---
Today we’re going to look at one of the best from Japan - the new Nissan Pathfinder
And one of the best from Korea - The Hyundai Palisade
And we’re going to start with a very familiar face to the channel…the Hyundai palisade
We covered this car during the press launch in 2018 and then again last year for its facelift, but if you missed those videos I’ll recap here and we’ll start where we always do…under the skin and behind the wheel
The Hyundai Palisade is their flagship - it’s a 3 row unibody SUV and that means it’s big and heavy
4,300 lbs to be precise
The Palisade, interestingly only comes in 1 engine configuration
And even more interestingly, that configuration is a N/A V6…and a big one at that - 3.8 liters
It’s 2022 and an over 2 ton vehicle is driving around with no turbos and batteries…that sounds illegal!
This 3.8L v6 makes 291 hp and 262 lbft which aren’t crazy numbers, but it feels plenty peppy for going to the store
0-60 is done in just under 7 seconds
You’re probably more interested in fuel economy..and while this doesn’t have turbos or a CVT or batteries it does make an attempt to conserve fuel by running on an Atkinson cycle
The result is about 23 mpg in mixed driving. Would a CVT help? Sure, but the 8 speed auto is more natural for people. You can order a FWD Palisade, but at least in WI here…especially in the winter you’ll want H-Trac AWD. And then there’s the ride…
And the ride is shockingly good for something this size and weight.
The suspension isn’t adjustable, but it doesn’t matter when it’s tuned this well.
It soaks up bumps really well and at the same time it’s sharp enough at controlling the body to do corners like something that weighs 1000 lbs less
I’ve loved being behind the wheel of this thing in the past, and I still love it today
This is now the 5th generation of Pathfinder and one of the first new products from the “new” Nissan
Their first order of business was to make it feel much more lux than it ever has before
One of the big changes toward this upscale feeling actually came last generation where the pathfinder ditched it’s 4x4 body on frame truck roots for a more car-like unibody architecture
However, I wouldn’t say this totally abandons it’s roots - You still get a commanding high up feeling behind the wheel
Aside from the seating position, the ride is very comfortable. The suspension is damped almost as well as the Hyundai, but the cabin isolation and refinement is very good. Also feels roomier in here, taller than the palisade.
But let’s talk about what powers this 4600 pound 3-row beast
Shockingly, just like the Palisade, the Nissan only comes in one engine configuration and that configuration is a N/A V6.
It’s only 3.5 liters as opposed to the 3.8 in the Hyundai and it makes less power too
284 hp and 259 lbft
The PAthfinder, for this gen also gets rid of the terrible CVT transmission for a 9 speed auto
So quick recap:
The Nissan is 300 lbs heavier
It has a smaller engine
It makes less power
But it has one more gear
On top of this, it can also tow 6K pounds, that 1K more than the Palisade
The digital cluster is really good
Heated seat, cooled seat, just lacking massage
The Bose system is “meh”
The seating position is a bit weird
ACP, AA, Pro pilot assist is great
GRIPES: remote start (doesnt always work, finicky, infotainment system is a tad sluggish. The fan speed seems weak for this size vehicle (heater efficiency isnt up to snuff) you mentioned you didnt like the start/stop feature well I never got a chance to even experience it until it warmed up above 30 degrees because i had the heat on full blast and since that draws so much power, it actually wont allow the car to shut off.
Rear seats are very nice
Lots of room
Lots of amenities
Third row is quite small
Headrests block visibility
Wth 3rd row up you have very little trunk space
From first impressions, I miss the multi-toning you get with the Nissan saddle brown
You get a lot of the same features - digital cluster, ACP, AA
Highway driving assist is VERY good (great systems in each)
The headliner in here is suede and very nice
The quilting on theseats feels a little more up market
Piano black?
The seating position feels more natural in this
Second row is very similar to the nissan
Good space, comfortable, lots of toys
The third row feels a little bigger perhaps, but still not place I want to spend time
The trunk with the third row up is small as well

I’ve own a hyundai and thank god it was only 3 yrs lease. My biggest complain is poor quality interior which they were falling apart, also the power steering was making these weird noise when you make a 3 pont turn. I was out of the country for a year the car was parked outside knowing i had to get my brakes replaced eventually before i had to return the car back due to winter season. I was able to drive the car for 4 months before my lease expired all of sudden started hearing this squealing brake noise whenever driving into drive-thru. I got the brakes done at hyundai dealer and they said everything was ok. Just recently we’ve purchased 2022 Nissan Pathfinder SL premium and my wife loves it. The deal breaker was the looks and no more cvt transmission which was their achilles heel prior to 2022. Palisades, telluride and highlander are dime a dozen where i live. One more thing my insurance is way cheaper than the Hyundai!!

Thanks for your comment! I am shopping and was wondering why everyone loves the Palisade so much. I can’t get over all the terrible manufacturing faux pas since the 2000s with Kia, and now that they’re related to Hyundai I have to group them together. It just feels like a company that is trying to stay on trend, but isn’t trying to build something that will last you absolutely forever. Also interesting note on insurance! Appreciate it.

Having owned 2 Hyundai cars in a row, the longer warranty is needed. The first car, a Sonato, the engine died. The second car, Santa Fe XL Limited, the transmission and ECM died. I would go with the Nissan if you plan on driving the car longer than 4 years.

I loved your review wish you had given more time on AWD systems working on snow or off-road for both together. I do like Nissan saddle back color interior but Palisade Calligraphy is way above in quality. Stitch and finish are great. Black is little dark but that’s own choice. The value Palisade offers is like $80k vehicle. They are doing great.

Recently purchased a 2022 Palisade Calligraphy AWD: some areas for improvement as noted from an actual owner: add power folding exterior side mirrors, add sunglass holder; add illumination for the overhead light buttons and allow for top trims to have at least as an option the bench seat; and last but not least, consider adding hybrid powertrain as is offered on many other Hyundai products and further helps compete this with Toyota Highlander Hybrid. PS - keep up the great reviews.

I drove a rental pathfinder with only 30k in miles. It was a 2020 and it was the worst car I have ever driven. Horrible. Nissan is the worst Japanese car brand for reliability whereas Hyundai is the best Korean Brand on reliability and they are neck and neck with Toyota and Honda. Only thing is Hyundai has more features for the same or less money vs Toyota or Honda.

Pathfinder doesn’t have front passenger seat height adjustment, the A/C is extremely weak , heating system wonky, drives/feels like a truck, suspension is rough . It may look like a luxurious SUV but it definitely doesn’t drive like one (look up the many reviews on other channels). Doesn’t matter how beautiful it is if the engineers can’t build a properly functioning family hauler. Palisade may look dowdy so I’ll go for the Telluride for sporty appearance and better auto engineering than the Pathfinder.
