Nissan Frontier - 10 Years of Ownership Review (200,000 miles)

I have owned my 2006 Nissan Frontier for over 10 years and put 200,000 miles on it, so I wanted to share my thoughts on it (both the GOOD and the BAD). More importantly, would I buy this mid-size Pickup truck again? I hope that this video helps people that might be looking at buying a Second Generation Nissan Frontier.
Some issues I have had:
-Secondary Timing Chain Tensioners Replaced
-Cross Contamination of Coolant and ATF (Radiator Replaced)
-Center Support Bearing worn out
-Fuel Level Sensor Replaced
-Coolant Hose Failure
The majority of my ownership has been positive. It still is a ton of fun to drive, and I look forward to driving it for more years to come.

3:24 The years in which this issue was the most common was in the 2005-2010 models (ATF and Coolant Cross Contamination).

@William Vagabond FWIW, my 2010 Xterra has a bit over 149k miles on it and it has the first update radiator (Calsonic: 21460-ZL11A). Even though it got the revised part, It had the warranty enhancement for the radiator - which I believe was Nissan being extra cautious. I have not had any problems with mine, and I am only aware of a couple of 2010's (X or Frontier) with that part # radiator that had the problem. What I have chosen to do is maintain and closely monitor the fluids, however If I had a pre Aug-2009 with the older Radiator (P/N: 21460-EA205, -EA215, or -EA265) I would replace or bypass the radiator immediately as they are all problems waiting to happen, with those P/N SMOD WILL happen, it's a matter of when. The RE5R05A trans costs around $5k to replace, with new, after you have SMOD. Here's a link with some info on this and part #'s. Link is to Xterra forum, but info applies to Frontier also. www.thenewx.org/threads/list-of-calsonic-radiator-part-numbers-associated-with-smod.220778/ Oh, and I remember reading somewhere regarding the secondary timing chains and guides that the revised parts were being used in production starting with 2010 models, and I can confirm that I have not had any issues with mine.

@William Vagabond you can also bypass the radiator coolant loop all together and add another transmission oil cooler if you want in front of the radiator or just straight line it there's already a small cooler

i bought an 08 V6 SE king cab in november of 07, got the strawberry milkshake of death in it at around 100/150k. got the tranny fixed drove it to 341k. sold it for $2400 and bought a 2019 SV king cab, these trucks RULE.

doug lejeune I also bought a mint condition 2007 SE V6 king cab back in 2012 with 102,000 miles on it. I didn’t have it a month when I found out about the radiator issues. I immediately when out and inspected the truck and sure enough, it still had the original radiator. I immediately drove my other vehicle over to auto-zone and bought a new radiator and installed it without issue. I got lucky and 7 years later, it’s still running strong with 170k miles on it.

As a contractor, I've had so many different trucks over the years. Mostly old, beat up vans and pickups. When my 1996 F150 lost its brakes, (and after my divorce), I decided to do something for myself and grabbed a 2019 SV Crew Cab which included a truck cap. Bought with 21k miles about four months ago and im just about to turn 36k. Best truck I've ever owned. Comfortable, powerful, hauls a trailer beautifully and looks great (mine is white). So glad I got a Frontier.

I just bought a 2019 Frontier S 4x4 4.0 liter V6 crew cab. I bought it because it's the last truck in America that hasn't fallen victim to all of the new age tech that I don't want in my truck. So far I love it. It runs and drives and performs exactly the way I expected it to. I hope to get 20 years and 200,000 plus miles out of it and I think I will. I appreciate the review on your truck, it helped inform my decision.

Well the Frontier is getting a new smaller v6 for 2020 and a new body for 2021 though the body style has been in use in Australia for a few years now. Looks too girly with swept headlights IMHO. I won't buy another because I LOVE my 06 with manual trans AND the 6' bed, I often haul a dirtbike or two and with one I can turn it sideways and close the tailgate with an inch to spare. I often go dirtbike camping and stuff a bunch of gear in the bed too so having a closing tailgate is a must, I know.. bed extender, but that has huge gaps so no thanks!!

I bought a 2007 Long Bed new. No strawberry milkshake with mine, but I did have to replace the timing chain. My power windows were getting a little iffy towards the end. My additional complaint was rusting that I had on the top corners of the windshield. I had a 6-speed manual and thanks to speed shifting I kept the same clutch for all 205,000 miles. After those 205,000 miles I upgraded to a 2018 Tacoma SR5. I lasted 18 months in the Taco. I just kept missing my old Frontier. This fall I traded my Taco (with 37,000 miles on it) for a new 2019 Frontier Long Bed. Since everyone wants the newest design and gadgets, I was able to trade with no extra $$ to get the new Frontier. I love it. It is pretty much the exact same truck that I drove for 11 years and am looking forward to another 10 to 15 years with this truck.

My xterra got the drive shaft vibration. I was told by Nissan the driveshaft was not serviceable and I'd have to replace it. I think they wanted $800 at the time. Instead I took the driveshaft out (easier than changing the oil in my opinion) and took it to a driveshaft shop for a re-balance. They charged me $105, I put the driveshaft back in and it was good as new.

Love the Hankook Dynapros. I did discover on latest plug change that I had oils down the spark plug wells. Replaced with OEM valve covers and while at it did new boots, pcv, new gaskets, and replaced a few worn hoses. Runs like new again!!

Thanks for a real honest long term review. So much of what gets posted on RU-vid is someone who borrowed a car from a dealership and they spend a few minutes with it and call that a “review” - when in reality they know very little about the vehicle. I just purchased a new Nissan Frontier 2019 SV 4x4 crew cab and was happy to hear that you’ve had such great service with your truck. I am a stickler for maintenance and cleanliness of my vehicles and it was great to buy something brand new after having only used stuff for almost 20 years. Great video review!

Pulling a trailer and hauling stuff. A champ in the snow and mud too. The only non maintenance thing i have replaced is a battery cable end at the dealer. 70 bux installed. Thanks for an awesome review! Just ordered a white Pro-4X - for the purpose of daily commute and overland trips. After a long discussion with me, myself, and I, torn between Tacoma TRD Pro vs Pro-4X vs ZR-2 vs new Ranger FX4 (and Yes, I've looked at Gladiator too...at $60k..that is too much for questionable quality of Jeep), I've decided I needed something that can tank through Los Angeles traffics as well as sand dunes and rocks of the Death Valley desert. FYI, I've test driven all - and have driven alot on 2017 TRD Sport from work. Winning points are as followings: 1. Dana 44 rear and locker - cant beat that! 2. Beefier Transfer case (ZR-2 one is better but ZR-2 does NOT have sunroof~!) than Tacoma. 3. Yes, Sunroof...did I mention sunroof? Nicely tucked between roof rack where I can tie down Mad Max victims 4. Bilstein shocks. Personally I prefer them over Fox because of comfort (yes i will be spending over 90% of time on paved road). Fox is good on off road, but so as Bilstein - and its way more coushier than Fox. Personally! 5. Price - its reasonable...I wouldn't call $35~37k a low price but, it sure is better than close to $45k ~ $50k for TRD Pro or ZR-2...almost $10k cheaper. 6. No non-sense infotainment system (Toyota...you listening?)...well it really doesn't have one. I don't need one from the manufacturer. I can upgrade the infotainment system myself with 7" Samsung Galaxy and root it with CyanogenMod or SlimRoms - which will perform better than ANY infotainment system out there in the market - GUARANTEED! (it will cost me about $2~300 including a bracket - and few hours tuning it). 7. Reliable - nearly 15 years of design which is unchanged allowed Nissan to work out all the bugs - sure, it still looks pretty...I guess...it's like you are still dating your girlfriend from highschool into your mid-40s...oh, wait. 8. Ride quality - Much better than Tacoma for sure. Could be as good as ZR-2 if driven properly. On par with Ranger...and anything is better than Gladiator. 4.0L engine is much more livelier than that of Tacoma. Even though Ranger and ZR-2 is smoother (on 3.6L GM), Frontier is close enough...but it gets thirsty easily I hear. Anyhoo - you cannot go wrong with any of 4 trucks mentioned above - Gladiator too...just my take on it. May the 4X4 be with you.

Great thoughts on the Frontier and comparable trucks. I find it pretty on par with why I love the Frontier too. I also own an FJ Cruiser which shares much of the Tacoma options (2007 model), so I have some experience with both. Hope that the Frontier you ordered serves you well long term.

I have enough annoying issues with it that I sold it in under 2 years. Now I find myself in the position of shopping for a midsize truck and I'm considering a used Frontier because I think it's still the best midsize truck from a value perspective. I'm looking for 2012 or newer with under 100,000 miles, but low mileage trucks under $15k are near impossible to find. Plus used truck prices are absurd these days.

Nice! how much did you spend on it, if i may be so rude to ask? Also do you use it as a daily driver? I am currently looking into buying a pick up just because I love em not for hauling stuff. I have a Max. Budget of about 10k but I don’t know which one to get. Either a used Nissan Frontier, or a used Toyota of some sort. Any suggestions/tips would be appreciated.

@@hageneesje0709 I bought it a year old with 16k on it for $24k. I talked them down a bit. I use mine as a daily too. Not the best MPG but it's a truck. You will pay more for the Tacoma, but to be honest. The Frontier has been around for ever. Nissan has worked all the kinks out. It's a much more reliable truck.

Great review. My dad has a 01 Supercharged Frontier he bought new. Doing well with over 313,000 miles. Still on original alternator as well. I replaced the starter at 299k. He also has a 15 Frontier. I'm glad I ran across this video. A week ago I traded in my faithful 2011 Ranger that I've had for 11 years and purchased a 2019 Frontier SV crew cab 2WD with the value package. (Dual zone climate, heated seats, more speakers, bed liner, track system and bed extender among other things). Just over 34K on the clock. Was a lease in Miami, super clean, no dents, dings and very minimal wear on the interior. Everything works perfectly and I love how it drives. I'm impressed with how much headroom I have (I'm 6'0). I am also one of those that prefers things like a key ignition and less gadgets on my truck. I'm glad to see that long time Frontier owners are having this good of an experience with their trucks. This makes me even happier about my decision!

Have a 2011 Suzuki Equator which is a rebadged Frontier. No issues except I keep getting a PO101 code in the winter. Cleaned the MAF sensor many times. Still get the code. Scanner shows everything’s running like it should. Otherwise it’s a strong truck. Only gripe I have is the the turning radius sucks. Great value! Paid 22,900 new!

Down to earth review for a down to earth truck. I have a 2008 that just passed 197,000 miles and love it! Just replaced the ball joints and front brakes. I've driven in a new Tacoma and it was very plush with a lot of fancy gadgets but didn't feel as solid as my Frontier.

Thanks for taking the time to watch. I have some similar thoughts on the Tacoma, mainly it feels like more of an "effort" to drive. The seating position, foot position on the pedals, etc. The Frontier is more comfortable to me, and has a more solid feeling drive. All the best

In 2012 I believe they refreshed the head unit and a slightly refreshed front end. I own a 2019 Pro 4X with premium package and very happy. Has excellent rockford fosgate 10 speaker with sub. BT works good and has GPS/SAT and hands off phone works great and will display texts on screen (touch screen). The head unit is very functional and easy to use. Not sure why all the hate on it. They added back up sensors with back up camera. On premium package you get sunroof, leather, heated seats, 8 way power seats, roof rack which is worth the money. I got mine for 35K out the door. This level of options will cost between 5K-10K more with the competition. The main positive is the 5 speed auto. REally nice tune and predictable shift patterns. This is like the 4runner or tundra. Non of that active learning shift patterns that can be problematic with gear searching or early shifting (torque starving). Outside a 45K dollar Ranger this probably has the best engine/transmission tune. Better then Colorado/Taco. By far.

I told my father that I was planning on getting a Dodge Challenger as my second car and he really seemed disappointed. A couple months later I told him maybe a truck would be better and his eyes lit up and the first two trucks he told me to look at were the Nissan Frontiers and 2nd gen Tacoma’s. He drives a first gen Tundra and loves his trucks, really solid. I’m hoping to get a frontier within the next year once work picks back up again.

I have had my 2011 Frontier 4x4 SV Crew Cab for 9+ years. 181k miles and love it! It's my daily driver. I use it for hunting, mountainbike trips and have used it for trail maintenance. Also general hauling and occasional towing. It performs well. I am ready to spend money overhauling it. Going from 70s to 75s on tires Bilstein shocks, Hellwig rear sway bar, TRW front springs upper and lower ball joints. Tie rods and ends. New sway bar bushings and sway bar end links. Engine is getting a K&N intake, Jet Mass Air Sensor, Jackson Wire Helix throttle body spacer, a Stillen under drive pulley and a Bully Dog GT Performer programmer. Next year I will go for exhaust. Also when the brakes need replacing I want drilled and slotted rotors. This truck is staying with me for a while longer!

I had a 2006 se v6 with manual trans. Best and most enjoyable truck I've ever had. Same story. 10 years 196000 miles. Did the fuel censor under warranty. Replaced an AC blower fan resister for $80 bucks. Never a break down. Did a starter at 180 and a crank censor at the same time. Both easy. I did a tune up at 110000 and the plugs still looked new. First brakes at 90 and the radiator went at 195. Its the only vehicle I've ever missed. I did a lot of towing and off road. Great truck.

My dad had a 2007 Frontier King Cab 4WD. He really didn't keep up with maintenance on it and made it to 300K then got into an accident. The airbags deployed and there was front end damage but the truck still ran great. The insurance company didn't want to repair the truck so they gave him $4500 for it. The truck was a work truck so naturally it wasn't in the best of shape, so we were surprised he got that much. With the insurance money he bought a 2012 Pathfinder and it has been good to him since. I am looking at a 2011 Frontier SL tomorrow. It is fully loaded and I am excited about it. If everything looks good I'll more than likely buy it.

I've had 3 frontiers. Currently own a 2wd Silver 2014 SV, V6, crew cab with 59k miles ( purchased in mid 2016 with 21k miles ). Certified pre-owned ( still getting free oil changes, tire rotation and inspections at Nissan dealership ) Great truck. If I had to nit-pick I'd mention the lack of gas mileage ( average around 17mpg with mixed driving ), the lack of bluetooth music streaming capability ( must use an aux cord ), my usb thumb drive contains about 800 music files ( songs ) but this 2014 factory radio only sees 255 files. Heading to Florida from Virginia on 1 July 2020 in my Frontier. When I return ( maybe before ) I'm having the transmission, rear differential and brake fluids changed as recommended by Nissan. I need to investigate a replacement radio with touch screen and all of the modern features.

I LOVE the utilitrack system!! I often haul a dirtbike or two and with the system I can place my tiedowns damn near perfect to get the most secure strapping point. Also the channel has the same spacing as Superstrut C channel stuff at lowes and home depot so you can get some of the nuts and washers and an eyebolt and make your own tie down points. I have around 8 with 1/4" eye bolts and another 4 with 3/8" eye bolts as well as the 4 oem ones. Did I mention I haul dirt bikes and also use the truck to move a few times?

Changed out my carrier bearing today and it was a good move to make. Step 1. Remove the driveshaft assembly. 2. Buy a new carrier bearing (mine cost around $70 at O'Reilly's). 3. Take the assembly to a reputable shop to hydraulic press off the old and the new one on (charged me $30). 4. Reinstall the refreshed D/S assembly and you're back on the road. Test drove the truck this evening and everything is smooth and quiet!
