though he loves discussing being in Chicago show when they “met”, and being in NY for SNL. It’s all a commodity to him. He and CL did a lot of whispering together before Kurt died. It made Rosemary Carroll suspicious. That’s why she looked in CL‘s backpack. How much he lied for her to cover the VF article. The PR machine kicked into high gear damage control to cover her, and she was relentless. She reveled in it and he despaired. It’s too bad he stuck up for her publicly in the media and didn’t tell them what she was doing in the end. That VF article was beginning of the end. He should have seen the warning in it. D-berg makes it sound like it was “other” sources, but it’s clearly her. She has always been the one championing drug use in the media. Wanted that Sid and Nancy image. “We went on a binge,” she says, referring to a period last January when Nirvana was in New York to appear on Saturday Night Live. “We did a lot of drugs. We got pills and then we went down to Alphabet City and Kurt wore a hat, I wore a hat, and we copped some dope. Then we got high and went to S.N.L. After that, *I* did heroin for a couple of months.” She was upset because Hershberg quoted her instead of fawning over her when she flapped her lips. They had a rep in the first place due to her penchant for over-sharing and her desperate desire for attention positive or negative. She was just pissed off because the article was accurate and came with consequences that she for once had to pay for.
@@califtom Well “bro” the forensics don’t support suicide. I’ve discussed this case with Cyril Wecht re: the cadaveric spasm and PMR post mortem redistribution of drugs. And if you think a corpse is capable of picking up a shotgun and they’re capable of still finding 1.52 MGS per liter in a corpse that is in decay, you should probably shshsh and go the fuck back to sleep. This isn’t fringe theory anymore my dude. Law-enforcement on down knows this is bullshit. I’ve spoken to several of them and other pathologists, and they will laugh your ass around the block. You clearly do not know fuck all about this case.
Zee Vahzav the more money they make, more their life costs, better house, car, etc. All of the sudden they are surrounded with other rich people, so it feels like they don’t have that much, and so on and so on
I disagree not only can most people not distinguish the difference between the vig versions of SLTS and Andy's but the choice of amps and mics and studio has a huge if not bigger impact on why it sounds that way. Then of course the band itself obviously.. they are making the arrangements. Even just watching that thing they mentioned where big isolates the tracks- it already sounds like the finished product just rougher.
If you think Yoko Ono broke up the Beatles, you don't know much about them other than what you learned from the zeitgeist through osmosis as opposed to any modicum of actual research done for yourself. Also, STILL claiming that is about as flaccidly edgelord as you can get.
