Nitrogen Fertilizer: When, How and Why?

Yes, this video is about Nitrogen, nitrogen fertilizer to be precise. This video covers off production of nitrogen through biological processes and manufacturing. The history of how we got to where we are is rich and it's a story that should be told.
Fertilizer for your lawn and garden available at your local store hasn't always been easy to get nor was it plentiful. Fertilizer as we know it was created to solve a global problem, future generational starvation. The first production nitrogen didn't enter our world until 1908 and wasn't in massive supply until the 1930's.
This video covers some historical points of when and and where the process took place and how we got to have so much of it available. I also talk about what the world would be like without commercially produced fertilizer.
I hope you take the time to watch and or listen to this video and that it makes you think a bit more about your fertilization program and what you can be doing differently to your lawn. This video is for all you pro lawn care folks, all you DIY lawn lovers and those interested in history and science.
You will soon connect the dots on why I fertilize lawns the way I do and the theory behind that process. Needless to say, many of us owe our lives to the advancement of science and nitrogen fertilizer production is one of those many advancements that have made life as we know it possible. Now when you ask "how much fertilizer should I apply to my lawn," you can understand a little bit more about where it came from.

I loved this presentation. I have been addicted to soil, nutrients, and of course turf for a VERY long time. I might even link a few stubborn people to it, those who dont understand when i tell them just because your turf grew (literally) 14" in a week doesnt mean it is healthy nor "fantastic soil", when in fact i know it is just a {insert corporate application company name here} spiking of N during a monsoon season.
@Lawncology

There is a “when in doubt fert it out” method that has been preached for a long time. This is really just a concept to kick the can down the road more than anything. It’s often cheaper and easier to up sell an over seeding and pump nitrogen than to find the issue and fix it.

First rate discussion John, great production quality and interesting thought provoking content. Made me reconsider grass clipping recycling for the 100th time, lol. Living in Utah's high desert I tend to feel similarly to Jared, things don't decompose rapidly enough. I spread some clippings as a test on the edge of my flower bed in July and they haven't changed much. Do you start bagging as we head into fall when biological activity slows to a crawl? Also when you are reseeding or repairing a lawn in your opinion what is the right level or N to put down and how frequently?

Would using a surfactant with Air8 help it get deeper into the soil? I am going to use Air 8 this year since 2/3 of my lawn is a pain in the ass to mech aerate because of the slope. This should help to wash the salt levels down along the curb strip as well, I am thinking.

@Lawncology
@Lawncology 3 года назад
timing is the most important piece when feeding. summer takes its toll on cool season turf and making sure it goes into the heat with food and then fed lightly during the heat with the addition of micros will keep color consistent. for the most part sumer feedings are less than .25lbs N 4-8 weeks apart depending on precipitation

I'm still very curious about the amounts/ratios of NPK+micros that are actually in my grass clippings when I mulch them back in to be recycled by the soil ...as I'm sure it should reduce the requirements to add additional fert if I'm not 'harvesting that crop' by bagging and just throwing it all away - also I find it keeps my soil very active and 'alive' where I never get any dead clutter matter nor 'thatch' build up, I even mow all my tree leaves in(which is much easier than raking and having that also hauled off, further depleting the soil) and the lawn simply 'eats' all that too as it all disappears quickly ... but I never see anything on that type off 'feeding' and what rate levels I'm keeping in the soil vs the kind of guesswork that happens when we only add supplemental fert that may or may not contain everything we remove by constantly bagging everything out; like am I processing the grass to produce an unwanted build up? or am I keeping hard to replace minerals and micros?

I’ve really decreased my nitro apps due to the fact that I am not consuming grass. 🤣 Why do I need 1 lb. of nitro per 1000 for? I’m going to just mow and mow. I’ve dialed down to about .50-.75 lbs. of nitro max every 8 weeks. The lawn still looks great. My lawn is 5400 sq. ft and just one bag of Scott’s Turfbuilder for Southern lawns does the job.

Good stuff. I want a good looking lawn but I also have kids and a dog that will run all over it (dog will also do his business that kills spots pretty badly)...and maybe I also take a few divots practicing my swing. Some people love to mow but I'm not one of them. I'm probably in that minority group of wanting to mow less, have a short cut lawn, but a lawn that repairs itself from aforementioned reasons.

Lawns are absolutely useless and we should be more concerned about our ability to grow supplemental food in our yards. How much of our bee population will we drive away or destroy with our insane quest for lawns and how much longer will we eat tasteless food grown from only three fertilizers in a tray without micro nutrients. This should be one of the most important conversations. Talk about crop covers and nitrogen fixers and the benefits of watering a garden instead of a lawn.
