NJ Devils Shutout The NY Islanders 4-0! Is there Still A Chance For Playoffs?

The NJ Devils had a past 48 hours in back to back games that one was a pathetic effort in a 5-2 loss to the Ottawa Senators and last night a thrilling 4-0 Shutout of the NY Islanders. With the win they sit 5 points out of a playoff spot with a decent schedule remaining.
Timo Meier with another huge game for the Devils opened up the scoring and had a goal, assist, and a fight sticking up for captain Nico Hischier. Jack Hughes was brilliant notching a goal and an assist in his 300 nhl game played.
Alexander Holtz played in his 100th nhl game and scored the 3rd goal of the game. With this win especially against the Islanders it was a 4 point swing and still have a chance to make a playoff push, question is with their inconsistent play can making the playoffs this year happen?

Not for nothing but this season is driving me nuts 😮 the continued inconsistent play is inexcusable 😡 so many losses to garbage teams yet great wins at Dallas & NYI 🎉 LFGD Always and Forever 💥

This team has been SO FRUSTRATING. If we won against Arizona, Anaheim, Ottawa THIS month- we'd be sitting in a playoff spot right now. How did the team not get up for those games- each of those 3 games were winnable and the Devils just came out flat with no effort. They keep beating teams like Dallas, Winnipeg and I get my hopes up and then they lose stupid games to Ottawa this weekend with no effort. We're still going to need some luck and for Washington to lose a little bit, if we want to sneak our way into the play offs. Devils have not made this easy for themselves :/

Adam, well said, I agree, if we wouldve won those games we would be in a playoff spot. Sucks, bc we get happy when they beat the good teams and then they lose to non-playoff teams and its infuriating. Fitzgerald better add the RIGHT pieces or his job is going to be on the line

I know its been pretty much a coin flip of what effort the team is gonna give since the coaching change + Trade Deadline but I really wish Fitz didn't sit on his hands for so long because I truly think if he made these moves 10-15 games earlier than he did, we'd be in a playoff spot.

Me too Bobby if these moves where made even prior to that Cali trip we would be in a playoff spot, it sucks but he better not play around this offseason.

Going to be a long offseason hope most of the remaining games are played well and enjoyable to watch like last nights game. Pretty much gave up hope on the play offs after the California trip. Devils will be back strong next season. Lets Go Devils!

I Agree Dean, that trip sealed it for us but it'll be a tough mountain to climb for us to get in. Fitzgerald better be busy this offseason

@@THEHOCKEYSKATEDOWN Hamilton being back and adding another experienced dman along with signing a decent goalie and the team will be fine in my opinion. When the goalies cannot be relied upon the entire teams loses confidence.

Schedule is brutal: 2 more back to backs and 3 games against Toronto (2 on the road)

Season is done, they have to go 9-1 and hope FOUR teams they're around play sub ~.550 hockey. That's a TON of help required. Gary's loser pt makes it seem closer than it is. I don't mean to be negative, just being real. Anyone that still has hope, good on you. It's going to take a miracle.

It is going to take alot, I highly doubt they make it, but the east has been soo inconsistent this year, well see, hopefully at least these final games are entertaining. If we don't make it Fitzgerald better be busy with adding the RIGHT pieces this summer.

They can barely win two games in a row and they'd only be able to afford to lose once in this last stretch of games. It's not happening. That said, and I've made this point before, at least they know exactly what areas need to be addressed and Fitzgerald plans to go "big game hunting" to fill those holes (shutdown defenseman has to be a top priority along with a top tier goalie and probably get a new coaching staff). Right now, the Devils just need to focus on playing their best hockey and at least go into the offseason feeling like they're capable of moving forward and attaining success and not go out feeling completely frustrated and deflated. You want them hungry to get back in the saddle asap.

I agree, its near impossible, but all those teams around us have been so up and down as well. Hopefully they make it entertaining down the stretch and Fitzgerald makes the Right moves in the offseason. No lets see if this works with plug in players, no, they have the assets use it to help this team advance.

We’re not making the playoffs at this point we should be calling up AHL players to get them ready for next year , and rest our injured guys.

It's unlikely that the Devils make the playoffs this year. They are 5 points behind Washington (who are in the 2nd wild card spot) and they have 2 games in hand on the Devils. They are 7 points behind Philadelphia (who are in 3rd place in the Metropolitan division) and they played the same amount of games as the Devils. The shutout over the NY Islanders is the Devils first shutout of the season. The Devils is the last team in the league to get a shutout this season.

Ive been to 6 games. Home opener, win versus Detroit Loss versus Washington Loss versus San Jose Loss versus Anaheim Loss versus Dallas Loss versus Ottawa I think it might be my fault. They were all incredibly frustrating losses

Its not your fault, I know I've felt that way going to games too bc they barely won when I went, but its the team just one of those bad years, and if Fitzgerald wouldve made these moves earlier we would be in a playoff spot

I know that Ottawa loss was the one that did it for me and many in the weeks prior, but the way the teams in the east have been still has that door open. I highly doubt they make it especially with how they've been all year, but well see

I dont think Green is back next season as head coach, moves made this offseason should be moves to take us to advance to the playoffs, if not Fitzgerald will be held accountable
