NISSAN XTERRA 2000 3.3LV6 DIAGNOSIS and TROUBLESHOOTING CRANK NO START - Ignition Circuit. Basic principles can be applied to Nissan Frontier and Nissan Pathfinder.
COVERED IGNITION CIRCUIT COMPONENTS:
1) check engine start and fuses;
2) check ignition coil power supply circuit;
3) check power transistor ground for open and short;

Absolute great video. I learned a great deal about the Signals in and out of the main distributor 6 pin connector. You did an outstanding job explaining and showing the path of the Power voltage to the Cap and the distributor. Also the resistor that allows the CPU to confirm that primary ignition has been fired. One end of that resistor connector goes back to CPU to Pin #2 for "IGNCK", that's ignition confirmation signal to CPU, if you dont get that signal to CPU there will be a CODE set. Actually, you can do ALL signal confirmation in and out of the Distributor and Cap. Pin #4 on the Distributor connector is the "1 degree signal" from the Cam shaft Sensor to the CPU, you need a scope to view and confirm. Pin #3 at the distributor connector is the Cam Shaft '120 Degree signal' back to the CPU for ignition firing time. Both these signal are digital square wave signals needed at the CPU or your engine will misfire and stall. Also the #1 Pin on the distributor connector is the CPU signal to 'turn on' the power transistor inside the distributor and therefore fire the spark plugs. Once again all these signals can be confirmed at the Distributor area and you don't have to go back of the CPU to check. However, if you have a broken wire out of the distributor to the CPU , then you would have to confirm signals at the CPU connector. Once again thank you for your video , outstanding best video I have seen on this Nissan ignition system !!

I just wanted to say THANK YOU ! one more time for a very informative video, I used a multimeter just as you showed and it ended up being the distributor that needed replacing. My 02 Xterra is back on the road. I learned alot about troubleshooting and now have the confidence to learn more!

3:10 you're doing it wrong, the spark is supposed to jump from distributor cap to the test light not from spark plug wire to the test light, thank you for the tutorial!

Thank you so much! I am very impressed by your diagnosis and attention to detail. My Distributor (Power Transistor) went out yesterday which left me stranded. I thought it was my Battery or Alternator since it was cranking intermittently (wuh wuh stop wuh wuh wuh stop). I didn't even thinking to look at the tachometer. That should have been mentioned in the manual! A few years ago I had to replace not one but TWO distributors (one in a Frontier, the other in an Xterra) after an inexperienced mistake of not disconnecting the distributor and coil harness connectors when the spark plugs were out followed by cranking the engine with the starter (I was trying to loosen the harmonic balanced bolt). Well that fryed the transistor and I believe the computer as well. I learned my lesson after a few hundred dollars 😩. I think the replacement I got was just poor quality. Anyway, I just bought one off Amazon for $75 (better than $250 locally!). I will let you know how it goes!!

So if you have the spark plugs out, and the distributor connectors connected, you fry the ECU and resistors ??? I'm having a crank no start issue on my 04 frontier. What resistors? The one secured to the wire harness loom?

@@PistonShack oddly enough our issue is intermittent. Runs fine then dies typically starts right back up then dies again a min or two later. After 6 times or so it goes to a no start situation and just turns over. Today I planned to troubleshoot following your video but it stayed running for over an hour. Lol

man this was great, customer suv just like this is doing the same thing after another mechanic did a spark plug and not it wont start, not fuel related, this def help i think it lost spark, but after seeing that the cam could play apart in this i will change the cam sensor/rotor cap, SMH thxs 😱

I'm about to buy one with a No Start condition, it turns over, but no Start, so, I subscribed. Great Vid. You got another Sub. I heard sometimes they have a No Start at certain Ambient Temperature problem... when that happens I hear its a ECU problem, so, I guess I'll see.

Thanks, Rob! Sounds like a deal to buy cheap Xterra!! If ECU is alive while (engine light comes on) cranking but no tachometer signal most likely you need new distributor.

My pleasure John! Distributors prong to fail over time. Coil and optic cam sensor built in. Most likely cam sensor failed inside the distributor if you don't have tachometer reading while cranking engine over.

Usually, DTCs won't lit Engine Light. ECU on Xterra doesn't monitor that part of the circuit.

Im a girl and even i know the spark plug wire wont cause an ignition spark. stick you probe in the distributor cap otherwise y ok u wont get spark ever. lol i cant believe so many people mised that. The way your testing it you better off putting it by your cameras battery pack for correct spark identification

Did you test for spark on the wire to the spark plug instead of from the distributor? Wouldn't the spark come from the distributor?

I used the light to check for spark and it lit up but it won't light up a spark plug so it's definitely not getting enough juice. I'm not getting power to the coil from the plug next to the distributor which supplies coil volqtge.

i replaced my starter on 2003 xterra but when i hooked battery termanals the engine started turning over.... even replaced the switch ...got any ideas im stumped thank you

Would a bad distributor cause you not to have power to fuel pump relays?

prob not, almost always a bad ECM on these Nissans, my Xterra same thing, crank no start when cold. Flagship1 has pre-programmed ECMs for around $400, great buys. you have spare relays in your fuse box, use one or get a new one, they're cheap, have someone crank to ON, listen for relay to switch, you can hear it, you'll know if relays are working. you can also hear fuel pump engage to diagnose a bad fuel pump, you dont want to change a fuel pump, omg, terrible job.

Nice video...however, You'll never ever get spark testing in that way. theres no way to complete a circuit. Test from the plug boot or out of the Dist.cap directly.

@@PistonShack ...Glad you got it running. My buddy is have the issue with his exterra after replacing the Nox sensor and his injectors. Cranks, but won't fire. He also installed a new distributor. What are the chances that the new Dist. is bunk,? Is there a way to test the distributor? Tnx

@@cbr632003 Well, you can do those test I did in my video to test voltage and resistance etc. Most likely on Xterra if you don't have spark - it related to faulty coil / distributor. Check if timing marks are correct to 1 cylinder TDC prior removing/installing distributor. Bzw, do you have tachometer signal while cranking and SERVICE ENGINE SOON light on?

@@PistonShackHi PistonShack. Not sure about the tach signal or engine light..its my buddies car & the car is located in another state. Im trying to help him remotely. From what i know its getting spark and fuel. Thanks for the tip on checking the timing marks. He'll check on that this coming week to see if the belt didnt jump and throw the timing off. Also going to inspect the tensioner. Have a hunch that might be the culprit. Thank you for your responses in helping trouble shoot! I'll update once the timing check happens.Cheers.

Did you get code P0340, camshaft position sensor? My frontier 3.3l cranks but won't start, but I'd like to know if it's all the same symptoms.

No I didn't have p0340 code. I had p0335 crank shaft signal missing code, but on Xterra crank signal is not used for ignition and tachometer. I still have p0335.

You kinda "Can" rebuild them, but it's not worth it... It's need a couple Specialty Tools for it and it's hard to source the Rebuildable Replacement parts inside... (Distributor) ... I've rebuilt some Dodge and Chevy Distributors, I used to take Everything apart even Breaking things just to figure out how they work... Often, because where there is a Will there is a Way, I would find a Sollution one way or another.

Technically, you can rebuild the distributor. I done it before on older vehicles from 90th and 80th but nowadays it's easier to buy new or used one to save the time.

not getting any volts from battery (5:05) it has a new battery. I installed it wrong and shorted the main fuse (120amp) but I also noticed a little smoke coming from under upper manifold, car cranks but wont start, tach not moving. I dont have any codes to read. Did I damage the ECM ? I am scared 😔

@@PistonShack So I double checked, rotor spins, I have power in distributor, but scanner says I am not getting volts to ECM. Maybe the ECM relay is bad? I am checking now if its good.

If everything is good with the ECM then I am going for the distributor, there is nothing under the manifold from what I can see that is fed directly from battery besides injectors, the only thing that I am thinking is the crankshaft sensor that is under there around the exhaust

Hey Cesar! In what minute did I say that? I had cam signal missing / no tachometer. The same issue happened to me couple times in a last five years. Those Non serviceable Ignition Distributors are know to go bad. I would say 90% is a faulty distributor.

@@cesarorozco2462 Yeah, you can get used HITACHI for 30$ with a 10$ 12-month warranty. That's what I did. So far it works like new!

@@PistonShack I actually got 12.75k ohms on pin 7 and 8. It should be less than 0.8 ohms, in other words a short. For some reason I am getting the same value as pin 7 to 9. Is that possible? Getting the same value on primary and secondary of the coil.

I Set No. 1 piston at TDC on its compression stroke by rotating crankshaft aligning timing indicator with last notch (0 degree TDC) on crank pulley.

I have a 2002 Nissan Xterra. 3.3l auto.... The check engine light started blinking and it got to where it would miss and stutter when accelerating... I changed the fuel filter,, No Luck.... I bought a handheld code reader and it said (Knock Sensor Bank 1) So i took it to a garage and they said that it was one of my injectors.... So they put all 6 new injectors in the engine, All new spark plugs and new plug wires... It now runs good while you're driving it, But it cranks forever before it will start and once it does start it idles really rough and misses very bad.. But if you accelerate the engine or drive it, The miss and hesitation leaves..... I'm clueless as to what would make it idle like crap but run fine while driving... Any Ideas?

Do you have any fuel leaks or smell fuel? 4. Have you checked inline fuel pressure, does it stay after you turned key off? Sound like fuel rail doesn't hold the pressure after you shut off the engine. Check fuel pressure regulator and fuel pressure first: 1. Stop engine and disconnect fuel pressure regulator vacuum hose from intake manifold. 2. Plug intake manifold with a blind cap. 3. Connect variable vacuum hand pump to fuel pressure regulator (you can get one of them online). 4. Start engine and read indication of fuel pressure gauge as vacuum is changed. Fuel pressure should decrease as vacuum increases. If results are unsatisfactory, replace fuel pressure regulator. Fuel pressure should be: At idling: With vacuum hose connected Approximately 34 psi With vacuum hose disconnected Approximately 43 psi Let me know more info. Talk to you later. Cheers.

Thanks for an advice Ali. If spark present, it always finds a short way to the ground. Good spark should bridge at least 1" gap. Cheers!

Hi David, Does it dies right away or engine slowly shuts off? Does it happen when you just started driving or after long drive? Do you have any DTC (engine light) on your dash? What lattes maintenance / rapier was done? It will help me to find right direction. Thanks

I know spark plug doesn't make the spark. It looked really stupid, placed my test light close to the wire not to the distributor cap. I notice it later on. I deleted that part. Thanks for pointing it out.
