At Super Bowl XXIV between the San Francisco 49ers and Denver Broncos, Nissan aired an advertisement for their brand-new car, the Nissan 300ZX Z32. The ad was directed by Ridley Scott of Blade Runner and Apple 1984 fame. However, the advertisement was so controversial and so heavily criticized that it only aired once, and was pulled immediately after the Super Bowl ended, never to be shown over the airwaves again. This is the story behind the ad and the controversy.

Should mention that Nisan's 80s downturn literally coincided with dumping the Datsun brand in the US.
@weegeemike
@weegeemike 2 года назад
There was some confusion for sure... Datsun was Nissan's identity in the US, all their cars were marketed under that name. It had good brand recognition and a loyal customer base. When they switched to Nissan (their real company name) people thought they had been bought out or that the cars were from a different manufacturer or something, etc. I really liked Datsun and they recently brought the name back in some Asian markets. Since they are trying to go more electric, i feel like it would a cool to rebrand their cheaper, gas powered models as Datsun. Just an idea.

More context to consider -- the national speed limit had been FIFTY FIVE miles an hour from 1974 to 1987. In 1987 only certain rural interstates could temporarily raise the limit to 65 mph. A national speed limit of 55 (or even 65) likely seems implausible to anyone who started driving in the last 25 years, but these speed limits were serious and a hotly debated topic for two decades. The temporary change to 65 had only been in place for a few years at the time of the airing and the ad just fed in to the "irresponsible death and carnage" arguments put forth by the pro-55 crowd (insurance companies, etc.) who wanted the temporary increase rescinded. It wasn't until 1995 (five years after this ad) that congress finally did away with the 1974 speed limit law. So, yeah, at the time, we were debating as a nation whether to keep 65 or go back to 55. If this ad were to run today, I don't know that it would get the same pushback given that speed limits are a relative non-issue currently.
@matthewdaley746

@jimmym3352

Funny when you look at it now since people go insane speeds where I live. I get passed on the freeway when I'm going 7 over the speed limit. I usually go around 72mph. I frequently see people going 90 or 100 mph, sometimes higher. And yeah, maybe I'm old, but that's unsafe. After having a blowout on the freeway, you won't believe how incredibly hard it is to get across 4 lanes of traffic to the emergency lane. No one would let me in, traffic was going insane speeds and I couldn't get over when I couldn't go fast myself.
@BrownsFaninIowa
@BrownsFaninIowa 2 года назад
Just before the 65 limit kicked in back in '87, I got a speeding ticket for 62 in a 55 on a wide-open stretch of interstate in the rural midwest where now -- on the exact same road -- the posted speed is 70 and the average speed is wayyy higher. I drove through there most recently at 79mph (9 over is my target) and I was the slowest car on the road. So 62 was wayyyy too fast (and earned me points and a fine), but now 80+ is 'meh'. Not that I'm bitter... Truly I'm just ecstatic that I can now drive nearly 80mph most anywhere in the country and not get a second glance from the highway patrol. Truly grateful. It wasn't long ago that you'd spend a night in jail for that.

I think the people chasing the car were portrayed as faceless cartoonish villains. I also see it was on a track. So it was clear to me that what the car was doing shouldn’t be tried on city streets by average drivers. This unofficial Official Jaguar Gator 9 historian will remind everyone you made videos on the following: 1. How another commercial from that same Super Bowl played a part in Tostitos replacing a commercial they planned to air in Super Bowl 31. 2. The concern over these ads is sublimely silly. The fact that a disclaimer is even needed is indicative how completely subzero the collective IQ is in today's litigious society. That said, it's odd there was no disclaimer. I think I would've done the ad differently, as this was the debut of the new 2nd Gen 300Z, but to spend that kind of money and then pull the ad over such a bunch of nervous Ned nonsense is unfathomable.

History is littered with ads that were only aired once during the Super Bowl. The most likely reasons it never aired again are probably because anyone who would want a new 300Z won't be swayed by a commercial (why you rarely see tv ads for sports cars), royalties that would need to be paid to Ridley Scott each time the ad aired, and minimal desire to cut it down to a more ad slot-friendly 15 seconds. Besides, if they were afraid of liability, they would have just added the necessary fine print to the ad and released that.

Nissan ran this as once during the Super Bowl in 1990 and that pulled the plug after one showing. This was an epic commercial than the classic Apple teaser ad for the Macintosh. The car was riding too fast, and that didn’t work. There were lots of cars on the highway, especially in NYC where they have cars driving at 50 MPH as well as slow traffic in the middle of a rush hour. During that time, if you watched “The Price Is Right”, you might see a prize where a contestant can win a Nissan 300ZX sports car on pricing games like “Golden Road” and “Three Strikes” as well as the “Showcase” round where you can win a Nissan 300ZX with the other prizes in the “Showcase”. Other game shows during that time offered the Nissan 300ZX.

How many times IRL will I ever have to drive any vehicle fast enough to outrun a race car or a plane? How many times will the road be devoid of other vehicles to allow me to go that fast anyway? I personally didn't see a problem with the ad either. I understand the uproar, but it seems like the main difference in the uproar would be a disclaimer. I remember an ad years ago that aired once from Bud Light. A dude in an upside down clown suit drank a Bud Light (it looked like it he was drinking from his ass). Then he asked for a hot dog. That was funny, but I think it aired one time.

It’s the ‘90s. Our own research shows gas prices are gonna surge in a few years. Should we invest in future fuel efficiency and electric cars? NAWWW - Let’s invest $1.4 million in an ad that promotes wasting fuel!

@BrandonGiesing

What I find dumb here is like, okay yeah I could see how the ad as is might encourage speeding, but if a disclaimer would likely be enough, why scrap it entirely after the one airing? Just edit in the disclaimer at the bottom for future reairings, instead of being like "well we clearly need to trash it now cause there's no disclaimer on it". Would've been literally the easiest fix in the world and allowed them to keep the campaign going for more cash and they just throw it away like that.

Right, now, Nissan needs, whatever, good, publicity is available, to distract from the fact that they're run by a criminal, who admitted, as much, by fleeing, ahead of his trial, blood simple.

Not as bad as the time Budweiser tried to be so cool by implying a guy was setting up a menage a trois with his girlfriend and her best friend. Trouble is the actress they hired to play the best friend looked like a guy., which completely confused the audience. "Wait, he's getting a brewski for his girlfriend's brother (or gay roommate). I guess that's.... kinda nice"
