Nixon in China: Flesh Rebels excerpt (Met Opera) 

The only opera I've ever enjoyed.

I love how the thrilling repetition of "BLOOD, BLOOD, BLOOD, BLOOD, BLOOD!" gives you a hint of where Madame Mao is going to take the ballet soon (even though the Nixons have no idea as of yet).

I cant believe so good opera has been created by these US people. too nice to be true!!!!!!!!!!!

@Argentynegal It's also to emphasize the extreme irony that the villain in the ballet performed that night for the Nixons embodies capitalism, imperialism, and aggression... in other words, everything that critics could claim Kissinger's foreign policy was championing.

The three interpreters had a really hard part and their voices together sometimes rubbed me the wrong way, but they were pretty good. What I did not understand fully was why the Henry Kissinger character was part of this ballet.

I also liked that the four Red Guard dancers are somewhat awkward adolescents, just like the Mao's Red Guard consisted mainly of young adults, handed the power to tear the older generation a new one.

The Red Detachment of Women outsold

Chorus is too large, indistinctive in pitch and not incisive enough. Colorado Opera performance is much better.
