I think I’m at an age where change is difficult. I started out with the 1971 nasb, then delved into the NIV, went to nkjv for most of my adult Christian life. When I was introduced to the hcsb, I thought I found the NIV as it should have been written. Along comes the csb and that’s where this old guy says , stop, there are too many versions, and nothing will promote biblical literacy as long as one has to “ keep up with the language “. Staying with one translation is really why the kjv has held its own with an older generation. The esv is a good replacement for both the kjv, nkjv and nasb. But without italicization, it poses a problem that the nkjv settles.
Yeah, and it's frustrating that not only do new translations keep getting introduced but we also keep getting new updates of existing translations (most recently with the NASB 2020). You mentioned the NKJV. One thing that is nice about the NKJV is that it's stable. I believe they did one update in 1984, two years after its initial release, and then they left it alone.
@@sorenpx the New Living Translstion had a major revision in 2004. It had three minor updates not noticeable and not marketed as a update or revision. No updates since 2015.
@@rodneyjackson6181 2015 wasn't that long ago so it wouldn't surprise me at all if another major update comes in the next 10 to 15 years. In any case, the NLT is much too dynamic and paraphrastic to be used as anything other than a devotional or comparison Bible. One's primary study Bible should always be a formal-equivalence translation, in my opinion.
@@sorenpx you have a right to your preference and viewpoint. However, I preached and studied from the NLT for over 15 years. A lot of people make a lot of comments and opinions who have never preached, read or studied from it. I like the NKJV, CSB and even the KJV and NASB. Most people sitting in our pews are not Bible scholars nor theologians. They want something that is readable, understandable and accurate. In my view the NLT fits that dynamic. Apparently Chuck Swindoll thinks so too.

I agree with your opinions on the NIV. It's not my preferred translation any longer because it does make interpretive choices where the text is ambiguous, but I SO value its readability for people who are not comfortable with the sometimes awkward wording of other English translations. And I think it's more accurate and less interpretive than the NLT, which is just a bit TOO casual in its wording for me. This is the word of God, not Dilbert. So while I don't read the NIV myself, I do recommend it to people, especially new believers. And there is no doubt that it has been successful on a massive scale. As always, enjoyed the video!

I been in the NIV bible for going on 16 years now & I love & I do read & study from other bible Translations like the KJV, NLT too, I am very new to the CSB bible & I just bought one & reads like the NIV & NLT together like NIV+NLT=CSB like that had a baby together, but I am in love with the NLT life Application study Bible, but I preach from the NIV cause that’s the Bible that I know for over 15 years, I know scripture from the NIV by heart, but I am going to check out the CSB bible.
I used (old) NIV for a long time until they came out with NIV2011. I didn't like the way some of the changes they made. I switched to ESV for a while but now I bought CSB primarily for studying purposes. I really like it for it's "more" literary translation.

The NIV is my favourite translation. I love the mix of formal and dynamic equivalence it has. Also the NIV has an Anglicised edition, which helps as I'm in the UK.
Personally. I like the Net 2 version, but for some reason, many conservative Reformed seem to hate the NIV with a passion. For the most part it's pretty good, but it does have some weird verses in some places. For example, the NIV has Ps 86:11 as "Teach me your way, Lord, that I may rely on your faithfulness". Pretty much every other translation has a variation of "Teach me your way, Lord, and I will live by your truth" (CSB).
You basically said the NIV is popular. But there's an argument to be made that a good dynamic translation is more accurate than a formal word-for-word translation like the KJV or the NASB. Words don't match up between languages, cultures, and time like a code. AA Koine Greek word doesn't always mean the same English word. Translating it as if it's a code (as the KJV and NASB do) is actually a poor translation. Words have a semantic range - a bundle of meanings. Consider the English word "run". How would you translate that word into a different language 2,000 years from now? Try it: I run the business. My nose is running. Trump lost his run for reelection. That mission was a milk run. I got a run in my stocking. Would you translate that as "moving rapidly on foot" every time you saw that "run" in the original? of course not. but that's how the KJV and NASB handle Greek words! A better translation would figure out what the word means from the context and translate it so that the reader in the target language knew what the original writer intended his original readers. The NIV does a fantastic job of translating the Greek word properly in context. That's why the NIV is a great translation.
Those are fair comments. I personally prefer the ESV to the NIV, largely because the ESV often captures continuous past tenses (imperfect) on occasions when the NIV doesn't. I preached from the NIV for 7 years at our previous church, but since my wife & I moved to our current church, I've preached from the ESV & much prefer it.
My biggest problem with the new NIV (2011 revision) is poor English. Quite simply, in their question for gender neutrality, they've devolved into literally bad English, using "they" as a gender inclusive singular pronoun. I know that many people often do that in casual speech, and that's fine, but I don't want to see it in the Bible.

(John 3:18) The literal, and grammatically correct, rendering here would be "because HE has not believed in the name of the only Son of God," as we find in the NASB and any other formal-equivalence translation. We see the same thing with the use of "them" in John 14:23: "Jesus replied, 'Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.'" Again, "them" indicates a plurality of individuals, a group, a corporate body. The NASB renders the verse as, "If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him." One argument here, beyond bad grammar, is that by rendering "he" as a plural it makes fuzzy the individual, personal relationship each person has with God. However, while I think that, despite the English hiccups, the above verses are at least still clear in their meaning, there are some examples where the NIV translation team's quest for gender neutrality has lead to clear confusion in the text. For instance, let's look at 1 Cor. 14:13: "For this reason the one who speaks in a tongue should pray that they may interpret what they say." Who is the "they" in this case that should be interpreting? Is it the individual speaking in tongues? Or is it the church body? We must turn to a better translation to get some clarity here, with the NASB saying, "Therefore let one who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret." We now know that "they," literally rendered as "he," is referring back to the one who speaks in a tongue, not the church body. But there really is no way to determine this from the NIV's phrasing. To be clear, I don't hate the NIV. I own a copy and it's sitting literally feet away from me. But I do think the translators made a grave error in resorting to poor, incorrect English in order to force gender inclusivity on the text. If they really insist on going down this path, even though it's clunky wording, it would be better to translate "he" as "that person" or something along those lines instead of "they" and "them." For this reason, I could never recommend the NIV as a primary translation and think that it should be assigned a role as a comparison translation only. If someone wants a dynamic NIV-like translation that indulges a desire for some gender neutrality while also maintaining proper English standards, I'd recommend the CSB.
I think both goes hand in hand as both are used in its context and never loose to preach about christ as our saviour. Till than any Bible is good in its usage.
If you look at that bestselling translations list now the CSB has moved to third place just behind the ESV and NIV. There is also a trend of the CSB replacing the ESV in churches looking for an easier to understand translation.
When I was first saved, I had an NIV (pre-1984) and then an NIV Scofield study Bible. I replaced it in 2012 with an NIV84 and have used it ever since. The NIV84 can still be found on eBay but the price can be high. PS: Go Birds!
It is a beautiful translation. I grew up on it, and the KJV and NKJV. So, I got a good variety or spread on translations. I surrendered my life to Christ while reading the NIV. Now that there are so many other, newer translations out today, I have grown to love many others. Currently, my favorites are CSB, ESV, and NKJV. In that order. I did just order a NASB2020 as well as own a NASB95. Im still on the fence about getting a LSB bevause of all the name of God changes. Just seems odd to me.
First, great job as usual! You make a lot of good points. It's always hard to argue with success, and there's no denying the NIV has been phenomenally successful. I think there are various reasons for that, but one of them is that the NIV is one of the few translations that is widely accepted and used by nearly every Christian group (at least among Protestants). Evangelical churches and mainline churches alike use the NIV, and while other translations may be given preference in almost every congregation there will probably be a number of NIV readers. My own opinion of the NIV, though, is somewhat ambivalent. The 1984 edition is the earliest I am familiar with, and it was an outstanding translation that was both accurate and easy to read. The most current editions, however, have I think gone too far in some directions (gender inclusiveness, in particular) and have generally sacrificed some measure of accuracy in trying to appeal to a contemporary readership. Perhaps the most universal weakness of the NIV, at least compared to some other translations (particularly the KJV, NKJV, ESV, and NASB) is that its English, while modern and colloquial, is rarely of high literary quality. Still, I'm one of those guys who says the best Bible translation is the one you will actually read, so for those who really like the NIV, I say that's great. But it's not the best translation for me.
To be fair to the revisers, I'll note that the 2011 NIV improves the accuracy of the 1984 edition in a few significant places where the earlier NIV was really, really off. For instance, Jonah 3.3 originally said, "Now Nineveh was a very important city--a visit required three days." Of course, that's not what the Hebrew says. The ASV captures the sense of the text: "Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city, of three days’ journey." Modern archaeology indicates that the author of the Book of Jonah was engaging in a bit of hyperbole for dramatic effect (since Nineveh wasn't quite that big), but the 1970s NIV translators were clearly worried about reconciling the text's meaning with a rather tone-deaf view of Biblical inerrancy. The newest edition of the NIV improves the rendering of this verse: "Now Nineveh was a very large city; it took three days to go through it." A similar problem with the 1984 NIV appeared in the parable of the mustard seed. In Mark 4.31, it read, "It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest seed you plant in the ground." But that's not what Jesus said. His actual statement deliberately exaggerates how small a mustard seed is in order to create a vivid contrast with the resulting plant. Again, we have a case of rhetorical hyperbole being mistaken for an error and then being "corrected" by the NIV, this time by suggesting that Jesus was only speaking of seeds used by the farmers in the region. The 2011 edition preserves the accurate hyperbolic statement from the Greek text: "It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds on earth." It does the same thing in Matthew 13.32, where the 1984 edition's translation misleadingly stated, " Though it is the smallest of all your seeds," despite the lack of any second-person pronoun in that clause.
Its not hard to argue with success , thats like saying there are over a billion muslims , Mohammed must have been a prophet and not the snake Son of Satan that we all know he was. Popularity dosent make something right or true. My old mother was reading NIV and didnt even know verses had been removed , mostly supernatural verses or directly to do with Jesus .
I’m 49 years old (1972) and I was brought up with the NIV. Most church sermons were preached from KJV, some from NIV. All of the Sunday School and Children’s Church bibles & curriculum were NIV, as well as all Royal Rangers materials were NIV. I “heard” King James, but “read” NIV. My grandmother could recite entire bible stories in the car on the way to church in King James and never have the bible opened to read. She had a great memory.

I have the 1984 NIV Quest study Bible, & it’s the only one I ever want. I have it because my mother bought it for me. I cut my teeth on the KJV, & now have the NASB (1979, 1995), the NKJV, the ESV & the CSB. I’m Southern Baptist, but I don’t think that’s the reason I like the CSB more than the NIV. I was raised Nazarene, but after a nasty church split that my family didn’t want to be caught up in, we switched to the Assemblies of God. After I married & left home, I switched to Southern Baptist. I refer to myself as a Bapticostal.

If you or the person teaching you is using the New International Version (NIV) of the Bible, and continue to do so after reading this article, then you are truly blinded by Satan. The King James version Bible began in 1604 and was completed in 1611, but in the year 1978 the full version of the NIV BOOK was released. The “NIV” stands for “Non Inspired Version”! The people who put the NIV together were not led by the Holy Spirit like the prophets who wrote the scriptures of the KJV. Read 2nd Timothy 3:16 Look for yourself. They state that they wanted to publish a new Bible that wouldn't offend any particular religious group. So they got many people together to compromise the Word of God, and published a perverted Bible that satisfied many peoples opinion of the flesh. Their STATED MAIN PURPOSE was not to preserve what they called THE TRUTH; but rather, to publish a translation that was non-offensive to all religious denominations which is WIDELY MARKETABLE. God makes His children to be united by truth, rather than to be divided by error. (2nd Corinthians 6:14-17). The Word of God magnifies TRUTH; whereas, the DEVIL 👿 crowd magnifies LIES and FALSE RELIGIONS which are 100% HERESY. Something's Missing! So what's wrong with the NIV? In a word... EVERYTHING! Do you have any idea how many things were changed? Hundreds of words, phrases, verses and even the entire Bible. Then exchange them with BRAND NEW King James Bibles'' There are also 15 verses that has been REMOVED from the NIV which you do find in the King James Version bible, and that is: Matthew 17:21 - 18:11 - 23:14 Mark 7:16 - 9:44 - 9:46 - 11:26 - 15:28 Luke 17:36 - 23:17 John 5:4 Acts 8:37 - 15:34 - 24:7 - 28:29 The NIV translators removed 64,576 words as compared to the KJV! Words are very important! God put “every Word” there for a reason, so we could live by them! Matthew 4:4, “It is written, Man shall not live by bread ALONE, >>>BUT FROM EVERY WORD THAT PROCEDETH OUT OF THE MOUTH OF GOD.
The NIV was the first bible I read in its entirety. I was the translation that help me grow as a new Christian. It was there that I read Romans 1:18 about the wrath go God. It was there also were I read that "Christ made a public spectacle triumphing over them by the cross" in other translation it does not have the same impact.With that said I also missed other things from other translations that would have giving me a proper meaning of the text. The NIV served its purpose in allowing to understand the Bible by being able to read it without stuttering (KJV anyone) but after a while I was able to appreciate the KJV and there thing in KJV that are lacking on the NIV. To me the NIV is the milk you will to get strong, but KJV is the meat jeje. I eventually ended up reading NASB and love it that lead me to ESV and cannot stop reading it and compering it also. the whole trajectory has lead to CSB because I want some of the NIV with some of the ESV, KJV, and NASB and would say I am getting to love this translation. I dis-agree with Frisch when he says that the NIV is the sweet spot, no me friend it is the CSB that is the sweet spot. I was considering getting another NIV, but with the purchase of the CSB I wound need to...The NIV tries to relate to current culture like gender equality and all that nonsense and there is were they have lost me. A translation should be more concern in being close to the original intent of the original authors. Trying to change pronouns to accommodate modern society is just not it. The NIV is once again the milk its needed to begin your journey, but I have move on to other translation. You can't stay reading only the NIV all your life.
The Bible translation I started out with was the KJV and then I discovered the NIV in 1984 and been with the NIV ever since. But now I'm taking a look at the CSB. After I investigate or explore the CSB. I will then decide to either stay with the NIV or switch to the CSB. I’ll let you know what I have decided.
If the NIV was still using the '84 text it might be my primary translation today. The 2011 revision has too many issues for it to be a primary version though.
@@sorenpx You could always get your hands on an older Bible for your own personal study. It's not like the people behind the NIV will break into your house and confiscate your 1984 edition.
@@BBC600 Yeah, I've thought about that. For whatever reason though I feel compelled to use an "active" translation, even for personal study. This may surprise you, but I have actually gone back to the KJV as my primary translation. I use the KJV mostly in my own study, while also making some use of the NKJV, MEV, NASB '95, CSB, NLT and NIV 2011. The NIV '84 was such a great translation for interacting publicly with both believers and non-believers, because it was clear and easy to understand while also sounding elegant in its language. It really is a shame that Zondervan killed it.
Which Bible is best: which every one God speaks to you through and your read. I personally own 8 bibles in 7 translations. The 1977 NASB, 2011 and 1984NIV, HCSB, ESV, NLT, KJV and CBS. I do have an 1853 KJV but I don’t consider that part of my Bible collection as it’s a replica of Lincoln’s inaugural Bible.
Holman had me at the HCSB. Then they had to go and change it to the CSB and remove the unique features I liked. In my opinion, the NIV makes the CSB unnecessary. The SBC needed their own version to use in their Sunday School materials, etc. They had that in the HCSB. Add to that I am now in a church that uses mostly the NIV and ESV.
I love the KJV maybe because im Scottish i can understand it better than a China man or French person , your also in no doubt as to who the speaker is addressing with the thee's, and thou's .
I'd say they're about the same for how readable they are. The CSB can be a tiny bit more literal at times, but not literal as the ESV. But it uses more modern English than the NIV because it uses words like there's and don't more often.
@@abrahammatthew2066 you don't understand that the NIV used the Critical Text and not the Byzantine. Read the NIV preface. They are consistent in their translation philosophy.

Hello, really cool glasses. I like your I guess it's called a blog/channel maybe not really sure but any ways it's nice to watch and listen to. I have a paper back hcsb and it's ok. I have been considering buying a csb with the Surgeon sermons in it but the jury is still out on this version for me. I have been using many Bible's throughout the years and even have a copy of the passion translation. I started off with the KJV but I read other translations and I also research the original languages also. I'm a lifetime student of the Bible and I try to find clarity. The Bible says wisdom is the principal thing but in all your getting get understanding and I have not found one version that does it for me. I have read a lot of commitaries too and I wish someone would come out with a one volume that does it all but I really don't see that happening. Lol......... my thoughts? two things.. I do not see much difference in the translations of the HSCB and the NIV.. to make that much of a difference as to which one should choose... for example John 3:16 HSCB _"everyone" NIV..."whosoever" does this make enough of a difference to cause one to switch...? the better question is .......why use and HSCB or an NIV at all when John 3:16 in both read "One and only Son" instead of the KJV version "Only Begotten Son"....I would think THAT change would raise more eyebrows.. than the change between "whosoever" and "everyone".. as far as the KJV not being accepted... ?.. you did not mention that the peoples of the King James days.. were a LOT MORE discerning than they are now.... back then if you shooed a horse incorrectly it would go lame... nowadays... people do not think anything of.. using the donut on their vehicles an indefinite amount of time when they have a flat tire... PEOPLE JUST DON'T CARE AS MUCH ABOUT SIMPLE THINGS LIKE THEY DID BACK THEN..

What about the missing verses ? That really freaks me out, and there is no consensus on what is genuine or not in these verses. I grew up and had a book about the angel stirring the waters once yearly at the pool of Bethesda, now im being told its iffy , cant have it my friend.
The difference is that most of the modern versions use a different manuscript tradition. Many of the "removed verses" were either not present in the older manuscripts or were marginal notes that were read as being part of the body text; however, most good bibles will have those verses in the margins at the bottom of your bible anyway. If you look into how Erasmus had to compile his version of Revelation (the basis for the KJV) you'll see that not even the King James is perfect.
One day you say LSB is good, the other day you publish 2 videos telling it is bad. Now you say NIV is better than CSB, in other videos you say your most favorite translations are CSB and NKJV. Are you lost or you dont have constant subscribers to catch these inconsistancies? You seem to publish thousands of contradictory videos for those who search youtube for something to see a video of you that they like to see, and watch an ad and click the like button! Jesus!!!
Different Greek manuscripts being used for the translations. There are some who theorise that the "additional" words in the manuscripts used by the KJV translators were supposedly notes added on by scribes who were copying those early Greek texts. Whether that's true or not - there's not enough court standard evidence to prove or disprove this.
I hope people understand that every time a KJV defender speaks about "changes," what he is really talking about are places in the text where the translators did not translate something in the same way that the KJV translators did back in 1611. That difference does not constitute a "change" in the Bible text, but rather denotes a place in which different translators, with access to different resources, make different decisions about the best way to render what we believe was in the original Greek or Hebrew texts. All those books out there (especially Chick Publications) that repeat this misunderstanding by claiming things are "missing" or "changed" can really confuse the issue. The KJV is great but it is not the "original" Bible. The Latin Vulgate, for example, was produced more than 1,000 years before the KJV but you don't hear KJV proponents defending that translation. The only "original" Bible is what's contained in the original Greek and Hebrew writings and today we have only thousands of bits and pieces of those. Peace.
