On this day in 1971 {March 28th} the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band performed "Mr. Bojangles" on the CBS-TV program 'The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour'... Four months earlier on November 21st, 1970 it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #9 and spent 19 weeks on the Top 100... It reached #2 on the Canadian RPM Tracks chart... Was composed and 1st recorded in 1968 by Jerry Jeff Walker, his version peaked at #77 on the Top 100 and #51 in Canada... May God bless Mr. Campbell...
I'm a die hard Dirt Band fan. However I am also a forever Jerry Jeff Walker fan. So many years ago a friend who was a radio program manager was given tickets to Jerry Jeff at the Commodore Ball Room in Vancouver BC. We sat about 20 feet in front of Jerry Jeff. I had some great conversation with him over these songs he wrote as I sang and played them in bars for years. Hard to beat Jerry Jeff with just an Ovation acoustic singing his songs. Although one time years ago on a tv show I watched Tom T Hall do a class job of this song.
This is a great video one of the best. You all look great and the song of course one of the best and you all just do it right. Thanks for the music and the memories.
I've LOVED this song since the first was released, a long long time ago now. If anyone has the video of them playing this song in a gazebo, PLEASE post it. I love how, on the original release, it has the old man telling a story before it goes into the song.
Oh I´d love to hear that one the old man telling a story before the song. I´d have to call this my childhood most favorite song, but there was so much good music then, but just adore ¨Mr. Bojangles.¨ Saw this yesterday, enjoy ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aGJ5ikbe0GQ.html
On this day in 1971 {May 29th} the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band performed "Mr. Bojangles" and "House at Pooh Corner" on the late Dick Clark's American Bandstand... Six months earlier on November 21st, 1970 "Mr. Bojangles" entered Billboard's Hot top 100; eventually it peaked at #9 and spent 19 weeks in the Top 100... And one month earlier on April 24th "House at Pooh Corner" entered the Top 100 and it reached #53 and stayed 13 weeks in the Top 100... R.I.P. Mr. Clark...
First saw Jerry Jeff Walker do this in 1968, at the Main Point in Bryn Mawr. Dave Bromberg was on the Banjo with him. NGDB is great but Jerry Jeff did it the best.
I saw another version where they had the uekelele, but no accordian. I think the accordian player is the one who did the uekelele part, so they can't have both live at once unless they get a substitute musician.
I look pass the drunk and i see a beauityful old man who loved his dog and he like too dance and laugh and tried too enjoy life after all life is love joy and peace and happynesst.😂😢😮😅😂
Jerry Jeff Walker wrote this song, and it is not about Bojangles Robinson, but about someone he met while in a New Orleans jail. True story. Do the research.
I love that. It makes me think of hearing it in my uncle’s truck after he picked up me and my cousins from the swimming pool and I told my Dad later “we heard Mr Bojangles on the radio!” ‘86 or so.
@123456789mischief did you catch the shoe repair at 2:08... third and victoria street... kipp mallery drugstore in the background. both have been around forever... including the band.....
If you like this song you should also enjoy hearing it by Nina Simone and Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Amazing how the same song lends itself to so many great interpretations. Enjoy.
I like this version. I love the accordion. Does anyone know where this came from? It looks like it was ripped from a VHS tape. It's not from "Twenty Years Of Dirt."
I'm not sure about the video, but the audio is from their 1991 live album Live Two Five, recorded in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada. The video seems to match. Wish I'd been able to see the concert.
Seen them a bunch of times. Too bad this video doesn't show Ibby "jumping so high." You can tell he did it by the reaction. Miss Ibby, but John McEuen wasn't there when this one was made. Now he does mandolin on it in concert.
