While many ads at the Super Bowl try to intentionally be sad and heartbreaking tearjerkers, the saddest one of all-time was one that was not trying to do that, and where most people who didn't know any better laughed and had a good time. At Super Bowl XXVII between the Buffalo Bills and Dallas Cowboys, Pepsi aired a well-received advertisement starring a 93-year-old man. Unfortunately, the man would never get to see it run. This is the story behind what might be the saddest and most heartbreaking commercial in the history of the Super Bowl

I may be in the minority here, but I believe if Pepsi were to NOT air the ad, it would have then been the saddest ad of all time. Seeing this ad makes me happy, knowing how much it meant to him, and making his family proud.

It's definitely unfortunate that he didn't live to see it on television but I don't think of it as sad; it's inspiring in a way that a guy who was born in 1899 can now be seen by people around the world online. 100 million people saw the commercial air at the time and now it can be seen online by 5 billion people.

Also the Budweiser Clydesdales bowing their heads at Ground Zero at the first Super Bowl after 9/11. I could be alone on this and far be it for me to trivialize that event, but I was in school watching this with my parents and all of our eyes practically rolled out of our heads at that one.

My wife is an actress, so I see her on commercials and TV shows from time to time. And I know how much she enjoys her craft. When I see that spot, I'm not sad at all - I feel very happy that Mr. Finberg was able to be a part of that life and make people happy on TV. It's great that he got that chance, and it's great that we got to see it.

Good video... Although I really don't think a 93 year old man dying is tragic. It's sad that he didn't live to see the ad air, but at 90+ year old, it's not exactly a tragedy, it's more like inevitably... If her been 39 instead of 93, then it would be tragic. Great work though 👍

The only part where I disagree is, "for reasons that were completely beyond Pepsi's control"... Hiring a 93 year old man was a roll of the dice. I mean, Pepsi could have hired a younger but older-looking actor. For example, Christopher Lloyd has looked about 90 for the last 35 years!

Once you know the backstory, the un-aired commercial which would have showed Chris Eliot bunjee jumping into the Super Bowl is a lot sadder since a stunt person died directly as a result of the ad. I'm sorry this guy did not live to see himself on a Super Bowl commercial, but you have to know that's in the card when you hire a 93-year old actor to star in your commercial.
