Here is why these 10 SUVs are rated so low. We want a car that’ll keep going and not have us stranded on the side of the highway in the middle of the night. It’s easy to think a brand-new car will solve automobile troubles, but this isn’t always the case. We dug into Consumer Reports’ latest reliability data, to provide you with the 10 least reliable new SUVs you may wanna avoid.
CR auto survey looked at 17 things that can go wrong with a car, from squeaky brakes to all-wheel-drive system failures. The researchers then examined at least two model years of data for each car along with CR’s rigorous test drive feedback. Some of these SUVs are not only unreliable, but they are also under-powered and over-priced.

Maybe Land Rover doesn't sell enough cars to get enough surveys and reports? They sell much less than any of the SUVs on the list. Also, most of the cars on the list were all new or nearly all new models (2-3 years after redesign). After several years, most of the kinks have been worked out. A first year model during a pandemic with labor and supply shortages will likely have a lot more problems than the average NEW vehicle. Most new vehicles have something like 1 problem (or what surveyed customers consider a problem) per vehicle on average (or around 100 problems per 100 vehicles) in the first 3 years according to JD Power. Many cars will have 0 problems, but a few lemons might have 10 or 20 or more problems. So a brand new generation model with teething problems or more lemons that year might average 1.5 or 2 problems per vehicle in the first 3 years and be in the bottom of the rankings. But even these worst cars weren't getting a huge number of cars with problems or a huge number of problems, just noticeably more than the average new car which is getting more reliable than ever. These weren't 5+ year old vehicles with high miles or well out of warranty where EVERYTHING turns to dookie in the least reliable models, but this was based on "predicted reliability" which is hogwash. You can't judge the overall reliability of a model based on its first year on the market...

BMW and AUDI too. They both sell more than enough SUVs to make CR's testing list, and are both more likely to break than a couple of the SUV's on this list. CR lost most of their credibility long ago.

I had my GV 80 with zero issues for two years. It just got killed by a drunk driver, and its top safety rating paid off. I walked out without a scratch, with both cars being write offs. As for value, it’s got all the features of far more expensive cars except for the option for those people who want a 500+hp engine. I have no idea how it can be on this list.

Half the time you spent on talking about the GV80 was about it's cost, which has nothing to do about the topic of this list. Proving you couldn't find much at all wrong with the car. But in regards to the cost, it's much cheaper than it's direct competition when similarly equipped.

lmao what are u talking about? GV80 can go for 65K for a 4 cylinder, so there is no value. I would rather get me a Lincoln Aviator, which is actually the true value king and competitor to the GV80 in the segment. Hell I'd even rather get the new MDX over the GV80 too since the Koreans is asking way too much and too confident. Aviator starts at 51K and GV80 48K, so on the first glance the GV80 is undercutting the Lincoln. However not only does the Aviator also has RWD, but comes standard with a base 3.0L Twin Turbo Ecoboost V6 with more horsepower and torque than either the 2.5 or the optional 3.5 of the GV80. Also in the GV80 you need to pay extra 11K on top of the 48K starting price to get the 3.5 (and still don't have as much power), so comparatively spec by spec, GV80 is more expensive. Of course the Black Label Aviator is most expensive than the GV80 but you get more ownership and membership features that you don't get in the GV80. Not to mention the Aviator is bigger vehicle and can tow and haul more as well. Hell even a front wheel drive QX60 mommy mobile can tow more than the GV80. Ecoboost is also proven to be reliable with the 3.5L reaching north of 300000 miles.

My wife has owned a 2018 Tiguan SE and the only issue she ever had, was one of fuel injectors went dead at around 30k due to a faulty connection, and it was covered under the warranty. She traded it in, at 48k, for a 2022 Tiguan SE. Neither car has ever given us any major issues. My wife absolutely loves her Tiguan. I had a 2018 Tiguan SEL and the only issue I had, was that the previous owner failed to get the recall done for the sunroof drains, and it leaked in a carwash. The dealership I bought it at, wasn't a VW dealer, and they weren't aware of the recall. Took to the local VW dealership for the leak and they replaced the sunroof drains, carpeting, sound baffling, and padding. Zero issues, besides the leak, and I loved having it. Traded it at 65k, for a 2018 Atlas SE w/tech, and had that for 2 yrs. Traded it earlier this year for a 2023 Atlas SE w/tech and can't see myself driving anything else.

Hmm I dunno about this. We have a '21 Aviator and other than a rear view camera recall we haven't had any problems with our Aviator. Also they said they had the most comfortable seats of any SUV. No they don't, at least if you have the 30way massaging seats. The seat bottoms get really hard after a couple hours behind the wheel. If I got another one I would pass on the over-rated massaging seats in favor of a little more cushion on the butt...:)

But the *reality* is it’s neither German nor Japanese, it’s South Korean and Hyundai Motors who is notorious for class action lawsuits here in the U.S. makes them. So when they reach 6 months, 7 months, 8 months, etc. of little to no issues these customers are eager to deem them “reliable” as they don’t have many other real world examples to go off of and it’s just nerves and wishful thinking. Ford had to buy it back. It was our 3rd Explorer,...so we were kind of surprised how sucky this new redesigned model turned out to be.

With the GM/Chevy Yukon/Tahoe being based on the large fullsize SUV's category, what other manufacturers have vehicles in this category? Ford Expedition and?....... Being in a category with 2-4 models from difference manufacturers makes the odd's of being on the list much higher, Also I would say you see 8-10 tahoes/Yukons on the road to one Expedtion, as mentioned, they get used in high mileage application's like Limo's also I see the Police using them in certain places also. My mom has been driving Tahoes for years, I don't remember the model year of her current one, but it has 150,XXX miles on it right now, and its hasn't been to mechanic for any major work, not even middle of road type repairs, this is truck also driven in the upper midwest where it see's harsh winter conditions, and it is also used to pull a enclosed car trailer for hundreds of miles. That said, GM did recently switch to a all new independent rear suspension on these SUV's, so it is not vetted model as of yet, as rule of thumb you usually want to avoid owning any brands first year model updates because they come with unforseen issues.

I've owned Volvo 850 cars since '94 and my most recent daily driver finally blew a few exhaust valves at 405,xxx miles although it still runs fine but a bit rough at idle. It was a work horse. CR has become increasingly biased in recent years. I cancelled my subscription once I noticed this trend. I am by no means a GM fan, but to say their full size SUVs are the least reliable is just plain irresponsible. When a vehicle can go 200K miles with relatively minor repairs, it is far from unreliable. The Lincoln Aviator had 1 recall but is higher on this list than the GLE with almost 40? Tells you all you need to know about this list....

I've personally had a Yukon and Tahoe that both went over 200K without any major repairs. Regular maintenance and a couple fuel pumps, and that's about it. I've had poor quality vehicles as well (one is one this list), but I stand behind my statement that CR is no longer an unbiased resource. They solicit reviews from subscribers, of which they may get a few hundred or maybe a thousand for a particular model, while the manufacturer sells thousands or even hundreds of thousands of these vehicles. Also, there is no way a list of unreliable vehicles is accurate without a Range Rover.

The newer a vehicle, the less reliable it will be. This is why there is an odd year where a company does not plan for reliability but manages to eke out a top spot. Consumer Reports also has faulty metrics for gauging a cars reliability. It's based on consumer surveys and early reliability issues. Early problems are not indicative of long-term care. The vast majority of issues reported tend to be user adoption rather than something breaking. For instance, how to use a new infotainment system. The consumers of these vehicles have varying metrics and standards they expect in a vehicle. Someone buying a Mercedes is expecting something a bit more than a person buying a Toyota. It's basically asking the opinions of a car enthusiast verse a person who treats a vehicle as an appliance. Reliable vehicles depend on their simplicity, power train and material choices, and consistency of construction. These can all be analyzed to draw conclusions on reliability beyond 5 years. There are rarely actual reliability issues under 5 years.

@zsamps
@zsamps 2 года назад
This list is mostly accurate besides the Genesis GV80. The GV80 is a very safe SUV and if you wanted to talk about reliability, take a look at other comments. Some people have had them for over one year and still are not having issues with them. You also said that people have issues with the transmission. This car's transmission is solid because it's the same one they were using in the original Hyundai Genesis. I know someone who owns one of those, and the transmission is solid. Also, this vehicle is not overpriced. The base tier of this car has 300 horsepower and stunning luxury features some of which aren't even standard, let alone available, on most of its competition. Not a whole lot can compete with that. The top tier competes with luxury SUVs that cost upwards of $85,000. This car actually is a decent deal. Also, when a manufacturer puts a 100,000 mile warranty on a car, you're going to be just fine while owning it. Hyundai has a garbage past, but they've changed a whole lot.

My wife has had a 2022 Lincoln Aviator for a year now & has had no issues. 85% of our vehicles we've owned have been Lincoln's but since they stopped making sedans, I switched to a Genesis G80 Prestige & absolutely love it! IMO, Lincoln has gone downhill since they switched to an all SUV lineup. Yes, the wife's Aviator has had no issues (YET) but it's built extremely cheap using a lot of plastic parts. My G80's interior is far more luxurious, more comfortable, 1000x quieter in the cabin & has a lot more safety features including smart cruise control for almost the same price point (our 2 vehicles). A Lincoln Aviator Black Label is about $85k whereas a Genesis GV80 Prestige is around $76k which both have all the same fully loaded features so not really understanding them saying the GV80 is expensive. This video seems to have all the luxury SUV's so which SUV's should be paying attention to that are "reliable?" LoL

@Richard Forbes LoL! Your comment made me chuckle. Hate to break it to ya, but all of American automobile companies (excluding Tesla claims of being 100% American made) have been installing numerous foreign parts in their vehicles for decades, so technically, you have never owned a 100% American made automobile unless you have owned or own a Tesla. I assumed every American adult would have known this information nowadays, but I shouldn't assume things as everyone learns at their own pace. Something else you should be informed about - China is a major stakeholder with Ford & GM; they own 50% of Ford and 49% of GM. You're talking to someone who customized his cars to the extreme inside & out for the 1st 10 years of having his license. I had a Grand Am GT with a full custom air ride suspension, and although that car felt like I was riding on a cloud (just as you stated), my G80, believe it or not, rides 10x smoother than the Grand Am did. That should already be a given seeing that technology advances with time, therefore it would only make sense that a 2021 luxury vehicle would have a smoother ride than a fully customized 2000 Grand Am GT air ride suspension. That's 21 years of innovation in the works. Lastly, there are a few things to say here.. 1) I'm still trying to understand why you threw your two cents in stating that imports are junk and they are worse than ours?.. You JUST said "I'm not really a Ford guy but I would buy anything before I bought an import." That tells me you have never owned a foreign luxury vehicle so we're supposed to take advice from someone who claims to have knowledge about something they obviously know nothing about simply put - you have never experienced it 1st hand 2) since my original comment a couple months ago, the Aviator had to go in the shop bc one of the cheap plastic pieces on the interior broke and had to be replaced. Betcha can't guess where that part was made and shipped from?🤣 3) you stated all I'm doing is sending my money overseas.. actually, what's really happening is the bank that approved my auto loan is taking my money until the loan is paid off. The dealerships are the ones doing direct business with auto manufacturers in other countries so technically, they are the ones "sending their money overseas." Sorry about this. I just thought it was appropriate to explain the facts of what's actually going on. If you want to continue with your current way of thinking, please, by all means, go for it. Whatever helps you sleep at night.

Always bought on CR recommendations, but the loved the G70. It has a so-so review for the 4 cylinder,but they didn't review the v6. , which was priced $10k less than a Audi S3, and blew it away. Found it very odd they don't review the 6, as it is a big seller.

There is a gv80 in my garage it's been there for almost a year and I couldn't be happier. BMW, Audi type of amenities for much less. I also own a jx35, (infiniti qx60) same shit I heard about that one. 150k miles, NO transmission issues and the thing is my daily driver for dogs and carrying cargo. I will say this... my dogs HATE the gv80. Even in eco mode it still has so much acceleration that they roll around like soup cans in the back. So, my dogs would agree with this vid but not for the stated reasons.

I don't buy the GMC aspect. Wife had a Diesel colorado that went up to 120K miles before she traded it in a new Sierra (also a diesel). Sis in law has a Chevy Tahoe and so far seems good. Literally the whole family is a GMC family and it works fine

I can say I’ve purchased 2 (Buick Enclave and Pontiac Torrent). Both had so many issues. AC failure at 14,000 miles, body was easily dented and so many electrical issues. Visit the GM forums to see how many have premature failures. I didn’t expect much from a Pontiac, but was extremely disappointed with Buick. I would never purchase another GM, my money would be better spent calling an Uber. My experience with owning GM vehicles

I got a 2021 SX Prestige X-Line when it first hit dealerships in Dec 2020 and my only gripes are with the transmission at low speeds and a super annoying rattle around 1500 rpm that seems to be coming from the engine. My local service center acknowledged that they could hear the rattle but refused to do anything about it. I also hate that there is no HUD or ambient lighting.

Test drove a vw tiguan and it sounded and drove like a jeep car . Interior was very plastic . End up buying a Lincoln Corsair nicely equipped , Panoramic roof , air cooled leather seating upgraded wheels , etc for around the same price as the VW . So far 25000 trouble free miles . The car has the most quiet cabin I've ever road in . The styling inside and out is beautiful and the 4 cylinder turbo is pretty quick and fun to drive . Paid around 43000 back in 2020 which is about what they wanted for a similarly equipped Tiguen

I learned to drive on Fraser Island (largest all-sand-island in the world) in a 1997 Manual Range Rover. If you can drive that highcentreofgravity rolly-poly around the rough roads of a tide-restricted sand island, you can drive anything anywhere! It wasn’t great hauling a horse float, as the drive train’s system had lots of trantrums; but I loved it. If I could own any car no matter the price, I’d follow the queen… Defender all the way.

The main problem with the new Volvos is the downsizing of the engines. I got 2 old XC 60 and had over 500 000 kilometers with each and no problems. When I leased a new XC 60 I kept the last old one and I was an good choice. The 2 litre engine with 313 hp is not very durable and resulted in lots of problems. So I handed it back and use now my old but reliable 2.4 litre D5 again until I got my new all electric. he engines

This type of list is very useful to warn owners agaist potential mistakes to avoid when thinking about a vehicle purchase. However, I don't think CR is being totally clear with us. I have seen CR reports give low reviews on vehicles which had compelling evidence from other sources indicating the opposite. Also, they put the Kia Sorento on this list at #2 commenting on the dual clutch transmission being bumpy in stop and go traffic. This characteristic is normal with DCT transmission and you can adjust your driving to avoid this. They also failed to tell us if this comment also applied to the Hyundai Sante Fe with the DCT transmission as this is the sister car to the Sorento. Hyundai owns Kia. I would advise buyers to give a broader check of their reviews and not totally rely on this CR report.
